We'd all be out of our comfort zones with Guthrie and John watching us improvise. ;)

I was here that night that was the jam session in New York at glen cove, they had his guitar way down to where you could hardly hear it. The video you are hearing is a direct recording of all the instruments mixed direct, but live you could hardly hear his guitar and I doubt he could hear it

lol this is like throwing a rock drummer into a jazz gig and expecting him to rip... this classic style of metal is not comparable to his style of finger thumping and 8 string guitars

He is not an improviser, self admitted. I don't even know why he agreed to go in the first place haha he is not like the other guys up there, he wasn't taught pentatonic satriani vai whatever. A jazz player doing everything but blues apparently pretty funny and interesting at the same time.

I must be deaf, but I've never understood all the fuss about him tbh.

this is terrible....abasi is making my ears bleed...how can he not figure out the changes in this simple tune?? Graduates from berklee, but cannot solo over a simple vamp.

Heres the thing, hes not playing what he hears in his head, hes playing the shapes he sees.

      He didn’t graduate from berklee

@@gabimeredith1 oops my bad....according to wikipedia, he taught there, which is even more mystifying....this is basic diatonic harmony here....these jams are meant to be within the realm of playability of all concerned...the fact that he cannot figure it out is really shocking to me. You can see the look of confusion and consternation on the other players' faces....it is an utter trainwreck of a solo from start to finish.

@@elitejams i think the issue is mainly 1.) he just isnt very focused on improvisation, he's stated composition and technique were what he spent most of his practice time on when he was younger and 2.) he is trying to be too next level with his harmonic choices and phrases. He's not playing the changes in the traditional way because hes trying to do all these symmetrical and augmented sounds, which just don't sound as good as playing like phyrgian dominant and minor over the whole thing like a "simpler" player would in this context. I feel like if he simplified his scalar and harmonic choices he would actually probably play a better solo

@@gabimeredith1 hmmm....i dunno....i get playing outside a bit, but here u can clearly see and hear that he is not confident in what he is throwing down. That tells me that the tonality of the vamp is eluding him...none of what he is playing has any harmonic relevance to the riff. I saw him jam on a minor blues," the thrill is gone," i think it was, and it was the same story....he was lost...when a guy goes on stage at one of these camps as one of the instructors, it seems to me that he should have his shit together enough not to sound this bad. Not trying to bag on Tosin...i have nothing against the dude....and i get that maybe some aspects of traditional rock and blues playing may not be in his wheelhouse, but this is a pretty standard vamp and he just sounded totally amateur.
