Also a few more things: the collar that Sugar gives you while I dont know how much it boosts each stat, it gives permanent health regen to Jozlyn making it the best collar in the game by a long shot.
I played HOME when Felix was still alive. So hearing the news about him some years later hit me like a truck. I suddenly felt like I appreciated the game much more, and like you said, that he still lived on through it. I've always liked HOME more than OFF, because this party of cats is just so lovable and they have this great dynamic with one another. Last time I replayed it was in hard mode too, and yeah, the migraine and CP-losing stuff were a pain but I didn't feel it was TOO hard, maybe because it wasn't my first time around. I love zone 4. You go into the game expecting "OFF but with the Judge" and then reach this place where, if you hadn't figured it out by now, you realize "yeeeeah no this is very different". This place has gone to hell, and it does a great job at showing you that. I'll never forget the room where a hanged corpse falls right next to you, and then as you exit the room it chases you at an unholy speed. The bugged section in the Courtroom fascinated me as well. With how it was done, it felt very real, like there really was something wrong. I was expecting you'd talk about the multiple endings (which you'll only get if you're a douche in the courtroom, bc it's really easy to get the good ending). I liked the CGs a lot as well! My favorite probably being the one after the fight with Vader Eloha, with the Judge on the foreground and the others behind him. It gives *off* such a majestic feeling about him that amazes me. And about the secret bosses... I knew about the zone 4 shenanigans (liked how the game gives you a hint on how to open the door, which is just "keep trying") and I knew about the computers as well, but I thought that was it! Just a list of people who worked on the game/special thanks. Never knew they were actually bosses to fight. Probably because I always missed a dopefish or two. So yeah, great video as always :) Nice to know you had a good time with this game. Take care!
Hey! Yeah, I kinda feel like hard mode is the "second playthrough" difficulty. I wish I went more in to zone 4, I definitely felt like I skimmed over it in the review, alongside some things in the courtroom, I actually thought the glitchy area was really cool, and love when games try to do that stuff. I kinda have a bad track record when it comes to talking about multiple endings in games, I probably should have brought up the bad ending, but after watching a video on it, idk, there kinda isn't much to talk about? I actually really love the CGs too, it gives so much character to these cats, the one after the fight with Eloha is iconic to me, so cool. The judge really is such an amazing character, and I love that HOME contributed and expanded him. Thanks for watching!
I'm currently hyperfixating on OFF, but more specifically on HOME. There's a lack of fan-content about the game out there, so I was super happy to find this video :) I really loved hearing thoughts about this game from another perspective. I, too, like HOME better than OFF. Mostly because characters tend to be the most important part of any piece of fiction to me personally, and the characters in HOME have a lot more depth. (I also loved being able to play as The Judge, who was my favorite character even in OFF) Something I really loved about this video essay specifically was, along with your witty jokes here and there (I laughed at all of them, even the bad ones, ha) the section about Felix. I was a bit too young to be in the OFF fandom when HOME first came out. I only discovered OFF about a year ago, actually. I always love hearing about the creators behind games, and I loved to learn more about Felix through those few posts you showed at the end. I kinda wish I could've met them at some point, they seemed like a really cool person. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of this video, you kept me engaged throughout the entire thing (which is impressive, because I have an awful attention span LMAO) I will certainly be checking out your other videos!!
Better then OFF. ...And now that I've gotten someone's attention, let me rephrase: Personally, I _loved_ HOME. It takes OFF's whole identity and expands upon it, and through this enhancement created a journey all it's own... ...In fact, while OFF first inspired me to get into sketching, it's HOME that really brought out my drive of creativity and surrealism within those sketches. HOME is now forever etched into my heart, and that's something OFF, even with all it's unique identity, wasn't able to achieve. I just wish Felix was still here to continue crafting such wonderful journeys... May he find piece, and may we find another with his creativity...
I still vividly remember following the development of HOME back then and seeing Felix' comments under videos that were playing the game. It just was so cool to see him there It really hurts to think about how he isn't here anymore, especially since HOME has a special place in my heart from most OFF fangames
HOME has been such a special part of my life and I'm glad I was able to discover it. Every time I think about it I just wish I could've met Felix because the game that was created from his mind just... gets to me somehow.
