There are a few reasons why adult actors and actresses are generally used in high school settings
    1. Between casting and filming the movie -- not counting post-production activity, it takes about a year. Puberty is magic. But it also means that over that year of filming, a teenager is going to age in a more significantly obvious way than an adult in their 20s.
    2. Labor laws. It's illegal to require child and teenage actors from working the same hours as their adult counterparts.
So, it's just easier to get a bunch of adults to play younger people.

    • @ptthatswhatshesaid

Not only do teens look less serious in war movies (although in reality soldiers really are that young) I think they obviously wanted to do some nude scenes so.. adults it was.
Plus the movie clearly wanted to show them rising through the ranks over time. so that by the end they're the adult with new recruits (who are casted unusually young for contrast)

    • @WarlordShogun
      @WarlordShogun 7 месяцев назад +1

One of the scouts for this movie came to my high school back when it was being planned and they made a point to visit the senior classes and get photos of a good selection of students who were 18 or older to use as reference material. Rspecially any who were going into the military or were in sports. So they did try to get them as close to looking like teenagers as possible.

    • @CordovanSplotchVT

Actually the second point is not valid. You can watch the podcast of Alyson Stoner about the child actors life in Hollywood. They easily avoid labor law. Starting with filming in given states or counties even where it’s not effective. And we can go on what she mentioned in that podcast how they treated children.

We do. It was explained in the propaganda reels.
    1. Mormon colonists went to an empty planet in the exclusion zone, against the warnings of the federation.
    2. The bugs sent to that planet and slaughtered all of the unarmed colonists without warning or mercy.
    3. Rico joins the military.
    4. The bugs sent the meteor that wiped out Buenes Aires killing 8 million people.

A meteor traveling from Klendathu without the aid of special technology would take thousands of years to reach Earth. For all intents, and purposes, ST is a book about gatekeeping the franchise (literally) - the core idea is that authority, and responsibility must be equal, and that the cost to acquire something is part of its value - that's why the right to vote is restricted to those who understand its value, and accept the responsibility - because allowing people who believe they can get something for free just by voting for it to vote irresponsibly leads to disaster.
Incidentally - including elements from the book in the movie is what completely undermined Verhoven's attempt at making a satire of fascism - because the UCF in the film isn't the least bit fascist - they just restrict the right to vote, but it's still a democracy, where constitutional liberties are sacrosanct.

    • @CordovanSplotchVT
      @CordovanSplotchVT 7 месяцев назад +2

@@ptthatswhatshesaid It's a bit worse than just superficial.
The book is the authors depiction of his idea of the perfect libertarian world.
Limiting the right to vote and holding public office only to those who willingly served the federation is meant to be a filter to get rid of self-serving people in politics by simply not being worth the trouble when you have every other right without having to serve anyone.
Verhoeven is a socialist and is very much fundamentally opposed to libertarianism so he chose to depict the federation as fascistic, that's why he added having children as something you had to serve to earn, sprinkled in the parody propaganda clips and gave Carl the snazzy SS looking uniform.
But as a socialist, his ability to depict actual fascism is limited by the fact that fascism is just Socialism with some minor tweaks to make it work a bit more effectively, so he wasn't all that successful at making the federation fascist rather than simply militaristic.
Under fascism the Klendathu fiasco would never have resulted in the Sky Marshall admitting fault, taking responsibility and stepping down while broadcasting it on their own propaganda network, because the state is infallible and all powerful. The fiasco would have been blamed on some random fall guy.
In the book, military service is not the only way to serve the federation, because everyone must be allowed to earn their franchise if they want to, no matter their physical ability/disability.
If you ask to serve, they WILL find something you can do.
There's a lot of other minor differences too, like Dizzy being a guy, Ace Levy being two people, Ricos dad surviving by not being there when the meteor strikes and ending up serving under his son in the Roughnecks to avenge his wife and rediscover his masculinity.
All in all the movie is an attempted smear-piece against the author of the book, but it wasn't done very well, so it ended up coming across as just a really cool sci-fi action film with some confused political points.
The throwaway line in the beginning of the movie about the social sciences having brought ruin to society before the military veterans established the federation IS in the book and is fleshed out a lot more and actually feels very accurate to today's society.

