Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is a game sadly missed when it released initially, so when I found out if was going to be re released on PC and modern consoles I was extremely excited and happy at what Atlus decided to do. I was even happier when I got an early copy of the game to mess around with prior to the game's launch, but the reality is much more dire than that. The horrible state of Persona 4 arena ultimax can not be understated and, while this video took very long to make, I believe is one that needed to be made. I really don't want this game to be botched and forgotten like just another slap dash port onto steam. With persona 4 being my favorite game in the series, if not the entirety of shin megami tensei, and my being a big fan of fighting games and the fgc as a whole, this game was definitely one I was excited for. One of the very few games than cam out recently that I can genuinely say I was looking forward to, but it turn out to be a real mess. Persona 4 arena ultimax or, p4au for short, came out with half the love I thought it would get. there was no p4au rollback, there was no p4au crossplay, there wasn't even instant rematching in the lobbies. Riddled with glitches and bugs, technical hiccups, and a price point expected on a remastered game, persona 4 arena ultimax seemingly was made for no one. This video will serve as a p4au critique, p4au review, and a general summary for the state of p4au as a while.

I said this on another channel. It was very arrogant of Atlus to release the game without netcode. I'm not a competitive fighting game player by any means, but I want Atlus games to succeed. If they were going to release this without netcode and the netcode came in August there are a few things they could have done to ensure its success. I think EVO was at the same time, but it was also tournament season in Japanese pro wrestling. Why do I bring this up? The story is based in New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax tournament. So you could have had promotion in the fighting game tournament scene for the fighting game fans, and the Japanese pro wrestling scene to highlight the story mode. It didn't even have to be with New Japan, Pro Wrestling Noah has a similarly named N-1 Victory tournament at around the same time. There were many steps Atlus could have done to ensure its success if they insisted on the netcode launch so late. I'm really tired of these niche JRPG devs like Atlus and Falcom and the arrogance they have when it comes to releases.

@@sg79453 on Falcom itself is the refusal to share scripts with localizers until the full release. Then with the recent Trails from Zero release they insisted on their in house Kai version for some platforms but not others. I would also collapse Nisa into my criticism because some of their BS applies to both companies. They are releasing four Trails games in one year from all over the timeline and they are overcharging for the older games without much features like English VA to justify it. The price wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but considering the age of the games and the economy, they could have made it a little lower.
To be fair, Atlus takes the cake since they don't have the excuse of being as small as Falcom. I can also say Falcom pisses me off way less, and I can see a bigger willingness from them to improve or else we wouldn't be getting the Crossbell games at all.

I don't think fighting games live or die based on how good there online is. Fighting games live or die based on accessibly. Online is always important that's a fact but Blazblue added rollback, and many people tried it out for the first time, and many dropped off within a month or so because blazblue is NOT Strive. Strive was and still is successful because it's really easy to pick up, and pretty barebones. If Strive got released but played like Xrd, and still had strive visuals with rollback it would have been blazblue all over again. I remember Harada from Tekken said at an interview that TekkenTag2 was catered to the hardcore which was a mistake. Tekken was not mainstream yet in terms of people playing it but Tekken was always main stream in terms of it's name. Anyway Persona is not Strive, and if you don't know your shit auto combo will not save you from getting reckt, and Xrd is doomed with the same fate now that it has roll back. T7 is way easier than TT2 and T6, and remember T7 started out with 7.2frames of delay but they fixed it, and the game still stayed successful, but if T7 played more like TT2 in terms of movement, and priority, People would quit with or without out rollback. I agree that accesibility is important, but P4A is straight up one of the most accesible and mechanically simple fighting games to get into
Autocombos, 1 button DPs, and simple combo structure allow playerd to get into the meat pretty quickly compared to other titles like Xrd
T7 is still a lot less accessible than most fighters (game literally doesn't have a tutorial for no reason) and yet it's widely successful
Accessibility is important yes, but it's something that helps bring new players in. Depth makes them stay
And P4A was built with accessibility in mind

    • @deadlychase547
      @deadlychase547 Год назад +4

@@SuuBrainrot P4A is indeed accessible but my point isn't to say that it isn't. There needs to be a certain amount of accessibility, and I believe P4A doesn't cut it now in days. If accessibility was all that mattered many companies would have just stopped there, but instead games in this generation keep getting more accessible than the last, and they seem to be more worried about catering to an audience that doesn't play fighters instead of worrying about a game that's fun and has depth to give us things to do. P4A was the perfect mix of accessibly with lots of depth, and high execution barriers, Strive has very high damage, shorter combos, and stripped many of the characters down to the point where they all can be picked up and played if you take 20mins to fool around with them. The depth in strive is very shallow compared to Xrd, but strive is successful because there's less to do. You legit get to the meat and potato's as you say. I think people saying they like depth is interesting because I feel depth is just a go to word people use at this point but lots really don't want it and no one will openly admit to it.

