A few more pros and cons not mentioned:
Cons:
- Fiddly assembly. Malifaux models can be pretty difficult to assemble and paint.
- Play Time: Malifaux games tend to be on the longer side if you don't play with a clock. With a clock games tend to last 2.5h.
- business model: Some boxes contain models from multiple factions. It's not a biggy. But not great.
Pro or Con:
- diverse appearance: while less models need to be painted, fewer models share common parts. So batch painting is a little more difficult. Ofc the upside is that each single model can be considered a character model which is really cool.
- Depth: Malifaux is an incredibly deep game. Each model has its own profile. While a single keyword shares around 2 passive abilities, there are usually more that define a specific model. Attacks and tactical actions also are dependent on the model. This game needs brain power and some time to learn your (and the opponents) models. It is very unlikely you will ever keep track of everything. On the flip side the games also is very rewarding once the initial learning phase has passed. The good thing is that the rule book is comparatively small.
- Gamey: The game is marker heavy. There is a core mechanic, the scheme marker, that is used as a place holder for all kinds of abilities. This is more of an upside as it usually also reflects a models' background. But there also are a lot more markers. Ice Pillars, Fire, Traps, Spider webs, pianos (yeah pianos!!)... and then there are a range of conditions like bleed, adversary, poison, stunned, staggered and so on. All of these help to translate the background into the game. But it also makes the game feel "gamey" at times and can make the table feel crowded.
- Terrain: The game needs a lot of terrain. Not quite Infinity level of terrain. But you will need a good mixture of all kinds of terrain to play the game as intended.
Pros:
- Background: it's unique and diverse. One of the coolest aspects is that each characters reflects its background on the table. Wyrd has done an incredible job with this. Each crew is very unique with cool and fluffy abilities
- Strategy and Schemes: Both players share a mission (Strategy) and then select 2 from a pool of randomly determined sub-missions (Schemes) which are kept secret. This favors player skill and keeps tension and bluffing in the game. Here again you can learn to read an opponents list and their moves to guess their Schemes. Additionally, this makes for incredible re-play ability.
- Regular balance updates: Models get updates if they are too strong or too weak. Those are available for free. You can't do much better than this.
- Thriving online games: Via vassal you most likely can always found someone to play with online. While not the most modern software, it allows you to get some games in no matter what.
- Overall the game constantly asks you questions and requires you to make decisions. Each flip potentially can be cheated. You can attack your own models (which can have benefits at times). The suit of a card matters for most attacks. So you not only need to consider each card in multiple aspects.
Overall Malifaux is one of the best games on the market if you are looking for a "main" game. It is deep enough to fill your whole hobby time and keep you interested for years to come. Wholeheartedly recommended.
I’m a simple man… I see Malifaux content, I like and sub.
Thanks for the support! Its greatly appreciated. Hopefully we can continue to supply good Malifaux content for you to enjoy!
I came here to say exactly this :D
😊😊😊😊@@bang-averagegaming
Omg, same here! I think Malifaux deserves way more love than it gets! So yeah, I will keep my eye on this channel for sure. :)
I feel like I might be doing the same soon I'm looking at Neverborn Titania fae really hard right now
So excited to see a new Malifaux friend!
Malifaux has a model that's literally a hat with a gatling gun. A hatling gun, if you will.
If that doesn't sell you on the game, then idk what will
Don't forget about the Whiskey Golem. That's what got me xD
For me it was Teddy, back when the game was still fairly new. I saw him in a catalog and had to play.
I have been on the outside looking in with Malifaux for years. My biggest barrier to entry is finding other players in my area. Love the game, love the lore, love the models.
Yo this video is Fresh AF
Thanks for the content! looking forward to more
Good stuff, hoping to see more!
"fuck you Seamus"
I unsubscribed just so I could subscribe a second time 🤣🤣
@@DefectiveDice We all love a good Seamus meme! Damien is the next one in the pipeline...
Veni, vidi, vici - I came, i liked, i subscribed. More videos of Malifaux making the world a better place :)
Great content 👏 can’t wait to see more!
Thanks for this ONE!
5:16 - 5:22 😂😂😂😂 that is all
Welcome to Malifaux! I'm really interested to see what you put out next, especially as someone brand new to the game 👍
GW charges an arm, a leg, and internal organs for a single outdated mini. They deserve to go bankrupt for their anticonsumer stupidity.
Glad you saw the light. I quit Star Wars legion because of bad rules and disney treating the brand so badly.
I looked at a ranking of best miniatures games where Malifaux came 4th. I liked the appeal of the game and I’m hooked. I’m playing mainly Guild, but i do dabble in most other factions.
