I have played Sleeping Dogs. And I loved that game. Almost everything in that game was perfect and ahead of its time. Sadly, it didn't get the support it deserved.
Excellent comparison -- could have easily used GTA but the point would be lost since their development cost was probably much higher. But this example with Sleeping Dogs shows you don't need that much budget to make a dynamic open-world. Lots of these games miss a lot of those minor details that bring the world to life, a true sandbox -- and the others like the Saints Row Reboot are just movie sets and dressing.

Sometimes I feel bad when I see news about triple AAA games being constantly released knowing that my PC can, at most, run emulators up to GameCube and PC Games up to 2004. But when I see the state of modern gaming, and, in contrast, the greatness of old games, it's somehow a relief
I still hope you can get a better PC in the future nonetheless because there some true indie gems that will still require a semi-decent modern rig to play
So you just hate modern gaming because you're a brokie who can't afford a better PC? Gotcha. Old games are not better than new games and the same goes the other way around. It depends on the game, not the time when they were released. Anybody can make a video like this. Just pick the worst old games and compare them to a good new game and there you go. If you think modern gaming is bad it's not because it's bad but because you've become older and jaded.
@@theobell2002 Modern game is already at an big disadvantage in a fair comparison, because the average modern videogame charges you for 100 bucks to have all the content + plus maybe some microtransactions depending on how greedy the company feels at the moment. Old games overwhelmingly had more soul.
I never knew Sleeping Dogs could do all that cause I really be behaving like an undercover cop XD Finished that game a few times already, it was and still is amazing.
Played sleeping dogs at release, while waiting for gtav. Some of the details I didn't notice, others I took for granted. But they all added up to a good gaming experience. Gta like genre seems to be extremely hard to do right. Just look at cyberpunk at release.
Could have compared Saints Row Reboot to Older saints row games and the comparison would have been even more devastating. Same with GTA4 and GTA5 even.
Not only sleeping dogs is a hidden gem, it also very good for historical research. Many things in Hong Kong are changed. For example, streets are no longer filled with neon light signs but generic led lights.
I remember one time I was going to buy some games and didn't get Sleeping Dogs because I thought it was just some GTA clone. I got Dead Island instead Yes I still am disappointed at myself
Remember what Gaben said about realism in video games? That narcissistic feeling that world is ignoring me, when world doesn't react to your actions. That's how I feel playing modern games
Sleeping dogs dev genius, they act maximized their game engine capability by using 200% of their intelligence! Even a small amount of cost, you could still get an amazing outcome if you make full use of its abilities.
The biggest issue with videogame industries today is that people cut corners too much. A lot of money has been wasted on expensive products, props, animating, and creating the highest quality possible... Which sadly, it ended in disaster. Expensive videogames does not always guarantees a perfect gameplay. It's basically trying to make the best burger possible by shoving all ingredients at once, creating nothing but a one huge mess... With a RAW MEAT! That's why most indie devs do better jobs than industries. No hard feelings. But, if there is any hope, some small videogame industries can still do amazing job, even of the lowest budget ever. You don't need millions of dollars to make a game too realistic. Just make the game to be fun for everybody.
The biggest issue with Western videogame industry is that there is too much money in it. As a result modern games are made by businessmen for investors, not enthusiasts for players. When games will become so bad, that the players will stop buying them, this market will collapse and the industry will die. But at the same time this will be the start of its rebirth. The same thing for the same reasons happened to Russian videogame industry in 2008-2009, for example. It was mostly dead since then and only a year o two ago, after more than a decade of absence, it showed signs of life and began to develop once again (Atomic Heart, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Pioner, etc).
