As someone who has watched 500+ anime i can tell u two things: dont listen to the bad mouths that hate on everything and enjoy my favourite anime. Ill be waiting for your reactions
Yes this episode was brutal but it sets up the rest of the story really well. Giyu (the demon slayer) held back in that fight because he wanted to see how Tanjiro would react only to see Nezuko protect him. Nezuko is the oldest sister, Tanjiro is about a year older than her and the oldest of the 6. Not going to say much more on the first episode but there are post credits starting from the next episode similar to a Juju stroll and looking forward to the rewatch with you.
Haters call this anime mediocre or even doesn't have a good story. BUT no other anime does captivate and sucks us in IN THE PILOT EPISODE. It's not just animation, OST and Voice actors really did a great job on this.
@@t_Error-50420 Finally somebody who understand it. Demons are not attracted by blood and flesh Vampire are. Demons can move in daylight since they were on this world before us humans. Vampire cant. All this anime show are vampires who call themself demons. literally I mean muzan uses his blood to transform other humans and only some can survive that? Men thats literally vampires.
I must say, once i got to episode 5 i was like, wait a minute, blood powers? Burning soon? The urge for human blood......is...are the demons actually vampires and the i had an internal conversation with myself about this subject. I've come to the conclusion that demon slayer sound cooler than vampire slayer and that's why they are called demons
The OST is a collaboration between Yuki Kajiura, a legend among anime composers, and Go Shiina, who is less well known but genuinely one of my all time favorite composers. Of course it's incredible.
Real world historical context: The series is set in the Taisho era of Japan. Somewhere between 1912 and 1926. Japan had an interesting history of strict isolationism, so when western technologies came to Japan it came a lot more sudden than Europe's gradual development. So you get a lot of ancient Japanese culture, traditions, art and architecture contrasting seemingly anachronistic with 19th century western innovations. I don't know as much as I should about this, but it's a strange atmosphere that's actually historically accurate. Radio, for comparison, was invented in 1909. The lightbulb was invented 30 nearly years earlier than that again. There are people alive today that predate the Taisho era actually. Glad you're reacting to this. Ever since your Overlord comment about not caring about animation, I've wanted you to see this so you'd eat your words and become a sakuga snob like the rest of us weebs. ;-P Enjoy the ride!
I think it is important to undeerstand that for most people, demons still count as superstition. They _are_ real in the show, but this show is more or less set in the real world, and most people would say "bah, demons aren't real, they're fairy tales, or old stories" and even those that believe aren't like to run into any on a daily basis.
So happy you finally react to it! This anime's pilot is a crazy good episode. The writing of Demon Slayer is sometimes abrupt but the anime just beautified 100x the manga version. The OST is so beautiful emotional, the voice acting. People complain about demon slayer because the story is sometimes too straightforward and characters are averagely well written but something that makes everyone agree is that the execution of this anime is OUT OF THIS WOLRD. It's just a pure masterpiece of animation and just for that it worth the watch + while being straightforward the story is still good, enjoyable and captivating so you'll not get bored watching it. Your reaction reminded me some years ago when I was watching this episode for the first time after a hard week I've been through between disappointment and sickness. And fun fact I had been througg the same kind of weeks (and it didn't happen in a very long time) and now I re-go through this episode through your reaction. It made me have the same reaction: not crying but a bit teary eyes. After this, last time, everything was getting better and better for me so I hope it will be even better for me this time too.
Luke: "I'm curious about this sister/brother relationship and where this goes." Me, experiencing anime PTSD: "Wait, did Japan have toothbrushes in the Taisho era?!?"
@@ChaWataNo, I was just making a reference to a certain Nisemonogatari episode. I admit that I didn't know when toothbrushes became widely available in Japan, but I also didn't know when they became widely available in the US either (turns out it was the end of the 19th century).
7:14 Demon Slayer takes place between 1912/1926 from what I found when researching, so at that time there was already electricity in some areas of Japan, it's still old times as it wasn't something common in Japan at the time. I'm here to warn you that I only did some research to clarify Luke's doubts, so there may be something wrong with this, if so, please add useful information that doesn't contain spoilers.
