He's the only forward to ever average over 3 BPG not in one season but two! Also, the only player ever to finish a season top 4 in Blocks and Steals, as well as all the 5x5 games, 3 in total- 2nd only to Hakeem the Dream. Definitely one of the best defenders ever, with a combination of athleticism, anticipation, positioning, hustle, instinct, etc.

He wouldn't get as many blocks due to the current offensive style of the NBA. His switchability would be disgusting though and his playmaking and 3pt potential in today's game would be more valued. Guards are becoming bigger but wings and centers are becoming smaller and more fast twitch so 6'10" or taller forwards who can guard 4-5 positions like Jaden McDaniels, JJJ, vintage Ben Simmons, Gianni's, etc are so absurdly valued even compared to older eras.

    Hey Coach Nick. I think part of the issue is that the reddit post was not necessarily questioning JJJ's defensive ability, but the potential of betting and gambling being an explanation for why there may be "home cooking" of the stats. With the push and greater presence of gambling in pro sports these days, there's the potential of abuse leading to a gambling scandal. I don't know for sure and haven't done a deep dive, but it would be a valid concern.

      This! The push from all these bettings sites with ads and the rise of social media posts of earnings off bets, it’s a huge concern of mine for sports. I know it’s even getting players targeted by fans for not reaching certain over/unders and what not. It’s not a stretch by any means to think a stats keeper is gaining financially from something like this, considering the scandals we’ve had before involved officials.

    You mention that the steal vs Philly should have been awarded to Brooks, but here's how I think the scorerkeeper judged it: Yes, Brooks is obviously making the first deflection, but the ball is still in play due to Tobias Harris being in a similar position to pick it up as JJJ. Jaren then flicks the ball up in the air to take Tobias Harris out of the play, and then secures the position after the ball touches the floor. If Harris hadn't been in-play for the ball, I'm 100% sure Brooks would've been credited with the steal no matter if JJJ or he himself picks it up.
    I made the literal same points regarding the 7 plays ''in question'' on the original reddit thread, and even after several notable media-members have gone through ALL stocks in FedExForum, people are still messaging me saying that its fishy due to the discrepancy in home/away games.. Its incredible how much people want to believe in conspiracies. Its simply a statistical anomaly.

      It still leaves one question open. If the home/away splits are this extreme, are Memphis scheming differently home vs away? Has he been with different teammates in each subset of games?
      Or is this just an incredibly unlikely variance that will revert over time. That one is the easiest to test - just wait for the rest of the season to happen.
      I think it's real, but I'd be curious to find out if Memphis thinks there's something they do differently defensively (or offensively) on the road vs home (whether they mean to or not).

    • @pinobluevogel6458
      @pinobluevogel6458 Год назад +2

      @@blackjacktrial Apart from Home teams usually playing better at home (especially young teams, like the Grizzlies are) I think it is mostly a statistical anomaly. If anything, they might use JJJ more in specific situations to guard a certain player more, or flow out to the perimeter, instead of letting him roam more and get more blocks and steals.
      I watch all of the Pelicans games and Herb Jones (also a very good defender) always gets way less defensive stats if he's guarding the other team's best player. Not only is it usually harder to steal the ball from those guys, you can also not freely roam or jump passing lanes or hang around the nail (what Herb likes to do) as you are on that player all the time.

I observed this happening way often with assists where the scorer works his way to score and the passer is still credited for an assist. • @WinedandDined27
      @WinedandDined27 Год назад +3

      Adams isn’t necessarily a better defender than jjj (in fact, not at all) but what he has that makes his numbers so good is the intimidation factor. It’s the same reason Jjj numbers are so great on the road despite less stocks. Players are terrified of Adams, so they don’t even bother going into wherever he’s going out of fear of getting hurt. The way a lot of defensive metrics work is that if you’re on the floor and points aren’t getting scored wherever you are, you become a + defensively. In fact, I’d wager it’s jjj that helps Adams numbers, bc jjj is eeeeverywhere. He does all the heavy lifting in the paint defensively, so jjj stopping everything that comes into the paint coupled with Adams scaring players away due to his size and strength, it’s no wonder why Adams defensive numbers are so high.
      An exemplified version of this was when gobert won DPOY his last two years, his steals and blocks were lower than most centers, and especially lower than his early days. He was barely cooking anything tbh. It’s bc teams didn’t even bother to score in the paint when he was there, which made his defensive metrics off the charts. Same thing is happening w Adams bc of the fear he instills in offensive players (especially smaller ones)

    The one question I have here is on the interpretation of "controls his deflection". Simply batting the ball isn't really "controlling a deflection".
    The NBA rule book provides an example and states the following: On this play, #11 in blue, Monte Morris, is credited with the steal since he deflected the pass in a controlled manner away from the opponent (even though Morris did not control the ball).”
    The "controlled manner" part is key. In the first few examples of your video, JJJ didn't deflect the ball in a controlled manner.