    • @deadlychase547
      @deadlychase547 Год назад +3

@@SuuBrainrot Yea Tekken doesn't have a tutorial but it was stated by Harade that a lot of people don't do tutorials, and people are using the fact that Tekken doesn't as an excuse. If you look at Steam, and console complete tutorial rate it's pretty low. You really start to see how accessible Tekken 7 is when you go back and actually fight good players in T6 or TT2. If those games had a tutorial back then it wouldn't change the fact people would drop it because of how high the skill ceiling is and no one bothers to do them anyway.
(Quote) "Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada has said that mainstream fighting titles are resorting to the most basic tutorials because internal data reveals that many people aren’t really playing tutorial modes. Speaking to PCGamesN, he said that Tekken 7‘s story mode was meant to ease players into the game." No point in wasting resources on things nobody is using.
(Quote) "We can tell with most of our games which modes players are spending time in. We have that data in our company. You hear a lot of people say this game is great because it has a tutorial but when we look at the data, not many people play these tutorial modes. This is the same when you buy something new, you take it home and you don’t read the manual. It’s a positive for your product if you can say you have a tutorial but when you take a closer look you notice that people aren’t really playing it."
(Quote) "As you’re playing through the story mode, you naturally learn things like, ‘oh, this can be side stepped’ or ‘this character has this powerful special move if I learn how to use it properly.’ In the story mode, you can perform these with a simplified command so once you know about it, you can practice to perform this with the normal command.

@@MILDMONSTER1234 That's pretty much what I'm saying. I'm saying BB can't be as big as strive. Rather it has roll back or not, and the BB community has always been there with or without roll back. Lots of us are in the BB Discord setting up matches way before roll back. My other point is while Net play is very important it does not make a or break the game. P4 might not be doing great on steam but I highly doubt it is because it didn't start out with roll back. Strive would not be successful if it played more like GG and less like Street fighter mixed with some GG. Easy learning curve + rollback has a high chance of success imo, and I believe P4 is not easy (enough) for todays type of gamer. Though I think P4 is easy to pick up and understand but this is a 2012 game, accessible back then is different from accessible now.

So yeah I adore the single player mode of this series. As a added bonus Elizabeth goes on a journey to save Makoto, my favorite Persona protag, which is at least implied will be successful eventually if P3: Dancing in Moonlight's theme song is any indication and the expanded plot from P3P were made fully canon. I know thats a sore point for some people since they liked it better when Chidori was dead and think it goes against the themes of P3 but I don't agree with them, afterall Makoto's ultimate persona, the only appearance of Jesus in all of SMT, was chosen for a reason. I wish Atlus didn’t oversaturate their 2022 game releases. It created a clusterfuck because it made some games get lost in the shuffle in maintaining interest or few succeeding more than others. We got Ultimax (March 2022) (rerelease), 13 Sentinels (April 2022) (Switch), Soul Hackers 2 (August 2022), Persona 5 Royal (October 2022) (multi-platform release) in this year alone.
What made me not get Ultimax was for no rollback and no physical copy. I remember Atlus saying that rollback was coming later in the summer, but it was released in early August (basically a late summer in my opinion). They used it to remind people that game was available to buy with rollback as a selling point. Sure the steam charts saw a resurgence on the player count, but that wasn’t enough to maintain long term interest. Sometimes I can see the game get discounted and sold for $20 during a Playstation sale. Yet, I’m still not eager to buy it.
I wish Atlus could’ve stuck with releasing only Persona for this 2022 because of the Persona 25th anniversary appealing to the East and West. I say their impatience on making a quick buck really says a lot about Ultimax’s current status.

Most of the story happens at the very beginning and the end, the group infighting comes off as rather contrived and Erebus seemingly comes out of nowhere. As such, a good portion of the fanbase sees the lack of The Answer as not much of a loss.

But I can't blame you, because we all hoped P4A is going to be active, but launch ruined it.
Also if you play on PS4 because of bad PC there's still a solution: Guilty Gear Accent Core +R, which runs on a potato, has good netcode and pretty decent player-base.