Tanjiro is one year older than Nezuka, he's 13 she's 12 (At the beginning of the series) if she looks slightly older that's just because girls start puberty sooner than boys.
If girls start their puberty sooner then boys is old fashioned It depend on your genes. I know americans dosnt learn anything logical But stop spreading facts that got proofn down 30 years ago. Google it up your gender dosnt decide when you go to puberty.
Demon Slayer along with JJK are the 2 most recent hits in the genre known as "battle shonen". Dragonball was the first modern "battle shonen" and all of the shows you had heard of before you started watching anime fall into that genre with the possible exception of Attack on Titan (which is kinda its own thing). The world's and premise vary quite a bit in battle shonen, but all tend to follow a young main character coming of age as they fight battles and go on a Journey/Adventure of some sort, and are often far darker than traditional western stories of this kind
Technically the first battle shonen series in the modern sense of the world was Kinnikuman The series started as a superhero parody, but then began to incorporate elements of sports anime (especialy pro-wrestling), and thus introduced the majority of the tropes associated with the genera today
@@Dr.Mlieko Not sure if I really consider kinnukuman to be in the same genre as the others, partly cause its so focused on being a sports/ parody show, and also because it never reached anywhere close to the level of international success that Dragonball/Sailor Moon/Naruto/ AOT/ Demon Slayer did. Fist of the North Star seems closer in concept (though other than the opening theme might be even less known internationally than Kinnikuman), But Dragonball is still the first show that puts all the pieces together for the modern "Battle shonen"/ Adventure story that everyone else copied the general pattern of.
@@flyingeagle3898 Popularity does not really determine whether or not something is part of a genera or not Also, ironically, Fist of the North Star has less of the traditional battle shonen tropes than Kinnikuman Kenshiro already starts out basically unstoppable and he does not really grow stronger throughout the series, and rarely ever learns anew technique It is certainly a martial arts series, but a battle shonen series does not need to be about martial arts (as we saw over the decades, magic, psychic powers, or just regular guns can also qualify) Also also, Akira Toriyama has himself admitted that when making Dragon Ball, outside of Journey to the West and Jacke Chan movies, his main inspiration were sports anime (specifically the martial arts ones), as sports at the time were the one genera that focused on the protagonists gradual growth (it is also where the concept of tournament arcs got its roots) And speaking of which, being a parody does not disqualify a series either, as Dragon Ball itself started as a not even subtle parody of Journey to the West (JttW may not be as famous in the west, but pretty much everyone in East Asia knows it by heart)
@@Dr.Mlieko parodies and gags may have been where Toiyama started and where he got a significant source of inspiration(same with sports shows). But that is not where dragonball went once it got going, and it was certainly not those elements that all the big ones that followed copied. YuYu Hakasho, HunterxHunter, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, MHA, Black Clover, Demon slayer, and JJK all share a lot of elements with one another and with Dragonball that they simply do not with earlier series

7:12 the anime is set during the early Taisho era, so after 1912 but before 1926. So, round the end of the Edwardian era. Industrialisation was happening in Japan at the time after being isolated for 300 years and technology was rapidly advancing, but smaller towns were still pretty basic when it came to machinery or electricity even.
Now that you've seen Fate, you know what Ufotable is capable of, but let me just tell you this. From ep 1 to the current season that is out right now, they have not slacked off for even a bit. This Demon Slayer journey will be a spectacle.
