This week I picked up a vintage window and door from a local salvage yard, reframe them, and install them in my new garden shed.

It's good to know I'm not the only one who uses single edge razors as a clean-up tool. I use them all the time. Oh, and the shed is cool, too!
Sorry for laughing, but the look on your face when the sled kicks back when you turned the saw on, priceless. Glad you put this in, we’ve all been there. Thanks for the great build!!!
Hahaha! Yep that was an I’m an idiot moment for sure 😅 thanks!!
The sloped section you ripped off of the window is a stop/seal that meets an opposing sloped section when the window closes. It is common on double hung windows.
In addition to the builds and education you give, I really appreciate the shirts you wear promoting other builders - I love seeing camaraderie and support in this community!
Outswing doors is the way to go. That's how we do it in Scandinavia.
There are several safety benefits with outswing doors. First, if you need to evacuate the building, opening the door won't slow you down and you can still open the door even if there is a crowd pushing on your back when reaching the door. Second, if someone tries to kick the door in, it's not as easy as with an inswing door. Third, if it's raining sideways, the outswing door will keep more of the rain outside than the inswing door. Fourth, an outswing door don't need any spacing indoors, which will give you more space to stack things in your shed.
Nice build!
Thank you ... I was trying to decide...and you made me change my mind. Outswing it is!
That shed is nicer than most people's house!❤
I had this exact comment lined up.
Adding you to my list of people that pronounce Caulk like they don't want to get demonetized.
That’s an awesome door 🚪 and the way you hung it!
I would not have thought of building the door frame around the actual door, but then I'm used to wrangling a new door to fit an old frame in situ. Looks amazing.
As always, I learn so much when I watch your videos! I had no idea that doors had a bevel to help them close. I'm also incredibly jealous of your second-hand shop, we have a Habitat for Humanity restore but tend to get mainly newer construction items. That hexagonal window you passed by was so lovely!
When you closed the door after fitting the strike plate - what a reassuring 'clunk'. Brilliant work!
oohhh geez... I did this exact same project with installing salvaged doors for my shop. I reversed the swing, cut the bevel, pulled out the bolt, pounded in a dowel, built the frame, all that... Mine were double doors and I cut the doors down and made them Dutch doors to swing out to save shop space and for the benefit of natural ventilation in the summer. I really struggled with my sanity and happiness doing it all by myself and the relative ease and joy you express and the fine help you have almost makes me want to go back to Second Use and wander around stupid again and hurt myself some more...😥
I love Second Use! I got most of my workshop cabinets from there. They were salvaged from a school so they can endure a lot of abuse. Your window and door look great!
I noticed you struggled with the screws on your light build and slightly on this one with the hinges. A tip from someone who used to do this for a living, wax or soap on the screw threads will be a huge help!
Thank you for your time and effort with these videos 🙏💯💜
That’s the top sash of a cottage-style double hung window. The angle you cut off mates with the angle on the lower sash when both are closed. Likely there was felt or other weather stripping a long the length at some point.
That's good to know!! Thank you
Oooh, it would be cool to see a video of you just antique shopping and sitting fown, sketching and thinking up ideas and stuff. Just showing your creative process prior to the build😃
A very educational film. Your work on the window surprised me. The door frame work = more surprises. Glad I found your films
I am totally going to make that screw caddy. I've got some extra scrap plywood.
What a lot of work, but totally worth it in the end! For sure adds a ton of character vs a basic prefabricated new window and door
Thanks Kris 🙌 Definitely a bit of work. At one point I thought about making the door. that would’ve been a lot more 😂 glad I didn’t go that route
I LOVE Second Use. So many great pieces at really affordable prices.
Exterior door could be a challenge for one guy on a windy day. My next shed will have a new double door with adjustable mini blinds in-between the glasses I got on sale a few years ago before prices gone crazy. Working in progress on a little shed (5.5' x 10' x 10' high) with a new exterior single door but salvaged redwood. Great job good to see what other people are doing to get ideas and inspiration.
Second Use! Love that place. Great video, per usual.
