This performance is truly stellar! Viktorija Miškūnaité knocks it out of the park! Beautiful tonal balance - exquisite control, and breathtaking depth. As for the Youth Orchestra of South Tirol - what an amazing bunch of highly focused youngsters - I am deeply impressed - their execution and technicality is truly world class. Stefano Ferrario is able to extract every last drop of musical goodness from these fine young players.

With eloquent regret, the pain of the three moments reflected in this symphony show the fragility of the human being. Without any doubt, a complete example of sensitivity, helplessness and dedication in the face of the tragic ends of humanity.

    First Movement:
"My son, my chosen and beloved
Share your wounds with your mother
    And because, dear son,
I have always carried you in my heart,
    And always served you faithfully
Speak to your mother, to make her happy,
Although you are already leaving me, my cherished hope".
(Lamentation from the collection of medieval passion poems from Benedictine Monastery of St. Cross on Łysa Góra, Poland. Second half of the 15th century. Author unknown).
    Second Movement:
    "No, mother, do not weep.
    Most chaste Queen of Heaven
    Support me always.
    Hail Mary, full of grace".
(Prayer inscribed on the wall of cell no. 3 in the basement of "Palace" - the Gestapo's headquarters in Zakopane, Poland; Beneath was the signature: Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna, 18 years old, imprisoned since 26 September 1944").
[Helena Błażusiak survived torture without betraying her comrades and then she managed to escape from deportation train to nazi concentration camp. She died in 1999].
    Third Movement:
    "Where has he gone
    My dearest son?
    Perhaps during the uprising
    The cruel enemy killed him
    Ah, you bad people
In the name of God, the most Holy,
Tell me, why did you kill
    My son?
    Never again
    Will I have his support
    Even if I cry
    My old eyes out
    Were my bitter tears
    to create another River Oder
They would not restore to life
    My son
    He lies in his grave
    and I know not where
    Though I keep asking people
    Everywhere
    Perhaps the poor child
    Lies in a rough ditch
and instead he could have been
    lying in his warm bed
    Oh, sing for him
    God's little song-birds
    Since his mother
    Cannot find him
    And you, God's little flowers
    May you blossom all around
    So that my son
    May sleep happily".
(The folk song from the period of the Silesian Uprisings of 1919-1921).

Absolute perfection, so delicate at times that one imagines it’ll fall apart. The first third is ever so slightly out of kilter but once the Diva begins the orchestra comes under her spell and goes from strength to strength. Note how the conductor has chosen to dedicate a solo violinist to accompany the Soprano. Bravi.

I'm a bass player and I loved it. This came up accidentally on my feed and I'm glad it did. Friends, remember this is a Youth Symphony, and the Conductor should be judged on how he brings out the youth, not on how you think he's "showy", he's attacked an very difficult piece. Yes, the bass players at the start were playing different parts, some of you kiddies missed that, with your comments about them having different bowing styles. Listen again with your eyes closed and you won't see some play French Bow and others play German.

I've listened to many performances of this beautiful work, but keep coming back to this rendition. I believe it's because it "breathes" more... Something about how the orchestra ebbs and flows beautifully throughout. Intensifying and diminishing at all the right times (for my ear at least). 42:00 onward being a beautiful example. I also love how the conductor treats the 21 A-Major chords at its close... Some almost imperceivable, while he stresses others... the first A chord, then the sixth, eleventh, sixteenth and the last two.. the twentieth and twenty-first... Stunning. 😘

This text: "O Mother, do not cry, no - Heavenly Chaste Queen, you always support me", ends with the prayer call "Hail Mary".

I think my new favorite version. Not only the sensitive playing but the on-pitch singing.

I attended her Seattle WA performance some three decades past. It was and is a memory never forgotten.

I'm sure this version is the one played on Radio 3 this afternoon. was driving along in floods of tears it touched my soul. I was 5 years old when they showed film and photographs on TV of the concentration camps and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It brought it all back to me.

Amazing! Young instrumentalists from Italy trained on examples from another universe and a delightful singer from Lithuania gave such a wonderful performance of niche Polish music. The Pole's complete admiration and thanks.

    Część I:
    "Synku miły i wybrany
    Rozdziel z Matką swoje rany;
    A wszakom Cię, Synku miły
    W swem sercu nosiła
    A takież Tobie wiernie służyła,
    Przemów k Matce
    Bych się ucieszyła,
    Bo już jidziesz ode mnie
    Moja Nadziejo miła".
(fragment "Lamentu świętokrzyskiego" z opactwa benedyktyńskiego na Świętym Krzyżu. Lata 70-te XV w. Autor nieznany).
    Część II:
    "Mamo, nie płacz, nie...
    Niebios Przeczysta Królowo,
    Ty zawsze wspieraj mnie.
    Pewnie go w powstaniu
    złe wrogi zabiły.
    Wy niedobrzy ludzie,
    dla Boga świętego
    cemuście zabili
    synocka mojego?
    Żodnej ja podpory
    juz nie byde miała,
    choćbych moje stare
    ocy wypłakała.
    Choćby z mych łez gorzkich
    drugo Odra była,
    jesce by synocka
    mi nie łozywiła.
    Lezy on tam w grobie,
    a jo nie wiem kandy
    choć sie opytuje
    między ludźmi wsandy.
    Moze nieborocek
    lezy kay w dołecku,
    a mogłby se lygać
    na swoim przypiecku.
    Ej, ćwierkajcie mu tam,
    wy ptosecki boze,
    kiedy mamulicka
    znaleźć go nie moze.
    A ty, boze kwiecie,
    kwitnijze w około,
    niech sie synockowi
    choć lezy wesoło".
(ludowa pieśń z czasów Powstań Śląskich 1919-1921).
