Underrated review, i.e., this is an outstanding explanation of the inertia rotating bolt action on the Winchester SXP. Moreover, it explains why Winchester has zero issues in touting it as the fastest pump action in the industry. I own the SXP Marine Defender and I can't "outshoot the action." Besides the excellent action, this shotgun is extremely reliable, as I have had zero issues with it. Thank you for doing this review. Again, outstanding!
Jeff, thank you for such an intelligent and insightful review.. I just picked up my field SXP 12 ga could not have agreed more with you. The gun is lighter than my field 1300 12 ga faster and just an all-around joy to shoot! Thank you for taking the time to produce this informative demonstration. And a big thank you to Winchester for keeping costs low and quality high. Who cares where it's made, as long as it stands up to the quality and expected stamina of Winchester. Look forward to shooting this for many years to come. :)
This is by far the best review of the SXP period. Thanks, I learned a lot. I just bought an SXP Black Shadow 28" barrel 3" chamber @ Cabela's for $249.98 plus a $50 rebate Black Friday. That's $199.98 once the rebate comes in, crazy! Cheaper than a Maverick 88 which is out of stock everywhere around me. Seemed like a no brainer for my first gun. Plan to shoot clays with it, love that it comes with 3 chokes too. Thanks Again
I always felt that the Winchester pumps , 1200,1300 and even the SXP are very underrated . Years ago a gun dealer / smith told me the the Winchester 1300 is the best pump gun for the money .
Well with 870, and mossberg 500 which I have and a mossberg 600 ct but I also liked the stevens savage model 79 hell of a shot especially the screw like thread on the barrel which twists and locks in a great idea
I just picked up an SXP Marine Defender a couple of days ago. I really like the looks, the feel and the action of the pump. Now I have to make some time to run some ammo through it. Thanks for a great review, the best I have seen so far.
I have the Black Shadow 12ga 26" model. I absolutely love it! I own several other shotguns that I can use, but this one is the one I always go to. It feels great. It shoots great! It looks great! If you are looking for a pump shotgun, I would highly recommend this one! It really punches above its weight, in price, value, and quality. My SXP will be blazing away at the Dove Opener September 1st and it will be doing the same at Quail Opener in October! LET"S GOOOO!
These are on sale everywhere, In Canada you can't even get the Mossberg 500 under $500 but i picked mine up( Marine SXP 12 Gauge 4+1 pump) for $400. Cheap cheerful and reliable. They say it's the fastest pump you can get and I'm sure it faster then the Mossberg I tried before buying this one for a 100 bucks cheaper..
Man this was an excellent video. I know a thing or two about shotguns and have been around a few years. But this young fellow completely killed this on Winchester pump action history. I've always been partial to them since my dad hunted with a model 1200. Since then I've owned and hunted with several variations and always wondered why they weren't more popular. My dad's 1200 still to the day shoots foster syle slugs better than any rifled slug barrel made. And his is a 28 inch smooth bore and a full choke! Tell people this and they don't believe it. But its at least 60 years old and to this day I can hit milk jugs at 100 yards at will every single shot.
Just purchased this model SXP 28 inch Field 12/12/21 for $349 less a $25 instant rebate at Acadamy Sports. This video is excellent showing the sheer value ~ it is truly underrated and a bargain. Perfect addition to our collection. Thanks Jeff Johnson !
You would think while they were improving the gun over the 1300 they would have gotten rid of that plastic magazine throat... The plastic mag throat is the most common cause of failure in the 1200, 1300 and now the SXP. Now they improved it by making it one piece but it's still a source of failure.
Inertia is an objects resistance to acceleration. (engineer here) . You left out the part of Newton's law that says an object in motion stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force
I fired 2 shells through mine and the grabber arm in the pump assembly (sorry if that isn’t the right term, it’s the piece that reaches down and pulls the next shell into place) snapped in 2. Thankfully Winchester told me to send it in and they would fix for free. I just got it back and haven’t fired it yet. There aren’t many places to shoot nearby. The guys at Bass Pro, where i took it in had never seen that before and several of them had high praise for the SXP. Hopefully it was just a defective part and I won’t have any more issues.
I’ve had issues with mine ejecting a chambering rounds from the magazine tube. I’ve sent it back to Winchester & they sent it back saying there was no issues. I continue to have the same problem. Others that have shot my gun had the same issues. For my money I’d stick with the 870.
Inertia assist is nothing new for winchester shotguns.. the 1897 winchester and winchester model 12 have an inertia lock/assist on the bolt. When the round is fired, the gun recoils backward, and the forearm stays in place. This unlocks the bolt and then as the gun starts to slow down the bolt now unlocked comes back with the forearm making for a smooth pump unlike some of the newer style pumps without a inertia assist. I have a 1897 and model 12 and they're smoother then any modern shotgun I've held, including the sxp.
Inertia in general means resistance to CHANGE in motion. Object in motion stays in motion object at rest stays at rest until a second force is exerted.
Has anyone put a sling and bayonet on an sxp trench? I just bought one. I know its not the same but I'd like to try to make mine a pale shadow of the original. Work with what ya got right?
Yes, it has the invector choke tube system. As long as you're not shooting slugs through a full choke you will be fine. I own 5 different sxps and 2 sx4s. Best shotguns on the market for the money no doubt..
1:57 ,,, wow john Moses browning is reckless with that gun,,,,,, hahahaha JK ,,,, nice shotgun (y) been really debating on buying a sxp. im not sure, cant make up my mind
Hi my name is Walter I just bought sxp 20 gauge haven’t fired it yet but pumping it seem to be a little stiff I’m wondering if that is a problem please text me let me know or does it just needs a Lotta use the force flex up I seen others on TV especially the one you’re holding work so simple thank you your friend Walter call or text me thank you so much
I just bought one and hate the gun it is not consistent when it comes to the action starting the ejection plus it will not eject a 3 inch shell. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this gun.
With exception of the model 12, model 21, and model 50, Winchester shotguns were never really top tier shotguns... The model 1200, and 1300, pumps and the 1400, and 1500 semi-autos were parts sourced junk... It was easy to see why they made hard-core Winchester fans cry real tears. If anything this SXP is a huge improvement.
@@wulfheard I'll put my 1300 against any Remington or Mossberg pumps. I can run mini shells with no problem without any kind of adapter, never had a single issue with mine
A classic example of how free market principles do not create the best product, but rather the product that offers the best margins.
So True!
Well said. You are exactly correct. Browning should be ashamed for putting the proud name Winchester on such a flawed product.
Just looking at the SXP, catching all the YT reviews. Good review, though the background music did detract abit.

