    I owned and used a 1957 one as my everyday car in the late 60's. Beautiful and would outrun a mini 1000 at a good 40 miles per gallon. Was right hand drive and had freewheel.

      We owned 1959. It also was RH drive. Bought new on Cyprus as one of the last 1958 built models. It wore a DKW label on the rear which likely was the result of them cleaning out the parts bins. I own a 1962 750 cc Junior's drivetrain. Just need to find a good chassis for it. Miss that old car.

    Der Mann am Steuer geht sehr sorgsam mit dem Auto um! Er reißt die Gänge nicht durch, sondern macht immer eine ganz kurze Pause in der Leerlaufstellung. Und so lassen sich die Gänge wunderbar schalten. Genau so ist es richtig!

    Schöne Töne! So ein gleiches Auto (1970 für 240 DM gekauft) habe ich leider 1971 bei einem Mehrfachüberschlag geschrottet. Meine Rippen waren gebrochen, der 3=6 sah aus wie ein Giebeldach, die hinteren Räder waren flach unter den Wagenboden geklappt!

    Mi padre compró un Auto Union 1000S en Argentina en el año 1965. Lo tuvimos en la familia muchos años. Ese auto lo compró en el consecionario que pertenecía a Juan M. Fangio que vendía autos de esta marca. Ubicado en el barrio de Constitución en la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

      Thanks Kelly! She is a joy to drive, allthough I really had to get used to the gearshifter. If felt like every gear was located exactly opposite of where I thought it should be. But hey, it was indeed nice to drive! Regards, Walter

    I've heard about the odd shift pattern, where 1 is below 2, and 3 is below 4. Where's reverse?

      @Roy Paz Good eye, thanks! And very interesting. The only other vehicle I know with that pattern is the Renault Estafette, which was a commercial microvan.

      Reverse is all the way towards you, then press the top of the shift lever towards the steering column and shift upward (i.e) the lever travels higher than 2nd or 4th.

    It has a really weird engine transmission layout, the front has transverse style leaf spring that sits above the longitudanal transmission, and the inline 3 engine sits ahead of the front axle on the front overhang, and the radiator sits on top the leaf spring in the middle of the engine bay, with fan connected to pulley right up to the front grill 😂 the car is front wheel driven where such setup can be rear wheel driven, I guess that's when the quattro finally came later on. But really weird engine transmission layout, a tradition that Audi still carries to this day 😮

    In meiner Jugend, zur Zweitakterzeit, galt der klötternde DKW mit blauer Abgasfahne in meinem Elternhaus und unter meinen Freunden und Klassenkameraden immer als "Arme- Leute Auto", über das wir gerne gelästert haben.

    When did they change from the vertical speedo to the dual clocks? I would feel naked driving without seat belts.

      The dual clocks were first, then in later Auto Union 1000 Coupe´s, with the evolving windshield ,they introduced the verical speedometer!!!!!

      The round instruments to vertical speedometer changed in 1959 when the AU1000/60 with panoramic windscreen was released.

      @@guselias2287 si a vos te gusta, es problema tuyo. A mi me pareció espantoso. Nunca vi un florero en un tablero de un auto. Y no es necesario agredir para poner un comentario. Eso demuestra lo "burro" que sos. Además DKW tuve dos y los compre 0km uno en el 66 y otro en el 69. A ambos los tuve por más de 15 años. Gran auto.

      @@EggsdeeXD The plant in Brazil produced them after the Germans stopped making them. :-P The Argentina plant produced them for two years after the Brazil plant started making Audis.

      One only shifts from third to fourth gear at 55 mph (about 90 km/h)on this model. It's actually far lower revving than you'd think. At 85mph (130 km/h) its only doing around 4500RPM.

      It would always get you home as long as you didn't seize a bearing. The engine had 3 sets of points and three coils. Two were enough to get you to where it could be fixed.

      You're wrong there mate. Those engines are nearly bullet proof and run over 100 000 miles between overhauls. They are super reliable and great performers I have owned enough DKW's and driven 1000's of miles to know. I still have three of them now.