KEYRING NEVERBORN: One of the best moments I've experienced was while playing with Euripides 2 against a Titania 1. On the last round we were Tied 4 - 4, on Raid the Vaults, but my opponent was controling a objetive on the centerline that would grant him another point. Only 2 activations left on my side, a Gigant and a Geryon and one on his side, the Hooded Rider, who was in control of that same objetive that would secure him a win. As a desperate atempt I activated my Gigant, moved him to be close to the Geryon and, with no masks to cheat I charged my Geryon in the hopes of fliping a tome... and so I did. My geryon was pushed to an Ice Pillar and was projected to another one on the other side of the map taking 2 points of damage, near the objetive and the feared hooded raider, who still had 7 HP left. My opponent activated his last model, the hooded Rider, his bonus action, moonlite charge fliped a black joker and after that I managed to win the 2 duels. At this point I tought I was going to Tie, witch was not bad. On my final activation I missed my first atack, but managed to tie the last one... So I was fliping damage with a total of 3 negative flips... The last card I fliped for damage was a red joker, Killing the hooded rider and scoring me another point. The game ended in my favour 6-5. It was a good game!
Please send us an email over to bang-average-gaming@outlook.com with your postage details. Apologies on the delay, took a bit to make a product we were happy with. but they're looking great now
@@bang-averagegaming Sorry about the delay. Will do it!
Malifaux is a wonderful game. Great to see it being promoted. Playing a game with eight models is so much more engaging than playing with 50 (where you usually measure one model's movement and then just bunch up the rest of the squad around them).
Malifaux has fantastic lore, incredibly imaginative models, and awesome support from the maker, Wyrd Games. Free rules, free app, and a really friendly community.
Ditch GW (or not, it's your choice), and support a company that doesn't nerf models within days of release or drain you with a cost for their yearly meta updates. You'll be glad you did.
Honestly if it weren't for some of the more fiddly model construction - and some not great instructions at times, there was a piece of one model I never figured out where it went but the model didn't look like it was missing anything so I didn't worry about it - I wouldn't have any problems with the game.
I don't see 40k and Malifaux as competitors. I always need to have an army game in my rotation along with one or more skirmish games.
@@tabletopandgaming you guys were a huge inspiration!
I played tournaments regularly in 2nd edition of Malifaux and played casually 2+ times a week for years the game had such a hold on me that Warhammer IPs wished they could, my fondest hobby memories come from Malifaux and definitely wish it was more popular because if you truly put the time into learning the mechanics and different masters gameplay felt super rewarding.
Shout out to the Outcast and Guild players y'all are the GOATs and RIP Collodi my community misses you everyday o7
@@tsyuukii we miss Collidi every day! Great Master with a unique style. Let's hope Lucius lets him out of his trophy room in the new future!
Cool
Now all you need is a playerbase within the continental U.S., maybe you can gather all 12 of them in one room someday!
Jokes aside, I absolutely friggin love those miniatures, it's a delightful thing to see.
The Other Side is also by Wyrd and uses the same deck of cards instead of dice. Its an army level game.
Yay, Malifaux content!
I clicked because i want to get my mates into malifaux and they are strugaling to be convinced to leave 40k
hopefully this helps!
Yo, this video is Fresh AF
What ive noticed about people in this hobby and especially content creators, if they harp on GW model price they arent a fun person to play (they havent made friends who just use proxies/resin prints etc) because the only time cost to play is an issue is when you have to play at official stores because no one invites you over to just play lol
It's a bit of an unfair comparison. Most of the things you mentioned, like escalating costs, amount of miniatures, difficult transport, long turns, etc. are the effect of Warhammer 40k being an army game, and Malifaux being a skirmish game. I'm interested how Malifaux compares to Kill Team, which also doesn't have any of the problems you mentioned with 40k, and at first glance even seems cheaper than Malifaux. Of course it all comes down to preference, and Malifaux has an awesome and unique aesthetic!
I was a Seamus player, and wasn't looking for friends. Deal.
Love the Faux
Yay malifaux
Started with warhammer, but where I'm from it basically costs an arm and a leg. Malifaux is also expensive, but much more manageable
+ the fact that all the rules and cards are free resources makes it so easy to proxy an army with a friend to see if you like the game before committing to get some models
I did the same with Battletech :)
Warhammer is a scam. Stopped buying it more than a decade ago. Delighted to see more people discovering every other miniatures companies that don’t manipulate and treat its fan base like bankrolling idiots.
40k has good books and minis but other than that ...ehhhh....
For me, 40k has a problem where a person can just buy a bunch of stupid strong models and roll a person off the board. You can try to position better on the board but then the person you're playing against uses technicalities to justify why bullets bend around a corner to hit everyone in a squad when one guy is barely clipped.
Malifaux has a small player base in the US. The model building can be annoying to build but they look so cool. Each crew has more personality than a 40k faction.
Thank you for this video.
@@marcfaucher5896 thanks for taking the time to watch! Hopefully it didn't come across as bashing 40k, you seem to understand the points I tried to make. Appreciate the support 👍🏻
@@bang-averagegaming No bashing came across you just had a lot of valid points on the two systems. Each game satisfies a different itch. The question that comes up is, is the itching 6-hour long battle or maybe 2 hours?
@DogseatDogs I'm looking forward to 3rd edition kill team. 1st was fun but 2nd had a lot of hide and seek shenanigans I didn't particularly like. The stealth vs active mechanic took the wind out of the sails in my opinion
back away from the mic when you speak, the constant thudding on hard letters is hard to sit through
I hate the playing card system it’s so dumb just give me dice or spell it out in actual card
Why?
2nd edition warhamer and Malifuax are the jam