    Wall of text ahead
My main gripes with this game, is how most of the p3 cast/elements is written like a stepping podium for p4 instead of being standing on the same level.
    We've got 2 new characters
1 is so comical that he'd definitely fit p4.
despite having a bit forcefully construed yet overall solid backstory, he's still somewhat bit of a 1 dimensional villain characteristically, which is a shame, then ends up being p4mc's rival for more p4 brownie points.
    Isn't adachi more than enough?
He's also initially can come off as a fanfic sue-ish character since he just comes out of nowhere with no foreshadowing then procceds to beat 4 very very experienced persona users, though you can piece out the details that he won by kagutsuchi body freeze hax, so it kinda erases his sue-ish impression earlier... Oh wait battles with nyx avatar and erebus exists... Scratch the things i just said to justify his sue-ish deeds.
2.... Oh atlus and their love of robots.
With the first half of the story (arena)
Her interactions with aigis are very great with whole similar experiences.
Up until those interactions however is just her cementing her future as p4's very own aigis (romance plot already included, congrats yosuke).
Now with the 2nd half (ultimax)
She gets to bond with p3 casts this time..... If i could even call it bonding that is.
She's just there, everyone else just rambles with fellow p3 casts, then she just offers a few sentences like polite replies or laughs.
Unless its a p4 cast, aigis or sometimes mitsuru talking to her, you won't know much about her.
Her epilogue is very dope tho.
I also don't like the final battle with adachi, yu VS sho, minazuki, kagutsuchi taking place on top of Tartarus (yes ik its a replica)
But Tartarus is such an intimate location to p3 and having this cheesy shounen as hell battle with 2 p4 casts and one p4 esque character having it out there, really undermines p3's high stakes serious finale feel of the location.
Now thats done, I'll move on with my other gripes.
Power levels both storywise and visualy in game wise.
Outside of mitsuru and akihiko, everyone else non p4 has low level version of skills or just an overall lack luster moves and visuals.
Like bruh why does a magic oriented character like yukari doesn't have magarudyne? Her IK is also one of the most least liked.
Then comes junpei with an amazing persona animation start up, only to fire a measly agi that barely out ranges your neutral attack.
Hermes a god known for speed has very slow persona animations.
His inherited signature move spring of life is suddenly replaced with victory cry (wth?)
It feels so wrong even if its mechanically stronger, replacing it is kind of ehhh...... Thematically wise.
(At least he's got one of the best IK in the game).
    Now for ken and koro
You'd think since their a duo that thinks could get messy and flashy.
    Hahaha no.
At least it feels satisfying when playing him tho.
    Also horrible IK.
Then there's the thing with p4MC and akihiko.
Akihiko a very experienced fighter coming back after his grueling training, gets beaten which is acceptable and believable due to mc wild card shenanigans.
Then comes yu vs yosuke where the latter can go toe to toe with the mc...
Bruh. It creates a weird implication writing wise.
The part adachi rescues aki and mitsuru is understandable since they got their energy absorbed by the crosses, as so its ok.
I love p4 as much as p3 but dang atlus pretty much got obsessed with p4 for a long while until p5 showed up, p3 never got the same treatment always getting backseat.
(Even in the pq series 🤣)
Well at least p3 is more fortunate than p1,p2 (atlus pls remake🙏).

The single player in this game is honestly pretty poor considering the series we’re talking about. That’s primarily because half the elements this game introduced weren’t resolved by the games ending and indeed still aren’t as of the later games in the timeline. This introduces some series questions regarding Persona 3 and 4’s complete inaction as of this point regarding the nationwide events of both Persona 5 games.

Being the updated 2.0 version not mentioned here with the added mechanics make it a nice refresher over the old game in 1.1 such as the new shadow frenzy, auto combo changes and, general combo routes changes due to button changes in general. Also worth a mention ps4 got a lobby avatar system where switch an pc did not so could so it's another con but, would also put it to the fact that is how the og 1.1 was on ps3 vs xbox. While the initial re-release of the game definitely left a lot to be desired, I personally still had a great time with the game even before and after the betas and patches. They didn't have a huge team working on the netcode for the game, which in my eyes more than makes up for the release schedule. As for the choice for delivery when it comes to releasing their patches betas, while definitely strange, I thought was fine. Perhaps my brain is just broken from my experiences with Rivals of Aether and their endless cycle of betas. I figured anyone who genuinely cared about playing the game would be more than happy to join the betas. They also released community updates whenever a new beta was available, so it was never hard to keep up with them. Overall, I'm just happy to be able to EX Air grab with the best of them on PC. Across all their PC releases, there are traces of a fundamental issue with Atlus: they really don't like PC gaming. If not for SEGA stepping in, Atlus would probably continue to ignore the platform altogether.
But when their games finally make it to PC, it's often with substantial drawbacks or irritating decisions. Like taking Persona 3 Portable instead of FES for the PC release, or having all the obnoxious Persona 5 Royal DLC unlocked right away. Or with Persona 4 Arena Ultimax right here, they initially weren't even convinced that rollback would be worth it.
To add to that, very few Atlus games even make it to PC at all, with everything from VanillaWare being banished to the backrooms of poorly-marketed console releases, even when their very design would be a perfect fit for PC.
In general, being an Atlus fan hasn't felt great these past few years. But on PC, it really is stressful. Atlus just doesn't care, and offers the bare minimum in effort, but their more recent games in general feel like examples of bad prioritizing.

