In an interview, Gary said he'd written it for (and about) one of the homeless men he used to talk to when he went for a walk, when he lived in Santa Monica while writing and recording this album. I'll Never Let Go was written for another of them.
The last verse just gave me chills down my spine... It's so hopeful and it's a great way to end such a sad but perfect song. I think he's apologising to his wife and he's saying that he'll find his (forgotten) old self again.
I've been in recovery for many years now, from many hurts and issues, especially trauma. This song touches that piece of my soul. Ouch and Thank you 😢🙏🦋
I could just as easily listen to this song on my CD, on repeat, endlessly. But I figured I'd come to youtube today and instead listen to it with other people who appreciate the power of this song. I wonder how many listens there'll be by the end of the day..... 25,586 and counting.
I love this song! I relate to it a lot. I'm 22 and when I was younger I fit into some degree... I had good friends and several girlfriends. Now, I have social phobia (freeze up even in front of my family) so I avoid everyone and I feel like I am forever falling and no one and nothing is there to catch me. And I can't fix what's wrong with me... I think Gary was referring to his own fallen empire, as their popularity has fallen drastically over the past few years.
This song is lyrically incredible... Gets me every time, especially the end. That final "...Again" hits me like a sledge to the fucking chest... We are so lonely in the universe.
Maybe I am wrong this song is about himself! His drug and alcohol addictions. It s sad people have to fight these problems love to Gary on his recovery xxxx
Also, Gary Lightbody cheated on his girlfriend several years ago. Basically, all his albums and songs are about that one girl, wanting to make it up to her etc... If you listen to each Snow Patrol song, they all relate to love lost and trying to redeem his failure as a boyfriend. Listen to every album from Songs For Polar Bear to this album. I think everyone is trying to guess what this song is about, but if you've actually listened to his previous albums it should pretty much make sense.
@B182LoveRR Not sure, I wonder that too. Maybe the title is metaphoric for someone who goes through many highs and lows (like a President does, faces many struggles). You could also say that this is where the album title "Fallen Empires" comes into it. A President is basically like a leader of an Empire right? I guess you can put two and two together. The album is about Gary's struggles, specifically on love and loss. It's like he's talking about his own Empire I guess. Yeah, it's pretty deep.
Actually this is about a guy who happens to be President, who's just tired of his job. As President you don't make a whole lot of new friends, instead you tend to rely on your old ones more and more. This song reflects the regret he has for making his true friends bear with him over the years.
It's so damn deep man. Fallen empires, he was once an emperor once when he was taking the road forgotten before losing everything and downgrading to a president level
This song is so real and beautiful, it is very painful for me listen to it because it perfectly describes what my life has been until now, I am already too tired of suffering that I think it would have been better if I had never been born so that my family could be happier whitout me, in the midst of my problems I have a very close relationship with my dad who is the angel that God sent to the earth to protect me with my older sisters and my nephews, I have a "normal" life and a good job and a good income although in the end that doesn't mean anything, my bipolar disorder, my addiction to opiates, benzodiazepines and sex have damaged me in such a brutal way that I no longer find the point in continuing to live, the truth is I haven't committed suicide because I don't want to harm my family anymore, when I was 11 years old my mother who suffered from severe depression took her own life, she was the best mom anyone could have but the depression destroyed her little by little until she couldn't take it anymore and committed suicide, I saw how that almost destroyed my family but somehow we got ahead, I don't know what else to do, the only certainty I have is that I have to keep breathing, that I have to keep living because I still have hope that everything is going to be ok.
I was very touched, reading your comment, about your struggles. I am sorry about what happened to your mum. As if your mum committing suicide isn't enough to cope with. I know you don't know me, but I'm willing to listen, if you ever need an extra person to talk to. I can't imagine what you go through. Much love. ❤
@@sarahlund-nt3kwThank you, seriously, thank you very much for listening to me and not judging me, right now I feel so sad and alone that I am going to my dad's house to be with him this weekend, it is very nice to know that there are still good people who are willing to listen to you even if they doesn't know you.
@TheTMVProject I don't think it goes as deep as suicide. I've been listening to Snow Patrol since their first album "Song for Polar Bears". Gary pretty talks about the same girl in his songs. It's nothing to do with suicide. It's more simple. He's basically saying to other people, family, friends and people in his social circle if anyone is going to ask him or the girl for help. He wants to know if anyone will try and help their relationship before it completely fades out.
Flamestar1989 It's ok. I've been alone, just write. That's all I do, to keep myself from ending what would be a bright future. Shard of a Heart. Bring it so, true to the soul, What you claim it to be. Write, write, it'll never go. That’s how your heart goes, write, is all I can say, that's how I'll go too. Write my soul, my story. It'll never end.
I'm not exactly sure what the true meaning of this song is, but the album itself and a couple of the songs in it (including this one) could be symbolic of the U.S. The title is called Fallen Empires, and there is a bald eagle on the cover, the symbol of the United States. America is struggling with difficult political and economical issues, and is on the path of "falling." Also, there are songs titled "New York" and "The President," both of which could be referencing the U.S.A.
Damn. This band deserves the recognition of all those other idiot pop artists (e.g. lady gaga). Because maybe then, their music can be heard by so many more people and they can all be affected like i am by Snow Patrol's songs.
@TightASSspanker while will all have our opinion and to the 31 likes.......if you had a point...may have had more respect if you used more respectul language...that is the worse word...am assuming you are male and unfortunately their is not an equally offensive word that I can use towards you or the 31 others who like your commment.....if you have an opinion....fine...i respect that.....but your language takes away from how you may be or may not be feelin.insulted as a female

If Gary wasn't a musician, he'd be one of the greatest poets of our times.
Andreea B The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Agreed
He IS one of the greatest poets of our time!
Underrated as hell.
he takes one thought and drives it into a story that tears you down. SO personal, so real
Seriously? Who can dislike this song? It's beautiful, and this album blew me away! I love you Snow Patrol!

It's one of those ballads that's just so beautiful, that it stops me in my tracks.

i only regret that it's too short.. aside from that, it's beautiful. It's like staring outside the street from a window on a rainy afternoon.
If the core of my existence had a voice it would be Gary Lightbody's voice singing
I love this song! I relate to it a lot. I'm 22 and when I was younger I fit into some degree... I had good friends and several girlfriends. God, this song is so beautiful.
You're so right. I wish everyone could see that, though.

I am listening to this song at work, its late afternoon and I feel rejuvenated
my heart just got shattered....again
Amazing

you took the words right out of my mouth
I believe that this song might be about internal our own internal struggles
Makes me want to cry.
Wow...

I love this song.
I love it. thanks for posting
@TightASSspanker make that two, and most likely three soon. Great Song Gary enough said.

@NickyBarboza Agreed. That's what the best artists do.
This song is so powerful. I don't think its about suicide... sounds like substance abuse to me.

@dfjnjfn so a President is the only person who faces many struggles?
thrills me
who the hell could dislike this? i think i'll like this video just to annoy him. REVENGE for an awesome song!!
@smokejc Obviously not, but I'm using a President as an example because the song is called "The President"...
Only one? You're quite the optimist :)
@myapumpkin It was an example, not to literally say that a President is an actual Emperor. People get the point anyway.
The best video clip for this would be the clip of Keane's "bedshaped"

SINCE WHEN IS LADY GAGA JUST AN IDIOT POP ARTIST BROOOO LEAVE HER ALONE SHE'S A VWRY TALENTED MUSICIAN AND SHE DESERVES RESPECT!
