A wonderfully "revealing" reading. The up tempo takes off the drab blanket so many traditionalists lay over this piece. I've listened to it hundreds of times and never thought until this hearing, "What an odd, but beautiful statement this piece is."

“Ach du lieber, mein schatz”!!!!! In ALL my 82 years of life here on earth, this is probably one of the greatest performances of one of the greatest symphonies I’ve ever heard, bar none! WOW! PASSION at its utmost!! The soloists were fantastically fine & precise!! It’s a wonderful thing to see the musicians “animated”, full of the passion of the music!!! The cameraman did a pretty fine job of highlighting the soloists as they played. Fine young conductor too! Wish though the cameraman would have “highlighted” the tuba player more! What wonderful “body” he added to the tremendous music! GREAT GREAT GREAT performance of a FANTASTIC SYMPHONY! “Viva la Jean Sibelius & Finland”!!!

I haven’t heard this piece of music before but it’s a pleasure to listen to, being unaware of what will happen, as the orchestra progresses through till the end.
The orchestra are such talented musicians and work their magic through this piece, unknown to me, unfortunately.

As many times as I've heard this beloved symphony by many ensembles, I can safely say I've never heard it like this. Which is in no way a complaint. Peltokoski gives it fascinating new wrinkles in tempi and dynamics. Kept me intrigued and engaged throughout. And intensely moved. Proof you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. It would be wonderful to hear his take on the other symphonies. And of course FRS's playing is inspired throughout.

Never has the finale been more. fantasy like than in this rendition. Quasi una fantasia, indeed! The bold Karelian fury changed, with huge dynamic step, to the. breathtaking romantic hymns, that were more dreamy than ever. Especially the last upcoming of the. romantic melody was at the same time so airy and. passionate, that I moved to. some. interspace, in which there is no time but eternal duration and light. Love and warmth, that carries you away.
I appreciated, how the somewhat tragic coda climax of the finale was. given, in some manner, the nature of a calm epilogue. No need to make overt gestures there. This resolution gave all the power to the. passionate melody before it.
There was, in the last upcoming of the passionate melody, also a convincing reference to the introduction of the symphony. I mean the manner, in which the melancholically dreamy clarinet theme comes back.
Like Notaire 2 said in their comment, details of this performance were. thoroughly. investigated. They had functional characteristics. I found myself thinking the national.romantic decoration of the majestic. Jugend buildings.
Alongside the finale, especially the scherzo was boldly reshaped and sounded fresh. No capses there either, perfect balance.
It made a fine introduction to the finale. Although the tempo was fast, the more peaceful part has never sounded so meticulous. Listen, how skilfully the. batton, the theme. goes from one instrument to another.
Also the. last part of the very second part sounded fresh and youthful . Dynamics changed sharply, again. The atmosphere was relaxed, indeed - dreaming, that paved way to the fantasy of the finale.
    Thanks, again Frankfurt orchestra.

My first time seeing this young conductor. Impressive! While some might be put off
by some of his more extreme gestures, the orchestra appears to be totally at one
with him, responding to his every move. I don't see any annoyance on their faces
at his demonstrative movements so, if it's O.K. with them, it's O.K. with me. I look

Hmmm...what went wrong here? This performance didn't lack vigor or purpose, but it left me unmoved, and it certainly isn't Sibelius' fault. I think it was overplayed and over-interpreted mercilessly, the music pulled out of shape only for effect. Phrases were attacked like a "bull in a china shop", stripping the music of its heart and soul. Or am I completely mistaken, and only having a bad day?

I tend to agree. There are as usual some over enthusiastic comments here and there’s no denying there are moments of great drama and passion and beautiful playing but the fact is if you, or they, listen to Jukka Pekka Saraste with the Oslo Philharmonic it immediately becomes apparent what a genuinely great performance is all about despite the sound quality not being quite as good as we have here.

I must agree as well. The orchestra is magnificent and I think without fault here. But the performance lacks drama. There is great symphonic drama in the First movement and in the finale, but we don't fully experience it this time. I think the conductor is still quite young and will likely improve as he goes along.

    • @Gwailo54
      @Gwailo54 10 месяцев назад

I agree. For most of thé performance it was too fast as though he was desperate to get the last bus home and then at the end he realised there was still another hour to go and the tempo and pulse, slackened. Some passages were too fast, some unusually scrappy playing as it was on the edge of the speed fingers can move at and the ensemble was slightly out. That said, there is tendency among younger conductors to be different and play Sibelius too fast.
I will put my hands up and admit I am used to the Barbirolli-Halléset version on EMI, which I bought as a student and “replaced” with the CD set (I still have all my eclectic vinyl collection). Barbirolli is much slower but he allows the music to breathe and there is a clear pulse that comes through.
I admire this orchestra a lot, but they were not allowed to shine in this performance. I would like them to go outside their usual repertoire and do a complete live cycle of Vaughan Williams (9) and Andrzej Panufnik (10), plus the latter’s Arbor Cosmica. Both composers are shamefully underrepresented by live modern live performances, including on RUclips. Panufnik fled Poland, where he was a friend and colleague of Lutoslawski. His arrival in England found him not radical enough whereas in Poland he had been pushing at the boundaries, not always successfully. Things changed when his Sinfonis Sacra won a composition competition in Monaco.
