    I don't care what anyone says; this film holds up to this day. The suits and puppetry were nearly perfect, the lighting, cinematography and score were all great, and the writing was outstanding. It told a good cohesive story, was paced well, perfectly blended the dark/serious elements with comedy, had jokes for the kids AND jokes for adults. I still crack up thinking about the scene where Donatello tells Casey he's claustrophobic, and Casey gets pissed off saying "I've never even LOOKED at another guy!" 😂

      @extantsanity 10 месяцев назад +11

      It absolutely holds up -- it was just ahead of its time and a lot of people (esp. the studio) didn't know what to make of it, which is why there was so much more studio interference with the sequels. But since then, we've seen many superhero franchises take off by going *_more_* comic-accurate (e.g. MCU) versus *_less_* comic-accurate (e.g. X-Men with their standardized and generic leather outfits). And we've seen them do well by going darker/mature (e.g. The Dark Knight trilogy and Juaquin Phoenix's Joker) versus using kid gloves (e.g. "Fantastic Four" (2004)).
      On the other hand, if this movie had been made more recently, we wouldn't have had the talent and expertise of Jim Henson (RIP). A perfect movie in an imperfect time.

      A fusion between the two is always great, if they did it someday 'Where the Wild Things Are' style with the mouths and eyes being CGI, remove some of the 'suit' look from the body in areas it would be perfect. Still one of the best of Jim Hensons work, but no need to fear the new and old... just a pitty he died before the real take off of CGI since he was starting to use it around that time, what he could have done with it would have been amazing since he'd have definitely tried to fuse the two, practical and CGI and would probably have advanced it in some interesting directions it didnt end up taking until much much latter. @@emtadamd9488

    2:17 - Raph accidentally left his sai behind, which April temporarily steals, hence his next line.
    No wonder he was pissed right then and there... (But eventually reclaims it in the subway)

    The suits have a person in them, but with animatronic heads. They were made by Jim Henson's shop, and they really did a good job all the way around. The fact that they can do these moves at all is a testament to how much thought and work Henson and Associates put into it is nothing short of amazing.

    Fun fact: The cartoon was called Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles in the UK over concerns that “ninja” had connotations of violence that were harmful to children.
    Michelangelo’s nunchaku were also absent in many episodes as these were specifically banned from being shown. Even the word “bummer” was removed.
    Thankfully the UK censors aren’t as sensitive these days but that sucked for sure.

    • @Tylerius87
      @Tylerius87 10 месяцев назад +2

      i had thought it was the japanese version that did all that because in japan at the time ninja basically ONLY meant something like a criminal assassin/bandit. i guess it makes sense that europe would also use that version due to the harsher rules about depictions of violence and certain weapons ect. in america we tend to be way more lax about violence in childrens media and way more harsh about any kind of sexuality. American cartoon producers when told they cant depict mutant assasins using swords to dismember sewer hobos in a childrens cartoon: "make them ROBOT sewer hobos, problem solved *wink* XD

    • @BubblyRainbows
      @BubblyRainbows 10 месяцев назад

      SPOILERS FOR "TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2":
      I was told that a lot of American parents complained so much about the violence in the first movie that in the second movie, most of the turtles never used their weapons against people. They used sausages, and random objects, but most of them never swing a weapon at a person because they were trying to tone down the violence to appease parents.

    • @Tylerius87
      @Tylerius87 10 месяцев назад

      @@BubblyRainbows that makes sense that parents would be the ones responsible for ruining something great rather than having to actually be parents. (im sure it was the thing to blame at the time if a kid did something bad and the parent wanted to blame something for it, much like rock and roll and video games) i had always assumed that the first film wasnt expected to be such a popular potential $ maker and so the writer/director had more creative control, then each movie after that had more and more investors and mettlers, like the toys r us lobby gaining more and more power and influence in the process and making everything look more like toys, vanilla ices manager insisting on dance party music video getting crammed into a fight etc (i like tmnt 2 but the quality and depth is very diminished compared to the first one, and the 3rd one is so bad its unrecognizable.)

    I was just at the right age when Ninja Turtles hit in the late 80s. It was a pure phenomenon at the time. I was ate up with it, I remember my Mom taking me to see this in theaters. There was toys, comics, shows, movies, video games, school supplies, lunchboxes, clothes, food, and just about anything else they could slap Ninja Turtles on. I even had Turtles sheets on my bed at one point. It was huge at the time. I still remember those hostess pies they had, filled with vanilla pudding and covered in a green sugar coating. It's a wonder they haven't brought those back. What's crazy is the original Ninja Turtles comic, where it all began, was a harder and grittier book to begin with. They got toned way down for the franchise we all know today. Even then, they were still outlawed in some countries because Michelangelo used nunchuks, a weapon banned in many parts of the world. In the 2nd movie they got toned down again, being discouraged from them using their weapons. And the cartoon they ended up giving Mikey a grappling hook/rope to use instead of his nunchuks. I'd say this movie is one of the only things that's aged well from the franchise. And the games after part 1. For me, the concept is too silly for me to keep up with it and enjoy it as an adult. But I'll still play the beat em up games. This movie definitely holds a lot of nostalgia for me.

