Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had so many great songs such as "Lorelei", "Suite Madame Blue", "Lady", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", "Babe", "The Best Of Times", "Mr. Roboto", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Why Me", "Borrowed Time", "Rockin' The Paradise" etc.

This beautiful piece by Styx came out in 1977, my sophomore year in high school and it was voted as the song of the year in our yearbook. It was on "The Grand Illusion" and every song on there is a masterpiece. I went to see them perform this in 1979, and after over 100 concerts is still one of my top 5. This song still hits me with emotions each time I hear it. Thanks for your review.

I can’t believe they didn’t do the middle instrumental part!! It’s the best part, IMO, but I’m a prog guy anyway. It’s completely different and really fun. It’s heavily synthesizer and kind of foreshadows the “starship” theme. You should listen to the studio version.

    • @LowcountryJoe2

True. The interlude with the futuristic instrumentals is what makes the song complete.

Exactly! I always feel a little let down when reactors listen to the short version. It just feels incomplete. That missing instrumental accentuates the part of the song that follows it.

Dennis DeYoung the lead singer and primary writer for Styx wrote a song Babe for his wife's birthday. He cut a demo, and it sounded so good they put it on their next album. All the vocals are DeYoungs on the demo. There is a live version which I think he sang to his wife on her birthday.

Styx is one of the greats. You should also react to Tommy Shaw, the guitar player who also has an equally great voice as him and still puts amazing shows today as solo artist. Check out an special he did with an orchestra of young college musicians where they played maybe 4 songs of them... and it is really pretty spectacular. Great song. I remember seeing this same video and maybe 7-8 more songs in a movie theater here in Mexico maybe back in 1980, when there was no Mtv yet. Music videos or tv corcerts where not an easy thing to see on tv, so looking back, it is really weird and funny to do that in a place like that, which now explains to me why Mtv was created for in the first place. People really enjoys seeing artists performing, and I remember all the persons there in the theater were really excited to see them play. Great reaction, I enjoyed it.

Styx is from Illinois. Same with Richard Marx, REO Speedwagon, Veruca Salt. Styx has been compared to Queen 👸.
1 of the hit songs in 1970s classic rock 🎸. Produced by Styx. Written by Dennis DeYoung. He was in keyboards and lead vocals. He quit in 2000.
The other lead singer is Tommy Shaw. He is also on lead guitar 🎸 . He also plays with Damn Yankees.
I list their songs, solo and group, below.
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Styx performs Babe 2 Styx performs Love at First Sight 3 Styx performs Too Much Time on My Hands 4 Dennis DeYoung performs Desert 🏜 Moon 🌙 5 Damn Yankees perform High Enough.

This version of the song is called the "radio edit", which cuts out the instrumental part. You might have noticed that there was a cut in the video between the first chorus and "I thought that they were angels...". That is where the instrumental part would be. There is also an even shorter version that also cuts out the part of the verse that starts with "I look to the sea...", along with the instrumental part. That is the "single version". Back in the 1960's and 1970's, radio stations tended to want only songs that were less than 4 minutes, so record companies made edited versions. That way they could play more songs and still leave time for a lot of commercials. You should definitely try to listen to the full album version, which runs 6 minutes 10 seconds.

This album (Titled The Grand Illusion) was first released in July, 1977. My freshman year of high school). If you enjoyed this hacked and slashed version of this song, then you REALLY need to hear the studio version. While there, I also highly recommend you listen to the title track and suggest you have the lyrics handy just to follow along and avoid any misinterpretations. That song is still as relevant today as it was then. The lyrics really opened a lot of eyes and minds through the years

In Greek mythology, "STYX" was a goddess and river of the Underworld. Her parents were the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, and she was the wife of the Titan Pallas, and the mother of Zelus, Nike, Kratos, and Bia. She sided with Zeus in his war against the Titans, and because of this, to honor her, Zeus decreed that the solemn oaths of the gods be sworn by the water of Styx.

The transition out of that solo, back into the rest of the song (which is missing from this version) is the best part of the song. It's CRIMINAL to use this shortened version. Styx has more awesome songs than almost any other band. You could start by listening to Styx greatest hits 1 and 2. Another some other great song you could check out of theirs is Lady and Suite Madam Blue and Sweet Mademoiselle

This is a great song yes, but my favorite by them is "Babe" which he wrote for his wife. Schnell you should do a reactions video for it!!
