I'm only 2 minutes into this video and I am already excited enough to leave a long winded comment about how excited I am to see you enjoying old metal minis! They are a passion of mine and I have painted quite a few. Time to finish the video! I just got back from NOVA and this is exactly what I needed!
One little tip to save money on buying texture paste is to buy cheap, textured wood filler from your local discount store. It comes in pretty nice size tubs, spreads like peanut butter, is air-drying, and takes paint very well. A way to make it pre-coloured is to mix cheap acrylic burnt umber paint from a tube (Also available in discount stores in amongst the toys and children's art supplies sections) with a little Lamp Black tube paint, then mix it all together, and just apply where needed. It's cheap, easy to make, and leaves you with more money to spend on minis and supplies. As a long, long time fan of Nurgle from way back in the Rogue Trader days, I have to agree that the artwork was what got me into the GW area of gaming, as John Blanche and his friends really did make their artwork bring the hobby to life, was inspiring, and the minis, although not as pristine as todays offerings, were so full of character and fun to look at (Anyone else remember the Drunk Orcs and Female Orcs, as well as the pirate Ork Freebooterz? SO funny, and so much joy to have painted in your forces). I recently got back into painting Nurgle minis for a friend, and am now seriously considering getting my own sets, just for the sheer joy of painting truly disgusting colour schemes and converting other minis to fit into the new army I have in mind. For me, Oldhammer is much more appealing than Age of Sigmar, as it allows you free reign to imagine, scratch-build/kit-bash, convert and paint your own, non-codex minis, just to fit in with what you really want your army to look and feel like, and not just for the fact that the Army Rulebook says you should have them. Keep up the good work, Zambies, and keep inspiring all your viewers along the way. 💚
I never thought about textured wood filler, but that makes sense! I love John Blanche's work and I remember those orks haha. Nurgle is a lot of fun to play around with. I've always been a fan of AoS but Oldhammer has been sweeping my heart for all those reasons. Thank you for your kind words! :)

Beyond that about Oldhammer-middlehammer this makes me think of how lot of us sort of encounter Warhammer sort of all at once right... with middlehammer and oldhammmer sort of blending. Even in White Dwarf, codexes/rulebooks, etc. there were plenty of legit oldhammer minis, terrain, kicking around in the late 90s.. early to even mid 2000s.

I was an oldhammer player back in the late 80s. I was normally focused on building my army of elves but really had a soft spot for snotlings. The best kit I had of them was the snotling war wagon. Essentially a rustic looking set of bunk beds on wheels with a studded log on the front which was set up similar to a combine harvester as it ran into its opposition. This was a wonderful metal kit.
I love that old model and wish they would re-release it in plastic ♥️ Anyone know of a place to find it as a 3D print file? Fantastic little diorama! I've seen some of your previous videos but now you've gained a new follower!

Love this video! The White Dwarf 100-110 or so are my absolute favourites, it's when their boxed games really took off along with Rogue Trader. Your vignette looks wonderful as well, fantastic work. My favourite minis from that era are the bald Slaanesh Champion with four arms and a serpent's body instead of legs, and the Blood Bowl Elf Blitzer with mohawk. Pure 80's goodness.
The use of the 3D printer supports was really creative as it was pulling double duty evoking the mangroves in many swamps as well as looking like bronchioles in a diseased pair of lungs

Today I learned that I am old haha. I was into GW stuff back in the 90s and never heard the term “Oldhammer” before. I miss painting minis - I wonder if I still have some in storage. Anyway this was cool and relaxing and the result looks great. All hail the mighty (and mysteriously clairvoyant) algorithm.
Nice work! Maybe I ought to start stockpiling more junk to this end? And yes, the old school Warhammer artwork is brilliant. I was first exposed to it when I bought the gatefold vinyl version of Bolt Thrower's classic "Realm of Chaos" album and I loved it right away because that's as metal as it gets!
@@Zambies Sadly, I don't anymore. I sold off my vinyl collection since it was just gathering dust and I got good money for it, too. But that album...whew! It was like the fist of God descending upon your turntable at the time since 7-string guitars were a new and rare thing and a band tuning down that low (A below low E) was unheard of in those days. Karl Willetts himself told me "Ah yeah! Strings flappin' in the breeze," back in the day. Ah, to be a geriatric headbanger, and my gateway bands were better than yers, dang it. *j/k*

