  • Mistakes made in the video= I called the cam in the factory rebuild motor a hydraulic roller, it is not, It is a flat tappet.

The bottom line is you can make very good hp and torque with factory heads, block, etc. Just make sure you pick the RIGHT heads, cam, pistons, intake and carb to achieve your goal. Mismatched parts will let you down every time. 😁👍

Nick eather one of these engines would be a lot of fun thanks for taking the time to share with all of us what can be done, a great deal of $$$ to gain 80 HP just dependes on the budget love your videos shows how an engine can make good power and retain stock parts. years ago I did this for a friends blazer 30 years ago with 461 hump heads and a mild cam stock parts, it walked away from 350 ci like nothing. only after market parts used intake, carb, headers, cam. thanks Nick.

I'd like to see you put those TrickFlow 175s on that other, seriously built 406 and test. Then when you get those 041X heads ported, polished, with 2.02/1.60s assembled and installed on that killer 406, compare that. I think the TFS heads will make a very significant difference. My guess is 35-40 hp improvement over the best vintage cast iron heads.
Also, would like to see the 186 camel hump heads compared apples to apples against equally prepped 041X's

This is the engine I am now building . I want an 400 sbc engine that will rev to 6500rm max
The Howards 241/247 112lsa acts slightly smaller on 112 and improves the vacuum . When u calculate overlap this cam 112 ver acts 239/245 cam spec Driveability is far better as a result . idles around 850 at 11-13 inhg

Thanks Nick for all the info..Might call Nick at clay smith cams. Get a custom cam for probably cheaper than comp. We've had really good success with them and they are pretty fast..

400 sbc rule!! The aftermarket treats the 383/400 as the same . Bigger valves are easily done on a 400 either 2.08 thru to 2.1 . Alot of proof 2.02 is restrictive . Secondly with plenty of rear gear higher in numbers than 3.36 up to 3.7 especially a light vehicle a small single plain manifold weiand 7530 ,, upto 220cc heads eg AFR and hydraulic roller cam upto 241/247 112 --Lsa Howards is all very achievable . Yes u mght have to wait for your bank balance to recover . Just sharing my discoveries

Alot of cam because the 180cc engine heads are restrictive at that power and RPM level .

Anyone who thinks an identical spec 406 with internal balanced crankshaft and longer rods (same compression/quench dimension) will magically make any more power than the stock rod is delusional.

@dzperformance7360 but legitimate have shown that rod length itself does not effect hp. Nascar teams have tested it, engine masters has tasted it, and richard holdener has tested it. they all came to the conclusion that it by itself is does nothing for power.

@@dzperformance7360 I'd like to say thanks for putting these test out there for us.
I actually like the test on the stuff like the double hump and the 781's that you did the best. the lower cost and lower rpm stuff is great. it seems applicable to a lot of people. it really helps out guys like me that want to use what they have or is inexpensive.
i was wondering how good those trickflow double humps were, and if they were worth buying.

I'm not gonna throw a bunch of bad press out there.Because I don't want to hurt a American company. That's trying to make a living, but man. They are expensive for what they do.

Only need the 6.00" rods for an aftermarket internal balance crank because that is the shortest rod you can use because the counter weights are taller than what the factory crank has.
Adding longer rods have pros and cons. Pro for longer is less side loading and better for higher RPM applications. Con, cam to rod interference with higher lift higher duration cams that will require a small base circle cam. And vica versa for the shorter rods.
They both have their place, pick your poison.😎👍
