    Very interesting video. I had one DKW F94 from the early 60's, build here in Argentina with german parts. It was a gift from my parents for my twenty-one birthday. Lovely, lovely little car. 🥰

    I guess you're coming to that, but I find it hilarious the DKW set-up with the engine mounted longitudinally in front of the front axle and the gearbox behind the transaxle becoming the default Audi set-up to this day. It is common these days talking about "brand DNA", like VW owned Bentley would share any DNA with any Bentley before it? While on reality it shares a DNA with every Audi coming before it back to the DKW F9.

      BTW: Even the latest electric cars which don't even have a combustion engine in front of the front axle anymore, still have the same proportions... Engineers design what they are used to...

      @@BSport320 I blame Ferdinand Piech. When he succeeded with mounting a straight five that way for Audi he realized there's no end to the concept. The Bentley Continental is only the logical extension, but it really is hilarious opening the hood and seeing the entire W12 hanging in front of the suspension struts.

      @@ingvarhallstrom2306 The interesting thing is that every time they developed this design further, they were in a rush and just adapted instead of changing the base concept to solve the disadvantages:
      - 1938 when they created this design
      - 1950 when they quickly needed something to build after the war
      - 1965 (AUDI 72) when they quickly needed a 4-stroke engine
      - 1977 when they quickly needed more power (5 cylinders)
      - 1988 when they needed 8 cylinders (Audi V8)
      - 2001 when the A8 needed 12 cylinders
      - 2003 when they quickly needed a platform for modern Bentleys
      - and later on (until today) when Audi was responsible to create a platform with longitudinal engines for the VW group.
      In my time as Audi engineer in the technical development in Ingolstadt I experienced this topic as the holy cow. They work around it instead of solving the main issue of the engine's position, because this is how they always did it and today's engineers often don't know where this is coming from.

      @@BSport320 well, look at Citroen from Lefebvre‘s Traction Avant in 1934- I have one- they drive really well. You have a good longitudinal stability plus good traction plus everything is at reach when it comes to repairs. Citroen continued that with the 1948 2CV Ente, then 1955 DS, 1970 with the GS (flat boxer as planned for the DS), the SM… it is not a bad thing to follow the basic laws of physics…

    I lived in Vienna, Austria, as a kid in 1968-69 and saw lots of DKW 900s on the roads. I was quite the car nut at the time. Unfortunately, my Dad was a Volkswagen buff and he called every DKW he saw "Stinkauto." I was too young to understand his explanation of two vs. four stroke engines but it did look like there was more blue smoke coming out of the DKW exhausts. Today I think the DKWs are very beautiful. The simplicity of the two stroke engine has a lot going for it. But what I love most is that beautiful sound that makes me think there is a formula one engine under the hood!

      @ Stuart M Most likely what you saw was the Auto Union 1000 derived from the DKW 3=6 produced in Düsseldorf West Germany from 1955 to 1963. Type Number F93/F94. The factory stayed at Mercedes Benz after1964 when VW bought The shares from Auto Union.
      Later in 1997 the Light Truck Transport Van Sprinter was produced there .

      The DKW F9 was produced as IFA F9 between 1949 and 1954 at Zwickau and afterwards at Eisenach in BMW‘S old factory until the production of Wartburg started at 1956/57 with 900 cc and 28 to 32 bhp

    The Audi Front UW (Turned Wanderer) had the same drivetrain layout as the later Citroen DS, which was in fact a mid engine design with very good weight distribution and road handling!

    Schöner Beitrag.Fehlt eigentlich nur,das die Produktion des F9 von Zwickau auch nach Eisenach ging und dort überarbeitet als F9 / EMW 309 weiterproduziert wurde.Mit diesem Fahrzeug hat man den Zweitakter übernehmen müssen,der weiterentwickelt bis 1990 in dem Wartburg lief.Der F9/ EMW 309 war der Vorgänger des bekannten Wartburg 311.Mein vergessener Superstar ist ein EMW 309 BJ 1954 und steht in meiner Garage😊

    Sixty years ago I bought my very first car. It was a second hand IFA F9, one of few cars available for a poor Swedish student. It saved my first years as a car owner.