I shall always be the heretic, I always loved HOME much, much more, I genuinely love this game, something i could never say about OFF. And i'm still pained to the core about what happened. Felix didn't deserve this, and we've lost a great man, someone who could've made even greater things, and just... be there, and maybe his life could've become better in general. Felix didn't deserve this. Rest in Peace, Felix the Judge. I wish I knew you personally, before we've lost you. I hope that it's fine out there inside The Great Moon.
I made the amusement park track (Autumn Wonderland) and it was an amazing experience working on the game. I didn't really play the other fangames but I need to credit OFF and HOME for solidifying my interest in rm2k/3 I miss Felix. RIP.
Hey, I just came here from the OFF video, and after playing HOME I wanted to watch this one as well. I just wanted to say that i really appreciated the work you did in reviewing this game in the heartfelt way you did it. HOME is a really special game, and you spoke about it really well; it made me emotional in the end, you respected perfectly the memory of Felix. Thank you very much for this video and keep up the good work!
I remember playing and nearly completing HOME many years ago (seriously screw that one puzzle in zone 4). The sad part is that I don't remember too much about HOME... I just remember the characters, general premise, how good the OST was and how uncanny the game felt. I guess I was put off by the altered dialogue that I didn't enjoy the experience as much as I enjoyed OFF. But looking back at it, I was approaching it the wrong way. This is a game to be enjoyed as something new and different, not as some sort of follow up or sequel to the universe in which it borrows some characters and themes from. After recently re-discovering why I loved OFF so much I decided to check HOME again and its kind of changed. I noticed some of the songs are different, it's WAY harder vs when I played it, and some of the art (mainly CG) has changed in style. I still have my copy dated back from the beginning of May 2015 'V.1.2.4' (back when it was called HOME and not A new HOME). But despite the nostalgia I had for this version, I'm replaying (and hopefully this time BEATING) 'A new HOME' in it's final version as the creator intended it to be. Edit : The boss battle themes in this game were legendary tracks, that ALWAYS stuck with me years after. Especially Aube a toute allure. I think that one was for the Japhet fight?
I came back to rewatch this whole video a second time. I can't leave without giving a proper thank you. Thank you for covering this in the detail that you did. You kept me entertained the whole way. I shed some tears viewing this as I think you did while making it. Much like going through the belongings of someone deceased, we've experienced a piece of art that immortalizes Felix and his work. The profound impact HOME has had on me will never leave. Your video has expanded that impact.
It was interesting to me to come off of your Off video and notice the similarities between the scripts and how the story beats and characters are introduced in the story section of the review. love this channel a lot and I'm glad to have discovered it
I've been watching a few of your videos after being linked your video on An Outcry, and I'm just... The end of this video made me cry about someone I didn't know existed an hour ago. Your videos are good, thank you for making them.
Spacey you are such an underrated RUclipsr Love that you make These amazingly produced essays about Games almost No RUclipsr talks about. Hope you get a bigger audience in the future you deserve man!
You can fight the secret bosses as soon as you enter the courtroom and the items they drop can be really useful: one of them drops a vial of green goo: an infinite hp and cp healing item (useless in battle but outside: oh boy, you essentially get a full heal after every battle) and also the deus ex machina: regular attacks hit twice: Alain using the deus ex machina while under the effects of reckless duress: insane damage each turn.
What I love with HOME is his evolution in the update but for some reason many change happened like the purified zone 0 who was scrapped or certaint character who were removed.
Well, you spoke about HOME, so may I humbly request that you also make a video about continue/stop/rise if you don't mind? It's my favourite OFF fangame (i do love home tho) and I'd love to see your opinions on it! Great video
Also about the final boss, it becomes much more bearable if you use zephyr honing, graceful osculate on your entire party, some kinda of duress on Alain all just before the fight, it makes a big difference. (you can use competences who grant positive status effects outside of battle to ready yourself for a particulary nasty one)
I honestly preferred HOME over OFF simply over game play. Don't get me wrong OFF was cool but HOME is cooler. Also that Batter dialogue is hilarious to me.
