"I got 99 problems and the boat's every one." 🤣😂 Another amazing video!
I’m amazed how that magical boat with all those defects got you through Norway, Swalsbard, Iceland to Italy. It’s mind blowing you all are in one piece and alive. Bravo Uma ❤
People have been sailing across oceans with boats in much worse shape for centuries.
Every boat has defects, both design issues an stuff that's simply broken.
If nothing is broken, it's not a boat.
@@jeffdege4786 Or she just splashed for her maiden voyage.
@@inventiveowl395 You clearly have a higher opinion of the QA of modern boat makers than I...
@@jeffdege4786 Well, I *am* a couchsailor from a landlocked country, never stood aboard a sailing vessel and the boat building channels I watch the most on youtube are Sampson Boat Co and The Art of Boatbulding so I agree my point of view has to be skewed quite a bit. For example, Sailing Yabá is on my watchlist as well, but I've always taken that as - "It's Brazil, things work a bit differently there.."
Amazing. You should change the opening sound to a car honking...
Rule is stated at 23:45 - 90% planning, 7% mistakes, 3% actually doing the project
I thought is was, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one" ;)
and 2% repairs so its actually 1% doing.
You are probably proud of yourself now 😂.
You are a kind generous soul! Saved my life by 30 odd minutes
This is not about wham, bam, thank you ma’am! It is about the journey, the life! Enjoy these amazing people or move on!
It’s wonderful to watch boat work without the drama of a fictitious timeline. 😂❤😊
What do you mean a fictitious timeline?
I really appreciate your problem solving attitude. From the start of your channel with your very limited financial means at the time, to your much greater spending power today. You seem to consistently find an approach that fits your requirements and means without overbuilding it, and able to accept the tradeoffs and limitations that come with it, and never skimp on putting the time and effort in. That has built you a boat (and a channel) that’s at any time the best it could have been. Very well done.
Sfg🎉😢😊ihuæ0q4ð😀❤
Nothing seems to be attached to the hull or is structural. And it still floats and was sea worthy. Crazy. Can't wait to see Uma's massive makeover. Blessings!
Flexible boats are strong boats. I hope Kika and Dan don't make UMA too rigid. A bit of flexible design allows the loading stresses to be transferred and shared. The brilliant work they did in step 114 bonding the deck to hull created a structural monocoque probably 'stronger' than the original design. My guess is that a few bonded ribs where the hull has deformed or bends too far would be perfect. I would rather sail a boat that bends under unexpected extreme loading than be in one that cracks and breaks apart.
@@charlielloyd1080 it's amazing that little boat has traveled so far. The structural issue of the mass and the lack of structural attachments that caused the boat to dimple on the sides, hopefully this can be replaced. After gutting a boat that much is there still value in Reglassing and reattaching of the boat has been molded to this flimsy life? For example is someone loses 100lbs, their body is forever damaged carrying all of that excess weight.. (skin stretched, joints ruined, fat cells large, stomach stretched). Can the boat be restored? 🥴
Demolition is great, but I can’t wait to see the Architects Unleashed on the rebuild 👍🏻
You two are just such a joy to watch. You're silly and fun and playful all while still getting that work done. It's my favourite part of the week when you come out with a new video.
I always look forward to the end of the week for an Uma vid. Made some chicken and coconut curry and sat down to watch.
Both Kika and Dan are so accomplished and talented, but the silly childlike quality they share together is what I love to see. One of the best channels on RUclips.
Watching you is never boring. Your energy is admirable. Kika's humor and the idea with the "Bond Girl" is just great🤩Dan, you are so talented in what you do and how you explain it. Good luck with your project...
Definitely the ocean cannot be taken out of a sailor, so the new mother ship and her dinghy. Thank you Dan for showing what was and how to fix the issue of your jigsaw and then come up with alternate solutions to make ways.
Painting a week's full of events into half hour clip flawlessly is an art in itself.
Luckily my dishes bucket floats!❤
Definitely a Bond Girl!
#SavingUma ❤
You two are the only one's I'd watch turn their home into a sailboat shaped cereal bowl. Can't wait to see who Uma becomes!
