Exactly. The problem is, if they were to go on with this insane renovation, and then half ways it turns out that there are even more problems and structurally the ship is irreparable, then they already spent a smaller fortune onto it and the boat would still not be able to withstand bluewater conditions. Then they would need another ship, probably not a brand new one, so they would need to put a lot of money into Uma 2.0 too.
I would suggest to sell Uma 1.0 in the Mediterranean area, a beautiful place to spend its retirement years. And then pour all their hearts and of course money into Uma 2.0.
Personally i like the Sailing Uma channel because they go into the details in a not overwhelming but technical enough way. Of course the Journey itself is also exquisite, not many sail so far north, i pretty much enjoyed the The Crinan Canal episode. It was lovely. But maybe a new boat would give some new momentum for their channel. If they were to find a boat that could be sailed right away, then the new boat projects could be done in manageable smaller steps.

Dan & Kika; My wife and I were just discussing you and your boat over dinner, and then I watched this video. For ages now we've been so impressed with how you've resisted the temptation to move away from "Right-size" to "too big". Background - we purchased our 1967 Ohlson 41, Phoenix, 45 years ago, spent a year resurrecting her from rot and rust (steel hull), then sailing her 5 years and 30,000 miles, to Europe, Scandinavia, Africa, S. America, and eventually home to San Francisco. We then sold her... and 35 years later (after kids and eventual retirement) we bought her back, spent another couple of years resurrecting her (again) and took off for Mexico. We've now returned... but we have some credentials, a love for older monohull sailboats, and simple systems. In years of sailing and buddy-boating with all manner of craft we've always been the boat where everything works. For our initial voyage we had a very well insulated ice box, and we were without cold beer for a total of two weeks in 5 years (it held ice for a month). On our first passage, upon arriving in the Azores, we were the only one of 30 sailboats who arrived with working refrigeration. We recently re-installed a Kerosene stove, which I love and will simply never fail. We aren't the Pardy's... we have a Perkins 4-108 diesel and we use it (though I'd love to go electric), and we now have a multi-function nav system with AIS and radar.
My point in all this long-winded prolog is, I believe much of the appeal of your channel is the fact that you've kept it small and simple, and that single aspect has allowed you the freedom to do more and go farther than many others, and to do so in a way that I think is somewhat easier to relate to than the "Floating Real World" emote to the camera style channel. It sounds like you'll probably need to move on from Uma, but I hope whatever you end up with, it will be at least her spiritual descendant. Given your background, talents, and proclivity toward unique interior features and electric power, your best move may be to secure a very sound, but faded, boat, and spend some quality time turning her into the electric power masterpiece which you deserve. I, at least for one, would love to watch the episodes chronicling that project.

That said, I was horrified at the minor issue with the hull in front of the keel after the atlantic crossing. If I'm honest, I was horrified at the repair in that temperature (near freezing if I recall correctly). And then Uma sailed along the Norwegian coast, spent the winter i Tromsø and then even sailed all the way to Svalbard and back to the Med! Makes part of me just want to depart i my 80's 27 footer and sail the Norwegian coast and part of me understand I need something less tired in its construction in those waters. I think You guys deserve a safe hull.

If you want to prolong this part of your life and take Sailing Uma to the next level, you are going to need a blue water boat. I think UMA needs a new piece between the front and the rear licence plates so to speak..
You guys made many exciting adventures with this 50yr old boat and gave her a new lease on life years ago . Time to sell her as is and use the proceeds as a down payment on a new or newer floating house worldwide traveling device… (my ,not asked for, opinion of course)
The time you spend fixing her up will directly be deducted of your (limited) adventure sailing time if you like it or not, and you still going to end up with a (perhaps more healthier) 50+ yrs old boat… I compare it with a car,not too many 50+ yrs old cars travel around the world , (they perhaps could ), but would never end up somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean . Safety and reliability are most important in your case. 10 yrs from now would you like to be traveling in a 10 or 60 yr old boat? Decisions decisions decisions…life is full of it… Good Luck you both !…my 10 cents (use to be 5 cents yrs ago) worth !!..