I find it very interesting that you say that exterior doors should be inwards opening as here in Sweden we almost exclusively have outwards opening doors for our exterior doors, and the weather here can be very rough with rain, snow, storms, sleet, and everything in between. :)
I was just about to say the same thing! I can only think of outward swinging doors here in Sweden 🤔
The sloped section is used to make a tight seal when the windows is closed, it creates a wedge between both top and bottom windows.
Stunning! What a beautiful addition to your property with the old window, cedar, design everything just fits so well
Thank you!! 🙌
This is such a great shed project. Really like the idea of reusing the door and window.
Second Use! Love that place!
Awesome job, i love the look of natural wood and the white paint. Great video.
Thank you 🙌
You have really made an outstanding shed! It is a real complement to the house. Great job!
my friend. very nice. be happy. bravo. see you............
Thank you! Cheers!
@@MichaelAlm 👋👋see you.
Your trick with the skewers is super close to what I do at work when a cabinet door screw strips out! Ill use whatever is around, even cutting a long sliver off a shim with my pocketknife
Toothpicks work well too.
good
Reallllly appreciate the salvaged reuse!!! It would have been really easy to just buy new and save yourself some time and effort, but there's a lot of old product out there just needing to be saved and they look great! Thanks so much for sharing this option.
I'm surprised to hear that you think outswing is worse for rain. I'm pretty sure here on Florida that it's recommended to do outswing because when you have driving rain, it pushes the door against the seal making it resist water intrusion. When you have an inswing the wind can push the door away from the seal allowing water to get in.
In addition, an outswing is less likely to blow in during heavy winds because it has the door stop trim instead of just depending on the handset and lock to keep it closed.
Not that you're wrong, it's just contrary to what I've heard. I'll have research that later 🙂
Interesting 🤔 Maybe depending on where you live, one is better than the other...
@@MichaelAlm from what I just ready it appears that outswing are better for water intrusion, BUT if you live in an areas where it snows this tradeoff is acceptable because outswing doors can be blocked by snow, which makes complete sense why up north inswing would be preferred!
Learn something new everyday and having lived in Florida my whole life I've never had to consider the effect of snow on my doors...lol
Nice build. Love the T-shirt
I loved the video - mix of repairs, woodworking and building the shed. Keep them coming.
Thank you!
Great job, Michael. Another reason for inswing doors on houses is that it's way easier to find and install storm/screen doors. Take care.
Bill
Good point!
So much great info in this! I never realized doors have beveled edges. Makes sense
Thanks Johnny! Yeah... I forgot they were beveled on both sides 😂
Watching this for inspiration for my Live Home 3D fictional dream house project 😅 Love your channel so much! It's also a great audio backdrop to have on while working on the pc (but don't worry, I do also watch and actually pay attention haha). Thank you for making all of this available to us. Very inspiring and so well communicated and put together.
Fantastic video as always! I respect your work ethic hey!💁🏾♀️
The clarity of your work on RUclips sure gives me a wonderful impression of the plans you have up on your website. I will be getting one for a local carpenter to use to build the item for me, whichever i choose.
Great job!☺️
I'm building a shed and had a old door. This came right in time. Thank you! I am worried about making the threshold but we will see how it goes.
Speaking of doors, in Sweden most if not all house and apartment doors swings outwards. That makes them hard to kick in. 😊
Add Korea to that list. Funny their three hinge doors with the two top hinges close together, not evenly distributed like in the US.
Really beautiful work, Michael! The shed is looking fantastic! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you very much!
Looks great!
I appreciate your nicely paced informative video. I was drawn in even though I'm not planning a door or shed project.
Thank you!!
You should screw some 3 inch screws through that strike plate to help keep someone from busting the door open as easily. When it goes into the frame people can't just pull the little screws out without much fuss and steal tools.
That looks great and nice use of old reclaimed parts. Maybe someone already asked and you answered but couldn't you have just made it into a LH outswing door with the hinges on the right, instead of re-cutting the bevels to make it a RH outswing? I'm guessing maybe you didn't want to be stuck between the hedge and door when bringing things in and out though.