@@Langermar True. It's crazy how people back then actually made good games and today, they only focus on nothing. At this point, I cannot support videogame industries since they no longer care for the quality and feedbacks. IMO, Devolver Digital is the only decent publisher who loves every developer's game (Hotline Miami, Ruiner, Serious Sam, Cult of The Lamb etc) Even PalWorld does better than newer pokemon games (I could be wrong, but Nintendo is still evil to this day)
Holy shit, are open world games really that bad nowadays or is that some kind of mod? I usually play old games, Sleeping Dogs is still one of the most modern games I play because new games feel so souless to me, but damn I didnt know it was THAT BAD.
It's easy to forget nowadays that there are so many good games from the 2000s and 2010s that you might not have played yet. With the state of the industry right now, I feel like it's honestly better to pick up an old game than a new one. Better games with most of the bugs patched out AND for a lower price? Unbeatable.
I’ve played and cleared sleeping dogs multiple times, and i won’t ever get bored of returning to it again. The fight mechanics are so fun, story is amazing, vehicles are great, and many more. Still pales in comparison with GTA, but this is just as enjoyable, if not better for some.
Back when game developers had passion in their games ❤ For Example: gta - 97, gta 2 & gta london series - 99, gta 3 - 2001, vc - 2002, sa - 2004 can't believe it, just took 1-2yrs to develop these masterpieces
One of many reasons I bought a gaming pc but the main purpose are for playing older games in that haven't played or finished yet in 60 FPS because my old potato laptop only be able to run Sleeping Dogs in 15 FPS
If you dig around, it's common knowledge that most of the alloted budget for Saints Row 2022 was used to make up for the loss that came with the collosal flop that was Agents of Mayhem
I have grown apathetic towards modern, big budget, triple A games, not even gta6 excites me anymore(still haven’t watch the trailer). I don’t know what happened to me.
Suposedly graphics been more elaborate and teams bigger is the reason budgets for games are going up. But sometimes graphics arent even really that good. Sleeping dogs was such a great "triple B" game. A sequel would've need just some more budget to get better tech, for models, rendering quality and not much else since it had really good animations. I always say this, as a rule of thumb, if a game has a good ost and interface but doesnt look good. It more often than not is a good game becaus the devs took care. If its the opposite more often than not is just the engine carrying the graphics department and everything was half assed.
Hard disagree. This is the real take: Most games lack attention to detail and always have, most games are mediocre and always were, most ports are bad and always have been. Budget isn't really a factor - it's across the board, from indie to AAA. You're comparing a good older AAA game with a bad modern AAA game of the same genre. I could easily find a dozen AAA examples from around 2012 that are as bad or worse and plenty from the last 5 years as good or better. You're also comparing specific mechanics, like crowd interaction - where one game may lack in one area it might make up for in another. Even a great game might be lacking in a specific area a worse game does better.
I loved playing Sleeping Dogs. Such a great story and combat. The fact that we will never get another one really sucks. DLC was fun as well. Sleeping Dogs was made with love and effort. Volition Really messed up the Saints Row making it stupid and woke and also took out everything that made the Other Saints Row games awesome. Ubisoft 1st Watch Dogs was pretty cool but really dropped the ball on the Graphics bait and switch. After that, the games got worse. Watch Dogs 2 characters were boring and the one kid that was always depressed and looked suicidal made me depressed lol But no Suicidal. Developers are getting lazier by the day, it's not just games sadly
The passion for making a good video game seems to have faded away
Is the suits that meddle in and rush the process
I dont think its that easy. The devs are not necessarily the problem. Often they are more likely the victims. Greed is the real problem.
I don't believe that is the reason. There is probably tons of passionate developers but they are limited by the companies they work for and the budget. Publishers don't want to wait for you to code small details for weeks. They want you to do as much as possible in those weeks.
@@FTFEOfficial Good point, but I see many programmers these days who even when not working for a company don't care about efficiency or fixing bugs. The bar has been lowered too far for a lot of people

