Those locomotives apart from the NG15 2-8-2 Mikado, were designed & called Garratts after the locomotive designer, Herbert William Garratt. The Garratts are articulated steam engines designed to haul heavy freight around tight bends on the tracks. Those strange things at the front & back of the steam engines are bogie units, the front carries the water & the back carries the fuel like coal or oil.
