I LOVE ROBOCOP!!! This movie just like the first was a fun mixture of humor and violence which I think makes for a fun watch. I'm really glad they had Peter Weller as Robocop again, he played Robocop so well in the first movie so I was happy to see they were able to get him for the sequel. Loved the practical effects and the stop motion effects. Overall really enjoyed it but I can't say I like it more than the original, I think the original Robocop will always just have a special place in my heart. Definitely was still a fun watch. Those commercials were something else lol. I hope you enjoy my reaction😄

They absolutely do not make movies like this anymore. My understanding about the suit, they constructed a new one for Robocop 2 because Peter Weller had such a difficult time with the first one. It was very heavy and he apparently became very dehydrated while wearing it. The second one was far more comfortable. I knew you'd love the makeup and prosthetics. After Murphy electrocuted himself to purge all those directives, his display shows No Directives. I've always felt, at that point, he was Alex Murphy again. Not Robocop with parts of Murphy. All Murphy. Just my theroy

The are plenty of older movies with practical effects that don't hold up today. Look at movies like Carnosaur or Rawhead Rex, plenty of shlock from yesteryear.

I agree, using actual props will always trump cgi. 2023 and CGI dinosaurs or anything else still looks like a cartoon. The only time CGI works is when it's used as a background.
I always felt that the scene where they reprogram Robocop is a great example of what's been happening to a lot of our favorite movies and characters being changed in reboots/remakes for a "modern" audience.
Ironically... its basically what happened to Robocop 3. Never was much into Robocop 2 personally (oddly i found it a little to gross, still cant really watch the brain removal lol), but 3... 3 was a travesty.
The "Thank you for not smoking" clip got used in theaters back when this was new and run before the movie as a no-smoking reminder. I do recall seeing it a few times when I was a kid before movies.
RoboCain and the scene where he stalks for the mayor genuinely terrified me as a kid, I think the stop-motion animation adds to the creepiness. I had the video game and I had to look away from the loading screen every time because RoboCain’s silhouette could be seen on Robocop’s helmet.

I remember being scared of robocop's death on the nes version of robocop 2. they'd show him disembodied, similar to how he looked after cain's crew dismantles him.
I've remembered that line "Behave yourselves!" for decades...so long I actually forgot where I even heard it until a few years ago. Still pops into my head every time I see things fighting (people, animals, insects, robots, whatever)
The disembodied brain and eyes of Kain watching and processing his own body be disassembled is actually terrifying. He killed the girl not because of programming, but because he is a psychopath and she didn't come save him from the hospital. There was a scene between her and the kid explaining he would not forgive them.
I think he killed her because she didn’t give him any nuke. Remember he put he claw arm out? He was asking her for nuke and when she didn’t give it to him he killed her.

I don't think that was the case with Cain, though I'm sure it was part of it. I think it was "programming", but not of the digital variety. It was an underscoring of Cain's addiction; he had a moment of personal familiarity and affection, almost instantly overwhelmed by the reality of "mission = drug". Given that RoboCop does a lot of investigation of the conflict between humanity and the dehumanizing aspects of mass technological society, I think Cain was something of a comment on how addictions and other psychological/physiological traps can reduce a person to machinery in their own manner. There's also the role of such considerations as part of the larger dehumanization of the masses engineered by those who would profit from such obscenity.
@@michaelccozens I remember way back in Jr. High, watching an old Star Trek rerun. Kirk was talking to these advanced beings who were nothing more than brains under glass domes. The brains would flash when they talked. That was the first time I ever heard of that idea. Then "The Matrix" took that idea to an amazing new level. Who knows? Maybe we are all just experiencing an elaborate simulation of a physical world. I just wish we could alter things to work the way we want them to like Neo ultimately figured out how to do. i was always curious about the number of deaths caused by Magnavolt systems due to glitches myself . they have all this high tech but we also see in their world so many high tech things not working as planned . you gotta think there's some serious numbers of people injured by that car defense system if not killed outright.
Exactly, I mean, the second film is continuing on with the police strike from the first movie. The ending to this movie is a set up the plot for the third movie.
The stop motion animation effects by Phil Tippett are frickin awesome and epic! No CGI, back when VFX were done in camera with Matte paintings and miniatures.
I think when Cain killed Angie @24:40 it was maybe more a case of what she said inadvertently causing him to snap: "It'll take some getting used to but... it'll be great, Cain" He knows things will never go back to how they were - echoing the situation with Murphy and his wife - plus the fact that she betrayed him along with Hawk. Unlike Murphy, though, he succumbs to rage (and probably withdrawal symptoms) and lashes out.
One of the best secuels ever! Irvin Keshvner made a great job in this and could keep the Robocop's scence pretty well. By other side Cain and Hog are both very respectful villain. And finally Robocop in the motorcicle Rocks!
Adam Savage from Mythbusters openly states he feels Cain is the greatest stop motion puppet of all time in terms of mechanical design and functional form.
The animatronic effects used when Robo was just a torso were created by Rob Bottin, who also did all of the amazing animatronics for The Thing (1982). He was a master of bizarre and twisted practical effects in the 80's and 90's.