If I need to be recharged this is the place to do so you knock it out of the park every time all the time
As much as I find the boat fascinating, what I really love to see is your beautiful smiles and your warmth with each other.
You guys are getting better and better and better at production and editing, Bravo!!
stop it you know you only liked the bond part
there rest is great too
They still haven't worked out how to make things instantly happen by clicking their fingers.
From the first minute I was saying "you keep getting better with your photography skills!" One of my favorite episodes (mostly because of the photography) was going through the canal that was along side a meandering shoal river in England, (I think. ) This will be another favorite.
Intermitente problems are the worst. Glad it worked out. 3% actually doing, LOL, yes. My experience too. So nice of you to say so. Cheers!
That’s such a huge project to take on. We enjoy watching you solve each problem that comes up while having fun at the same time.
A sailing channel when the sailors finally get in the water! Wow. Even if it was only a paddle to do the dishes
The bond thing was just fun to watch. Love the humor. And your hair is still absolutely amazing.
Hi guys, I really admire you both that you can still love each other after living on such a small boat for many years. Thank you for everything you do on this channel you’re very inspirational I really love and appreciate you both Cliff from Logan city Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 from the island 🏝️
Thanks for the closed caption, and enjoy yours life's together
So true! Then the procrastinating. Baby steps will get you over the hills on the emotional rollercoaster. I wish you the best!
That boat loves you guys. Falling apart and still brought you half way around the world safely. Time to repay that love.
The bond girl sequence was a riot. Great solution to the lack of fresh water on the RV.
Thanks for the update and sharing another day in the life... I read that about 80% of our time is taken with maintenance and only about 20% of our time is productive. That is based on those who are actually productive and not spending hours watching RUclips, like me!!
The way that bulkhead came off. Wow !!
In Fort Walton Beach I slept on the floor of my house for many months. I could feel the props of the tug boat on the ICW moving the barge feeding the power plant.
Hi,having watched your channel for a long time,I realised that the learning curve doesn’t stop…it just changes arcs.Being an old man I wonder how we managed without all of the hand power tools that are available today.Thank you,Roly 🇬🇧.
As long as you are there; treat yourselves to at least two typical dishes from the island. Porcheddu, and Zuppa Gallurese. A little late in the season maybe but also Spaghetti with sea urchin.. Amazing dishes of the region.
As an avid billiards fan, when you say "Van-boating" I hear Van Boening, as in possibly the greatest American pool player to ever play, Shane Van Boening. So when you say it'd make an awesome last name, I cannot help but agree! I love you guys and I love the adventure you're on. I'm so excited to see Uma when you're ready to sail again!
Love Van Boating too. Van Boening means something else to me entirely:)
I admire your tenacity to just jump into projects and figure things out. I’m inspired to get my hands dirty on making some dreams happen. ❤️
Me too, Elyssa!
Wonderful to catch up on a Sunday afternoon with smart people enjoing life and problem solving. Also loved that "Mike Patey" moment :) ... Back to work!
About your jigsaw problem with kicking the breaker in your inverter. Electric motors are inductive devices and brushed motors can make for a very "dirty load" because every time the contact is broken from a coil the voltage goes to infinity theoretically. This "noise" doesn't harm the power grid, but your inverter needs to protect itself and it will if it is smart enough. Your inverter it seems is smart enough. It could be a fast current trip or a fast voltage trip. The other possibility is that even though your saw shouldn't draw more power than your inverters rating, it does so at a bad "power factor" -which means that due to a mismatch in impedance, the power you draw is higher than the power you use. Your saw might have a capacitor in it to correct power factor (and suppress electrical noise), and that capacitor may have gone bad in it's old age.
If it "fixed itself" it was likely the electrical noise from the brushes. You pulled the rotor, and maybe touched the contacts. The problem was burned away with use.
Don't know if you have thought of this or not (probably have) but when I'm using the RV on a beach I keep a two feet size pan with a little water in it to dip my feet in before entering the RV, and a towel or two on the floor to kinda dry them. Just really helps keeping sand out of your home (and your bed!)
sometimes, a blank slate is itself a beautiful piece of art.