I worked for GW during this era. What's interesting is people always assume the miniatures back then were heavily influenced by a style to create the gritty and certain sculpts they have. The truth is, they were more influenced by two things: First, the models were very limited due to our rubber mold/spin casting technology. Models couldn't be too spiky or they would rip through molds quickly. They couldn't be too "3 dimensional", like today's models with forward facing guns and tails, etc. This was because the spin casting works best on a sort of "cookie cutter" type shape, hence all the models from that era having a shape with hands on either side/laid flat look. The models couldn't be multi-part unless the price warranted it because this doubled or tripled the price of production. Second, they were heavily influenced by the fact that there just weren't that many sculptors willing to sculpt on that scale and GW wasn't exactly rolling in money to pay for top sculptors. So the majority of sculptors were hobbyists or former jewelry designers and a real motley crew. People forget that nowadays, sculptors either use digital or they sculpt in large scale and have it digitally or physically scaled down. Back then, those weren't options so you had to sculpt every little detail. Combine that with the limited quality from a spin cast, and you were left with small skulls that looked like blobs and pieces that no human could decipher. It definitely was a unique time there and I remember it fondly. It was not uncommon to see the "big names" of the company just hanging out...Andy Chambers, Rick Priestley, Jervis Johnson, etc. And if you had a good idea, it might make it into White Dwarf or even the next set of rules. It's sad those days will never come again now that GW is public and a larger company.
Thank you for sharing this! It's really interesting to know the history. They were definitely limited by the technology and money at that time. But some of the best work comes from being inventive / creative within constraints. Also, cool to hear about the jewelry workers. It makes a lot of sense. I used to do jewelry working and often use techniques and tools from it in my scratch building. You aren't wrong. Partly why Oldhammer is special. It was from a time where the community felt more connected to the small company inspiring artists & gamers rather than just consumers for a larger one to profit off of.
hey there, what issue was the mag you were looking at? I had that exact magazine back in the day as I recognise all the Nurgle artwork!! Youre so right about the old casts, I love the fact that everything is skew-wiff, nothing is straight and its all a bit wonky, just adds so much character and heart, wish I had kept all my old minis. . .I was a huge fan from the late 80s and went away for a good 15 years but im back again!!! haha great channel by the way, only just discovered it! subbed!

I have a lot of old favorite metal minis. I really like the metal Mk8 space marine sculpts, the metal masters of the chapter, sternguard minis. I have a new appreciation for the old DA minis too. I'm currently trying to restore a Juan Diaz metal Daemon Prince. I had to kitbash him a bit since parts were missing though.
@@MyNameIsBee To my fingers, no just keep them damp and wash them well afterwards. You should probably wear gloves but I don’t like the feel of trying to sculpt with them. To the tools, I keep them wet or sometimes I use a little Vaseline. (You can use this on your hands too) If you use Vaseline though you will need to wash the model after it’s dry so paint will stick to it. To the models, I want it to stick but if you want it to be less tacky, I would use less milliput or just green stuff. I often use a plastic sheet on my desk so it doesn’t get on my hobby area as well. I hope this helps answer your question! :)
I'm firmly of the opinion that Oldhammer is more a state of mind than anything else, and those that stick rigidly to a set of dates (nothing after '89 or '92 or whatever) can go and boil their heads. Talking of dates though; that GUO is a slightly updated one from the early '00s with an alternate head.
@@blastvader Agreed that Oldhammer is definitely a state of mind! Yeah the model’s body is from 1996 but I used an alternative head for it. I’m more of a fan of that one than the other with antlers.

@@artlesscalamity I prefer to use the term finely aged, haha. I hope you do find some in storage! Thanks for watching :)
For poor Vince this would be one big exposure exercise.

awesome!!!! (the old death guard of warhammer 40K are very good miniatures for testing paint technics)

best video yet Zams.. love all of it
@@gor5865 aw thanks, Gor!!
@@MaskedRiderChris It’s awesome you still have the vinyl! 🤘🤘
Very very good

Youre so right about the old casts, I love the fact that everything is skew-wiff, nothing is straight and its all a bit wonky, just adds so much character and heart, wish I had kept all my old minis. . .I was a huge fan from the late 80s and went away for a good 15 years but im back again!!! haha
great channel by the way, only just discovered it! subbed!
Thank you! I showed a few different issues but the one with all the Nurgle stats is #119 from Nov 1989. I love the wonky. Welcome back, I hope you can get your hands on some of your old models. :)
@@Zambies 1989! Damn, that makes me feel old!!! haha. . .that old nurgle artwork always stuck in my mind, almost reminds me of William Hogarths drawing style... love it

Do you do anything so the miliput/green stuff doesn't stick?

@@Zambies sacrilege! Antlers McSnaketongue is a precious baby and nobody can convince me otherwise!
@@blastvader haha, he will forever be called Antlers McSnaketongue by me now. Fair, but sadly I didn’t have that head, so I couldn’t use it. :(

You have an OG Ghazkull in your collection?! I'd love to see your take on him 👌 I also very much enjoyed how you made it sound like the pot of Goblin Green was a vintage bottle of wine! How did you come to possess a completely fresh, unopened pot?
Great video, Zamz!
@@GhostMkrMiniatures thanks! A voiceover class from Brent would be cool. I’ll have to tell him I keep getting comments like this haha. 🤣 I’m taking it as a big compliment.
I’m planning something special for Ghazkull. That fine pot of paint was gifted to me by Creationrites. :)
Curious why tattoo on your skin helps with glazing consistency
Good question! My skin is pale and the tattoo is black, so gives a good comparison on coverage. How strong the glaze is, if I need to thin it more. :)
Sanding FDM is safe ?
@@Starburst7641 I would advise using a mask and ventilation to not breathe it in but it is totally fine to sand it. I’m not a doctor so I can’t speak on health concerns. As far as I’ve researched there are no major risks. About the same with most microplastics in the hobby. 😅. If you are looking for a smoother finish I would use higher grit and sand in circles. I was just ruffing up surface for this project.
Thats actaully not the 90s Great unclean, this is the 2002 re-realsead version with alternative head for the then new Chaos Warriors army in Warhammer Fantasy.
@@florian847 Yes and no. The body is the original one from 1996. It’s carved into the bottom. I didn’t have the original head for it so I used the updated one though.