I think the time period is Japan between the two world wars - just cause you were asking about technology yet old school feel. Also, yeah a heavy start, but I personally think the show eventually gets to a vibe similar to that of JJK with the mix of tragic, action, and funny lol
Demon Slayer.. let's go! I saw the episode 1 reaction i think a few months ago when you were "touring" a lot of them for the 1st episode, but why not see it again? lol
21:48 and that’s when i started crying when i first watched this. it’s kinda funny, i didn’t even realize until a few moments later when my cousin had gotten my attention to show me something he was doing in a game. i was like “hold on gimme a sec” and took off my glasses to wipe my tears and froze like: “🥲…😐🫢…😭” cause i rarely ever cry to anything fictional 😆
oh my god! i didn’t even notice you watched this! so excited to join you on your journey through this series! it’s such an amazing story, i think you’ll love it. also if you were curious, in (i believe, it’s been a while since i’ve watched it) the first two episodes and about half of the 3rd one, tanjirou is 13 and nezuko is 12. i don’t really remember the rest of the kids ages, but i believe rokuta, the youngest is between the ages 4 to 6. as far as i remember, tanjuro, their dad, had died a couple months to a year or two prior to the start of the series 👍
1:10 demon slayer had an interesting jump into mainstream success because it was actually under the radar until the anime released, it wasnt as popular initially as a manga as its art had much to be desired and the artstyle wasnt something people were use to either while the story was rather basic in terms of premise resulting in something most people was wondering how it managed to stay afloat yet once the anime release with Lisa’s vocals for the opening and ufotable delivering action sequences utilizing traditional ukiyo-e in 3D which is actually faithful to the manga turning its disadvantage into an advantage is when it all came together 4:39 as others have pointed out this is in the taisho era so quite frankly it’s roughly 100 years ago in the middle of the westernization of japan in the winter on a mountain where hes hiking up and down it, its very dangerous and tiresome in general like can you make a days trip carrying a large basket of coal filled to the brim up and down a mountain while while covered in multiple layers of cloth and fabrics for warmth 16:43 yeah its a bit of an odd thing but tanjiro has an extremely good sense of smell, its a plot point too 23:21 in a sense yes, it may not seem like it but tanjiro is partially blaming himself for not being there with them when they were massacred regardless of whether he couldve realistically done anything about it or not and his action can be taken as self serving to alleviate his guilt so what is being said to him does make sense and as you can see afterward hes actually trying to rile him up to see if he really does have the drive and ambition to go down a certain path
It was literally on Oricon's Top 50 Yearly Chart from 2017-2018 selling over a million copies per year and was the 3rd most popular manga in its magazine (WSJ) at the time. The idea that it was "underground" or "not very popular" pre-anime is flat out just wrong and revisionist lol.
@@InvisibleTacoMan i never said it was “underground” or even “not very popular” but that it “wasnt as popular” there is a huge difference between comparing soemthing’s past and current popularity and something lacking in popularity
@@YukiFubuki. I wasn’t responding to you saying it wasn’t as popular (Virtually no manga to begin with is as popular pre-anime compared to post-anime anyway), but the fact that you said it was “under the radar.” It was VERY successful prior to the anime’s release, as I’ve substantiated. Also, my bad for not specifying, but I was quoting things people typically say about it, not saying you said those things exactly.
YES It's finally here! Man, it's great to rewatch this along with you.And your reaction at 13:58 was basically all of us when we first watched it, I'm sure. It was my reaction alright. This show is easily among my top 5 favorite Anime ever, can't wait to see your reaction to the rest.
This first episode is intense, and there are other intense ones, but there’s also a lot of humor and amazing things in this show. So glad you started it!
There's a segment at the end of most episodes, but it's put right after the Ending that shows future characters, so it'll be hard to catch it without getting a bit spoiled. Maybe someone can provide you the isolated segments, but it'd probably be inconvenient to have to record your reaction separately.
Luke, you need to get out of Overlord mode. Demon Slayer has plot twists…but the author does not go out of her way to hide information or gaslight. Demon Slayer will simply…with every backstory…for good guys and bad guys…destroy you emotionally.
The exact time period of this show is never stated, but we can infer from a few clues we get early on that it takes place sometime around the mid to late 1910s, hence the power cables in the more urban areas.
Demon Slayer has something that many anime hardly have anymore. There are many small moments with their wonderful music that have made this work so great. There are also more and more funny moments through the addition of other characters.