Great work!
Way back when y'll started and did your intros on the end of the dock, wearing hats & beads an all sorts of garb. You got us all hooked on UMA. This rewound of undoing your doings way back when you did done that. Stay cool.
I’m so happy I found your channel some, not sure how much exactly, years ago.
I'm so stoked to see you two with the island of Tavolara in the background! It's my vacation spot since forever :) Hope you''ll find time to explore around you
i love the warm weather
I really like the editing in this episode! It feels a bit different, somewhat more snappy, and quite entertaining.
North eastern part of Sardinia is a beautiful place to be, and Olbia is a good starting poin to explore Costa Smeralda. Enjoy it as far as you can take time of from boat work, and it's a nice cruising ground oncefinished, and setting sail.
I definitely understand the 90-7-3% rule. I do the same thing. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Lucky people livin the dream , looks like a great spot your located in to make camp for a while . The James Bond 007 girl slow mo after doing the dishes made me chuckle , great way to start my Sunday morning is catching up with your show .
I'm loving your work and completely empathise with having to stop, to fix the gear, to fix the boat! Can be very frustrating. Our boat was hauled out for 4 months and I never even got the initial job done 😆 You're both a wonderful inspiration.
Oh God 🤣 Not the Bond segment... love the van life ~ boat life synergy.
Definitely top pick for cinematic experience and story telling! And adventuring and creative, well crap you guys rule at it all. Thank you for sharing!
I am really proud of you for your willingness to fight through this refit! Uma really does live a special life, and I hope she keeps you safe on the years to come!
I know this is a sailing channel but I really really like the builds....my favorite is the heavy susan ...
How uma went into the higher latuides is amazing 👍
The bond girl was spectacular! 😂
I'm currently tearing out the head on my Gulfstar Hirsch. You're an inspiration! I just happen to be 30 years older and by myself. I've lost my mind...
I love the simultaneous nod at 3:30
Things I very much admire on your channel: 1) The chemistry between the two of you; 2) How you can deal w/ challenges in a lighter/positive way (at least on camera 🙂); 3) Your seeking of balance in all situations; 4) Your skills to get the job done; 5) The fact you are true partners and do all together... Note: One mystery I see you carry: How is Kika able to be so fit and muscled toned with the life away from the gym? 🤔😀 All the best to both. Stay strong, together and on the route you are.
Ewww. To say another person would look how YOU prefer if they lost or gained weight is just ICK. Keep it to yourself.
I still can’t believe you sailed the UMA , all through that ice , And now you’re pulling that the part to make it safe LOL
You two are lucky to have found each other
Looks like you’re coming right along with the Major project, Mr & Misses Van Boating..!! 🚌 ⛵️
Every time I see you post a video it brings a smile. I've watched you through the years going from La Vagabond to your channel, skoolies, etc. If you can figure out how to fit a 6'6" guy in a sailboat I would haha. But I found my path and finalizing the last pieces to bringing this to a reality. Thank you for the inspiration of your journey and I look forward to keep watching. If you ever make it to the US, let me know and I'd love to meet up with y'all on my cross country adventure over the next two years. Best...
Remodeling. Be glad you only have 36’ to do. I’m 15 years into a first best guess 5 year remodel and probably at least another 5 if we add on remodeling the kitchen before I retire from working. Living in a remodel while you are doing it is mentally problematic. Especially as new repair projects pop up and take your time and money away from the “schedule”. I’ve found that writing stuff down and discussing ideas with the wife as talking points are key. I’m glad that in the basics, structure, electrical, ventilation I’ve done upgrades up to the max I can in each case the wise smart longer time to do choice has always paid off. 1. Its the best it can be so not worried about “can it be better?”