"Starship Troopers is an American military science fiction media franchise based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein and the satirical 1997 film adaptation by screenwriter Edward Neumeier and director Paul Verhoeven."
Quote straight out of Wikipedia. The movie bears almost no relationship at all to the book except for the names of some characters and the title. There are no women troopers and the few women in the naval ratings are rarely seen. The military actually behaves like a military organization and not a dumb horde. There is no love story. The humans have other alien partners and allies against the "bugs" and other combatant races. Ricos father isn't killed but rather shows up later as another enlistee. That and so many other differences make one of the best arguments for reading the book I can think of. Once you understand what Robert Heinlein was actually writing about You will also understand why this is such a satire.

It would be a hard rule where some people get to and others do not, and there is nothing anybody can do to change their lot.

There is an interesting story about how this film was made. According to interviews he did, Paul Verhoeven only read a few pages of the original book, believed it was very fascist and then tried to make this an anti-fascist film. The curious thing is, there is arguably no fascism depicted here. Instead the film depicts heroic characters in an existential fight to save humanity and we have no trouble rooting for them all the way.
Clearly, there is plenty of superficial indicators of fascism; the militarism, the ridiculously attractive characters, the two-tier society, the actual nazi uniforms(!) and so on. However, this society is also extremely racially diverse with complete equality between women and men, freedom to choose your education and profession, liberal dating standards, etc. The status of Citizen is earned through meritocratic means, not through racial or class differences. So, given that Verhoeven evidently had no real clue about fascism, the fact that this movie turned out as good as it did is a miracle. But it is certainly his brand of good action with dark humor and in my opinion it's a modern classic.

I have always had mixed feelings about this movie. The effects, action, and cinematography are phenomenal. The swarming of the bugs is probably the most terrifying scene of any film I have ever watched. However, the film has a weirdly mixed tone, I think. My late father, who also liked it for the most part, attributed this to the recruiting-film framing device. Or it may in part be because it has certain soap-opera qualities in the treatment of the characters.
The source material, Heinlein’s book of the same title, won a Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1959. I thought it was outstanding when I read it in the late ’60s, but when I reread it after “Ender’s Game” was published, I felt that it was a very uneven novel
You might consider reacting to the “Ender’s Game” movie. The book’s author (Orson Scott Card) intended it in part as an homage to Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers,” but its take on the subject and thematic focus are quite different.

There is no nepotism, no corruption, public officials (along with everybody else) are held accountable for their actions, and nobody is forced to do anything.
Also, this is a movie about a war, so of course the movie focuses on the military. But that doesn't mean the entire society is militaristic. The fact that joining the military is 100% voluntary and people can quit at any time, is proof enough of that.

Wow, a deer at 7yo. I got a 410 shotgun for my 7th birthday and got my first squirell (my favorite food). I also remember buying my own shotgun shells (no age requirement) and they were at the checkout of an auto parts store, much like candy bars these days.

Carl made it look easy to kill the bug because the bug was in a cage and unable to move much or attack. Carl was in no danger and could remain calm.
Out on the battlefield, the bugs are far more mobile and able to attack back. Stress is high and hitting a tiny nerve cluster on a very fast moving target is much easier said than done.
Also, while it was a propaganda reel, literally all of the propaganda reels in the movie show 100% factual information.

Normally I agree with the weirdness of believing that 30+ year olds are 18, but I think it kind of fits in this world.
Consider that they have very advanced biotech (like the healing pods) and are super militaristic, I don't think it's unrealistic to think that people have been engineered to physically age more quickly. It would also likely result in more brain development prior to adulthood, allowing them to be indoctrinated more quickly while also having fully developed brains (normally happening in the mid 20s).
I don't believe that was considered in any way for casting, but I think it justifies suspending disbelief for this one.

As soon as you start saying someone has to earn the right to vote - whether through military service or anything else - you're setting up a society with self-perpetuating divisions, where groups will work to ensure that other groups don't or can't earn that right. It's a terrible idea no matter which way you cut it

This movie is such a good test to see if someone has a mind vulnerable to propaganda and authoritarianism.

"Spiders that weren't spiders"? They were called Arachnids. What do you think that means? How can you feel sorry for the Brain Bug that was sucking out brains to get intelligence and giving the orders for the other bugs to attack and kill humans? Didn't you get that the Brain Bug was in control of all the others?