The colour shade on the first episode is still my favourite, by this point it feels like it was specifically made for it, and so it increases the feeling of nostalgia
OMG so on saturdays we will have demon slayer + vinland saga, what an amazing period to be your follower Luke! So glad to follow your journey into animes world since this AOT OPs reaction ❤️

The time period is actually really interesting becasue it is set in the Taisho period, somewhere ebtween 1912 and 1926. It is really cool because that is pretty much Japans industrial revolution time after WWI. That is why you see most of the rural parts being still very traditional, but the cities and bigger towns start to have electricity and such.
After Attack on titen I'm honest...something was missing on this channel for me but now I'm back here :D I really just love your vibe and the fact that you feel the story there
4 years? He started reacting to anime only 1 and a half years back and 4 years back it wasn't even a reaction channel it was a very small gaming channel.
In Japan there are eras based on the current reigning emperor, this is in the Taisho era which was between 1912 and 1926 so this is early 20th century. That's why there's a bit of a mix of old and new.
Just for reference, the date is 1912 out in the boonies of Japan. It is all fairly realistic on the tech side, at this time Japanese communities and communities in general were much more tightly knit than modern communities largely because there was no real communication tech to let you socialize with people further away so you would spend that time socializing with those around you.

@@RecePuff WW1 was 1914-1918, 20th century, remember that there was no 0 century, so year 1 was 1st century, and year 101 was 2nd century.
As someone who has watched 500+ anime i can tell u two things:
dont listen to the bad mouths that hate on everything and enjoy my favourite anime. Ill be waiting for your reactions
This is an example of an anime that carries the manga because of how well they did it.
Perfectly described lol
because manga is much worse. One battle for four chapters makes gun trigger look seductive
ufotable hard carried Demon Slayer.
@@s.novozhilov1856 Just cause ufotable served up a God tier adaptation. Doesn't mean the manga was that bad. It was still fairly popular for a reason
@@stratpunk8402 it was popular due to the anime. Everyone wanted to see what happened next instead of waiting on next seasons.
Thank you for the heads up! ❤️
The death flags were so obvious even Luke couldn't believe them. I love this anime, can't wait for the next episode 💜
Haters call this anime mediocre or even doesn't have a good story. BUT no other anime does captivate and sucks us in IN THE PILOT EPISODE. It's not just animation, OST and Voice actors really did a great job on this.
BTW Demon Slayer is animated by Ufotable. They animated the Fate Series namely. UBW, Zero and Heavens Feel
👀
Show is called Demon slayer
Luke: is she a vampire?
To be honest, not thinking about the title and just seeing her teeth, vampire would be my first guess too.
to be honest they are similar to the modern lore of vampires rather than demons, its literally just a name they refer to them by.
👀
@@t_Error-50420 Finally somebody who understand it.
Demons are not attracted by blood and flesh
Vampire are.
Demons can move in daylight since they were on this world before us humans.
Vampire cant.
All this anime show are vampires who call themself demons.
literally
I mean muzan uses his blood to transform other humans and only some can survive that?
Men thats literally vampires.
I must say, once i got to episode 5 i was like, wait a minute, blood powers? Burning soon? The urge for human blood......is...are the demons actually vampires and the i had an internal conversation with myself about this subject. I've come to the conclusion that demon slayer sound cooler than vampire slayer and that's why they are called demons
Dude, I literally screamed when I saw this video. Demon Slayer is my favorite anime, it's so good. You're going to love it.
Overhated (for no good reasons) and an underrated show.
The OST is a collaboration between Yuki Kajiura, a legend among anime composers, and Go Shiina, who is less well known but genuinely one of my all time favorite composers. Of course it's incredible.
Real world historical context:
The series is set in the Taisho era of Japan.
Ufotable studio + Yuki Kajiura as the music director is a match made in heaven. Good luck on the Demon Slayer journey!
I think it is important to undeerstand that for most people, demons still count as superstition. They _are_ real in the show, but this show is more or less set in the real world, and most people would say "bah, demons aren't real, they're fairy tales, or old stories" and even those that believe aren't like to run into any on a daily basis.
Welcome to Demon Slayer. Enjoy the spectacle
🫡
The VA for tanjiro also voiced falco in AOT!
