- This is the second time that I have fully disassembled my Winchester SXP pump action shotgun. The disassembly is fairly straight forward and requires no specialist tools. Apologies for some of the footage is out of focus.
In an attempt to lighten trigger pull I filed the hammer sear down so far the shotgun would not cock. Your video enabled me to install a new hammer. The shotgun now works. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this video. I disassembled my SXP for cleaning and totally botched things when I put it back together. Was banging my head against the wall for days and after watching this vid had it up and running within 30 minutes!
What happened when u botched it
Even with the camera’s autofocusing problems, this is the best disassembly & reassembly video I have found. I have had a Winchester 1300 since 1979 and this video allows me to see the differences between it and the SXP. (Very minor.) If I ever feel the need to take apart my 1300’s trigger group, this video will be very helpful.
Dude this is by far the best disassembly/reassembly video I’ve seen. Thank you so much for showing the trigger group assembly! You saved me from having to buy a new one for $100+. Could have been better focused at times but I was still able to get the job done. Keep more videos coming don’t let this page die!!
Excellent video, you just saved me a trip to the gunsmith or a $45 diagnostic.
Very useful, best strip down & assembly video I have seen, thank you 👍🏻
Great video and well explained. I have just uploaded a disassembly & reassembly video of the same SXP Pump-action but without the trigger group breakdown so have linked your video in my video description for those that need to take it apart. I hope that's all good? Keep the videos coming!
At first when I took my sxp apart I got stuck on the spring that you put in the safety. Let’s just say it took me the Whole day,and it comes out, I didn’t put the bolt lock in place right so the trigger couldn’t move or do anything .the next day I watched this video again and I fixed it turns out it was really easy I was just doing it wrong . This video was very helpful and I Recommend if you have Winchester SXP then look at this video for help.
Thank you this is the most comprehensive video on the subject and of great help
Ik this is 4 years later but this helped me a lot thank you
Only one issue - the bolt can be stripped out and cleaned properly - the hole in the top can be used to push out the large pin - out will shoot a washer which holds in the spring which powers the bolt action and holds in the claw. Reassembly is fiddly but can be done with patience. That said I agree it's better to leave it alone!
Thank you for your help
Ok the bolt lock latch system(disconnector spring)that releases the pump is blurry when you put the spring back in it....is the part I’m having trouble with and you said it was tricky and I’m sure it is but I need to know which way the spring faces up or down and I also can’t see in your video where you put it when you spin the bolt lock latch around so that it catches the part it needs to sit on
I'm having the same problem. Very detailed video other than this instruction.
Thank you so much for this video
Thanks, very detailed. I don't think I will try to take the trigger assembly apart.
Had anyone had success removing the forend cap/nut from an SXP? Mine will not budge.
I was just cleaning my sxp getting ready for some skeet shooting. And the firing pin and spring went flying. Found the firing pin but after looking for the past 2hrs still yet to find the spring.....
Thank you this is wonderful it came in handy ... thank you and yeah messing with the pin shit the damn pin out with spring but it was self explanatory to put back in even shot a 3inch slug through it to make sure everything worked fine
The breach bolt and breach bolt slide can be further easily disassembled, easier than the trigger module. The extractor spring needs to be compressed (or not) and the cam pin tapped out. I'm a strong believe in firearms being disassembled easily, and simply used the firing pin to push the cam pin out. Assembling, partially assemble the breach bolt and breach bolt slide, and now need to compress the extractor spring (along with the washer), and push/tap the cam pin into place. Almost as easy as disassembling/assembling my colt, and again, far easier than assembling the action on a colt.
As others have already stated, by far the best video for disassembling/assembling the Winchester SXP. Should re-make the video, optimizing the focus point and using specific part names. Could probably create two videos, basic break down of the SXP (according to the manual) and an advanced disassembly of the SXP, where by disassembling the forearm and side rails and action. I also noticed you already re-assembled the side rails and forearm during the re-assembly, so I had to go to the disassembly to figure-out where the C washer was placed. Regardless of how it's done, great video and thanks for taking the time!
Something that has also really bugged me with my disassembly, the receiver and magazine tube/throat! Think I figured it out, either use Brownell's magazine tube pliers or a sling wrench along with heat from a heat gun. They say use heat at the base of the receiver, with the receiver either facing up or up-side-down, I forget which, but avoid heating the tube for obvious reasons.
God how I hate thread-locking adhesives (eg. Loctite) on firearms! Wish the firearm/shotgun manuals would forewarn the firearm has been assembled using Loctite, and removing threaded parts may require heat! I've broken so many parts on my Winchester SXP due to the apparent use of Loctite!
