In the book, Dizzie's sex was not explicitly stated but presumably male. Turning "him" into a female (and casting the incredibly hot Dina Meyer) was, in my opinion, one of the best things about the movie. But I would like to point out that in the book, Dizzie died early, but "on the way up", just as he/she did in the movie.

This is why the actively push people to quit...
You need resolve and strong morals to pull through.
They dont want weak, narcissistic, greed people in control.

I was a teenager when I first saw this, so I didn't quite get the idea that it was designed to be a fictional propaganda movie. But man... it's so wild watching it again once you understand what the writer/director was going for.
-It's a society that embraces war so much that the only way to become a citizen is to *join the army*.
-They say the bugs sent meteors towards Earth as an attack but we never really *see* them doing it. It's entirely possible this was just an excuse for us to go and invade their home planet.
-Rico would have died alongside his parents if he didn't join the Mobile Infantry.
All that time, I just thought it was a cheesy sci-fi movie. But these little details help paint a much more complex picture.

    • @JOBXR
      @JOBXR Год назад +3

I have a gripe with the way Paul made this movie even though I like it quite a lot and I think you may be falling into some of the same things. Paul never read the book when he made the movie. And the society doesn’t embrace war that it’s the only wat to become a citizen it’s just a guaranteed path to citizenship. There are other ways the society pushes you to earn your self that right via service. Also it’s never mentioned or even hinted that the humans did that it’s only a theory people made because it appealed to their notions of the films propaganda style on the military. It is no where to be found in the film it is only explained in the books with the bugs using wormhole type openings in space to launch the meteors. And yeah Rico would probably have died if he stayed there but that’s a consequence of location not necessarily a veiled metaphor for the benefit of the military.

As a career US Army infantryman, thank you for the shout-out. Everyone (including my EOD stepfather) thought I was crazy to actually volunteer for infantry, but there is no better branch. Every branch in the army and marines has a mission statement, but it is only the infantry whose mission statement DOES NOT contain the word “support” in it. The mission of everyone else in the services is to support us. Our sole mission is to “Close with and destroy the enemy by means of fire and maneuver.” And just like in the movie, infantry is what made me the man I am today - including the bad back, blown out hips from too many hard parachute landings, compressed spine from carrying too much weight for too long, dislike of fireworks displays, and the poor social skills. 🙄

This film really brought the action, practical effects, gross moments, shocking moments, comedy, satire, and emotion. I just found out that Starship Troopers was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, which is well deserved. Paul Verhoeven is a great filmmaker. It sucked seeing Johnny's teacher die because he did seem like a cool dude like you said. I'm used to Michael Ironside playing villains so it was cool getting to see him in a different role. I was expecting Dizz to die, but it still shocked me when she did. It's also wild seeing Hank from Breaking Bad, and Father Gabriel from The Walking Dead in this lol

Laurenn, did you get the narrative of this story too? The Terran federation are not exactly the good guys in this story. Their society is run by the army, and only people who served get to vote. The contract serving is for 2 years, but can be extended indefinitely if leadership decides to do so. They never consider negotiating, or even a dialoge for that matter. Humans enterred Arachnid territory by colonizing first, and they responded with that meteorite. I get soldiers fighting for the men next to them. But this movie is all about the dangers of a society that attacks all it's percreived problems with war.
Paul Verhoeven grew up under N@zi occupation and this film is a warning for the world not to fall for fascist ideals, as they can be very persuasive. That's why he chose this very attractive cast, as they all end up as poster boys and girls for the war effort. And the flashy N@zi style uniforms.

The Hugo award winning novel of the same title was written in the '50s when the military draft was very real in the U.S. As a thought experiment it proposed ending the draft, but making federal service a condition for voting, thus linking rights and responsibilities.

    • @flatebo1
      @flatebo1 Год назад +1

Arver v. United States (1918) ruled that the US government has the power to compel the citizen to military service. Military service doesn't grant citizenship. Citizenship grants to government the power to compel military service. But this only applies to men. Up until 2019 only men could be compelled to register for the draft. In National Coalition for Men v. Selective Service System SCOTUS ruled that the male-only draft had become unconstitutional since women were, finally, allowed to serve in combat. Unliike men, women cannot be compelled to serve in combat, they are just allowed to if they so choose. Previously women were not allowed to serve in combat roles. But SCTOUS did not require the dissolution of Selective Service. Rather, they noted that Congress was considering revising Selective Service to include women, so they deferred making any final determination on the constitutionality of the draft until new legislation was in place. Which hasn't happened yet.
So, at the moment, for men the right to vote is dependant upon making oneself available for military service by registering for the draft. Failure to register can result in loss of citizenship. And, at the moment, women are not required to register for the draft. So for women voting rights are not conditional upon making themselves available for military service. It's sort of the exact opposite of Heinlein's Federation.