Just got my SXP defender in FDE. It's light and beautiful. Will try it out this weekend

Watching this review because Cabela's has the same $199.98 deal starting 5/30/24. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on this.

Do you know if the sxp field could shoot slugs for deer?
@@doeslayerdiaries sure why not? just use an open choke. Like any other shot gun.
You are welcome!
Man this is a good rundown! Thanks
I recently bought the hybrid hunter with realtree timber stock and FDE permacote . 12 gauge , 3 1/2” chamber . Cool looking gun !!!
Just bought the sxp 20 gauge. Man it's fun to shoot. Excellent for the price.
NICE VIDEO. I loved the history lesson here. I might pick up and sxp defender this week
The SXP is amazing. I use it for trap and it’s my new favorite.
these are a very nice shotgun for the low price!!!!!--bought a super X pump recently,,,shoots well,,,very lil' recoil...love these

Dang it. That's the worst and I feel bad. I haven't had any problems at all, so thank you for sharing this info.
Great and informative video.

Just bought the 20 Ga deer gun. That speed pump assist really threw me for a loop!. Hard to get used it right away. Hope I can.

Can't blame you if that's your experience. Can't beat an 870.. If you can find them these days.

Yea you are right in general. But in shotguns, it means the bolt tries to stay at rest. I appreciate your comment and you watching!
no music please
Awesome review! I know what I need now!
Grazie!!! Bellissima Recensione!!👏👏👏👍👍👍🥰🇮🇪👋
I like my black shadow more than my mossberg 500
Love my sxp but it doesn’t like certain brands of ammo I’ve found.

i'd like to see that baby.
Winchester is really missing a trick with these awesome shotguns for IPSC, they run the the roost in std manual class.
really helpful. thanks!

Have it oiled, they come from the factory without any lubrication.
Bună ziua cât costă o armă cal 12?
I think the music 🎶 from porn movie didn't help
Remington model “1870” 😂
I just bought one and hate the gun it is not consistent when it comes to the action starting the ejection plus it will not eject a 3 inch shell. I wouldn't recommend anyone buy this gun.
you should really finish that lesson on inertia lol. I think you're missing a big part of it.
I'm sorry, but I'd take the 1300 over the sxp any day..
Yea me too if they still made it.
Whether you know it or not the later generation 1300 was full of sourced foreign parts most made in Turkey.
Hard to watch because of loud and irritating music.