2. To be satisfied with very good top shelf work but not desire perfection.
3. To change the plan as things such as electronics have improve din 15 years. However I’m still glad that I ran 5 drops 3 ether/2 coax to every room and spot that I’d think I’d need it. Love my wired connections with all the wifi neighborhood chatter.
what a spectacular view to wake up to, that little light house is adorable
Killin’ it as usual, guys! You’ve been a huge inspiration for us in what we’d like to do to our Pearson 424 someday. We can’t wait to see the final results of UMA 2.0!
Hi, your both doing a great job , nothing like a ? good clear out ,you,ve been there before . Have fun and carry on calmly .👍👍
I am loving this series. You are both great editors.
Gutting boat, designing your new lay out, rebuild, it a marvelous and I am glad it's you and not an old man like me. All the best to the both of you.
Glad to be able to lend some support. Wish you guys the best.
That Bond Girl segment was everything 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Our wifi signal at the marina froze, right at 32.56 when you were talking about how boring it was to film you thinking. You were frozen for sooooo long! And it was soooo boring
The production quality is off-the-chain. Amazing.
You need a "Sawzall" type saw for demolition, not a jig saw which is used for finish work. It will save you tons of time.
This a thousand times yes. Sawzall is an amazing tool. Heavy reinforced blade and mechanism with aggressive teeth. Cuts through everything like butter.
Don't know if you noticed this or not, they live on a small sailboat. Space & weight is very limited. Sacrifices have to be made. Sorta like the no couch thing.
@@fnamelname3391 I think they know
@@fnamelname3391 I was going to say something very similar 👍
You need an outro with you guys eating in time lapse, it would be hilarious!
The jig saw mechanism is called a Scottish yoke. Back in the day mechanical engineers actually made some Perry cool stuff!!
Living 2 blocks from an Air Base, I totally understand the wait for the plane comments. When the F-18's lift off all I can hear is afterburners roar! If you are on the phone, I am forced to interrupt the conversation and tell the other end, you can hear me, I can't hear you wait a minute please. I am building an Overland Rig. The majority of my appliances are 220V . I run more than one inverter. I run a 4000W Carutu inverter 120V as well as a 5000W Carutu inverter 220V,( on demand shower is 220 V, 3,600 W) and two 2000W induction single element cooktops. Having made a few OOPs decisions , yes planning takes a ton of time. Things don't go as planned which is why I ended up purchasing 2 new inverters as my 3000W unit won't put out 3000 W, read the heater in the top set won't work. I trust things will go smoothly from here on in.
At 17:15, I am so with you when you say you hate problems fixing themselves. Have you ever noticed, when typing, what it feels like when you know you've hit two keys at once, in error - but the second key you hit is the next letter you needed anyway? Working that out takes three times as long as a simple typo you can just correct.
I love watching y'alls channel may the winds keep your sails full😎👍
Great video, keep it up 👍
Rebuild going ok,keep up 💯
What I love it is always your positive attitude
It makes me so happy to watch you go through the extra effort of fixing something, rather than just immediately tossing it out. Props! And now there is a RUclips video for that if someone else needs to fix theirs. 😂🙌
Please refresh my memory, where is Uma, again? I need to make myself a map to pinpoint all sailing channels' positions! Can't keep up. 😂
Loved the "Flashdance" homage, epic, though far removed from 1983, and I was almost middle aged then, so now, holy crap, how did that ever happen? Where did all that time go? You must have at some point sailed on some of that water that went under that particular bridge. From a carefree time to finding yourself an Old Codger but I can't say it happened overnight can I, it's been 40 years.
I really appreciate the Crocodile Dundee reference even if you didn't know you made it!
Oh… it’s known.
😅😂😅 Love the dish washing super model skit! Garden sprayer showers are the best. I take them frequently while 🏕 ⛺️ camping.
When faults fixes themselves you just know that the problem WILL happen again, just when you are in a position when the fault will be really bad or you cannot easily get the parts to fix it (or both).
You should meet up with the Zatara crew sometime. It would be amazing to see you all hanging out.