    👍👌👏 Simply fantastic! This is definitely a very well done documentation/documentary! Congrats! Although I'm a German, I absolutely never liked the VW beetle (nearly hate it). Inside the cabin it always stank for gasoline etc.p.p.. The 1930s design was outdated already after the WW2. On the other hand I always adored the gorgeous DKW 1000 SP or 3=6. But even as I a child in the 1960s and 70s not much DKW could be seen.
    I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the second part.
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.

    I was born a long time ago in Tehran. I remember the DKWs with their rwo stroke engines, were used as Taxis. The other one that later completely disappeared, was the Mercedes 170, yes the one with the doors opening the wrong way, and full plush red leather seats.

    Very interesting- I've been to the Audi museum in Ingolstadt and have seen IFA cars at a railway musuem in Dresden. I am sure you know that the 2-cylinder DKW engine was produced by Saab for use in their model 92s. I have a Saab 93F 2-takt. I am looking forward to your next video on these cars. I would love to own a DKW!
    Also, the Beetle was actually copied from the Tatra, designed by Hans Ledwinka- some information on that would I'm sure be appreciated. A friend owns several Tatras.

    When I was growing up there was a DKW down the court.
    2-stroke engine and the tail was 'bout 8"-10" higher than the front.

    Wenn man den DKW mit seinen damaligen Konkurrenten vergleicht, dann hatten sie schon damals Frontantrieb und lagen damit besser auf der Straße, gerade bei Nässe und Schnee. Der Zweitakter war damals absolut zeitgemäß. Es war einfach ein fortschrittliches Auto.

    In Poland, we used to say that the DKW was made of "dykta, klej, i woda", hence DKW. In English, "cardboard, glue, and water."

    Ahem ...I owned 4 of these cars... All four where the 1000's... fantastic cars...I bought my first one in 1972...I was trapped for speeding doing 100miles an hour....The Speedo was calibrated at that... Which made me very proud inspite of the ticket for speeding...Hahaa... It was by the way me going down hill with my foot hard on the petrol... Hahaa...Those vehicles never let me down...come winter or summer... I had lovely old German friend who was a Diesel Mechanic, who worked on these vehicles...And he said, which I"d like to believe, he said why they never produced cars like DKW. Was it was a too good a car... He said was a perfect vehicle... The motor manufacturers don't make cars like that any more cos, it just goes on and on...It out lasts just about all vehicles of today...hah. Very sad indeed...

    Influence: the chassis of the DKW F9 was used until 1991 for the Wartburg.

    My family had a DKW & later a VW. Still preferred the quirkiness of the DKW, and it had a heater which worked. Unlike the frosted windows in the winter with the VW. Only car I ever drove that needed the inside windows scraped. Lol

      The heating heat exchanger round the exhaust pipes worked fine on a new V.W. But the Beatles I bought (second and third hand beat up examples} were downright dangerous from carbon monoxide leakage. The Beatles' heating system in winter was a stark choice between either choke to death from the poisonous fumes or freeze to death from the cold.

    Tolle Recherche ! Im DKW 3=6 wurden wir als kleine Kinder zum Kindergarten gefahren. Er war grasgrün und wir nannten ihn DKW Frosch. Aber außer seiner Form habe ich kaum Erinnerungen an das Fahrzeug. Gelegentlich sprang er nicht an, das weiß ich noch. Die ganze Entwicklung der Autoindustrie hat eben unter starker politischer/militärischer Einflußnahme gestanden. Dennoch ist bemerkenswert, was einzelne Köpfe in der Industrie alles haben bewegen können. Porsche gehört definitiv dazu, auch wenn ich von seiner Person nicht unbedingt Fan bin.

