Just rewatched a professional opera singer perform this, whilst the quality of the singing is without doubt much better, Beth’s version with her fractured voice gives so much more feeling and emotion to this piece.

    ~LYRICS~
    Where has he gone
    My dearest son?
    Perhaps during the uprising
    The cruel enemy killed him
    Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
    My son?
    Never again
    Will I have his support
    Even if I cry
    My old eyes out
    Were my bitter tears
    to create another River Oder
They would not restore to life
    My son
    He lies in his grave
    and I know not where
    Though I keep asking people
    Everywhere
    Perhaps the poor child
    Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
    lying in his warm bed
    Oh, sing for him
    God's little song-birds
    Since his mother
    Cannot find him
    And you, God's little flowers
    May you blossom all around
    So that my son
    May sleep happily
    ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

May I just add that lyrics are sung not in contemporary Polish, but in the Silesian dialect of past centuries. For many Poles it's challenging to understand it totally, but Beth delivered brilliantly. Extraordinary performance.

This is Highlanders dialect exactly and the music has harmonic of Polish Tatry Mountains culture. Still a good shot this is not official Polish.
Highlanders dialect has a specific role in our culture and is used to express the most unleased emotions. This is my opinion, not a rule. My observation.

that's a lovely way of putting it. i was undecided if i enjoyed this as much as the Upshaw recording as Beth's high notes are a little off, but you're right in the context of the piece: broken works as the rest of Beth's delivery is beautifully on-point.

Although I had listened to this piece before and several other versions of the second and third movements, it never had such poignant meaning to me as this version by Beth Gibbons coupled with its English translation of the "sorrowful song."
I had been searching for a musical work to accompany a piece that I had just recently written on the eighth anniversary of my son's death. He was an 18-year-old innocently riding his bike in our neighborhood when he was instantly killed by a drunk driver.
A close friend had insightfully asked me if there was an appropriate musical piece to parallel the feelings which I had expressed in writing.
This version is a perfect accompaniment.

@@RickSanchez-dn6rd We can all sing well with practice, it's just that her voice is small and thin, and as a limited range of highs and lows that she can (physically) hit. It's just like with the Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan will NEVER have a power-voice, just as Dolly Parton will NEVER have small tits. But that dont' mean that can't still create works of genius.

Dawn Upshaw is how a wonderful, trained interpreter embodies in an exceptional way the music of a composer, she is the point of reference for every "classical" version of the Symphony, Beth Gibbons is how a woman 'naturally' brings it to life, meaning actually living it before our ears, as its pain and sorrowful lament was something just happening right now, in real life. Yes she has a thin voice, not very dynamic, needs a microphone, etc. but to all those pointing out this doesn't it occur to you what this ensemble of artists is trying to do here? Giving LIFE to the piece in a new way, giving it a new VOICE, showing how much of it is conceived as a pure vehicle of feeling instead of a work of complexity and skill. And yet, how skilled are the artists involved! The Orchestra has recorded the Symphony many times...Penderecki, well, is Penderecki!... And there are not many pop/rock/whatever singers out there capable of pulling such a thing off and in such an honest, crystalline way, and if you listen to her album with Rustin Man you can tell how Beth Gibbons is a Master of modern era soulful singing. This is going to be a classic too, in my opinion, and this was in no way a commercial operation, rather a brave artistic statement.

    • @jilden999
      @jilden999 5 лет назад

Just discovered this version after having been in love with Dawn Upshaw's version for nearly 30 years. Her slightly broken voice adds a different kind of anguish. Whether she is classically trained matters not. Her voice is beautiful and gives out such emotion 💔

Interesting comment, without dought this is an extremely moving piece of music whether you know the text or not. Just as yourself I got to now it from the Upshaw recording but always felt something was missing, then some time later I discovered the early recording of Stefania Woytowicz, then I understood, Upshaw lacks the raw emotion, it is also worth listening to Rebecca Evans performing it, the emotion is in her as well.
