- There isn't anything I won't try to paint. I've painted bathroom tile floors, chandeliers, fans, furniture, and more! I have some old cushions on my patio that have faded and decided to give Rustoleum's Outdoor fabric paint a try! I love Rustoleum products! I was anxious to give this a try!

I couldn't help but notice that during the painting process you started on the actual cushion.
When using spray paint it's best to start off the surface you are painting then continue off this makes the paint more even on the finished product.
I pressure washed my outdoor patio cushions and let them dry in 100 degree heat outside(I’m in California so it’s very dry not humid) then I applied the paint as you showed in the video and I got perfect even coverage.
Well, maybe that is the trick!!
I think it was the humidity, it has to be between a certain temperature to use any spray paint
I think it looks good, with a contrast cushion, it looks like a denim!
I’m satisfied with the results. I had navy cushions that had slightly faded. The navy paint corrected that situation. The cushions look new again.
I am glad you had good luck with your cushions! I may need to give it a go again. thank you.
I think you are supposed to wet the fabric a bit before painting. This will help it be softer
Every cloud has a silver lining I think the finished look like a pair of denim trousers colour.
I have 2 chairs that could do with updating.
Thank you!! I saw the title and my mind went to the glider cushions I wanted to replace but cant find the right size!! You saved me!!
I painted mine using the same fabric paint. I live in Denver with no humidity and I got a solid color all the way through. It's definitely the humidity.
Okay, well I am so glad to know this! Thank you so much!
Did your cushions come out soft?
@@nessadaz9572 they actually did. It felt more like a waterproof type fabric after I was done. I sanded everything down and washed it all when I was done so that may have made a difference.
@@ethiceze54 it’s really humid in Ohio, so I may wait until the fall to do mine and they will be fresh for next year.
@@kimberlythomas7408 Yeah. That's probably a good idea. I used to live in Kansas and the humidity was awful. I used some fabric paint when I lived there and always had mixed results because of it. Where I live now though, I usually have better luck than not. So, I'm assuming it's gotta be the humidity. Good luck! I hope it turns out well!
I agree. This was my first time spraying fabric and also got spotty results.
It was to hot 🥵 humid outside... can’t work right when it’s too hot outside. Worked perfectly for me but I was also in 65 temp, with low humidity in Wisconsin 😎
Oh wow! Good to know Ryan!
I was totally expecting your hubby to paint those cushions! Lol! I was disappointed to see that the paint didn’t work, but honestly not surprised. Do you think it could’ve been old moisture stains on the cushions that may have bled through once painted? Idk, just a thought. They did look pretty clean though! Always love your videos! Stay cool!
Hello there! My husband hates to paint!! But, maybe the old moisture could have been the problem. I was so bummed!
I have been thinking about using this on our umbrella on our pier and splotching was one of my biggest concerns. Thank you so much for doing a video on this and giving your honest opinion. Since our umbrella is SO visible, I'm going to hold off until a better product comes out or Rustoleum is able to resolve the issue.
You are welcome, I hated not being over the moon about it. But, if it saved you from having a splotchy umbrella it was worth it!
The product is fine. Prep work is crucial. The application is why this didn't go well. Namely the weather she painted this in. She says it's super hot and humid. IT SAYS ON THE CAN TO NOT USE IN HIGH HEAT HIGH HUMIDITY WEATHER.
I've heard and supposedly it says right on the can that perhaps a primer coat in light gray is what you should do first before spraying with your final color. Just a thought and something I saw on another review of this product.
I liked the shaded results. Good job.
Jean Ranck thank you. 😊😊
Hey Jennifer, I'm a rustoleum fan also. My craft room shelves are packed with all the spray paint.
Must say I'm disappointed how this turned out too. Shouldn't have done this. Thats such a beautiful color! I was So ready to run & get this paint 😂 TFS
Girl talk about Hot!! I'm in Louisiana & its plum miserable 😣🥵 Out here looking like an Alpaca. 😁
I am trying the fabric paint this weekend hopefully it goes well and doesn't take too many cans. I wasn't happy with the coverage with the hammered paint. I used it on an umbrella base to match the patio set and the bottom took half the can.