I agree with you. And I love Peter Weller’s movements in this movie. He really had the robotic movements down. It’s a shame he never played Robocop again after this movie. Part 3 would have been better with him in it.
Robocop is one of the most tragic heroes in sci-fi history. I saw that movie when it came out and as a kid I thought it would be cool to be like him. Now as an adult, after watching his scene with his wife again, I would rather die than become a cyborg... I mean, imagine your brain inside a metallic body where your senses are gone... PS: I still remember a phrase from the Robocop comics I was reading back then: "This isn't a new life, this is a living death".
Talking about his interpretation of the character for his performance as Murphy, Peter Weller said "He was r*ped! They took EVERYTHING from him." There was a manga and anime mini series called "A.D. Police" about a tactical police unit in the city of Mega Tokyo trained and equipted to fight renegade "Boomers" (slang term for androids). One of the stories, called "The Man Who Bites His Tongue," is about a cyborg cop. Billy is a cop in the A.D. Police who was fatally injured in a battle against a Boomer and has been resurrected as an armored, super strong cyborg (with a visual design reminiscent of Robocop). Billy can physically outfight Boomers which allows the A.D. Police to avoid using guns and explosives to take down Boomers in densely populated urban areas. The title "The Man Who Bites His Tongue" comes from the fact that Billys tongue is the only part of his body that still has sensation, and he often bites it so the pain will remind him that he's human. He struggles with the effects of chronic sensory deprivation, emotional isolation, and the stimulant drug he keeps getting shot up with to keep him from mentally shutting down. I won't spoil how it turns out in case you want to check out the story. The manga was translated into English, and the anime has been uploaded on RUclips. Also, there is a plot synopsis on wikipedia. The anime is weird because it looks like they ran out of time or money to animate the story in he middle of making it. Much of the climax gets told using still pictures drawn in a style that doesn't match the design of the anime.
"Do they live in the same society that we saw earlier? These people are delusional." That committee is exactly how those types of groups are and it perfectly describes them. It's like the people live in another universe.
Robocop has elements of social commentary in it. The part with the people saying stuff like 'Robocop needs to be nice' is a representation of the 'Mom groups' that were trying to censor everything (and still are to a degree). This can also be seen in South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut. My own experience with these kinds of censors comes from their reaction to Power Rangers, which debuted in the US not too long after this movie did.

I saw this movie in the theater about 6 times. It was awesome. It tripled the violence, action and gore, but still had humanity in a weird way. I wish they had given Nancy Allen more to do, but I heard the director disliked her or women in general, and had her scenes trimmed. Great reaction! ❤️
It was I think more that Kershner didn´t like Nancy Allen. She told in interview Kershner was a "miserable human being" and he didn´t liked her and made it clear on set. Out of 15 films directed by Kershner, including Empire Strikes Back and 007 Nerv say never again, there hasn´t surfaced any other negative comment Kershner´s behaviour on women, so based on those I simply believe this was case of personal dislike. That is sad as I really like Nancy Allen as actress and Lewis as character.

It's funny. So many people say this movie was gory or gross and point to the brain removal as an example. Yes, there was some gross stuff in here, but it was Toxic Waste Man in the first movie that traumatized me so badly that even in reactions today I won't look at it. Sadly, even while looking away, the sounds are still enough to gross me out. 🤮🤮🤮
@@thejamppa Nancy Allen is a class act and a lovely soul so I tend to believe her account of Kershner's behaviour towards her. Mark Hamill apparently didn't have a great relationship with him either during Empire. Sean Connery didn't have good things to say about him also after making Never Say Never Again with him.
21:48 they did the same with Murphy, spinal cord, brain, and eyeballs. that's how he has memories, and feelings, he still has his human brain. they show in more detail of the procedure in the 2014 version of Robocop. i really like how they do the social commentary in these films, in the mock commercials they have, really well done! loved the reaction to a classic! 👍
- Not to be intentionally confrontational, but I don't think that's correct, if all there was was a brain, spine and eyes, then why would they have made him a food dispenser? You only need a food dispenser if there is a functional digestive tract. Also, in the opening scenes when he is first being augmented, one of the technicians specifically stares "We were able to save the other arm" before Dick Jones tells them, to hack it off, because OCP didn't want biological arms - now logically, if they were told to chop off his arm, it kind of obviously would imply that there will be a torso left that the arm is going to be hacked off of, so, if they are removing the arm from the torso, then the torso (and hence the digestive tract) will still be there after the arm is removed - if the torso isn't going to remain, then they wouldn't have phrased it to remove the arm, they would have probably not said anything. Just saying, the specific lines in the script don't really mesh with the idea that he had nothing left of his body other than a brain/eyes. Also, as a side note, While watching this I was kind of wondering what purpose the eyes would have served, other than to look cool and creepy for the movie. Cain didn't seem to have any eyes on his mechanized head, no face of any kind prosthetic or otherwise, just an animation on the screen, so the eyes did not appear to even be present, and of course, since there was no face or eyes visible, one would assume that it was getting some kind of visual input through sensors, and so, kind of doesn't make sense that they showed that they kept the eyes. So yeah my theory is it was just because it looked cool, having the eyes hanging off the brain in the jar like that, lol.