Thats insane wtf
Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul
12:48 You can see the exact moment when Luke realized the kind of story this is...
I had* been through
The composer of the music is Yuki Kajiura, the same composer who did the music for Madoka Magica!
Couldn't click this video any faster! So excited for your reactions to this series! One of my favorite Manga Series and seeing you react to the anime!
Luke: "I'm curious about this sister/brother relationship and where this goes."
Me, experiencing anime PTSD: "Wait, did Japan have toothbrushes in the Taisho era?!?"
Calm down bro😂
日本を馬鹿にしているのか?400年以上前から庶民が使うくらい普及していた
@@ChaWataNo, I was just making a reference to a certain Nisemonogatari episode.
I admit that I didn't know when toothbrushes became widely available in Japan, but I also didn't know when they became widely available in the US either (turns out it was the end of the 19th century).

The anime takes place in Taishō Period (1912 - 1926).
If girls start their puberty sooner then boys is old fashioned
It depend on your genes.
I know americans dosnt learn anything logical
But stop spreading facts that got proofn down 30 years ago.
Google it up your gender dosnt decide when you go to puberty.
The story took place in Taisho era in Japan. I've just googled and it said this era started from July 30th,1912 to December 25th, 1926
Technically the first battle shonen series in the modern sense of the world was Kinnikuman
The series started as a superhero parody, but then began to incorporate elements of sports anime (especialy pro-wrestling), and thus introduced the majority of the tropes associated with the genera today
@@flyingeagle3898 Popularity does not really determine whether or not something is part of a genera or not
Also, ironically, Fist of the North Star has less of the traditional battle shonen tropes than Kinnikuman
Kenshiro already starts out basically unstoppable and he does not really grow stronger throughout the series, and rarely ever learns anew technique
It is certainly a martial arts series, but a battle shonen series does not need to be about martial arts (as we saw over the decades, magic, psychic powers, or just regular guns can also qualify)
Also also, Akira Toriyama has himself admitted that when making Dragon Ball, outside of Journey to the West and Jacke Chan movies, his main inspiration were sports anime (specifically the martial arts ones), as sports at the time were the one genera that focused on the protagonists gradual growth (it is also where the concept of tournament arcs got its roots)
And speaking of which, being a parody does not disqualify a series either, as Dragon Ball itself started as a not even subtle parody of Journey to the West
(JttW may not be as famous in the west, but pretty much everyone in East Asia knows it by heart)
@@flyingeagle3898 The point is, Kinnikuman was still the first series to use the formula
“The music is beautiful” oh just you wait
Kamado Tanjiro No Uta....
OMG, so excited you’re finally watching Demon Slayer! I’ve been waiting for you to react to this since I started following you. You’re going to love the OST/music in this series, it’s amazing! VERY emotional anime too, get yourself prepared for all the feels. 😭🤧❤️🔥
omg i get teary and get goosebumps every time i rewatch that first scene T.T
Yuuki Kajira is such a good composer. Her sound tracks are always so recognizable.
Demon Slayer.. let's go! I saw the episode 1 reaction i think a few months ago when you were "touring" a lot of them for the 1st episode, but why not see it again? lol
YEEESSSSS FINALLY!!!!! Ah man, I've been waiting for you to start Demon Slayer for so long!! Let's gooooo!!
Oh man finally! This anime stands out in everything, you will love the story and each character, believe me. I'm excited !!