So you know how that Treasure Chest file is zipped? Yeah i tried replaying AFTER my free trial ended... and this was the only place on the internet I could find it. tysm...
i loved the video! i actually noticed you missed the participation of viola in game even if the character doesn't affect the story, i like her and i was thinking if you will talk of More off fangames if that's the case I'll recommend you Continue Stop Rise and Sincere Deceit, both excellent games like home and specially Sincere Deceit
I would have mentioned Viola if I found her at all! I didn't even know she was in the game until others brought it up in the comments lol. I might return to off fangames sometime, if I do, I'll be sure to check those out!
It wouldn't surprise me if Felix loved OFF more than Mortis Ghost himself. Mortis comes OFF as fairly dismissive and uninterested in his own work, which is completely unreletable to me as an artist and gamedev.
About the Plot (SPOILER ALERT) On Off it is never outright stated tha Hugos illness is deadly, so on Home Felix interpreted the sickness as something more mild than most, while you argue that Hugo wasnt even Scared when the Batter approached to kill him, his battle-sprite tells me otherwise. On Home the overall plot is the following: You the puppeteer seeing what happened to the world resets it this time controlling the Judge, to not only stop the Batter but also to make things right again. Felix's interpretation on how things got so messed up is that Hugo fled from Home, not interested in becoming the Guardian of the newly created Zone 4 (previously the Room) leaving Edna behind to take his place, with Edna who was just created by hugo to save him from a few Rogue specters (as in not controlled by the Queen) not being a proper Guardian caused the plague on Zone 4 to spread (the zone was purified with her death due to her being some kind of deputy or acting Guardian, she could keep the Zone Alive, just not properly). The queen thinking it was the Guardians's fault that Hugo fled sent specters to lay waste to the Zones. On earlier versions of the game it made a bit more Sense, it was possible to convince the Guardians to leave their Zones (aside from Edna) and then their Zones weren't purified and that was how you got the good ending
I see the batter as neither good or bad, he has a good reason to try and purify the world but, killing everything? That seems like a destructive way to fix things that doesn't seem entirely necessary, but at least he's trying to do something. Idk maybe thats just wishful thinking.
Still I prefer OFF soundtrack. I didn't like the boss themes, especially Dedan. There's so much to the Fake Orchestra theme and it's replaced by something noisy... Tho HOME is funnier to play because CATS... I love cats so yeah. And HOME is more interesting, the plotline and the characters
While I believe this game is nice, I just don't like the fact that this game absolutely villainized Batter. I get it, people wanted a happy ending, but this feels like a cheap way of appealing to emotions instead of taking the honest truth for what it is.
I disagree that the batter is the good guy because it comes up to a simple premise The batter has nothing to loose by purifying the world, meanwhile the world/the people in the world have EVERYTHING to loose.
May be a bit late to ask this now but how did you get the game to start? I tried downloading it from the link in the description but all that shows up when i try to run it is an error message that says "The RPG Maker 2003 Runtime Package is not present or not registered."
I just watched your OFF video and finally decided to play HOME to watch this video. but the resolution is wired and blurry and the screen has the activate windows thing. Does anyone know how to fix it?
In OFF's files, The Room is known as Zone 4, so I guess there's TECHNICALLY a Zone 4.
Technically there are 5 zones.
Also a few more things: the collar that Sugar gives you while I dont know how much it boosts each stat, it gives permanent health regen to Jozlyn making it the best collar in the game by a long shot.

I actually hate how he just recycles certain parts, word for word.
You should make videos about other OFF fangames, it's so cool to see a video like this about a game pretty much no one has heard of. Awesome video!
I would absolutely LOVE to see more videos like this on other OFF fangames. Especially ones like "Doll" & "Sincere Deceit"

Great job like always! :)
my first impression of home was a litter of disfigured cats trying to escape a place with cool magic
If you give Jozlyn the devoid claw, she'll have a triple normal attack that can do ~600 damage, and over 1000 with a crit.
I honestly preferred HOME over OFF simply over game play. Don't get me wrong OFF was cool but HOME is cooler. Also that Batter dialogue is hilarious to me.

I found this game worse and boring than OFF. It's great for what it is, don't get me wrong, but yeah it's not *that* great.
