External Hard disk and flash drive are common devices to transfer data from one computer to another.
One can also take a backup pf their data into the external hard disk. Keeping data without protecting the hard disk may lead to data theft or data loss. You should always protect external hard disk using a password.
How to Lock External Hard Disk With Password
1. There is a free tool inside every Windows computer which is BitLocker. You can enable BitLocker for your external hard disk.
Go to the control panel and open BitLocker and from there turn it on for your external hard disk.
Bitlocker would encrypt your data and password lock your external hard disk.
Keep the recovery key at a safe location in case if you ever lose your password it will help to recover the password.
2. Use third-party encryption tools on your Windows or Mac computers.
3. You can also use the software provided by Hard disk manufacturers like WD security for WD HDD or DiscWizard for Seagate HDD.
4. USB security is another tool to password protect your hard disk which does not encrypt your data.
It is quite fast compared to BitLocker.

There isn't a Bitlocker at Windows Home Edition

You know that usb security can't secure 100% your files. files are just hidden and can be accessed from winrar for example. I just tried it and I can access the files.
The third party application mentioned works only for a limited time, after which we have to purchase the official version.

Yes, using third party apps on mac. You can use M3 BitLocker Loader for Mac

BitLocker is not a good option. If you use the same drive in a PC where BitLocker is not there, I believe that the drive will be vulnerable and will be exposed.
Moreover, it doesn't encrypt the drive, rather it works on the files. That's why it takes huge time to encrypt depending upon the amount of data you have on your drive
The best is some kind of software used internally by the WD on its 2TB drives. Everywhere you connect it, first it runs a small programme and then asks for the password. If you give the password, then only it gives you access to the hard drive. Now it doesn't matter where do you connect the drive. The software required for running the encrypting/ decrypting process is on the drive itself. I need something similar for my other drives.

I have one doubt.
If iam encrtpiting the hard disk.almost 80% complete took more thane 5 hours and suddnly that time power cut also came.suddnley pc shoutdown how to continue with same 80% .
You have to redo again, a power failure or disconnecting the disk during encryption can lead to corrupt files.

Bitlocker isn't available for Home edition but you can use the third party tool.

I password protected my external hard disk with bitlocker but now when I am trying to open, it is asking for the recovery key and not for the password unfortunately I am not having my recovery key how can I I open my drive.