Finally it came out great. 👌🎉👍
Thanks! Part 3 should be out shortly as well 👍
FWIW, Craigslist in my area has old doors for free all the time!
Yeah, that's a good way to go too. I was hunting on there, but couldn't find the right size.
What a great video! I really wish my local restore had cool things. It’s a lot of tile and carpeting at the one that’s closest to me.
Thanks! Yeah, unfortunately salvage places run the gamut.
Dude, those Rockler pouches have been on backorder for three months...
18:50 In Finland here every exterior door is an out swing door by building and fire safety regulations.
OMG I WANT TO GO THAT "SECOND USE" HARDWARE PLACE, I'M GONNA BE LIKE A KID IN A CANDY STORE
Memanfaatkan pintu kayu bekas dan merestorasi
How to you manage to make all this look so easy...
Nice! ❤️🇸🇪
Thanks Josef 🙌
Great job! I didn't realize the door edges were beveled. Really looking forward to the next episode. Thanks for posting. I have to ask about the pry bar you used at 2:08...is it number 3 of 3 or is that the size or what??
Thanks! I bought it at a garage sale for $3 😂
Hurricane Doors open Outwards.
Great video, love seeing reclaimed materials being used; but please please ditch the awful musak!
Did you try the pvc primer with the adhesive?
Good job! I have though a question. The "actually shed" is kind of small, comparing it with the rest, which is just roof over.....nothing. I'm certainly missing something, but I don't know what 😁
The roof over nothing part is where they'll be keeping their wheelie bins, if I remember correctly from Part One 😊 I don't think this is their primary shed
Did you ever get around to creating the plans for this. Couldn’t find them on your site :/
What’s the black wood you have on top of your work benches?
Was the door itself perfectly square? Or did you square it while cutting? Did you buy the door to fit the opening you had or adjust the opening based on the door?
(This video was perfectly timed for me as I just bought a solid wood door for a closet in my 1888 home and now have to trim it to fit and hang...my concern being that I doubt the opening is square and I'm not sure how much of the frame I want to rip out.)
👏👏👏
With the hinges on the outside, it makes it easy to break in. Is there a way to prevent somebody from just popping the hinge pins out?
I meant to mention that they are locking hinges. They have a little divot in the the hinge plate that keeps the door in place even if you knock out the pin.
It's clear, that this is just a simple window, but besides that, European windows are so different & by far better than the ones in the US.
no way you made 3 parts out of shed video
Nice shed! Don't think there is enough room for a full woodworking shop...Will you wire it with electrical lights and outlets? Running water?
garden tools, he said
👍👍
Just gotta say, it needs some plywood trim.
18:55 tell that to the japanese, all their exterior doors are either sliding or swing out
And Shoji windows with rice paper.
I enjoyed the video. It’s becoming a beautiful shed. But I personally would have just bought a new plastic window. I bought one for my 3D printer cabinet as a door and it was only €50 including locking handles and so on. With that price its not even worth painting a old window. Time is money too.
Thanks! I just don’t like the look of vinyl windows. I also like the process of restoring old things and giving them new life. It’s less about the money and time more about the experience and the final look.
@@MichaelAlm Plus you're creating less plastic waste and you're using something that would be destined for the landfill instead. 🙌
And when it's your own home, the value of your time isn't always as important as when it's a paid job.
I build things for a living and I guess I see it differently because I always think that the time I spend building something for myself could rather be used to build something for my customers and generate some revenue.
That’s caulk with an L folks.
Do you also pronounce the "L" in salmon?
Yep 😂
The plumber’s PVC adhesive needs the primer to set up the glue. It provides the initial tack so that the joint has less slip. AZEK also makes an excellent adhesive for PVC moulding.
@@dianeewoldt3035 Why are you telling me this?
The L is silent in caulk. Don't be scared to say it like that. ;)
Only people from Boston say it like that. 😂
.
I am not from US but, 50$ for ruined window and 100$ for dor is too much. They are not from buckingham palace
Great build!
I have to say though, I will be glad when the era of weird, discordant background music is over. Every youtube video I see sounds like somebody has their finger on the record player. I keep having to mute.
This door and I have one thing in common. We're both hung.