And that is the question for most boats. When do you "call it". I remember Jordan and Desiree's hard decision. I am sure you all have a lot of other factors playing into your decisions as well, budget, life/sailing goals and dreams, and only you can decide whether Uma is the right boat for that. Yes she is a light-ish production boat, but she is fast, has excellent sailing characteristics and you know her well. She has been a wonderful platform to try all the things you all have done (thinking of the electrics for one). I expect you all are familiar with Sailing Magic Carpet, have you seen The Duracell Project (holy fiberglass batman), both huge refit projects, how much time do you all want to spend in the yard? Alternately, even a lovely blue water cruiser is going to require a bunch of work. I understand that Croatia may be more friendly to DIY-ers. I have a 1959 wood yawl, but I don't live on her, and she will not cross oceans again under my watch. Good luck.

Additionally La Vagabond have a few more viewers with the stuff that brought, like income and a great financing deal for Vagabond II, which in turn allowed to turn Vagabond II in a charter, which allows ...
... "bigger boats" aren't necessarily better for the cruising the two do either. Bigger boats, more cost, more complex systems, more maintenance with more expensive spares. Indeed one moves on an exponential curve there. And they are inherently less sustainable and environmentally friendly. The most sustainable boats are always refits.

This episode gave me so many feels!
To think you took the money you could have spent on a couch to buy a boat that couldn’t even sail. And with no prior experience, and virtually no budget, resurrected Uma from scrap into such an incredibly capable and customized floating home. But even more than that, the three of you became an adventure team and built a worldwide community of followers who are invested in your lives. The thought of saying goodbye to Uma I is a sad one for sure. But Uma is far more than a hull, mast and some sails. She’s an icon, a lifestyle, and an ideology. Uma will embody her next incarnation just as fully as she has her first. ❤

There's no question that in the hands of a yard or with the two of you doing the repairs yourself, Uma could certainly be put right again. But what would "putting her right" mean? After all the expense and labor, you'd still have the problem which was clear from the start; Uma is a light, coastal cruiser, and not built to brave the North Atlantic, the Arctic Circle, and the Mediterranean as she gloriously has. It's a testament to Kika and Dan's brilliant skills as seafarers that Uma has made it as far as she has in this, her second life, but take it from someone who sails his restored 32-foot 1936 wooden power boat the length of Long Island Sound and out into the ocean along the New Jersey coast, -- the potential for an old boat to meet its Maker unexpectedly is a constant threat no matter how diligent the upkeep and maintenance. It's one thing to have a catastrophic failure of the hull or rigging in sight of land, but a mid-Atlantic breakup on a return trip westward is something those of us who have grown to treasure you both pray you won't chance. There's nothing sadder than retiring a beloved boat. The heart aches, but Uma has earned her dignity and her rest, and the two of you deserve a hull under you that you can trust in the heavy seas and adventures ahead. Best wishes to you both!

In 7 years of ownership, I pumped basicaly the aquisition cost of her again, in repairs and modernization. She was (well, still is, just not mine anymore) a 1988 40" German Freer's project and the money I put in her was well worth it. As much as I like Uma, she is now over twice as old as my Mythos was. Someone mentioned Jordan and Des and Atticus and they are right. If you go too big it'll be a lot of effort to handle shorthanded. When my boat was sunk by a tankship in 1990 I was given enough to buy anything I wanted but my wife/crew cautioned me not to go too large because of this "shorthanded" thing. I ended up with a 40ft Swan and now that I'm 90 I'm very glad I didn't go bigger. Also, you really can't trust crew, except your wife because of the "not my boat" syndrome. I think Uma has taught you a lot, so much so that you’re able to answer your own difficult question. Nothing lasts forever and once you wrap your head around a new boat things get very exiting, et voilà a new journey begins…that’s how it happens. Look forward to what you decide.

