      For Tosin, it will boil down to what makes him happy and inspired to play. If he's "feeling it", the audience will feel it even if they don't know nor care whether he's using a modeler or real amps. Thanks for watching, appreciate it.

    Couldn't agree more. I love running my Kemper stereo and a couple Half Stacks. Friedman smallbox and a JCM800. The sound surrounds you and has beautiful clarity along with dual stereo fx and cleans up great with the volume knob on the guitar. It's amazing. After that, either one alone is uninspiring.

    The soundman can take a DI from the back of my amp if they want to. That way I can use an atenuator to get my own monitor volume using a 4x12, 2x12 or 1x12 depending on the venue.

    He was using Morgans for a long time before we went to Badcat. Hybrid is the way to go. Modelling is only missing the poweramp response when playing live for me. I modeled my preamp with the quad cortex and feed it back to the effects return of my badcat. I can have a bunch of different amp settings on the cortex foot switches and I have one cable run to my amp. I can do pre and post effects however I want with one cable. If I want to run direct to FOH I have another preset of the fully profiled amp and speaker. I can also do both at the same time. It’s a great time to play guitar.

    I'm in the middle of this where I have a Quilter 200 watt (analog solid state) Aviator Mach 3 head in Plexi cleanish mode and I get my distortion and modulations through pedals. It can be as loud as a JCM 800. I think IRs are a different animal. They sound equally as good as cabinets in a record mix but they don't push air like a live cab does I guess.

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  6 месяцев назад +1

      Indeed, my opinion is that in a recording situation, it would be very hard to tell the difference between a mic'ed up speaker cab and an IR with the same mic and speaker cab. Sit in a room with a real amp and cab or stand on a stage with an amp pushing air, and IR playing through a speaker wedge is not the same.

    Do you feel using an axe fx or analog pedals is better for effects? JW

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  Год назад +1

      Great question. I’ve never used an Axe Fx, but I’ve heard from many that it’s effects are killer. Personally I use a Kurzweil KSP8 for post effects. I love it. In front of the amp I use a TC Plethora X3. If I want an accurate tape delay, I’d use a pedal, the Strymon El Capistan. But I’m sure the axe Fx and others can come pretty close. It depends on the intent and what is trying to be accomplished. Hey thanks for watching, appreciate it 🙏

    He just wants to be the one keep the tube amp alive. He can and has gotten his sound from his plug-in or axe fx. But the tactical feel of pedalboards into a tube amps can’t be beat. It’s just much more simple and doesn’t hinder creativity. Axe fx and plugins are just a lot more complicated so you always have to have a hand near a mouse. That’s where I’m at.

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  Год назад +1

      Yup, I personally don't like spending a lot of time mousing/trackpading around in order to dial in tone. Volume, weight, and tube replacement are issues with real tube amps. But plugins and digital boxes like Axe FX have their own set of issues. Just look at forums and you'll see tons of people fighting with software, OS compatibility, drivers, gain staging etc.

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  Год назад +1

      @@r0bophonicGood question, I don’t know how that relationship started. Hard to say whether he gets the amps for free. Some companies, like Mesa Boogie, make the artists buy their gear.

      @@SaintLuminus He has a ton of money. He drives a supercar. Same with Misha from Periphery. They can basically do whatever they want nowadays. Also, this tour was with Dream Theater and was in huge sitting-only venues, like theaters. So, it's a high budget tour with huge stages. They could do basically whatever they wanted to do.
      Although, I have to say, AAL had the worst sound quality live of the 3 bands on this tour when I went to the stop in Clearwater, FL recently. Tosin's guitar tone was good, but the band as a whole sounded really muddy. Tons of bass, way too natural sounding drums.... just not very good. Devin Townsend and Dream Theater sounded way, way more polished. I've seen AAL live before a few years ago at a different venue, and they had much better sound. Not saying this has anything to do with Tosin using real amps though. I don't think that's the case. Just bad overall live sound mix.

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  Год назад

      @@justsomerandomguyman Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately we as the audience are at the mercy of the FOH engineers. Unless we are standing on the stage or at the very foot of the stage, our perception of tone comes from the FOH. Oh Hell, even the tones I've dialed in during rehearsals don't come across correctly on different stages.

    The Axe-FX is pretty much irrelevant in terms of guitar tone now (still great in terms of effects though). The Kemper was already better than the Axe-FX for the last decade, but even the Kemper is somewhat obsolete now. The new wave of amp profilers, IK Multimedia Tonex and the open source NAM, are just flat out more accurate than anything that came before them when it comes to just getting a really good profile of an amp for recording, especially if you are just capturing only the amp head directly and running it into IRs separately. Also, you can always use one of those direct amp profiles in the Tonex pedal and run it into a real poweramp and cab. That's probably the best in terms of convenience for live use.
    Many engineers/mixers/producers nowadays keep real amps on hand and capture profiles of them along with IRs for the sake of consistency and recalling exact tones easily during the recording process. I think this is the best and most flexible modern approach. Tube amps definitely still have their place for recording, even if it's only for the profiling stage. For live, that comes down to the circumstances of the artist and tour and whether or not they can easily swing having real amps (often not very easy to do when traveling to certain places).

      I was thinking about it last night while I was getting live performance tones dialed in. We live in such an amazing time as guitar players with a plethora of choices. And they all sound good, this is much different than 20 years ago when I was using a Line 6 POD. lol