@@Lugnut73 - I haven't personally seen the remake, I generally for the most part tend to like the original of a movie much more than the remakes so have kind of mostly stopped watching remakes, with a little bit of an "Why-Can't-They-Come-Up-With-Their-Own-Ideas" attitude now about movies, in the last few years seemed like there was a flood of remakes all over the place. To give you an idea, I am an absolute mega fan of the Star Trek Universe, so when they came out with the new ones, starting with everyone young and brand new fresh out of the academy, I was very resistant, and originally wasn't going to watch it, but I eventually got around to it, and was pleasantly and shockingly surprised at how good they are, Christopher Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldano, Karl Urban, John Cho they ALL played their roles so well, and everything kept so true to the original style, one of the only remakes I have seen that was as good as the originals, and honoring Leonard Nimoy with his part in these movies, total respect, love them a lot. It is a shame we lost Mr. Anton Yelchin, he was quite frankly amazing as Chekov. So, yeah most of the time I don't tend to watch remakes much, sometimes it can spoil the memories of a great movie a bit when they make a new cash-cow copy and it has none of the original movies magnetism. Anyways, thanks for replying back with a positive manner, most of the time, people want to jump into an internet argument if you say something that contradicts them, so you Sir are an uncommonly positive attitude, which I respect :)

But it looked like Cain had had two faces, one with eyes behind the knight-like helmet head which he can turn around to present a screen as a second face to show his virtual face to Angie on it . But unlike Murphy his real face was not preserved, because Cain was one of the most wanted criminals of Detroit and people would never believe him to be a trustworthy police officer now. So, OCP had to keep secret the identity of Robocop 2 (= Cain) to the public. After Cain's second death however OCP wll tell the public who he was, but that it was solely the idea of evil Dr. Fax to choose a criminal's brain without telling the company and finally make her alone responsible for the massacre committed by Cain.
First movie is a masterpiece, love it. RoboCop 2 is a bizzare, strange and eclectic experience. Still can't decide it's a good movie or a bad one. I guess that's why I like it.
I'm with you about the first one being better. The character interactions were a little more developed, and therefore more satisfying, and that's what matters most in a movie. But this one had some WILD ideas that were really well illustrated by all of the amazing effects, so it was definitely fun to watch!
I always like the blue armor in this one, even the black parts shine up and the chin guard covers the whole chin too. This was Irvin Kershners last movie to direct too. Yeah the score isn't the same since it's by another composer but I still like it. I know the 3rd movie will not be here or anyone else since pretty much everyone hates it, but I for one like the 3rd movie and don't care what anyone says about it. I am glad to see you watching this movie and got it out of the way too while I'm still waiting for others to watch this but still waiting. Another note is most of the arcade games you see there are done by an old game company call Data East and they did Robocop 1 and 2 arcade games too.
A couple of fun facts; - Peter Weller agreed to come back for the sequel if they made the costume more comfortable. - You mentioned the 'look' of Robocop's armor... Held over from the first movie, it's an automotive finish... Because he was made in Detroit... 🙂
actually his first suit had more grey/silver , in the sequel he had more blue/purple tone to his suit. not exactly a hold over both suti were givien an automotive finish but they were different. it was most certainlya different suit altogether.
just a fact here, there has never been a reactor to the Robocop TV series that is 22 episodes, yes it isnt played by peter weller BUT you'll get tons of lore, i swear you'd like it.
Watched this before I turned 10. That robocop puppet had scarred me for YEARS. And robocop has been my favorite hero since childhood. I loved watching him but those puppet scenes😵😵😵😵
When the first Robocop came out in theaters I was around 11 or 12. I thought it looked ridiculous. Until I actually saw it and immediately fell in love with it. Surprisingly though, I still haven't seen this sequel, even though it's now... 33 years old? Holy shit...
Interesting you mentioned Starship Troopers. The guy who directed that, also directed the first RoboCop. Another fun fact, the guy who directed RoboCop 2, also directed Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. It explains why the animatronics and stop motion animation is so good too.
All the prominent arcade machines in the Duffy scene are from Data East, the company that put out the Robocop game. I believe Duffy is introduced to a Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja cab.
The way I always looked at the scene where Cain killed Angie was because she insulted/upset him, not that his programming took over. Right after she says "it'll take some getting used to" he flies into a rage and kills her. Seemed to me like for a moment he forgot what had been done to him and then he was reminded by what she said.
Lauren, so enjoyed your reaction and comments on this. Not sure how you'll feel about Robocop 3. After the satire of the first and the craziness of the second, they tone it down a lot for 3, with a PG rating. Peter Weller also opted out, but his replacement Robert John Burke does a pretty good job. It's a fairly routine adventure, and has a few TV actors that went on to bigger things.
Burke does fine with what he's given (and since the perfect Weller is gone) but yeah it feels so much like a made for TV thing closer to the TV series than the first two films.
Fun fact: Peter Weller was once a mime in real life prior to becoming a guilded screen actor if you dnk. May be why he's known for having such good talent in the robotic movements necessary to pull off the cyborg thing
hey, i watched along on patreon...first time i saw this since i was a kid!!! i gotta admit, the editing was somewhat choppy with this movie. this movie still works though. Robocop 3 though...i think is better left in the vault. quite the nostalgia trip so thanks for that. i played NES game for hours on end in the 90's. this movie had a hand in shaping my childhood. thanks for reacting to this!!!
Frank Miller (Sin City, 300, The Spirit, Daredevil) wrote the screenplay for Robocop 2. Which is why the Robocop fight at the end is basically a superhero fight. Frank Miller also has a small cameo as Frank the Chemist.