    The former Danish Director and originator, Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen, was pressed out by The Nazis and today is buried north of Ringsted in Denmark. Once a year owners of DKWs meet by his grave!

    During my childhood in the 1970ies there were still some DKW F8 and F9 on the roads and of course their successors, the Trabant 500, 600, 601 and the Wartburg 1000 and 353 followed by the 353W in the early 1980ies.
    DKW started its business in 1916 with the prospective of development of several military cars driven by steam engines. That's why they called themself in the beginning Dampf-KraftWagen (or D.K.W. with the dots). But allready in the 1910th the internal combustion engines started their victory way which was very surpricing at this time, because the steam engine allready had a history of 200 years and there were a number of very light weight fast running steam engines running in cars since 100 years (the busses in london were driven by - steam engines in 1816).
    Interestingly a car drive system development company Ingenieurgesellschaft Auto und Verkehr in Chemnitz restarted the history of fast running steam engines for cars in the late 1990ies. In the early 2000th they were successful with the development of the Zero Emission Engine ZEE03. This steam engine offered a power of 75 kW out of 1000 cm³ stroke volume in the classic DKW 3-cylinder-in-line arrangement with a COP of 45%. Not so bad for a steam engine. The total water volume of this engine was 250 cm³.
    This engine was very unconventional. There was a relatively small boiler for the preparation of saturated steam at 200 bar and 350 °C. The engine had 3 separate superheater working up to 900 °C on top of each cylinder head. So the superheated steam was produced just in the moment of steam injection.
    The Rankine cycle works with 2 steps: compression of the remaining steam inside the cylinder, steam injection and expansion. At the end of the expansion stroke a control slit opens its way downstream through a heat exchanger to the condensator. In the upstream this heat exchanger delivers the boiler from the condensator reservoir.
    Some of the engines were built in Skoda cars and tested on the streets. After a few minutes the boiler had enough steam and the superheaters have reached their temperature to start the car. The main problem was freezing of the water due to decomposition of the water and the anti-freeze in the cycle. The engine behaviour in the car was comparable with electric engines. It is not necessary use a starter drive nor to run the engine idle. The engine developed its full torque from zero rpm.
    The boiler and superheater were fired with propane. But the fuel doesn't matter. The prospect of the development was the substitution of turbo Diesel engines. So the development came unfortunately too early. From the viewpoint of efficiency the engine is about comparable to an electric drive chain including a hydrogen or direct methanol fuel cell. It can be operated by use of Energy-to-fuel media like hydrogen, methane, methanol, or propane.

    I like this car. I remember similar looking IFA from East Germany. I think only two things missed on that car. At first four stroke engine with sleeve valves could be better option for this car. And at second it could be better as hatchback then saloon/sedan. But this is more advanced car then VW Beetle which I can seem to me as very unpractical design

    reminds me of the 2-stroke 3-cylinder SAAB -- saw + heard one in Seattle, 1987 -- wagon/estate body type
    Had a 2-stroke 3-cylinder motorcycle at the time
    That was at UW Seattle, where a windtunnel was built in 1917
    (Saw / heard / smelled Trabants in summer 1989.)

      The DKW racing bikes. ..I seem to recall that the 3 cylinder engine had one of the cylinders acting as a compressor with a dummy spark plug in it thereby getting round the supercharger ban .True or false? I remember seeing them racing at the Avus - Otto Kluge ? they were seizing up on the flat out blast down the autobahn.They gave it a minute to cool down and then continued racing.... !954 Walter Zeller riding for BMW , Carlo Bandirola on the 4 cylinder MV Agusta. Great memories.of skiving off my duties to watch them practising.

    Amazing cars. The trunk holds a bicycle. And car will do a 90* turn at 50kph. A Beetle would roll over. 4 speed all synchro. Just a shame DKW didn't use a flat 4 petrol engine up front like the Hansa Goliath.