Did you clean the fabric before spraying them?
Thank you for your honest reviews. I love shorter to the point videos. I am now a subscriber with notifications on.
Awesome! Thank you!
I too had a disappointing experience with Rustoleum fabric spray. I sprayed coral over dark green outdoor cushions. I’m about the use the faint on fabric paint to save my project.
The review was very helpful thank you! Looking forward to more of your videos .
Thank you so so much!
Thank you for doing this review,. I’m looking for outdoor paint on patio umbrella the red color is fading. I will still keep looking.
You saved me money and a few hours of frustration before I attempted this on a couch. Thanks for an honest review :)
Of course!
Hammered bronze is very good. I’ve used it over and over. Don’t paint on very humid days or in sun. 80° or under best.
Make sure what is being painted is wiped clean.
Good to know! Thank you!
You might be giving the paint a thumbs down, but I'm giving your video a thumbs up! Now I won't waste my money on outdoor fabric paint!
I just got a couple cans of this and I was hoping to customize some cushions with stripes or pattern. I'll try to do a used versus new comparison.
Can you share you final results?
I hope it goes well for you!
Dang! I really love Rustoleum brand. I don't think you mentioned it, but did you wash the fabric before spray painting or had the cushions ever been sprayed with some type of water repellant? I'm also wondering if more full coverage coats of spray paint would have helped? If Rustoleum's fabric spray is like other fabric spray paints it is actually a dye so multiple light weight coats can make it more blotchy.
I have tried a different fabric spray paints before (Simply Spray's brand has been my favorite so far) and eventhough it's nice to change the color of a chair, it really is SUPER expensive. I think I used 3 or 4 cans for ONE club chair. I have never tried Rustoleum's brand before, but I am a HUGE Rustoleum fan! I was really thinking it was going to be a good review 😭
Thank you for all this information! Sorry, it wasn't a positive review! Have a great day!
Me too! But that's ok. Back to using latex paint with a brush. 😉
She did not do a very good job painting the fabric the blotchy over sprays you should blend into the fabric so it’s not so blotchy another thing is don’t try to paint a white cushion dark blue although it will take several more coats it will turn out good I rubbed the blotchy areas blending them in to the cushion cover with a rough towel that blended the paint into the fabric. The rubbing with the towel also made the fabric very soft it’s not scratchy or crunchy or rough
InstaBlaster.
I've used these dyes (though not Rustoleum) to make a faded Red Umbrella look new again. Worked great and still doing ok halfway through its second Summer.
Trying to change a fabric's color from White to a Very Dark Navy is asking a lot of any "paint" (or Dye). Do enough coats and the white would eventually get covered... ok maybe...if the dye doesn't build up in thickness which I wouldnt expect. The (spray) Dye I used was very "watery" and dried with no buildup at all, so build-up in the thickness of the "dye layer" isnt likely...but I only did 3 light coats so i dont know for 100% certain.
Hi Jennifer! Thank you for sharing your review of this product. Have to say I was disappointed too. I really wanted your cushions to turn out perfect. Figured rustoleum would turn out flawless ☹️ Looking forward to your next video 👏🏻
I am so sad this didn't work, but so glad I watched this before purchasing. Thank you for your honest review!
Glad it was helpful!
How precious are those puppers!
They are a lot of fun! Spoiled, but fun!
L❤VED them!
I really wanted this to work even though I am not a fan of painting fabric.
I did too! I was so so bummed!!!
I tried it on a 1970 ottoman velvet , it was green now it Burgandy and it came out great and somewhat soft and not I Sprayed until I got the coverage I wanted!.“ Looks good! I was in Arizona DRY HEAT 101 degrees outside no humidity!
Perhaps the humidity is the key! It was quite humid here.
You mentioned how hot it was outside. That would be the issue with coverage. Drying too fast, making it spotty. Paint in a cool area without direct sun.
Thanks for the tips!
Modern spray paint drip much faster than in the past. I have found that this can cause less than uniform coverage. Most spray paint also have a range of operating homily in the directions.