There were some cartoon sound effects. When RoboCop gets knocked off the van by the electric pole and when he and RoboCain are falling from the building at the end.
RoboCop 2 usually gets quite a bit of hate but I've always loved both of them love the neca Robocop in the background in that tar man from Return the Living Dead and the Terminator head I got the same one and I think I see a little Christine down there I was like 5 years old when RoboCop 2 came out
When Rob Bottin (who also did The Thing) delivered the Robocop torso and animatronic head on set, the director and producers were so impressed that they added the scene between it and Dr. Faxx to showcase it. If you love stop-motion, you should watch the 1933 King Kong. It's the father of stop-motion (not the first, but certainly the most influential). It inspired generations of stop-motion animators. Most notable Ray Harryhausen. Harryhausen is the only special effects artist to be an individual film genre. Harryhausen studied under Willis O'Brien, who did the effects for King Kong and the original Mighty Joe Young (and the underrated Black Scorpion). My favorite Harryhausen films are Jason and the Argonauts, The Valley of Gwangi (kinda of a remake of King Kong that substitutes a T Rex for Kong), and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Another great stop-motion film is Dragonslayer. Phil Tippett, who worked on the Robocop films, handled the animation. It features my absolute favorite movie dragon.
Abandoned factories are about the easiest locations to secure other than woods. They shot scenes for the Avengers, where Black Widow is held hostage, in an abandoned factory right by my house in Cleveland. Local artists use the same place she was tied up constantly and it is usually graffitied with "Scarlet sat here" on the ground at that spot near the edge.
A lot of people knock the remake but honestly I'd recommend it. It has it's charms, his testing against the robots and reintroduction at home is definitely a bit of fun and the action is very clean. It's not as campy as the original but it definitely has its moments. A slightly different, um-- bucket of bolts?
I'm so happy you enjoyed this movie. It gets constantly criticized by the RoboCop community, but I have always thought it was a solid sequel. The action in this movie is so much fun. Now, watch RoboCop 3 at your own risk. Lewis is the only reason to watch it.
As an adult the first movie resonates harder with the more biting satire and tighter storytelling but the dope stop motion action scenes of the sequel made it my favourite when I was a kid (and probably shouldnt have been watching either but hey ho). Curious if she will do the absolute farce of a movie that is robocop 3 :)
RoboCop 2 is one of my favorites one hell of a fight scene between him and Kane at the end but Cain looked awesome as RoboCop 2 replacement lol Glad you enjoyed this movie it's more mainstream type of storyline compared to the first one! If you do continue watching the RoboCop franchise RoboCop 3 is not that bad but it has its flaws but it's an interesting storyline for what it was at the time it came out ☺️
I'd only stick with the first two Weller movies. I loved the battle at the end! Tom Noonan (Kane) was a great Frankenstein Monster in 'The Monster Squad', too!
Whats funny is that the sounds of the ED209 from RC part 1...like when he's searching for the stairs....well Disney reused that sound in the last episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" when at the end of episode there are those shielded battle droids...yeah those droids use the sound