Uma-Terra! The RV is the right idea. I always used 10-80-10 as a guide for my projects in the chemical industry. 10% of time is the planning, engineering and purchase of major equipment; 80% is receiving and organizing materials, construction and pre-commissioning; the last 10% is putting everything in service, discovering issues and repairing/modifying, and lastly a review of the previous 90% to see if we could have done anything better or cheaper and document for use in small future improvements. So now I am comparing 90-7-3 to see if my 10-80-10 needs adjusting.
Blah, blah, blah, nobody’s interested.
@@abbbee8918 Ha ha ha! Showing interest is a way to encourage MJ Sailing as they working through this complicated project they’ve taken on. Plus it helps with income they earn from RUclips. Perhaps you will see an opportunity to add your positive comments to encourage the couple at some point.
@@abbbee8918 Ha ha ha once again. Sure they care. Blah blah blah but somebody cares
Regarding the solar panel. You should run a flir or infrared camera app over it as this will indicate any faulty section directly - even before immediately obvious through display!!!
I like those panels !
There so nicely made and handy to fold.
A kilowatt is per hour .. 😊
So there is no kilowatt per hour like amps per hour.
On our camper we have a 100 watt peak panel. That means they work average for 80% .
But out camper is sufficient as we do not use any AC power or airco to cool us.
Our fridge runs on gas.
You guys rock .. well done.
Makes sense that's it way harder than it looks. Love Kika's sexy hair flip. Yall are such a badass couple. Been a fan for quite awhile. I was actually thinking that yall must have spent a lot of time planning the final layout before ever starting.
"it'd be boring time-lapse of us thinking" - 100% thought for sure we were going to get the thinking time-lapse after this lol!
You two are amazing staying true to your commitment pushing through difficulties until you come out the other side this refit rebuild is no different Uma will be stronger and more sea worthy when completed. Seeing you get there is the fun.
Jet alarm clock? Feels like when I was at Allabroad in Gib!! 😂
Three percent sounds right. Just getting to the start line of new fittings is bloody time consuming. Good news is, there are two of you.
I used to have a great jig saw made by Bosh that was barrel shaped so the blade came out of the end, great for the work you are doing but some pricks broke into my garage and stole it.. I love all your content ! Good look with the refit..
Truly amazing, the view from the Van is awesome. You 2 ROCK!
I am amazed you were able to do all that sailing with the bulkheads not totally attached. Always enjoy your videos!
The bulkheads were designed that way on purpose. If they were glassed in it would create rigidity in a hull that is supposed to be able to flex and move. Rigidity on this particular design would crack the hull and cause catastrophic failure of the hull and the boat would sink.
I've got a Makita grinder I have abused off and on for about 30 years. It paid for itself the first day way back in the 90's. In the last few years I have been gradually switching to 20vdc battery lithium tools. I have 3 chargers and always have two batteries ready to switch out. It is nice to not have to mess with the vac power cords but sometimes the power from 120vac is good to have.
I also have a garden spray for a shower! Much smaller boat though, 6m, so no room for anything else
On this week’s episode of this old boat. Picking your weapon like
Mortal combat
honey in tea, yum.
And thanks for the jigsaw tip. I think mine's doing the same thing.
"you call that a knife?"
Hey Kika, It was great meeting you the other day through facetime with your Uncle Robert. Maybe we'll meet in person if you and Don visit Robert in the future.
you are such a happy couple, its a joy to follow your journey. i am thinking of buying an old boat to live on, fixing it, have ideas, be as much of grid as possible, sailing boat but not planning on much sailing, at least not at this stage, you guys are giving me validity to my crazy idea...a green boat:), anyhow, thank you for allowing people to follow your journey and learning new things!
off, cannot help it:)
This is not a comment on this video 😊 I hope you had a nice time in the warm and salty water in the middle of Germany! It was great to have seen you in person for a moment (emphasis on just swimming by)👍🏻 ... didn't want to bother you any further😎
I loved this day in the life video. I'm still amazed that you're able to do the work while the boat is in the water. Great stuff. We'll definietly check out the solar origami since we are in the market for new panels on Neverland. You showed pictures of your editing. I'm wondering what software you use since most of your videos are done with GoPro. Thanks for answering if you have time. Keep up the RV/Boatlife.
