How to PAINT Patio Cushions

  • These floral patio cushions were BAD. I didn't have the budget to replace them so... I painted them! Worked perfectly! See how latex paint can upcycle basic old patio cushions! I'm still amazed at the coverage this paint provided. It's certainly not the perfect solution for everyone, but if you're looking to extend the life of an existing patio set and have a little time to spare, this is well worth the $30 or so in supplies to update and ENTIRE patio sofa.

    I needed a quick update on my Hanging Hammock lounges, I added a little more paint to my mixer but the end product turned out great!
    I only did one side after reading that they have a harder time draining if they are rained on.

    I used spray tie dye and got stencils and it turned out great, after you do it you take a hair dryer and dry it and that sets the dye. I had white cushions that got dirty but didn't want to wash them for getting damaged.

    I read online you can use auto upholstery paint as long as it says flexible on the label. It looked easier because it was spray paint. When done you get the outdoor fabric waterproofing and fade resistant spray by scotch guard It looked great and the man said he was on second year of using them with no issues

  • @JeanManciniGough

    I love the idea that the fabric stays soft by using a very watered down mix. Some folks are saying the inside foam hardens for some. I had made new covers for mine a few years back, but those are faded. I tried dying them with Rit Dye, but they faded out again immediately! Argh!!!! I’m going to take the covers off, paint them, but before putting them back on, wrap an extra layer of batting on the entire cushion, then wrap that in plastic sheeting and seal with duct tape. This way, when I put the outer cover back, the inside cushion will be protected from water. I’m also going to add buttons for some tufting. I’ll post when done!

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад +1

      Oh no! To me... these cushions felt like a heavy sunbrella fabric. So not "soft" like interior fabric, but not hard as a rock either. Sanding between coats will soften them up.

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  4 года назад

      Hi Ellen! I responded in my head, but clearly neglected to get over here! So sorry! If you wrap the inside cushion in plastic, the paint wont effect the insert so it won't bleed through, but I'd tape off your lines and test first... I suspect that some of the paint would bleed through the tape, but if you seal the edge with a first coat of paint you might be ok?

      Hi Brenda! Sorry... we were on vacation without Wifi! I would sand the drips as best you can and just keep layering. I seem to recall having a bit of that, but once the paint has built up to its full saturation, those marks shouldn't be evident.

    Can this be done on waterproof fabric?

    • @AtCharlottesHouse
      @AtCharlottesHouse  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Helen! I would think if the fabric can absorb the paint, it would work. If it's a super shiny water repellent fabric, I'm not sure it would work. I.e. outdoor cushions that are 'waterproof' work, but an outdoor plastic table cloth probably wouldn't hold the paint.

Thank you so much for posting this. I am also not in the habit of trying something that is ugly. 🤔😂