This was the final film to be directed by Irwin Kershner. Director another classic sequel, Star Wars:Episode V-The Empire Strikes Back (1980). The original score by Leonard Rosenman is very good. As close to Basil Poledouris' score from the original and just as good. This did feel more like a comic come to life indeed. All done for good reason. This was first of the 2 sequels to involve comic legend, Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) as an screenwriter. He played the lab scientist who died in the trailer during the police raid. Miller originally wrote a lot of material for each sequel. RC2 is considered the best of the sequels. RC3 gets a whole lot more hate because of it's lowered quality. Galyn Görg who played Angie, Kane's girlfriend died in 2020 from cancer. RC2 was Peter Weller's last time as Murphy/Robocop on film. But he returns to the role in 2 video games:Mortal Kombat 11-Aftermath (2020) and the upcoming Robocop:Rogue City (2023). Since before RC2, Robocop launched a full-fledged comic book franchise. Series, mini-series, crossovers and such. 5 different publishing companies in nearly 30 years. Frank Miller's unused material from the movies were re-utilized in Avatar Press' RoboCop (2006-2009).
Lauren I think the paint job on Robocop that gave that purple to blue tints is a type of paint called Pearlescent Paint, you will see pictures of sports cars that often use this to show off the cars curves :). Enjoyed your reaction including the gory Cain brain smush at the end lol.
Kurtwood Smith (Clarence) said that, because Peter Weller is such a dedicated method actor, he wanted everyone to address him as Robocop or Murphy when he was in costume, so Smith went out of his way to always call him Peter instead.
With his face mostly hidden and the limited mobility of the Robocop coatume, Peter Weller's voice acting plays a big part in the effectiveness of his performance. For another great movie with a great voice performance by Peter Weller, you should watch the two part animated movie "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" based on Frank Miller's graphic novel series.
Another underappreciated Peter Weller movie to check out, The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension . Peter plays buckaroo banzai, a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock star who has to save the world, along with his trusted allies, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, from a battle to the death between evil red aliens and good black aliens from Planet 10. It is filled with 80's schlock, and it is ridiculous and over the top and is great because of it.

They absolutely do not make movies like this anymore. My understanding about the suit, they constructed a new one for Robocop 2 because Peter Weller had such a difficult time with the first one. It was very heavy and he apparently became very dehydrated while wearing it. The second one was far more comfortable. I knew you'd love the makeup and prosthetics. The puppet they used was quite an engineering marvel. Always always always Gold Lauren. I appreciate all the work and love you bring. Peace and love my friend.🥰❤✌️

The sheer visceral nature of practical effects cannot be underestimated. That's why these older movies still hold up incredibly well today.
The are plenty of older movies with practical effects that don't hold up today. Look at movies like Carnosaur or Rawhead Rex, plenty of shlock from yesteryear.

I agree, using actual props will always trump cgi. 2023 and CGI dinosaurs or anything else still looks like a cartoon. The only time CGI works is when it's used as a background.
Well done practical effects hold up, but it has its limits. Well done CGI is better than stop motion, matte painting and optical compositing.
I always felt that the scene where they reprogram Robocop is a great example of what's been happening to a lot of our favorite movies and characters being changed in reboots/remakes for a "modern" audience.

The "Thank you for not smoking" clip got used in theaters back when this was new and run before the movie as a no-smoking reminder. I do recall seeing it a few times when I was a kid before movies.
RoboCain and the scene where he stalks for the mayor genuinely terrified me as a kid, I think the stop-motion animation adds to the creepiness. I had the video game and I had to look away from the loading screen every time because RoboCain’s silhouette could be seen on Robocop’s helmet.

I remember being scared of robocop's death on the nes version of robocop 2. they'd show him disembodied, similar to how he looked after cain's crew dismantles him.
I've remembered that line "Behave yourselves!" for decades...so long I actually forgot where I even heard it until a few years ago. Still pops into my head every time I see things fighting (people, animals, insects, robots, whatever)

The disembodied brain and eyes of Kain watching and processing his own body be disassembled is actually terrifying. He killed the girl not because of programming, but because he is a psychopath and she didn't come save him from the hospital. There was a scene between her and the kid explaining he would not forgive them.
I saw an old 50's Sci-Fi movie that had that, "Fiend Without a Face". I guess they got the idea from that.
I think he killed her because she didn’t give him any nuke. Remember he put he claw arm out? He was asking her for nuke and when she didn’t give it to him he killed her.
@@vytallicaq.6881 That's probably part of it, but I think there's also a direct connection to the old "brain in a jar" solipsism thought experiment, ie. "if you were just a brain in a jar being fed the illusion of external stimuli via nerve impulses, how would you know?".
I don't think that was the case with Cain, though I'm sure it was part of it. I think it was "programming", but not of the digital variety. It was an underscoring of Cain's addiction; he had a moment of personal familiarity and affection, almost instantly overwhelmed by the reality of "mission = drug".
Given that RoboCop does a lot of investigation of the conflict between humanity and the dehumanizing aspects of mass technological society, I think Cain was something of a comment on how addictions and other psychological/physiological traps can reduce a person to machinery in their own manner. There's also the role of such considerations as part of the larger dehumanization of the masses engineered by those who would profit from such obscenity.
@@michaelccozens I remember way back in Jr. High, watching an old Star Trek rerun. Kirk was talking to these advanced beings who were nothing more than brains under glass domes. The brains would flash when they talked. That was the first time I ever heard of that idea. Then "The Matrix" took that idea to an amazing new level. Who knows? Maybe we are all just experiencing an elaborate simulation of a physical world. I just wish we could alter things to work the way we want them to like Neo ultimately figured out how to do. i was always curious about the number of deaths caused by Magnavolt systems due to glitches myself . they have all this high tech but we also see in their world so many high tech things not working as planned . you gotta think there's some serious numbers of people injured by that car defense system if not killed outright.