    Brace yourselves, folks. Time for my Preventions metric to weigh in on the JJJ conspiracy. For those unfamiliar, it is a metric I created that deals with stats that don't show up on the box score by examining what the defensive act prevented: a full possession, an assist, or points. I've picked out three plays that I felt were interesting to me:
    2:03 - I thought Olynyk was going for a nutmeg. Jackson going behind Tillman for an unintentional defensive screen fooled Olynyk into thinking Vanderbilt was already at the rim for a dunk, when he was clearly not. The credit here would be "1 AST - 1 STL - Jackson,Tillman(H)," with Tillman getting a help credit for the "false screen."
    2:29 - Instead of figuring out who gets the block, I'd ask myself "who helped." In a Shot Block Prevention where two players are involved, the helper in the play is the teammate who bodies up the shooter as a deterrent, puts their arms up as a failsafe, or secures the ball after the block for a rebound. Clarke was the first to act on Lee's scoring attempt and assumed position; Lee acknowledged Clarke as his primary defender. But then Jackson gets his blocking hand up first before Clarke's, superseding Clarke's Prevention credit. This was a play that would have taken me more than 5 minutes to decide on the helper, and even slowing down the video to 25% speed produced a nearly inconclusive result. I'll side with the box score keepers and credit this as "1 DELAY - 1 BLK - Jackson,Clarke(H)." Why delay? This play was called out of bounds on Grizzlies; Suns retained possession.
    3:04 - This is a classic Assist-Steal, Jackson breaking up a pass that would have led to a Stewart corner 3, and an assist for Ivey had he not played defense. But instead, Jackson inadvertently saves the ball (and possession) back to Stewart. Baseball has a nifty stat called an Error to track down fielding mistakes that may result in more time for the batter, adding runners at base, or scoring unearned runs - this is one of those moments. Jackson would have had a "1 AST - 1 STL" credit, but for the purposes of my metric that credit is lost and is instead replaced with the "ERROR" label. Yep, even basketball makes mistakes.
    I was hoping to see a Shot Steal in this video, which is where a defender strips the ball away from the scorer before they can complete their shooting motion/attempt. Those are one of the rarest, if not one of my favorite types of defensive plays to analyze, but they weren't present here. Still, another nice video from Coach Nick that goes over plays that have a profound effect on the game, regardless of how invisible that one tally is.

    So what happens is, the nba checks every block and steal after the fact. And if a they find that one of the blocks was actually a foul, they’ll even take away the block retroactively. So he’s clearly deserving of his home blocks and steals, but here’s my thing. What about on the road? How do we know he’s not being shorted on blocks and steals during away games? The nba doesn’t go back to check uncredited plays, only credited ones. That would take way more effort to check out since you’d have to just rewatch all his minutes with that in mind but it seems it would be pretty easy to get away with. Seems to me that idea has more merit than that dumb Reddit one, especially when all the data + video is available to everyone.

    The first play was a foul, but I guess since they didn’t call it someone had to get credit for something. The second play I don’t see a deflection. Hard to see form that angle, but it looks like the ball was already passed jjj’s arm. The third play was a loose ball so the person who cleared possession should’ve gotten the steal. The fourth play should’ve been a block for the other dude as he clearly deflected the ball first. I don’t finish investigating the video, but there were clearly some home cooking happening here.

    I have a habit of watching every 3+ blocks, 3+ steals, 7+ offensive rebounds, 6+ turnovers, 15+ assists on NBA Advanced Stats play-by-play videos almost everyday. You can only see one angle of a play on that video that's why it's really hard to see who touched the ball. There's always questionable plays like when Jackson contested the shot and Bane got the steal, but it never happened twice a game to inflate his stats.
