    This Q&A took a turn for the worst.
    Fans at a comedy show in Canada think the United States should take Trudeau off their hands. However, do they really want Donald Trump instead? Perhaps they should keep their prime minister rather than taking on the current US president.

    2:51 Weirdly enough, Scheer did get slightly more votes than Trudeau (it was like 34% to 33%) but Trudeau got more seats, so for once the “electoral college” thing (or our Canadian equivalent) actually worked in our favour

    • @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739
      @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739 4 года назад

      Weirder, Scheer had more votes across the nation too. Trudeau won because he took Toronto. Our "elector college thing" here is why so many Canadians are pissed. Don't get me wrong, this guy was being an ass...but there is a reason so many westerners are frustrated. The same reason Quebec unanimously voted for the separtist party, the Bloc Quebecois. Western Canada has had no voice since confederation. The Harper government at least made efforts to give independence to provinces, particularly Quebec. Trudeau trying to nationalize everything again is taking away our independence. Toronto doesn't know what's best for Edmonton, no matter how much they think they do. They shouldn't decide our fate. Period.
      Imagine if Vancouver got to determine everything about your governance...and they undermined your economy, your businesses, and shipped your taxes to services there. How would you feel? How would you feel knowing that there was nothing you could do, because none of your votes count anyway?

    It's a funny clip and I enjoyed it. So you know, Canadians never vote for a Prime Minister. What follows is a quick education about Canadian politics. It might be useful to you for future material. Then again, it may be just a boring political read.
    Unlike the U.S., the position of Prime Minister is absent from our constitution. Prime Minister is simply a position filled by the leader of the party that wins a majority of the seats in parliament. The leader of the party winning a majority of the seats in parliament is invited to form a government by the Governor General. Technically, that party could choose any member to Prime Minister. It's unlikely any party will win a majority of seats in parliament in the 2019 election. In this case, the Liberals are given an opportunity to form a coalition government because they were the last party to hold a majority of seats.
    It's kind of boring, I know, but Canadians never vote for a Prime Minister. We only vote for our local Member of Parliament. The party that forms a government is chosen based on winning a majority of seats in parliament or by being the last party to have held a majority of seats. The leader of the party usually becomes the Prime Minister, but there is no legal requirement for that to happen. Please accept my apology if this turned out to be a boring political read.

    How voting works in Canada:
    If you can convince *25%* of eligible voters, properly distributed across the country, to vote for you(r party), you are likely to be rewarded with (nearly) absolute legislative and executive authority.

      Nope. You are incorrect. How voting works in Canada:
      If you convince a majority of people in Toronto to vote for you, the rest of Canada can go fuck themselves, because Ontario holds 35% of the House of Commons seats, with the majority representing the GTA. And that's how Trudeau got elected. Nearly all provinces except the maritimes voted CPC or NDP (Bloc Quebecois in Quebec). Even Ontario was mostly blue...except one dot in the midst of a sea of blue: Toronto.

    I will never understand why the topic of politics escalates to yelling so quickly. Why can't people just exchange arguments, let the other one finish, think about their point of view and reply in a respectful manner? From my personal experience, yelling at someone or calling him stupid will not change his opinion. But listening, repeating his view, understanding him (which is diferent to "agreeing"!) and then calmly showing his an alternative argument, that he probably hasn't seen before, these things MIGHT change his opinion.

    • @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739
      @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739 4 года назад

      People out here are pissed right now. And rightfully so. Our political system in Canada gives 0 say to the west. We literally have no say in our governance. We elect memebers of parliament to represent us in our ridings. 36% of those ridings are in the province of Ontario alone. Of them, nearly all are the Toronto area. Almost all of Canada voted against Trudeau in this last election, except the maritimes and Toronto.
      And understanding how our system affects us is important too. We pay equalization payments to the federal government, who then divvy them up between the provinces. Those who produce a shortfall in government spending, get back more. As Quebec and Ontario spend the most on social services, they take more. We get nothing back from what we give. In other words, our tax dollars are going to pay for services in Ontario and Quebec, so they can fund them....while the federal government uses tax dollars to subsidize their companies to help their economy, and chokes out ours. Trudeau claimed the whole SNC Lavalin scandal was to protect 9000 jobs in Quebec (And even that was a lie. It was to protect the votes. The jobs wouldn't have gone away, they just would have left the company in Trudeau's riding)...yet some 200,000 people are unemployed in Alberta due to his policies. And still we are expected to pay for their services, with no means of standing up for ourselves. If 100% of western Canada voted for the conservatives (which nearly happened, save half of BC and Manitoba), we still would have Trudeau as our PM. The PM can get elected with less than half the votes of the opposition party. That's how flawed our system is, and how much it undermines the majority of the country.
      Don't get me wrong, this guy has no right to take out his frustration on a comedian...who probably also shouldn't have taken his out on him. But it's understandable why he is so upset.

    Hey Steve - technically, Canadians didn't elect Trudeau. No one in Edmonton, technically, voted for Trudeau. Only people living in the electoral district of Papineau voted for Trudeau. His party just won the most seats, which is how Trudeau ended being appointed as Prime Minister.

    Parliamentary government, do the people even elect the prime minister?

    • @Eric_8724
      @Eric_8724 5 лет назад

      Not really but sort of. The people elect members of parliament and the party that controls parliament chooses the prime minister so essentially if the Liberal Party gets a majority of the vote Trudeau who leads the party will remain prime minister and if the Conservative Party ends up with a majority of the vote then Scheer who is the leader of that party will become prime minister. So they don't directly vote for the prime minister but their votes for parliament do decide who the prime minister will be.

    • @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739
      @dostthouevenlogicbrethren1739 4 года назад

      @@Eric_8724 The liberals didn't get the majority of the vote. And it doesn't matter if they get the majority of seats either. If Andrew Scheer had won the most seats, Trudeau still would have been Prime Minister. He has to resign and hand power down to Scheer. You think he would have? After SNC Lavalin, the Mark Norman scandal...the refusal to hold himself to the same standard as other lesser politicians guilty of blackface, and repeat ethics violations?
      The only way Scheer would have been able to guarantee removing Trudeau is if the conservatives won the majority of seats to form a majority government. Otherwise, Trudeau would have been able to hold power and oust the elected government. Doubt it would happen? It did twice last year in the provincial elections. BC's premiere was not the one elected with the most seats. He formed a coalition with the other parties to take it from the party elected by the people.
      We are not a democracy...and we have not equal representation. No matter how the west votes, our members of parliament cannot form a majority or representation. Ontario alone holds more seats than all of western Canada. 100% of the people in Canada west of Ontario could have voted Conservative, and Trudeau still would retain power over us. Our votes do not count. We have no democracy here.

      Yes. The West has been pissed for years. The slogan used to be "We want in", as in we want representation in Ottawa. Since Trudeau has undermined us more, it's changed to "We want out". National unity has never been this low since 1980, when his father was in. And that says a lot, given Quebec took it to a vote to separate in 1994.