I think when Cain killed Angie @24:40 it was maybe more a case of what she said inadvertently causing him to snap:

He knows things will never go back to how they were - echoing the situation with Murphy and his wife - plus the fact that she betrayed him along with Hawk. Unlike Murphy, though, he succumbs to rage (and probably withdrawal symptoms) and lashes out.

One of the best secuels ever! Irvin Keshvner made a great job in this and could keep the Robocop's scence pretty well. By other side Cain and Hog are both very respectful villain. And finally Robocop in the motorcicle Rocks!
Adam Savage from Mythbusters openly states he feels Cain is the greatest stop motion puppet of all time in terms of mechanical design and functional form.
The animatronic effects used when Robo was just a torso were created by Rob Bottin, who also did all of the amazing animatronics for The Thing (1982). He was a master of bizarre and twisted practical effects in the 80's and 90's.

I agree with you. And I love Peter Weller’s movements in this movie. He really had the robotic movements down. It’s a shame he never played Robocop again after this movie. Part 3 would have been better with him in it.

I saw that movie when it came out and as a kid I thought it would be cool to be like him. Now as an adult, after watching his scene with his wife again, I would rather die than become a cyborg... I mean, imagine your brain inside a metallic body where your senses are gone...

Talking about his interpretation of the character for his performance as Murphy, Peter Weller said "He was r*ped! They took EVERYTHING from him."
There was a manga and anime mini series called "A.D. Police" about a tactical police unit in the city of Mega Tokyo trained and equipted to fight renegade "Boomers" (slang term for androids). One of the stories, called "The Man Who Bites His Tongue," is about a cyborg cop.
Billy is a cop in the A.D. Police who was fatally injured in a battle against a Boomer and has been resurrected as an armored, super strong cyborg (with a visual design reminiscent of Robocop). Billy can physically outfight Boomers which allows the A.D. Police to avoid using guns and explosives to take down Boomers in densely populated urban areas.
The title "The Man Who Bites His Tongue" comes from the fact that Billys tongue is the only part of his body that still has sensation, and he often bites it so the pain will remind him that he's human. He struggles with the effects of chronic sensory deprivation, emotional isolation, and the stimulant drug he keeps getting shot up with to keep him from mentally shutting down.
I won't spoil how it turns out in case you want to check out the story. The manga was translated into English, and the anime has been uploaded on RUclips. Also, there is a plot synopsis on wikipedia. The anime is weird because it looks like they ran out of time or money to animate the story in he middle of making it. Much of the climax gets told using still pictures drawn in a style that doesn't match the design of the anime.

That committee is exactly how those types of groups are and it perfectly describes them. It's like the people live in another universe.
Very underrated sequel
Robocop has elements of social commentary in it. The part with the people saying stuff like 'Robocop needs to be nice' is a representation of the 'Mom groups' that were trying to censor everything (and still are to a degree). This can also be seen in South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut.
My own experience with these kinds of censors comes from their reaction to Power Rangers, which debuted in the US not too long after this movie did.

I saw this movie in the theater about 6 times. It was awesome. It tripled the violence, action and gore, but still had humanity in a weird way. I wish they had given Nancy Allen more to do, but I heard the director disliked her or women in general, and had her scenes trimmed.

It was I think more that Kershner didn´t like Nancy Allen. She told in interview Kershner was a "miserable human being" and he didn´t liked her and made it clear on set. Out of 15 films directed by Kershner, including Empire Strikes Back and 007 Nerv say never again, there hasn´t surfaced any other negative comment Kershner´s behaviour on women, so based on those I simply believe this was case of personal dislike. That is sad as I really like Nancy Allen as actress and Lewis as character.

It's funny. So many people say this movie was gory or gross and point to the brain removal as an example. Yes, there was some gross stuff in here, but it was Toxic Waste Man in the first movie that traumatized me so badly that even in reactions today I won't look at it. Sadly, even while looking away, the sounds are still enough to gross me out. 🤮🤮🤮
@@thejamppa Nancy Allen is a class act and a lovely soul so I tend to believe her account of Kershner's behaviour towards her. Mark Hamill apparently didn't have a great relationship with him either during Empire. Sean Connery didn't have good things to say about him also after making Never Say Never Again with him.