    Interesting backstory for this movie, originally it was intended to be closer to the cartoon with a more teen movie style direction. However when director Steve Barron signed on, he insisted on making it as close to the more adult oriented comics as possible with a more serious story and darker visuals. He also convinced Jim Henson to sign on to do the effects which he would've otherwise refused to do.
    It went over so well that when TMNT creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird adapted the story in a comic, they gave special thanks to Steven Barron for honoring their original vision.

    • @RyGuy42089
      @RyGuy42089 9 месяцев назад +1

      And it pissed parents off so much, which is why the second movie was toned down so much. Parents also didn't like the use of the weapons in this movie, hence why the turtles don't even use their weapons in the second film.

    My cousin and I saw this as kids together in theaters when it came out. When we left we were literally looking down the sewers to maybe see them on a rainy night. Then went together to see it again for the special 30 year anniversary release in 2020. It was a nostalgia overdose in the best way..."Pizza dudes got 30 seconds!"
    🍕🐢🐢🐢🐢
    Fun Facts: The VHS had a Pizza Hut Little League baseball commercial in the beginning but somehow Dominos got the best product placement ever. The delivery guy is actually one of the turtles out of costume. And so is the guy in the back of the cab when Raph rolls over it. Also notice Michelangelo is the one shown on the roof yelling for Splinter with Raph's voice, and the only one whose drawing is not shown.

    For the suits two versions were built. One for the dialogues. The were about 15 Kilogram for the suits themselves plus around additonal 10 Kilo for the head animatronics. Partly built into the backside of the shells.
    For the combat scenes, they used different suits where the animatronics were removed. Which means only 15 Kilogram. But still heavy. Imagine doing martial arts with extra 15kg weight around your whole body.
    Still. The suits from the Jim Henson Group are top notch. My childhood dream was to own one. Still is.

    The good thing about this movie, besides the obvious, is that every time you watch it you see or notice something new... it can appear 'shallow popcorn' initially but its got a huge number of layers to it, and there are threads, themes and nuances to it that can be missed at first (and alot of people do)... even today after seeing it numerous times over the last 30 years I still see something or hear something I hadnt noticed.
    One of my favorites as a kid and adult, that i always watch, every time... no questions asked. Was in primary school when the cartoon hit the world (there was a build up to its release in my country and us kids were almost manic in anticipation) and it was a true phenomena, something that hadnt really happened before (it was like a Cartoon version of the Beetles craze lol)... blew up huge and blew up fast.
    Its also one of the perfect father & sons movies... and it doesnt hurt its got Judith Hoag in it (to quote Michelangelo 'Shes a baaabe').

    I was too old to get invested in Turtle mania back then, but as a collector I know the origin of the comic.
    in the late 70s the Uncanny X-Men was a monster hit, to the point were just about every new superhero was some sort of mutant for a while. Since the mutation usually manifested during puberty, most were teenagers.
    Then we have Frank Miller's Daredevil. He's the one who introduced martial arts to mainstream comics, including Elektra. His work was also marvelously popular. He introduced an evil ninja group called The Hand, and Daredevil's sensei turned out to be a blind warrior called Stick. See where this is going yet?
    So when they decided to to a spoof of popular comics, they had teenaged, ninja, mutant ... turtles... Because why not?
    P.S. Looking forward to more Dirty Harry & live action Spider-Man.

    I love the nunchuck showdown between Mikey and that Foot Ninja. But the scene that will always hit me in the heart is when the Turtles are sitting around a campfire and they get a spectral message from Master Splinter.
    Fun fact about Master Splinter: He was puppeteered and voiced by the same man who originated Elmo on Sesame Street, Kevin Clash.

  • @TheCastellan
    @TheCastellan 3 месяца назад

    The pizza delivery guy, and the nunchuck ninja were 2 of the actors that were in the turtle costumes.
    Also, the actors in the turtle costumes and the footclan ninjas, due to the weight of the said turtle costumes, needed to film their fights in a slow manner, and they sped up the camera, post production, to make the fights look normal and natural.

    Fun facts: The suit actors have uncostumed cameos. One was a foot ninja, one was a gang member, one was the pizza dude and the last guy was the passenger in the cab.
    -In one scene, Donatello has a mouth... in his mouth!
    -Originally Tazu kills that one ninja, but they made him survive his beating in post production.

    There were so many people who worked on each turtle. Character-actors who did the movements for dialogue scenes. Stuntmen for the action scenes. Multiple controllers for each turtle's head. The voice actors for each character.
    There were two sets of costumes for each turtle (maybe more, can't remember). One for tight shots and dialogue with not much action. And a head with no animatronics with a suit made for full range of motion for the fight scenes.
    But...what else would you expect from Jim Henson?