You could be whipped for minor infractions, and for more serious crimes and possibly execution, was a thing called "keel hauling." The sailor was tied to a line looped beneath the vessel, thrown overboard on one side of the ship, and dragged under the ship's keel. Only the Dutch Navy practiced that punishment though.

The movie really captures the camaraderie of soldiers in combat, the friendships and sacrifices that are asked of them. Of course the movie really does satire the fascist side of the military and the dark side of propaganda but the reality of the individual soldier's experience is captured in a true to life way. I suggest watching "The Politics Of Starship Troopers" documentary here on RUclips. I'd link it, but RUclips sometimes deletes comments with links in them. It is a very enlightening video, as it clears up many misconceptions about the movie and book.
Fun Fact: A miniature Millennium Falcon can be seen on the backside of one of the starships' bridges.
How I Killed Your Father Fact: During the live-fire training scene, Djana'D (Tami-Adrian George) shoots and kills Breckinridge (Eric Bruskotter) accidentally, resulting in Rico's flogging. In real life, the two actors are together and have a child. They met on this film.
No CGI Needed Fact: When Rico, Carmen, and Carl meet with the recruiting officer after pledging, and the officer shakes his prosthetic hand with Rico, the recruiting officer has no legs. Robert David Hall, who plays the recruiting officer, had both legs amputated after a car crash in 1978. Three years later, Hall appeared in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000) as the medical examiner Dr. Al Robbins, wearing prosthetic legs using a crutch, and walking with a limp.

The only thing that annoys me about this film is the way people tend to miss the entire point for which it was made. I love this movie, and I think the way it was done was brilliant. Ironically, there are just too many things that should be seen as over-the-top examples of fascist behavior, but which barely raise an eyebrow these days. So, in the end this film has become an amazing commentary, not on a fictional future society, but instead a commentary on our own.

The glory of Starship Troopers reactions are the comments that praise the satire, how that satire went over Hollywood's head, how a lot of people hate the satire and love the book because the book is over their head, and watching various people defend or tear-down Heinlein's vision.

A certified classic. While this film struggled at the time in the US upon cinema release, it did very well in most foreign countries. It’s not so much a dig at current US military, but more a huge dig at authoritarian systems and how they grind the meat of youth into the hamburger of tyranny.

We cannot know what has occured before the bugs attacked. Why the fuck would the humans even try to terraform, what seems to be a barren desert planet? And do not bring up any books, or sequels, because we are talking about this movie.

When I went to Basic Training for the Army, I was in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I'm from South Eastern Kentucky. I went all that way only to get a drill sgt. who was from my home town and knew my mom and dad personally. I was blown away, lol. He knew how to motivate me, he wouldn't yell at me, he'd say stuff like, "What do you think your dad would say if he saw you fall down." Or something like, "your mom will be disappointed if you give up right now" He knew just what to say to push me on. He KNEW my folks and he made sure I became a soldier to make them proud. Life is funny that way. I thought about it and wanted to share the story. I became honor graduate at the end of boot camp because he pushed me so hard and I was already in excellent shape from sports in high school before going to the military. Rico seeing his teacher was leader of his new unit and being shocked was exactly what I felt when my Drill Sgt. said, "How are Marshall and Karen, private?" He said, "your dad and I had a long talk on the phone a few minutes ago and he said you can't come home til you pass everything. So get ready for hell private, you'll thank me for it. He had known my parents and even held me as a baby when I was 2 years old, LOL. Talk about crazy.