21:48 they did the same with Murphy, spinal cord, brain, and eyeballs. that's how he has memories, and feelings, he still has his human brain. they show in more detail of the procedure in the 2014 version of Robocop. i really like how they do the social commentary in these films, in the mock commercials they have, really well done! loved the reaction to a classic! 👍
- Not to be intentionally confrontational, but I don't think that's correct, if all there was was a brain, spine and eyes, then why would they have made him a food dispenser? You only need a food dispenser if there is a functional digestive tract. Also, in the opening scenes when he is first being augmented, one of the technicians specifically stares "We were able to save the other arm" before Dick Jones tells them, to hack it off, because OCP didn't want biological arms - now logically, if they were told to chop off his arm, it kind of obviously would imply that there will be a torso left that the arm is going to be hacked off of, so, if they are removing the arm from the torso, then the torso (and hence the digestive tract) will still be there after the arm is removed - if the torso isn't going to remain, then they wouldn't have phrased it to remove the arm, they would have probably not said anything. Just saying, the specific lines in the script don't really mesh with the idea that he had nothing left of his body other than a brain/eyes.
Also, as a side note, While watching this I was kind of wondering what purpose the eyes would have served, other than to look cool and creepy for the movie. Cain didn't seem to have any eyes on his mechanized head, no face of any kind prosthetic or otherwise, just an animation on the screen, so the eyes did not appear to even be present, and of course, since there was no face or eyes visible, one would assume that it was getting some kind of visual input through sensors, and so, kind of doesn't make sense that they showed that they kept the eyes. So yeah my theory is it was just because it looked cool, having the eyes hanging off the brain in the jar like that, lol.

@@Lugnut73 - I haven't personally seen the remake, I generally for the most part tend to like the original of a movie much more than the remakes so have kind of mostly stopped watching remakes, with a little bit of an "Why-Can't-They-Come-Up-With-Their-Own-Ideas" attitude now about movies, in the last few years seemed like there was a flood of remakes all over the place. To give you an idea, I am an absolute mega fan of the Star Trek Universe, so when they came out with the new ones, starting with everyone young and brand new fresh out of the academy, I was very resistant, and originally wasn't going to watch it, but I eventually got around to it, and was pleasantly and shockingly surprised at how good they are, Christopher Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldano, Karl Urban, John Cho they ALL played their roles so well, and everything kept so true to the original style, one of the only remakes I have seen that was as good as the originals, and honoring Leonard Nimoy with his part in these movies, total respect, love them a lot. It is a shame we lost Mr. Anton Yelchin, he was quite frankly amazing as Chekov. So, yeah most of the time I don't tend to watch remakes much, sometimes it can spoil the memories of a great movie a bit when they make a new cash-cow copy and it has none of the original movies magnetism.

But it looked like Cain had had two faces, one with eyes behind the knight-like helmet head which he can turn around to present a screen as a second face to show his virtual face to Angie on it . But unlike Murphy his real face was not preserved, because Cain was one of the most wanted criminals of Detroit and people would never believe him to be a trustworthy police officer now. So, OCP had to keep secret the identity of Robocop 2 (= Cain) to the public. After Cain's second death however OCP wll tell the public who he was, but that it was solely the idea of evil Dr. Fax to choose a criminal's brain without telling the company and finally make her alone responsible for the massacre committed by Cain.
First movie is a masterpiece, love it. RoboCop 2 is a bizzare, strange and eclectic experience. Still can't decide it's a good movie or a bad one. I guess that's why I like it.
I honestly think the stop motion adds to the mechanical nature of what Cain became.

I'm with you about the first one being better. The character interactions were a little more developed, and therefore more satisfying, and that's what matters most in a movie. But this one had some WILD ideas that were really well illustrated by all of the amazing effects, so it was definitely fun to watch!
I always like the blue armor in this one, even the black parts shine up and the chin guard covers the whole chin too. This was Irvin Kershners last movie to direct too. Yeah the score isn't the same since it's by another composer but I still like it. I know the 3rd movie will not be here or anyone else since pretty much everyone hates it, but I for one like the 3rd movie and don't care what anyone says about it. I am glad to see you watching this movie and got it out of the way too while I'm still waiting for others to watch this but still waiting. Another note is most of the arcade games you see there are done by an old game company call Data East and they did Robocop 1 and 2 arcade games too.

actually his first suit had more grey/silver , in the sequel he had more blue/purple tone to his suit. not exactly a hold over both suti were givien an automotive finish but they were different. it was most certainlya different suit altogether.

Interesting you mentioned Starship Troopers. The guy who directed that, also directed the first RoboCop. Another fun fact, the guy who directed RoboCop 2, also directed Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back. It explains why the animatronics and stop motion animation is so good too.