A common trend that I've heard is that more AAA companies either hire contractors or completely replace their team on a yearly basis, it would explain why the quality of products continues to go down, despite supposedly having a backlog of previous knowledge to draw on from past titles.
5:50 dude that is genius, even in GTA V the character just teleports out the car
Sleeping dogs really was an amazing game. Still remember playing experience. It was really smooth. Graphics were really really good and It didn't require a lot of resources too.
I remember how fun it was hijacking armoured trucks in Sleeping Dogs.
when i first got my hands on SD using my brother's x360, i was amazed at how similar it was to GTA but it stood out more because of the fighting and additional attention to detail like going to the bathroom to take a shower, wash your face and even take a piss (even more impressed of the fact that after pissing you can't piss again until sometime).
U were very passionate to details 😂😂

OMG Sleeping Dogs...what a game dude. I truly liked the aesthetic, the gameplay, the combat, the environmental finishers and many more. It had a great potential sad that we didn't got a sequel. But it is what it is and some games do not need a sequel.
The sad part is regardless of quality both game studios went under... Even the fact that sleeping dogs was a diamond in the rough.
Man, back in those days it was the best looking game for me. It was my favourite game for a very long time.
Sleeping Dogs is still one of the most amazing games I ever played. That fist fight combat and all made the game absolutely perfect and everything else with it. Shame there will be no sequel.
That was the time when AAA games were synonyms for attention to details.
Now AAA has become attention to bugs
Makes you wonder where all that money is actually going
To their asses
I have played Sleeping Dogs. And I loved that game. Almost everything in that game was perfect and ahead of its time. Sadly, it didn't get the support it deserved.
NikTek making now full long Videos is the biggest character development of any meme channel since Wendigoon!! :)
There isn't one gta you know? He could've compared it to sa, vc or maybe even 3.
Even more, they could compare it to SR3. Even it is better in some aspects
Sleeping Dogs is like GTA China Town modernized, it is seriously underrated.
Speaking of China Town, their is actually a GTA Chinatown Wars, it’s just like sleeping dogs

watch dogs 2: cool takedowns but markus can only punch/kick an npc with 0 difficulty
watch dogs 3: Dodge+hit, dodge+hit, dodge+hit. Wait for npc to drop ammo, go on.
If you haven't played Sleeping Dogs, you ABSOLUTELY need to experience that gem of a game. Easily one of the BEST open-world crime games ever made.
You know, we took good old games for granted, and thought games would only get better and better as technology evolves

The npc picking his phone back up from the ground really impressed me. Never noticed that detail before in sleeping dogs.

Sleeping Dogs is such an amazing and well polished game. Great graphics, physics, and such a great story too .
Saints Row games always was something like B+ games, but very fun. I can't believe it costs over 100M.
One of the best mechanics in sleeping dog for me, was him jumping from one car to another while driving. Truly a masterpiece.
And if you have Rico's suit, you even have more range to do it 😂😂. Game was GOTY

Sometimes I feel bad when I see news about triple AAA games being constantly released knowing that my PC can, at most, run emulators up to GameCube and PC Games up to 2004. But when I see the state of modern gaming, and, in contrast, the greatness of old games, it's somehow a relief
That happens when you only see about bad 'AAA' titles.
Finished that game a few times already, it was and still is amazing.
There really need to be more people demanding transparency when it comes to WHERE all this extra money is actually going.
A while ago I went back to XCOM 2, and I realized how much a masterpiece it is compared to modern AAA.
Played sleeping dogs at release, while waiting for gtav. Some of the details I didn't notice, others I took for granted. But they all added up to a good gaming experience. Gta like genre seems to be extremely hard to do right. Just look at cyberpunk at release.

Not only sleeping dogs is a hidden gem, it also very good for historical research. Many things in Hong Kong are changed. For example, streets are no longer filled with neon light signs but generic led lights.
Even Saints Row 2, released in 2008, fares better than these two "AAA" games.😂
1:35 bro they can't even find the damn exit, let alone grabbing their phone

Yes I still am disappointed at myself
I still get sad to this day because Sleeping Dogs never got the popularity it deserved.
man, aside from the gameplay, the sound design of sleeping dogs is amazing. better than most AAA games these days
I just feel like most modern games just don't have the heart they used to
it's just the developers are getting lazy, no passion whatsoever.
As far as I recall, I think Sleeping Dogs started as the third True Crime game. True Crime: Hong Kong, maybe? I’ve never played SD.
God Sleeping Dogs truly was amazing...I hate modern games so much its unreal
IMO, Devolver Digital is the only decent publisher who loves every developer's game (Hotline Miami, Ruiner, Serious Sam, Cult of The Lamb etc)
Even PalWorld does better than newer pokemon games (I could be wrong, but Nintendo is still evil to this day)
Holy shit, are open world games really that bad nowadays or is that some kind of mod? I usually play old games, Sleeping Dogs is still one of the most modern games I play because new games feel so souless to me, but damn I didnt know it was THAT BAD.
It's amazing how much work went into every little detail in sleeping dogs, it's even better than every gta. Think I need to replay that game asap.
A Man Who Never Eats Pork Buns, Is Never A Whole Man! 😂
5:00 Man, I remember in GTA Vice City, Tommy could jump kick a guy off a motorcycle and land on the seat in a single motion!

That's another rock to the pile, its not the only reason