Please understand that this movie is a parody.
If you read the book, watching the movie will leave you in stitches.
It's a wonderful book with a great take on society, and a thoroughly entertaining movie with a sardonic commentary with self-aware humor presented in the vein of Robocop.
The director stated in an interview that he barely read the book, breezing over key points in favor of his own thematic message.
The book and the movie are VASTLY different, but it didn't stop the Heinlein estate from allowing other works from being made into film adaptations.
"The Puppet Masters" has that unfortunate distinction.
...So when we realize that we will never have a cinematic version of "Stranger In A Strange Land," we don't have this take of Starship Troopers to blame.
I LOVE this movie, and the changes in the plot and characters and all the little details like Dizzy and Rico getting it on before mobilizing are a riot!
(Dizzy was a guy in the book, and he and Rico never had sex.)
It's truly beautiful to think about the changes the director made to give the film less commentary and more humor and action...
I think it is comedy gold and comparing the flick to the book is much like if you compare Kubrik's comedy, "Dr. Strangelove" to the movie "Failsafe."
Would you like to know more?
I believe this movie is one of the greatest parodies ever made. The acting is top-notch, the campy scenes are hysterical and many, many of the lines and scenes are funny and meme-worthy.
    Chick, you crack me up!
    I LOVE your reactions!
Minus The Bear's album Highly Refined Pirates uses quotes from this movie in their songs and it is obvious the band shares the deep appreciation that I do for this timeless comedy.
    *** side story ***
When my friend and I lived on boats in Hawaii, we were plagued with cockroaches on each of our respective boats. Using a bug bomb in the cramped, enclosed space of a boat not only did little to help the problem, but made comfortable life inside the hull intolerable for days. Finally, I hooked up with a local and acquired four geckos caught in the wild. I turned them loose on my boat and never saw a cockroach again. My bro caught a few to set free inside his boat and when he was free of the crawling scourge, he said to me, "You kill bugs good, Rico." We have been fondly saying that to one another ever since. It's been over a decade, and we live in different states, but whenever one of us impresses the other and summons endearment we say that line.
*** end of side story ***
Again, I think the movie is dark comedy gold and is funny as hell to watch wasted and is one of my favorites from the last century.
It is unfortunate that the sequels didn't appreciate the director's tongue-in-cheek, subtle humor and went the route of only re-emphasizing the original film's horror, action and gore.
Still, I love watching you get into the story and react as only you do.
    You kill bugs good, Rico!
    Best to you-

Best edit by far of this film I've seen for RUclips. I've loved this film since I first saw the opening 45 minutes in a theatre at 10 years old before my mother dragged me and my Soccer buddy out when the nude shower scene at training camp Arthur began (one scene you didn't include any of in your RUclips edit for obvious and commendable reasons). "Nope that's it we're leaving".....

Hey Lauren, This movie is intentionally campy, awesomely gory, and definitely a satire. The VFX still holds up surprisingly well. It's pretty cool how it shows that we are not that far away from diving into an authoritarian ideology. I think that's what Johnny's parents were arguing for him not to join the service and his teacher told Johnny that the choice was his and that is the most powerful thing of all. But then the attack happens there is a definitive reason to join and Anytime we are faced with an existential threat or immediate response are to suspend our rights to ensure victory at all cost. Once you give up your rights, it's pretty hard to get them back. Since "Service guarantees citizenship." I'm sure you never thought such depth would be found in an over-the-top cheesy gore fest action flick.

    • @josephwallace202

I don't know that the movie shows that we are "close to diving into a fascist ideology", simply because there is no evidence of any mass political movement in the Federation (or our world either frankly) but it does offer an example of how an authoritarian society of the future might arrange itself. Note how racism doesn't appear to exist in their world, and a black CO is even the one whipping Rico for his "administrative punishment"; what I really appreciate about small details like this is that they acknowledge that authoritarian formations of the future won't be able to repeat variations of what happened in the past, which parallels how many German radicals in the 20s and 30s were preoccupied by the possibility of a Bonapartist putsch by Von Papen for which the conditions did not exist, and consequently ended up being blindsided by the then-new reactionary formation of fascism.

    • @billmaster1157

That would be true if Verhoeven actually represented fascism in this film. The motto "Service guarantees citizenship" contradicts the fundamental principle of fascism; All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state. The simple fact that there is an institution separating citizens from the civilians contadicts this basic principle. For those that don't understand, this is a state funded institution designed to separate the state from private individuals and to protect that institution as sacred. A correct motto for fascism would be "citizenship guarantees service."
The laws of the federation are mildly authoritarian at best and there's no compulsion to serve the state. In fact throughout the film service is actively discouraged and people are constantly pushing you to not do so. Agents of the state are actively pushing people away from service to itself. That's not very authoritarian.
This drive to serve is not out of a sense duty to serve the state, but out of a sense of responsibility to protect humanity; there's no ruling dictator working to manipulate the masses, no media censorship to never show human weakness or failure. This isn't a fascist film. In fact it's presenting a very Liberal interpretation of the future, one that emphasises self sacrifice above all else as opposed to the real world that emphasises self indulgence above all else.
From an objective perspective, all you see is a united people with common values that are shared widely among most of the population, who are even more united when the Arachnids begin their attack on humanity (remember, the bugs shot first) the Mormon extremists that settled a colony on a bug planet were not sent by or representatives of the state. This violent reaction from a species proven to have intelligence shows that the hive mind does not imbue any human being with any moral value and makes no distinction between a civilian and a citizen; the state or the private individual.

@@billmaster1157 Fascism is the melding of state and corporate power. Usually, you only see the state part, but the corporations are always deeply embedded. That "service guarantees citizenship" is only a fig leave. In Fascism, nobody has power, citizen or not. Only the state officials and the corporations have power.