story? not so much..lol
sound and graphics? Yes
@@mariansony91 story is great wdym
1:10 demon slayer had an interesting jump into mainstream success because it was actually under the radar until the anime released, it wasnt as popular initially as a manga as its art had much to be desired and the artstyle wasnt something people were use to either while the story was rather basic in terms of premise resulting in something most people was wondering how it managed to stay afloat yet once the anime release with Lisa’s vocals for the opening and ufotable delivering action sequences utilizing traditional ukiyo-e in 3D which is actually faithful to the manga turning its disadvantage into an advantage is when it all came together
4:39 as others have pointed out this is in the taisho era so quite frankly it’s roughly 100 years ago in the middle of the westernization of japan in the winter on a mountain where hes hiking up and down it, its very dangerous and tiresome in general
like can you make a days trip carrying a large basket of coal filled to the brim up and down a mountain while while covered in multiple layers of cloth and fabrics for warmth
16:43 yeah its a bit of an odd thing but tanjiro has an extremely good sense of smell, its a plot point too
23:21 in a sense yes, it may not seem like it but tanjiro is partially blaming himself for not being there with them when they were massacred regardless of whether he couldve realistically done anything about it or not and his action can be taken as self serving to alleviate his guilt so what is being said to him does make sense and as you can see afterward hes actually trying to rile him up to see if he really does have the drive and ambition to go down a certain path
That's not true. The manga was popular beforehand and was extremely well received
@@InvisibleTacoMan i never said it was “underground” or even “not very popular” but that it “wasnt as popular”
there is a huge difference between comparing soemthing’s past and current popularity and something lacking in popularity

I find it so weird that so many people complain about this show i personally think its great.
There's a segment at the end of most episodes, but it's put right after the Ending that shows future characters, so it'll be hard to catch it without getting a bit spoiled.
Maybe someone can provide you the isolated segments, but it'd probably be inconvenient to have to record your reaction separately.
7:22 demon slayer is definitely a little more old school. It’s year is roughly 1912-1926
I didn't tear up the first time I watched this but now I see how emotional this first episode was
Maybe because now you are emotionally connected to the characters that's why.
Demon Slayer has something that many anime hardly have anymore. There are many small moments with their wonderful music that have made this work so great. There are also more and more funny moments through the addition of other characters.
Hey, in my opinion your the best anime reactor so far :) keep it up pls!!!!
Since you've talked about attention to details and how beautiful the art style is. The studio that made this anime is ufotable - Fate: Unlimited Blade Works, and Fate: Heaven's Feel.

Everyone loves Nezuko.
First Fullmetal alchemist, now this, something about two siblings trying to get their humanity back just works so well as a story
I am so so excited to see this Journey unfold
Nezuko is my favorite character. And I know you probably recognize the opening since you have seen it before it was a song by LiSA and totally the OST is amazing. The pacing for the first episode definitely shows you the tone of how its going to be throughout the series. Enjoyed your reactions and looking forward to the next one!

"Heavy opening" Bro needs to watch Parasyte FR LMAOO
So I can only say wow.😮 I've never watched you before and only clicked on the video because of Demonslayer, but god that was a really good video, you have a new subscriber. I hope to see more of these videos.
At the end are Taisho Era secrets. You can check them out. They are giving some Easter Eggs about characters.😆Great reaction.😃
“demon slayer character backstories are so boring” when 90% of then have the most traumatizing backstories
About damn time you started this. I watched you react to all of the openings, but always wondered when you were going to start actually watching the anime. I'm here to stay for your reaction to them.
When you commented about his hands being cold, and asking what he was doing with his hands, he was actually praying over his families graves.
God... the OST of demon slayer is just something else. I'm waiting for you to react to THIS episode. We all know which episode I mean
After Attack on titen I'm honest...something was missing on this channel for me but now I'm back here :D
I really just love your vibe and the fact that you feel the story there

Finally for over 4 years of waiting Luke to react to Demon slayer, it's finally here, glad Luke becomes the corps journey
❤
4 years? He started reacting to anime only 1 and a half years back and 4 years back it wasn't even a reaction channel it was a very small gaming channel.
In Japan there are eras based on the current reigning emperor, this is in the Taisho era which was between 1912 and 1926 so this is early 20th century. That's why there's a bit of a mix of old and new.
finally after so long demon slayer is here❤
Soundtrack in DEmon Slayer is definitely one of the best ones
Same studio Ufotable that also made our beloved fate anime so no doubts in the animation department for this anime
Ok, now you’re talking, after watching AOT and now this one you got a new sub man, hellous from El Salvador 🫡🇸🇻
