Hi, I’m from “9years later” and he is still absolutely AWESOME 👏 Who saw that overwhelmingly beyond-description Tchaikovsky of his in Seattle last week?
For some strange reason it's been cut short on our master tape, which is why we had not put it up. But we thought despite being cut short it's worthwhile putting it out there. Sorry.
@@hansongnailyI'm probably too late but it's Mendelssohn's violin concerto xD I was so sad when the recording suddenly stopped and the next video began 🥲
advantage of competitions where you get to play more than a minute excerpt, a technical oopsie like that is miniscule compared to the overall performance@@axlcrush
Time and time again, the one who wins these competitions is the one who plays w the most heart, even if they don't perform it the most technically brilliantly. The judges want to feel inspired. It's not inspiring if you're just going through the emotions. This is a big reason why Chen has won this and the Queen Elisabeth. Doesn't hurt either that he was playing a powerful violin that allows for that intensity. See: Borisoglebsky, Adamyan, Khatchaturian, Fischer, Kamio, et. al
He is much better now than back then, but of course, he had the pressure of being a competitor here, so is understandable. I admire him, he's so passionate.
Incredible, at that time it was already apparent that he would be a famous Violinist.Ray Chen has talent, pasion, tecnique, and a lot of magic..He makes the violin talk about him through every note.thanks you for sharing this unpublished musical gem. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia
Ray Chen soy mexicana, te acabo de encontrar y estoy fascinada con tu profesionalismo y tú magnificencia como violinista. Una gran queja el concierto está inconcluso y sería bueno que lo volvieran a subír para escuchar el gran final. Felicidades.
Yes of course he’s handsome. Thank you so much Ray, I really really enjoyed watching you playing with such passion and sensitivity too, and this must be a complete endurance piece for you too.....unfortunately the video stopped before the end. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
It's amazing how much more grown up and focused his sound is in the Queen Elizabeth Comp vs this! He really grew as a musician quickly, probably my favorite violinist of my generation :D
Nowadays not that much, but this footage, the 19 yo Ray Chen, reminds me of Bruce Lee. The king of Jet Kun Do meets the young Prince of Violin. That was my first thought when I first saw this footage.
Interesting how at the high B of 2:01 he slipped because of connecting the notes, and in 2015, at the same phrase (1:11) he lifted the bow to play the high B separately: ruclips.net/video/I03Hs6dwj7E/видео.html. He's also technically much smoother in the 2015 recording in my opinion.
Ray Chen your performance of Mendelssohn`s violin concerto was excellent .especially the second movement which you played with great emotion and tenderness. It`s a pity that the third movement was cut short .. One minor point the top/ high notes in your arpeggios were very soft and often not heard.esp. in the first movement
how about this conductor...doesn't he know it's concerto for VIOLIN & orch. NOT freakin DRUMS & orch. ...what a row...liked the soloist..thanx...ps. i agree with BJoulie!!
What happened at 2:03? I'm not angry that he made a mistake like some people in the comments are, but I'm just wondering what happened. The popping noise almost sounded like he broke a string, but he kept playing so it obviously wasn't that.
at 2:03 he had a little accident he put to much bow pressure and his finger slipped which caused the weird plucking sound and then it kind of got cut off.
haha Anthony, true. I've seen So-Young Yoon completely drop the ball towards the end of the runs in Wieniawski 1, the video is on youtube, have you seen it? Just last weekend I saw Julia Fischer play Prokofiev 1 and she missed a pretty important high note. I actually saw Ray the same weekend play a recital, he missed the beginning 3rds in the Beethoven-Kreutzer but still did with the audience what he did here, connected. After seeing him live, he's a great violinist for showing that 'human' side of music. I think nowadays musicians are being taught to be more mechanical than like this, musical and expressive.

He has improved IMMENSELY since then… look at his new footage. MUCH more mature sound
Using the same Strad and his other instruments as well
his eyebrows have been playing ever since then.
his performance recently though shows his improvement !
1:50 for some reason my brain went "ohh colourful double basses! funky!" before realizing it's not the instruments but the lighting lol
The violin tone is just so sweet. Great playing by a young player. A superstar in making.
Look at him now, he's one of the best soloists out there!! You predicted the future lol

I heard this gentleman perform this piece last night at the Hollywood Bowl. He was outstanding. And very well received.

His finger simply slipped off the string.

You mean there is a pop sound?
@Yanjun Sun good thing ur opinion wasnt the one that decided he got first place
C'mon it's normal, his pinky maybe Is too sweaty Or maybe his hand isn't quite in the right position for the pinky
Does anyone know the biggest problem here?

his finger probably fell off of the string when trying to play the high e so that’s what made the sound. not a string pop thankfully😂
@@danieljo9214 Ahh I see. Thanks for clarifying!
Ngl I was confused like "why did he not switch violin with the first violinist" And I realize that it's not a string broke
hi, the performance has been cut short on the video - could you possibly post the full video? thanks.
What was the mistake at the start everyone is talking about? Non-violinist over here.