How soft were the cushions after you painted them? Thanks for the review.
I used this paint a few days ago. The fabric is super soft afterwards BUT the paint did not cover evenly. It looks terrible.
I’m a huge rustoleum fan. My shelves are bursting with spray paint (sprayed our metal sliding patio doors white and it looks phenomenal even after 2 years) but this one is a lemon. I’m so angry.
I love Rust-Oleum spray paints too!! And the Hammered Bronze is awesome!! I used it recently to paint our weathered metal mailbox post and it looks brand new!! I used the Hammered Brushed Nickel color to spray paint pipe we used for open shelving in the kitchen, they turned out beautiful!!
👍👍👍❤️ Live your channel!! 😊
I love Rust-Oleum and was s disappointed this particular project didn't work out! It sounds like you use it as much as I do! It's such a high quality money saver!
I am also curious if the fabric was soft. I have always found spray paint to be difficult for me to get the paint even on dark colors. Lighter colors seem to be less noticeable. Thanks for experimenting. I do love the rich blue paint choice!❤️
Thank you! I may try another color? 🤷♀️
I don't mind the "splotch," at least in that color. Sort of resembles denim :)
bjohnson1149 you are so right! 😊
Yes please give a review of the rustoleum paints u have used
Thank you for the video! I was debating on buying this for my tired patio furniture. I think I will pass.
It looks like the color was flashing because of the humidity. Which gives it that white-ish tint:) I would Try using a blow dryer as you spray and see if that works better:)
I wonder if the humidity had anything to do with it? I still think they look better than they did before, so I'd call it a win!
Well, thank you! I do love a good navy color!
So informative! You helped me to decide. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Love your style!! Maybe the hi humidity interfered with how the paint dried? Sometimes paint doesn't do as well when it's really hot. Defiantly worth trying again!
Dysle Butts ageee! I will give it another go! Thank you for watching!
I found the same , my cushions were splotchy. But it was a quick cheap project for staging my front porch and didn’t want to spend the $150 to replace the old cushions. Also, I’m sure I put it on way to thick. Yuck to sit on, scratchy for sure.
Thank you for the video. I'm most interested in the Rust-O fabric paint, and it's kinda expensive. So, I'll be checking for another product to try.
Good luck!
I noticed the comment below. I agree when painting anything always have your hand angled and locked and when reaching the edge of the material allow your nozzle to flow evenly for that 1 second. This avoid dark spots when spraying paint on anything. When pressing down on the nozzle again you'd be doing it on the cardboard not on the fabric.
Great tip!
Thank you, Jennifer! Tried the hammered dark bronze spray paint on my vent cover, and it looks terrific!
I have enjoyed many of your tips and decorating ideas. I hope to visit your store but for now please continue to share decorating ideas with your audience. Cheers!
Oh Kathy that's great!! I 'm so glad that worked for you. Thank you for watching my channel!
Great video! I love your hair !
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for the review!
Such a bummer the spray didn’t work, especially considering the brand. I have to say, your skin always looks so great, do you mind if I ask what products you use? 😊💕
Well, gracious! You are super sweet. I have always used over the counter products until one of the girls that works in my store also sells Rodan & Fields. I started using it about 4 months ago. So, far I really like it! :)
Jennifer Decorates
You’re welcome!🤗 You always look so cute in your videos. Thanks for sharing, I have heard good things about Rodan and Fields, it’s obvious it works well! 😊👍💕
The pups were too cute!
That's right! ❤
Thanks for trying the procedure ... darn, it didn't work. It very well may have been the humidity. because when I look at my hair (witch frizz) the humidity must have an equally strange effect on the fabric. You gave it a good old college try!
Eleanor, thank you for your positive attitude, you are a hoot!
Darn I'm sorry it did not work , if it did I was going right out and buy some fabric paint and do a out door chair cushion I have been wanting to change colors on. I did spray paint the grates after having the carpet clean and when I wash them up most of the paint came off, so needed to be painted. We been painting our house here and the painters have been leaving by 11a.m. due to the heat here. It has been bad here. Stay Safe and out of the sun till the next time.