SAFETY WARNING: I should also note, disassemble/assemble any spring action safely by placing the possible ejection side of the spring action downwards or in a safe direction. For example while disassembling the bolt, placing the side of the bolt where the spring will be removed downward ontop the desk while tapping out the pin. The desk or table top will safely contain the spring! Same with assembling, after the pin is partially inserted, do not look down into the bolt to check if the pin is successfully retaining the spring. Just continue tapping in the pin with a plastic handle of a screwdriver until the pin is fully inserted.
Also best to take photos while disassembling for reference material!
Thank you, really nice and complete video
helped me a lot
great in depth tear down thank you

Thanks so much I really appreciate it
So I took apart my bolt and now cannot get it back together. Was hoping for someone to have some tips and it doesn't bode well that you said it's best to leave it be. 😂 fuuuck, hopefully my local FFL doesn't mind helping me out here...shit.
"Hello. I realize this is an older video but I have a question. Can the magazine tube be removed without special tools? How? Thanks
Thanks. Very good.
Good in depth video, but out of focus almost the whole time which is pretty hard on the eyes
Anyone know how to get the bolt back together without sending it back to winchester or to a gunsmith? Need to know asap
My bolt drags halfway chambered, I noticed yours does also, is this a problem with winchester?
How do you remove the magazine follower? Mine is a 5 shot USA tube, but there is a crimp at the end of the tube.
Blurred to perfection!
Very usefull!God bles!
Awesome. Thanks a ton.
I'm having a problem with my firing pin not striking when I pull the trigger. I broke it down and the pain is sticking out when I push it all the way in so I don't quite understand what's going on.
Very helpful, thanks
Did you take the bolt apart, not just remove the firing pin?
What lubricant or oil is best for the sxp? I use Napier Gun Cleaner spray for my over/under, which leaves a light coating of oil. Will that be good for the sxp?
Great video, thanks :)
ive been working on one for weeks now.... it all is going back together fine, but the trigger is literally millimeters away from touching the sear therefore not firing the hammer? any ideas?
So helpful thank you!
hello, my bolt assembly doesn’t seem to want to go back in, I tried pressing down on the part where you’re pressing down on but it seems to get stuck every time
great vid, thanks very much.
the hammer will not release from the sear as the trigger is hair away from making contact with the sear? ive been doing this for weeks now and the same result every time??? anybody have any ideas? ive already gotten a brand new sear/sear housing assembly and its the same thing happening?
cant get my trigger to engage the sear and drop the hammer?
Can you help me., I have an SXP and this video helped me to put the safety back in so thank you so much., but now my trigger won’t pull at all whether the safety is on or off.. 😔
Yeah at the beginning of this video he should say in less necessary don't take your trigger assembly apart I cannot for the life of me get it back together.
@@terranceeddy8174just an update for you my guy., after this video … I had to call Winchester themselves and they made me mail in my gun and wait 2 and a half months for them to fix the trigger.. but I got it back .. and it works now but it was an inconvenience for myself if I could have got a refund … I would’ve without a doubt but I took it to the range and it shoots like new… it just sucks I had to go months without my home protected after paying so much… they’re just lucky nothing happened in that 2 months.. 🙄🙄
Great video. Do you feel that this mechanism is a durable mechanism?
thank you very good info
awesome video. Thank you for uploading it. One thing is your camera is not doing a good job when you hold something closer.
What kind of ruler are you using ?
I've got the defender model and it's got this weird thing where the mag tube and the barrel are a few degrees off center.. not the biggest deal but damn it's hard to ignore.
What size firing pin is in there mate? 3” or 3.5”?
Anyone able to reverse the safety on this?
👍👍
Cool video, but i prefer nitrile gloves much robuster
does any1 know if it EZ to change the barrel on a winchester SXP as it is a mossberg ? I assume all SXP barrels will work are inter-changeable ???

Is the safety reversible?
have you every gotten an answer to this question? I have the same one as well
@@kevinluman1354 From what I have been reading, the older ones were reversable but the new ones are not. I haven't taken the trigger apart to verify.
@@tloc1000 gotcha. from this video I'm not sure I want to attempt to take the trigger apart
Did you guys figure the safety reversal out? Winchester web site says it is reversible, but obviously no details.
Very first screw you removed on trigger group is stripped on mine... any advice ?
So idk how big or small the screw is. You can add a little bit of super glue and let the screw and screwdriver settle together. You can also use a thing rubber band in between the screw and screwdriver
Well explained thx (:
Can you use WD40 to clean them ?
NO
Your video is blury as fuck dude
if i did this there would be parts left over!
Then you didn't take it apart the same way you put it back together your starting with the middle instead of putting all the plates back on
Dude this is a bad reassembly video you don't give the camera time to focus on the part at all before you throw it is that little box really irritates me that I have to rewind and pause to see what your doing
👍👍