Atlus is still one of my favorite game companies out there, but they've been doing a lot of things over the past several years that either: just doesn't live up to their standards, or I'm just not okay with. I'm sure most of us have complained multiple times already about their dlc practices so no need to get into that, but something else that kinda lets me down is that they haven't really published games like they use to. Atlus use to drop tons of niche RPG's that probably never would've made it over to the west otherwise and they just don't do that anymore. Persona is still fantastic at least. I still like the SMT games they've put out lately, though I don't find them nearly as satisfying as earlier games. But that's kinda it. Outside of a few Vanillaware ports (which Vanillaware games are AWESOME by the way) I can't remember what else Atlus has done within the past several years. Like seriously, what else has Atlus done outside of Persona and SMT within the last 7 to 8 years because I genuinely can't recall. Before the re-release, getting P4AU on modern hardware seemed very expensive at the time and seeing that it was stuck on the PS3 really made people like me thirsty for more Persona 4 after Golden on PC. The game was announced at the GOTY awards and I was hyped, more than I should've been because Atlus being this game any light was a miracle in of itself. The big problem I have is that when we got P4AU, there was nothing really new to keep me captivated to play. All of the dlc was given which was nice of Atlus but I needed something different, maybe adding in some new characters, new mode or maybe even bring in Persona 5 characters into the game as an extra story or just a new set of fighters. We already have Joker in Smash Ultimate, so it would be really unique having something new into this almost ten year old game. But the game dropped quickly after the long wait for rollback netcode and no crossplay.

This is my favorite fighting game ever. It's the last true 2D pixel art based game that ArcSys ever made. It deserves to be played and remembered forever just like 3rd Strike. I had my best experiences ever with the genre playing this game in person with friends. It is truly that good... hell there was a problem with a lot of the FCG irrationally dismissing it initially anyway, which never made any sense to me and seemed like the most superficial BS. It's really stupid and tragic that this is the state of the currently available version, I cannot comprehend why they wouldn't put in rollback... but my god dude, you could at least ATTEMPT to separate the stupid circumstances and "what your friends are doing right now" etc from your actual own appraisal of the game itself, jesus christ. Seriously, come on, that's just silly and stupid, and basically piling on a bad situation just to look like you "fit in" or whatever... the whole perspective of this is incredibly idiosyncratic, and really not about the game itself at all. Go watch a top 8 from years ago when this was "current"... it really isn't THAT long ago, jesus... or try playing it with a friend in person sometime, we're basically past covid it isn't like that's something impossible to do. I'm just saying don't form your entire view of this game based on the bad netcode.... were you literally too young to play it when it was new or something?

I just don’t really get why they would release the game, THEN patch in the netcode. It would’ve made A LOT more sense to wait that extra couple of months first.

This is really unfortunate, I’ve been playing the ps4 version that actually have the old ps3 lobbies and while it’s not the largest population of players compared to an active game like Guilty Gear Strive, I still find a good chunk of great matches.
It makes me sad that PC players have been getting it rough even with the current rollback patch (or in your case apparently still in beta, yikes) so here’s hoping that Atlus can get Arcsys to fix all this, since the rollback team who did Guilty Gear +R did a great job with adding more features to make it more accessible to modern players. Ultimax is my favorite fighting ever and I want everyone to enjoy it so here’s hoping we’ll get some updates after the persona concert, I’m praying for you pc players (and switch players too but that’s a whole other can of worms)🙏

      @nightwish1453 Год назад +2

And this might give the devs the wrong idea "oh they dont like this game we shouldnt do this anymore"

PC's online problems are different than PS4 but both had to wait until rollback dropped.
PC is also lacking PS4's more open lobby system (we just say "Junes").
This means it's much more difficult in PC to just walk up to one random person and play.

I feel like the exclusion of rollback in the start was cuz this could have maybe been a test release to see the interest in a return to the arena series? They wouldn't have added rollback to save money and to not make the community too "fixated" before releasing P5A. Given how stupid Atlus is with this stuff it could have been that. Sad thing is if it was a test they probably think people don't want P5 arena.
Didn't explain that well but y'know what I mean.

I dunno if people are still really playing it on PS4 anymore which is unfortunate. The numbers wouldn't have stayed large for long even if it had rollback but it definitely would've lasted longer if the game came with it at launch

Persona my be a bigger name than it has been in its history as a franchise, but I don't see how they thought that the online of this game would survive without rollback netcode. The fact that the PC version is STILL in beta with its rollback netcode means that once it's finally implemented the game will have so few players online left that it will hardly matter. The online of this game will have to practically be F2P for a revival to even be possible.
