In my view, what separates Guthrie is that while there are many technical guitarists who can do amazing things with scripted, highly practiced lines, he can bang out insane chops almost without thinking. He's a stream of musical consciousness!
In mine is his hair....."Stream of counsciouness" is a DT song and it sounds better than Govan's entire career for me. But, yeah, wtf, he is very talented...
I don't mean to shit on your point but scales and improvisational solos are one of the first things lead players learn. Pretty much any guitarist learns to improvise musical solos after a while. What separates Guthrie IS the breadth of technical playing he has mastered. I'd argue his improvisational guitar playing is kind of rambling, on musical merit, but insanely technical and some of the runs are things it would take months for advanced players to learn to do once - and he can pull them out off the cuff.
Amazing how many people know how Guthrie plays without much thought?! Guy was practicing and learning, but he clearly has an edge over others. His techniques i more refined.

Phenomenal. Those bends are right on pitch and seem to come from nowhere. It’s just like he has the composer’s perfectly written score running through his head - yet he’s improvising the exact notes!
This is probably the best guitar solo I've EVER heard. Some of these licks actually brought tears to my eyes - along with an ear-to-ear, cheek-cramping smile!

I agree, and this is hard to do, because aesthetically you gotta feel the music (rhythm, mood, etc), then technically you gotta also understand how it's done (scale, modes etc, or simply use pentatonic is alright IMO, it's a tool as well), then physically you gotta have that stamina to endure multiple bends or shreds or whatever you're trying to do aesthetically and technically (I saw this video of Jason Richardson saying he gotta practice every day because the shreds he does demands stamina and endurance for doing it so long in minutes non stop).