All the prominent arcade machines in the Duffy scene are from Data East, the company that put out the Robocop game. I believe Duffy is introduced to a Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja cab.
The way I always looked at the scene where Cain killed Angie was because she insulted/upset him, not that his programming took over. Right after she says "it'll take some getting used to" he flies into a rage and kills her. Seemed to me like for a moment he forgot what had been done to him and then he was reminded by what she said.
Lauren, so enjoyed your reaction and comments on this. Not sure how you'll feel about Robocop 3. After the satire of the first and the craziness of the second, they tone it down a lot for 3, with a PG rating. Peter Weller also opted out, but his replacement Robert John Burke does a pretty good job. It's a fairly routine adventure, and has a few TV actors that went on to bigger things.
Burke does fine with what he's given (and since the perfect Weller is gone) but yeah it feels so much like a made for TV thing closer to the TV series than the first two films.
Fun fact: Peter Weller was once a mime in real life prior to becoming a guilded screen actor if you dnk. May be why he's known for having such good talent in the robotic movements necessary to pull off the cyborg thing

hey, i watched along on patreon...first time i saw this since i was a kid!!! i gotta admit, the editing was somewhat choppy with this movie. this movie still works though. Robocop 3 though...i think is better left in the vault. quite the nostalgia trip so thanks for that. i played NES game for hours on end in the 90's. this movie had a hand in shaping my childhood. thanks for reacting to this!!!
Frank Miller (Sin City, 300, The Spirit, Daredevil) wrote the screenplay for Robocop 2. Which is why the Robocop fight at the end is basically a superhero fight. Frank Miller also has a small cameo as Frank the Chemist.

RoboCop 2 usually gets quite a bit of hate but I've always loved both of them love the neca Robocop in the background in that tar man from Return the Living Dead and the Terminator head I got the same one and I think I see a little Christine down there I was like 5 years old when RoboCop 2 came out
When Rob Bottin (who also did The Thing) delivered the Robocop torso and animatronic head on set, the director and producers were so impressed that they added the scene between it and Dr. Faxx to showcase it.
If you love stop-motion, you should watch the 1933 King Kong. It's the father of stop-motion (not the first, but certainly the most influential). It inspired generations of stop-motion animators. Most notable Ray Harryhausen. Harryhausen is the only special effects artist to be an individual film genre. Harryhausen studied under Willis O'Brien, who did the effects for King Kong and the original Mighty Joe Young (and the underrated Black Scorpion). My favorite Harryhausen films are Jason and the Argonauts, The Valley of Gwangi (kinda of a remake of King Kong that substitutes a T Rex for Kong), and The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
Another great stop-motion film is Dragonslayer. Phil Tippett, who worked on the Robocop films, handled the animation. It features my absolute favorite movie dragon.
Abandoned factories are about the easiest locations to secure other than woods. They shot scenes for the Avengers, where Black Widow is held hostage, in an abandoned factory right by my house in Cleveland. Local artists use the same place she was tied up constantly and it is usually graffitied with "Scarlet sat here" on the ground at that spot near the edge.

The "River Rouge sludge plant" definitely has that abandoned Detroit industrial-decay thing going for it like the steel mill from _RoboCop_ did.
A lot of people knock the remake but honestly I'd recommend it. It has it's charms, his testing against the robots and reintroduction at home is definitely a bit of fun and the action is very clean. It's not as campy as the original but it definitely has its moments. A slightly different, um-- bucket of bolts?
I'm so happy you enjoyed this movie. It gets constantly criticized by the RoboCop community, but I have always thought it was a solid sequel. The action in this movie is so much fun.
Now, watch RoboCop 3 at your own risk. Lewis is the only reason to watch it.
As an adult the first movie resonates harder with the more biting satire and tighter storytelling but the dope stop motion action scenes of the sequel made it my favourite when I was a kid (and probably shouldnt have been watching either but hey ho).

Robocop 2 came out a year before I was born and I still grew up watching it.
Whats funny is that the sounds of the ED209 from RC part 1...like when he's searching for the stairs....well Disney reused that sound in the last episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" when at the end of episode there are those shielded battle droids...yeah those droids use the sound

Lauren I think the paint job on Robocop that gave that purple to blue tints is a type of paint called Pearlescent Paint, you will see pictures of sports cars that often use this to show off the cars curves :). Enjoyed your reaction including the gory Cain brain smush at the end lol.
I remember that paint was used in at least one ep of Pimp My Ride lol.

Kurtwood Smith (Clarence) said that, because Peter Weller is such a dedicated method actor, he wanted everyone to address him as Robocop or Murphy when he was in costume, so Smith went out of his way to always call him Peter instead.

Another underappreciated Peter Weller movie to check out, The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension . Peter plays buckaroo banzai, a physicist, neurosurgeon, test pilot, and rock star who has to save the world, along with his trusted allies, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, from a battle to the death between evil red aliens and good black aliens from Planet 10. It is filled with 80's schlock, and it is ridiculous and over the top and is great because of it.
If I remember correctly, Starship Troopers 2 and 3 had more of the commercials than part 1. Both series from the same director Paul Verhoeven.