  • @Sabrecho
    @Sabrecho 9 месяцев назад

    I love that the turtles' actors pulled double duty. It's hard to nail down which "Gang Member" Leonardo was, but Mikey got out of the suit and played the Domino's Pizza guy, Raph was the guy in the cab that got startled by 'himself', and Donnie was the Messenger Ninja (Your mouth may yet bring you much trouble Miss O'neil... _thwack_ Shut it!)

    7:24 "Wonder why they're called 'The Foot Club?' They have a thing for toes?"
    Have you seen Marvel's "Daredevil?" You know how the evil ninja clan is "The Hand?"
    In the original Ninja Turtles comic, it is strongly hinted that the same radioactive goop that splashed in young Matt Murdock's eyes ran down into the sewer and mutated Splinter and The Turtles. The Turtle's Master is "Splinter" because Daredevil's Master is "Stick." Turtles lampooned a number of other popular comics at the time but there are more parallels and direct references to Daredevil.

    My brother and I grew up with all these cartoons, and I can tell you that the ninja turtles dropped on screen Before the Power rangers, by a couple of years actually. But, the cartoon was only the mainstream for the toys and general G-rated storyline. G.I. Joe and Transformers were the most popular animated shows that existed before hand.
    This first live-action film is based on the original comic line, which is some of the earliest M-rated content ever released. In fact, I believe that both Marvel & DC originally passed on the comic b/c of the brief nudity that the original artists included in the early timeline and sequel stories. NY crime was rampant, smoking in theaters still happened, or had recently been banned in NY city, and ninjas were starting to get popular. (There is a Whole list of B-rated Ninja and below films that came out at this time). Also, as for the costumes, I believe that there were some unique instances that were ground breaking. And if you delve into the sequels, its worth noting how different the lips and movements seem. The sequels also veered away from the original comic story line.
    In the original comic, it was Leo who was out and about, and got ambushed by the Foot clan. There is also some discussion about April's true character, and whether or not she was suppose to be ethnic to represent the boroughs population. The most recent animated film (2023) is the first time she has been animated as non-white.

    The final film Jim Henson worked on. Also, the TMNT began in 1984 as a comic book with some parodying of Daredevil (comic book). The radioactive ooze was directly taken from an incident in the backstory of Daredevil in which the man tries to save a kid carrying baby turtles from a flying bottle of liquid. The man becomes blind in the process and becomes Daredevil. The “Foot Clan” was a parody of the “Fist Clan” in Daredevil. Casey Jones in the comics was inspired partly by Kurt Russell’s character in the movie, Big Trouble in Little China. In all, this movie is largely based on the comic book - backstory and all - with some aspects of the cartoon added in, such as the pizza and the headbands varying in color.

    To sum it up: The original, much more violent TMNT comics were a sort of spoof of the Marvel Daredevil comics and comics like it.
    The Foot here is a play on the Hand clan Daredevil regularly fought against.
    Splinter is a play on Stick, Daredevils mentor.
    The ooze that caused Dardevil to go blind spilled in the sewer and is canonically the same ooze that mutated the turtles!
    Obviously, the 80's cartoon made them far more family friendly like we know them now-a-days.

    The 1990 movie is the perfect middle ground between what the original comics did, and taking some ideas still from the kids cartoon that took off so well in the 80's and 90's. The costumes and Splinter (a life size puppet) were made by Jim Henson who signed on for even just the proof of concept testing (no for sure pay day but made the first versions of the turtle costumes. Being a creative himself, Jim loved what the Turtles were, and how it took off, and was willing to even be a minor foot note for getting the movie started, but they kept him on for the rest of the shoot. And speaking of the comics that made the original characters, Laird and Eastman were involved heavily with the scripting, and script edits as the movie was being made, so it all got their official approval. However after the sequels for a while Laird gave up on the property fearing they were never going to be listened to, despite wanting to give what fans want, and Eastman still kept fighting on for the original vision of the Turtles, some times winning, but some times still loosing to studio pin heads that don't get it. The pair together, and separately would still continued to make comics here and there for the Turtles, but seems they've both stopped about 2012, unless they've gotten involved again recently.

    The Ninja Turtles originated as a comic book in the 1980s that acted as a parody of 1980s comic books and pop culture. X-Men was trending hugely, and so were talking animals and martial arts movies. Hence the Ninja Turtles.
    The ninja Foot Clan is a reference to the evil clan of ninja warriors called The Hand that is featured in Marvel Comics, specifically the Dare Devil books. Which were also very popular at the time, so it was very corny on purpose.
    Despite that, however, the original TMNT comic books were incredibly graphic and did not shy away from bloodshed or gore, and featured a mature story arc marketed at older teens and adult readers. These are the things that made it an unexpected hit before the 1990s film franchised went downhill because parents demanded that the films be censored. They believed that this first film was too mature and featured too much graphic violence for younger audiences.
    They also demanded that the Batman movies be censored which is how we ended up with Joel Schumacher's monstrosities Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Which nearly tanked the comic book movie genre as a whole because critics and filmmakers no longer took the genre seriously.