      I don't think a Beetle would roll over but when I was 18 I went too fast into a 90 degree turn and the rear swung out, making the car instantly uncontrollable. I did a 270 degree spin and crashed into a building.

      @@PrimoStracciatella Sorry, I didn't see your reply until now. When I was an apprentice at a VW agency in the late '60s, many Beetles got rolled on road test. Our punishment? We'd have to inform the owner. We probably lost 15 Beetles in my time there. I rolled my VW beach buggy, breaking my cobber's ribs.

    My father owned 2 DKW 3=6 in nthe late fifties, killed 3 engines. I have a photo of me behind it, so must have been 1954 or 1965.
    And in my neighvourhood someone has one, I see it from time to time parked outside.

      Maybe he forgotten to add oil 50:1 ratio. We used ordinary motor oil. The newer less smoke 2 stroke oil were available. Plus these 2 strokes cannot use engine braking. As no oil is going thru crankcase. Saab has a free wheel. Then it can be dangerous as single circuit brakes ! Plus they were a drums(?)

    When production changed from civil to military vehicles what models of military vehicles did the Zwickau factory produce?

      They produced the Horch 901 for example but not just cars. They also produced tank engines and ammunition.
      The last civil car left the factory in 1941.

      Actually I saw lots of military "Jeeps" in (West)Germany in the 60s, as far as I know they were made by DKW, had a 3 cyl 2 stroke engine and were called "Munga".

    Hey Martin, I was just thinking whether we could get your opinion on two brand new cars:
    A Swiss company just burst on the supercar stage with a twin turbo V6 carbon tub road racer : the Picasso 660LMS. As the name suggest, they target Le Mans with a version of that car, but for now we have a quite extreme road car with a carbon tub and rear subframe, 660 ps, and a claimed 960kg of downforce at the 196mph top speed. They seem to be quite serious, and have got some stuff to back up their claims, but I'd be curious to know what you think.
    Alpine just unveiled their Alpenglow, it's definitely an unrealistic concept car with hydrogen propulsion, variable opacity bodywork, and some other stuff. Style wise, it's got vibes from the Renault DeZir concept (which was interestingly one of the many signs that a new Alpine was on the way), but more interestingly also from long tail Le Mans racers, and (surprise) the Peugeot 9X8. And that's where I'd love to have your opinion: the car is part F1, part Le Mans prototype, single seater with a feet-up (I think) driving position, aero profiled F1 suspension elements, a 9X8 rear wing, a Valkyrie diffuser, a central fin, etc. It looks to me to be a bit like the Mazda Furai, definitely a (very good looking) concept, but maybe made with a more serious intent, which in this case could maybe be announcing their future LMH racer, in a way like what Cadillac did?

    .Was not the DKW copied and made in East Germany? under IFA or some such name. Legend has it that the entire staff legged it over the Border one dark night and and carried on working at the former DKW factory the following Monday. .I always thought the Sonderklasse was a lovely looking little car but my. word that two stroke engine and its smoke trail following on behind - It would never pass todays polution test.

      DKW was a East German brand. They brought drawings to Ingolstadt, so the other direction, and built the new DKW brand there, as the video describes.

    It was known as ... Deuche Kleine Wonder... for me it was precisely that...forgive my spelling..! The pistons were aligned at an angle...it was revolutionary...Often when people took their DKW's for a service and especially to have rings and pistons fitting, the mechanic would put the piston in the wrong way, which messed up the engine block...as far as my memory services me right the pistons should be put in from the bottom...Yes... Hahaha...

    DKW always interested me. Deutsche Kraft Wagen which many Germans called Deutsche Kinder Wagen. There incorporation into auto union must have helped stop some of those "Kinderwagen" jokes. 🙂

    That car in the pictures is looks more like an IFA F9 (badge in the grille) not the DKW.

