That's great advice for people who can actually get interviews to begin with. What if you can't get to the interview stage because of lack of experience but you can still do the job if you had the chance?
Robert Ridley check the after show I did at 7 am this morning. That was the entire focus of that livestream. It’s trying to get hired without the job experience. Also, you can focus on my job searching playlist. Your search process is what generates interviews. Not your resume or schooling.
I'm a self-help junkie (ive read them all) and ive yet to come across someone who is remotely as generously helpful as you, Andrew. Wishing you a prosperous last half of 2019.
greypug THIS! THIS! This, my friend, is what I love see when I check my RUclips comments in the morning. Appreciate your attention and sharing this with me. Glad you are enjoying the stuff!
Oh my goodness! just came across this video since I'm in the interviewing process and I needed to hear this. This was right on time. I will be purchasing your book. Thank you so much!!!
Hi,Andy! I've bee drowning in self doubt this past few days, because I'm worried, if I got an Interview and I don't have a certain technical experience that they want, I'll fail miserably. I do have many job experiences but sometimes companies require specific technical set of skills which terrifies me when I got phone calls for interview. But your video gives me hope. I will tailored this concept on my own circumstances and hopefully it works! Thank you.
The same question came from the interviewer, I am extremely glad from the bottom of my heart, I watched your video how to answer that question. Whether I will get the job js not important, as I was clueless how to answer that until I saw your video how to frame the answer based on my experience. Thank you again
Hi Andrew, Thank you for this video! I've binged on youtube interview videos today. I'm interviewing for a job that I have no experience in tomorrow afternoon with a panel of two men and two women. Afterward, I am required to take some type of test. They haven't disclosed what will be on the test. I am incredibly nervous. I've been unemployed for over one year due to returning back to school. Please wish me luck. If I don’t get this job, then I know it's Gods way of protecting me from something that was not for me and that he has something better for me.
@@alyssa3815 Unfortunately I didn't get in but I did get an internship recently though. Although they didn't give me the job later because this was a co-op, I did pass an interview.
Agh...another video I wish I had watched sooner! Yesterday, I had an interview and one of the interviewers kept mentioning how I only have 5 years experience (five years is probably the minimum for this type of position). I reiterated how I'm confident in my abilities as a mature practitioner and my five years experience is solid. But I still don't think I handled it as well as I could. I didn't get defensive or anything but I didn't know how to handle it. Thanks again for your videos AL!!
Found out today I didn’t get the job. They went with a more experienced person. If that is the only deciding factor between two candidates, I suppose that’s what an employer has to do. Although more time in service doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be a better fit or better at their job, it’s a gamble on the employers part. I wish them luck. I have a good job currently, so I’ll keep building my skills where I’m at until the next opportunity comes along.
Make sure you're joining me here in a few minutes for #careersandcoffee to discuss this video a bit more! I'm on LIVE at 7 AM CDT: ruclips.net/video/zpOEDKGVcxA/видео.html. Hope you can make it!
Funny, I had this situation just yesterday in an interview. I did almost the same as Andy suggested, but maybe I took too much time instead of shifting the conversation fast to other topics.
I have been rejected 90 times by every video game companies out there.? I'm 45 years old well sometimes I don't know why I bother trying again because I will be disappointed in not getting hired. Just keep applying but I know I will never get the job because of no college degree.
Thank you for this tip, this is very helpful! I'm curious, what if you don't know what the software is? It may be hard to say you've work with something similar if you're not certain about the software they've asked.
I applied for 6 positions at Walmart. One being Asset Protection. And of all the positions I got an interview for Asset Protection. At first I was so nervous because I had to research what it was. I had no clue. I had a great interview and it went extra long. I got a call the next day and was told I didn’t get the job because one person had 4 years experience and it was a hard decision because I interviewed so well, and the manager said, they hadn’t had an interview like that in so long. I far exceeded their expectations. So he sent my resume to another Walmart 25 minutes from here and I could interview there and about 99% sure I’d get the job. Or they had a position where I applied for door person that paid quite a bit less. What would I like to do? He recommended the other position because of the pay, but it was up to me. I thanked him with heart felt gratitude and decided to go for the position I half hour from home . I never got a call and I called them and didn’t get a call back. I then called my local store to see about taking the less paying job and work my way up. Since we talked a lot about this during the first interview. I haven’t been able to get ahold of the manager since. It’s been about 2 1/2 weeks since the interview. Would a hiring manager just tell you that to make you feel good or did he mean it? I’m surprised that I still haven’t heard back. I’ve interviewed for a couple other companies, but realize they really were not for me and one I didn’t qualify for. So my main question is with no experience as Asset Protection I got the interview and all other positions I do have experience and got no call. Also the fact that he raved about how well I interview and that I should walk out of most places I interview with having a job very quickly!! He and a female manager were the interviewers . It almost felt like family right away. Why does this happen and do they tell you things just to say it??? I’m confused!! Thank you for any help. And I apologize for a repetitive comment. 😊
Hi Kelly. I have been a hiring manager myself and have produced these seemingly irrational results for some of my interviewees. Let me explain. There are many things going on in the hiring process and many people participating and having power over the process. When you hire you may have pressures related to a specific project and then some ability is a must have even if the candidate is otherwise so-so. Ideally you are not so pressured and you can apply Andy's recommendation which is to hire more on character ("traits") than on skills ("trade"). And then of course you may have one opening with dozens of applicants and another opening with very few applicants. And you may have your boss asking you to hire fast one position and delay the hiring of another position because of budget or project dependencies or what not. [And yes, there is the possibility that the hiring manager didn't want to provide candid feedback.] So with all these unknowns trying to second guess the process is not very productive.
Pablo Straub Thank you very much for your input and thoughts on what may have happened. I am not dwelling on it, but was curious if they actually offer you another job on the spot that pays less and asks if you’d travel. But then continue to uplift you regarding your interview. And I have normally always been good at interviews and first impressions. But being older now, it made me wonder if they just tell you that to make you feel good. Again thank you for sharing your thoughts. 😊
rocky mountain lass What a frustrating situation and huge disappointment to be so far in the process and pretty much know you’ve got the job if not worried about background or drug screen. I always knew when I walked in and met the hiring person that I had it or pretty much had the job. So sounds like you pretty much knew also.. Gosh that just seems so wrong on many levels. I really hope you got something you like and wanted even more!! Bless your heart!!! And thank you for sharing your story that’s similar to mine. You just got put through the ringer a lot more! You’re a trooper that’s for sure! 😊
rocky mountain lass and I agree that possibly with some jobs the younger one get it. Geepers I was being interviewed as a 55 year old woman for a job the kept saying is dangerous. Which it can be. I kind of think older people need to be themselves but add a little spice to how we carry ourselves and relay our confidence to the interviewer... 😊
