First of all, thank you, I feel 99% of scream videos on youtube don't cover screaming this way and it's really helpful, thank you. A concern I have is my headvoice is really breathy, and I feel that's making my scream short, breathy and less distorted (and then the amount of airpressure starts causing pain). Does this self-diagnosis seem likely and would you suggest anything moving forwards to help with this?
Just started this tutorial but i just wanted to let you know that i looooved that last structures EP. Hope we get more soon. These songs we‘re sooooo tight!
Awesome as always, I'm more of a false cord screamer but I want to use more this style of screaming and this video was really helpful. The uvula placement is something that only you explain properly from all the content I've seen out there. Thank you once more!
Eh thanks so much! I try to learn as much as I can from different places so I’m lucky to have taken singing lessons for a while. Considering going back to spruce up my skills and learn some more. I also want to learn false chord. Any good suggestions for videos?
I’m unfortunately no help in that regard as I can’t growl haha. I will say a lot of vocalists I’ve recorded , the growl is always much quieter than any other type of scream so you’re not a lone
I came to find out that the wider i open my mouth when i scream the easier and more gutteral sounding. That's why Alex Terrible always opens his mouth up so wide. And also by twisting my tounge i left/right or up like a backwards C i can alter the pitch of the screams. What really held me back at first was i didn't realize i needed to combine the false cord(head) scream AND project a stomach scream together. I was only doing one.
Really appreciate the content you put out Brandon, especially as a Structures fan lol. I've been practicing screams for about 4 years now and seeing these basics provide a lot of insight, and it's all in a nice little 8 minute package. Would love to see a tutorial on gutteral and false chord screams as well as the mid-to-high-range "pitched" screams, a la Sam Carter from Architects or Ben English previously in Invent, Animate. Thanks for all the content that you put out man, I'm glad I found your channel!
Eh thanks so much for the kind words and for checking it out. I’ve been meaning to learn false chord and lows since i don’t do them. Hearing Sam do them in the new architects songs makes me want to learn
@BrendonKPadjasek Would love to hear your take on it, your lessons are great man. I also love how interactive you are with your channel, I hope it booms. Cheers brother.
As a female, how would I find my breaking point? I manage to reach high notes and my voice doesn’t waver, how can I find my breaking point with a high pitched voice?
Thanks a lot m8 I think i've got to my head voice and pushing so I get a cool sound on just a "A" sound but I just can't make any sentences, articulating and pronouncing consonant is hard as hell. Do you have any tips ?
Great tutorial and detailed video. I would just ask How can there be so many different vocals tutorials about the same technique / scream but using different ways to get it ?
That’s a great question. A lot of people had confusion in the first video I did on the matter, so I had to think of another way to explain it. So that’s 1 reason. Reason 2 is everyone is different and has their own way of creating distortion. I feel like most people have an at least a slightly different tone from one another other.
This is the same way Chris Leipe and Spencer Sotelo from periphery does it. I have been a growler for probably 12+ years and I really want to switch to this style because it seems much more comfortable but I can’t seem to get my voice to break while switching to head/mixed voice :(
@@BrendonKPadjasek that is interesting haha I find the growl much more intuitive. I wonder if people’s bodies are just meant to do different things or if it’s a mental thing
@michaelcozzitortoiii5350 I wonder that as well. I haven’t put a tonne of time into learning the false chord/ growl style so I can’t write it off completely yet but yeah. Definitely have a difficult time with that one
I'm not sure if it's on the channel already or not, but could you make a video about what are all the switches for in all kinds of guitar amp sims? I'm going crazy every time i'm trying to make a proper tones, but i have no idea what is the difference between "gain" and "volume", wtf is presence etc etc. Thank you in advance!
@@BrendonKPadjasek flexing my neck, yes. i feel like i'm using my whole body, like you said, and sweating etc. but for some reason my neck muscles get so stiff. i'm learning so i must be doing something wrong but i don't have a vocal coach who's also a bad ass musician in a bad ass band ;) thank you for your answer!
@@BrendonKPadjasek i definitely don't stretch. i guess that's one thing i need to do now that you mentioned it. thanks! i can't say for sure where i'm looking, i never really paid attention. sometimes i imagine holding a mic in my hand so then i may be looking down i guess. i hear some vocal coaches say it helps to lower your head a bit as it helps the air flow and stuff when doing cleans, i don't know if it has any effect on screaming but with singing i can't say it helps, i just feel uncomfortable looking down when singing, if anything. i may be looking up, i'm not sure. that's something i'll need to keep an eye on. can it be a psychosomatic thing? like i'm trying too hard to squeeze it out of me that i get all tense, maybe i should take it easy and change my approach. i liked what you said about projecting, i definitely don't do that and my screams come from the throat more than anywhere else although i do try to use the torso to push the air out. thanks again for your answer, i appreciate your time and help
I dont get it. When I reach my breaking point, I just switch from chest to head, but no distortion there. I can compress only with cords, but its hearts and not right. Still need a clue what the distortion is(
@@BrendonKPadjasek I had to say, I've been learning vocals for some time now, so I worked a lot on my chest to head transition. Actually, I didn't reach the breaking point, I just slide it. For me, it's D#, so somewhere on C#-D I slide to head. Then somewhere on F-F# (my stable head position), to achieve distortion, I tried to push air harder by stomach and sent it to the nose. But most of the time I hurt my cords.
@@BrendonKPadjasek But with your technic I find some interesting sound. Its below head, and I've mixed some distortion to my chest voice. That was funny kinda lordi - hard rock hallelujah sound :)) But I believe that's not right distortion for screaming
Do you by chance take submissions to give advice? I only just started learning this technique of yours, and I was surprised how quickly I could achieve a tone similar to yours, but I can kind of only get "that" tone. I love your tone, but do you think this technique has an inherently "small range"? Like your highs and lows still sort of fall in that "mid" range in my opinion, even if they are noticeably higher and lower pitch. I guess I'm trying to say that, if I learn/perfect this technique over time, would I even be able to translate it to an extended range (higher highs and lower lows)? Thanks for all you do man
Oh I definitely do find that for mids and highs but for lows you’d need to learn another technique . That’s where learning false chord would come in handy for learning lows. I’m going to start learning so I can get lows under my belt. Highs definitely work with this though
@@BrendonKPadjasek Thanks man. Would love to see your style of teaching false cords, as I actually was learning that technique before trying my hand at frys (and before finding your channel). Its hard for me to decide whether to focus on learning false cords or frys first, I already have the bare basics of both of them down haha

That’s definitely one of the hardest parts. And if you’re holding back then you either won’t get the desired tone out or you may hurt yourself or become discouraged
I like the advice and technique, but it's not working for me. No matter what I do, it's never a scream/growl unless I intentionally target the throat and strain. It sounds terrible, lasts for about 3 seconds, hurts and launches me into a coughing fit. Without engaging the throat to force the raspy sound, my chest and head voices are just clean as can be without an ounce of attitude.