      It's the DKW F9 and the picture is from the advertisement in 1939. You can also see it at the license plate "IA", which was not used after the war.
      "I" - Roman Number 1 stands for Prussian territory
      "A" - Stands for the capital Berlin
      But DKW F9 and IFA F9 are the same car and look very similar.

      IFA is actually not a car brand but the acronyms of a state owned conglomerate in what became DDR under the Soviet supervision after the war. When the invading forces closed in on Zwickau the DKW engineers fled and took with them most, but not all drawings and plans and ended up in what became West Germany. For that reason the F9 became two different cars with a few but distinct differences; for example, the three-point ignition system never appeared in the IFA (to my knowledge) and the streamlined body appeared first on the DDR-produced 3-cylinder IFA while DKW produced their first streamlined version with the 2-cylinder engine from the F8 in 1952. The 3-cylinder version came in the 1954 model (in Sweden). That is why some images of the same streamlined body is actually the original DKW design studie and some are showing the IFA F9 with the IFA badge that the DKW does not have. My father owned several DKW's between 1934 and 1963 and some of his recollections of the war and especially the fate of DKW and Auto Union are mixed with publicly available information in my comment (above).

      Your comment is understandable but disappointing. In having this presentation in English he is sharing some valuable German history and technology with the world, remember how many people speak English, it is an international language and provides a basis for us to share so many things. As such I don't see it as language, it is communication, much like the metric system provides the common basis for engineering.
      As someone who has owned VW Beetles, worked on Goliaths and experienced the very early DKW 2 cylinder 2 stroke cars, as well as the later 3=6 models, I very much appreciate his work and effort.
      Also remember the point that was made during this presentation, the British army re-established Wolfsburg and VW production very soon after war's end providing work and food for the workers there ultimately resulting in the VW enterprise we see today - a company which dissapointingly recently blotted its copybook with the dieselgate scandal.

      Allerdings geht es mir darum, dass die Fahrzeuge nicht geschlachtet und in Teilen verkauft werden, das kann ich selbst auch, ich möchte das die Fahrzeuge von echten DKW Fans "gerettet" werden, (obwohl sehr großer Aufwand) und wieder auf die Straße gebracht werden.

      Genau, das waere auch nicht meine Absicht. Durch die Recherche zu diesen Videos habe ich mich bereits nach F9's umgeschaut. Mein Trabant wird ueber den Winter restauriert und dann waere ein F9 ein schoenes neues Projekt.

    Dkw was just bad. Audi sucked, VW outdated, Bmw rusted fast, mercs sucked overall, Borgward was already bankrupt. My dad drove a small Alfa, my mum Datsun 1000.

      Yet the VW Beetle was one of the top selling vehicles of all time and VW became one of the largest automakers in the world.
      Borqward wasn't bankrupt it had cash flow problems.
      When it emerged from Court after all its assets had been sold the sales of those assets paid off all creditors.
      Mercedes Benz is the most profitable manufacturer per unit in the world.
      BMW Mercedes and Audi are some of the top selling luxury vehicles in the world and have untold numbers of repeat buyers that were obviously happy enough with their vehicle to spend a significant amount of money on another one.
      Alfa Romeo...
      A brand known for occasional design brilliance but more well-known for unreliability poor durability and is one of the slowest selling vehicles in its segment.
      Datsun nee Nissan...
      A shell of its former self. Had to merge with Renault to avoid bankruptcy and today is known as a rather low to mid-range quality vehicles that are outclassed by numerous other marques.
      Alfa Romeo and Datsun are both notorious for their propensity to rust quickly.
      Alfa Romeo only survived until it was taken over by Fiat because it was state-owned and the state absorbed its massive losses.

      I arrived in Berlin on June 17th at the height of the riots in the East sector. After a dose of Ruski occupation the English soldiers were welcomed , so much so that they extended the privilege of free travel on public transport around the city which their own Army had enjoyed.