I wouldn’t be to dishearten. I look at the other videos, where the couples are renovating their boats. The issues they have where it wasn’t so obvious when they bought them., are far bigger than yours. So chin and move forward.
It is a bummer because of the hard work you both put into uma. You have made a brilliant job on her. 👍👍👍👍

As I understand, Uma already was close to be scrappend when you picket her up. And what a life you gave her! Even if she had been new, all the adventures you put her through would have been remarkable. And she was already in her second life. And what places she could visit, what storms she did weather. Your interior rework made it into an outstanding boat, I am surprised no big boat maker copied her design.
On the other side, as you described, for a full refit, you would have to change half of the boat if not more. At some point you are just chasing behind a structure which already gave more than ever could be expected.
She should be preserved by all means, but considering you might plan some more demanding travels, finding a new home for her might be the better idea. Someone who cares for her, but doesn't plan to cross oceans. Just among the your subscribers should be someone.
For Uma II, it would be interesting to know into which boat category you would be looking. Monohull or multihull? Which size? In any case, I would assume you would want to design the interiors. By the way, what became of the project you had polls about in the past? I cannot imagine there isn't a boat yard which wouldn't love to work together with you. Honestly, if you do the interior design and allow the yard to replicate it for sale, they should give you a new boat for free! And if not that, at least for an extremely generous rebate. But considering how much you bring to the table - not only experience but Uma shows how great designers you are - you really should get it for free.

I've been following you guys for a while now, I've seen every episode from the beginning so I know how much blood sweat and tears has gone into making Uma into what she is today. I have grown attached to you guys and your home on water through your camera lens. Uma has a special place in my own soul and it's not even my boat, so I can only imagine how this is making you feel. My father used to always tell me that nothing lasts forever, a bad time is just a spot between two good times. So to me you guys have always been extremely good at making practical decisions in terms of what is needed/achievable. I know you have been designing/working on a new boat design (Duas?) so the question is - if you're basically going to rebuild the entire boat, is it cheaper/more practical to build a whole boat or buy a new boat. On the other hand - it is your boat, you know it and you could probably do it, there must be a yard somewhere that will let you work on the boat - even if you have to leave Italy (Malta?) and there is an advantage to knowing your boat, plus I don't know what's financially viable for you at the moment. Either way good luck, looking forward to the next step on your advaneture!

By the way If you are thinking of building a new boat - Plucky of Sailing into Freedom is currently (or about to) start building an all electric - aluminium Mumby catamaran (Mumby is a consultant on the design) in Greece which might be interesting for you it's being done on a budget too (his old boat had a metal frame in GRP got struck by lightening which then delaminated it).

Uma is a one-of-a-kind, beautiful boat. The interior is simply unmatched in functionality and beauty in any other boat of her size that I've seen, and honestly she's even better than some larger boats out there. But honestly, fiberglass boats all have a lifetime, and while it might be better than wood boats, 50 years is pretty close to it. It'll be sad to see Uma go, even for us who have just enjoyed her by watching your videos. But if its time, its time, and honestly as these problems get worse it gets less and less safe to continue to sail her. A boat is not worth your lives, and if its not economic to repair then you simply will have to move on.
A lot of sailing youtube channels have been buying new from-the-manufacturer boats recently. I don't know if your finances allow you to consider that or not, but if you could find a builder to partner with you on designing an interior as excellent as Uma's it would be an exceptional and exciting project to watch.

Definitely a super big dilemma. May be doable in another part of the world where you can stay for a couple of years, and do the work. Perhaps Uma is trying to say she's tired, gave it all she had, and is ready to go rest, and eager to see Uma II.
    Best of luck guys.

if you do get a different boat, just don't buy a new boat the way some of the other sailing channels seem to be going. you're one of my favorite channels, and favorite sailing channel because of the amount of DIY you do, which has inspired me to do more of my own work instead of paying someone else to do it. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

    • @EUC-lid
      @EUC-lid Год назад

@@charlesharper2357 the Wynn's whole vibe has always been a lot more about making it to the point where they can afford a newer bigger boat. That was how they handled RVs, too. I'm most interested in the faults they discover with their new fast cat and how long they remain satisfied with the stock setup.
If Kika and Dan want to keep making the content their audience tunes in for, they'll do something to make UMA 2 their own. Either they partner with a boat builder to design their own floorplan with pro builders (like the architects they are) or they renovate an old (yet newer) blue water boat to continue on in the same spirit.
But hey, they've succeeded with UMA and if they want to keep the same formula going is entirely up to them. Maybe they want to succeed in an all new direction.

All your time and experience with global sailing and the hard labor of each tweak and repair are leading you to a decision that is hard to accept but easy to make. Sometimes just like houses, it's better to move to something that fills all your needs rather than try to invest and bandage in what you currently have. It's an emotional decision but you guys deserve an upgrade! Besides, new boat means more new adventures..