Great show.👏👏👏 Thanks for sharing your project and opinion. I really liked that navy color. Maybe even a few more coats than what you had. Don't give up. Krylon is a good old name. Love what your doing.
Thank you a ton!
Any paint will struggle in high humidity. I hope you’ll try it again w/ less humidity; you might love the results. 😊
It could just be something in or on the fabric. I believe that is the problem. I have a huge umbrella to paint, I hope it turns out!!!
Jennifer yes uniformity was a problem. But how do they perform? Are they soft and pliable for sitting?
They felt fairly stiff. But, most outdoor fabric does!
Me too. Love 2X Rustoleum. Do you think humidity had anything to do with it? I’m curious to see if you try something else. Thank you!
if done on a hot humid day you have to take into fact the humidity that will affect it and give your outcome. try again in the spring/fall once humid days are gone.
Hi Jennifer, I was going to say the same thing as Chriselda said. Being a designer, I have an eye for that type of things. I just had some kitchen stools upholstered for a client and the upholster asked if I wanted new foam. I said yes, because the dirt and oily things could and do come through the new fabric. So, when I looked at your white cushions I saw a lot of splotches on them. I am sure that was the reason it didn't work. Try clean fabric for another test. Bet you will get better results. PS. Love your hair up! Michelle Eaton, Eaton Interiors
Good idea! Thank you!
splotchy could be from how humid it is. I am more curious if they were still soft? I feel like it would dry all hard and crunchy.
I am also curious as to whether fabric was still soft. Good to know about the possible effects of humidity.
Yay! I found you! I'm doing alot of outdoor pieces real soon! Can't wait!
Have fun!
Bummer! I was picturing all these Dollar signs of the money I would save painting my old faded cushions . Thank you so much for this very helpful money saving video.
You are so welcome! Stay safe and healthy!
I’m curious about how it wears, does it transfer to clothes or rub off on hot humid days, how does it fair in direct sun over time? Etc would love to know!
I’m wondering how the fabric felt after the paint ? You didn’t mention it in the video ? We’re they soft still !
Not very:/
Humidity/heat isn't good when painting
I painted in a humid environment with chalk paint and it turned out off. Maybe the humidity effected the splotching.
Thanks for Sharing
Very informative and helpful. 🤗😘💖💖💖
Glad it was helpful!
@@JenniferDecorates Thanks 🌟
Thank you for your review. What do you recommend for painting on Sunbrella fabric
I spray paint everything! Thanks for review.
You are welcome! I do love spray paint!!
Thank you the hammer bronze tip for the vent covers I was thinking about updating mine. I didn't think they looked that bad, but not seeing them in person. Thanks for sharing!
Rebecca Sausen you are so welcome!!😊
Thanks so much!
Tempted to try this on my indoor couch. 😬😬
Let me know if it works out!
You didn't say if the chair covers were soft. Darn. Wish you would have commented on that. Thanks for trying this for our sake!
believe it or not, the two things yu need to do is actually "sand" the upolstry fabric with some very fine grit, and pre wet or pre mist fabric . Brush it in, rub it in hard into fibers. Dont just spray fabric, you must rub it in to get good penetration. Good luck. Also..sometimes fabric has 3m scotch guard on it..which prevents absorbtion of paint. ;(
Wow thank you for a truly honest review! Giving you a subscribe! Thank you.
Do you think it was blotchy because of the color change? I mean, going from white to that dark blue, general rule of thumb is to use a grey primer. Not sure if that is an option for fabric. Now, i know you didnt like the coverage, but how is the actual texture of the cushions? Id like to hear your opinion. I want touch up my red outdoor cushions, but in the same color. I'm just curious if this product does in fact keepimg close to the integrity of the fabric or if it hardened it a lot. Id love to hear your thoughts!
I am thinking about spraint paint the blinds...they are those paper-like materials, and I think they are more like plastic/fabric...do you think this might work?
You said it was very hot. Most of the time you can’t use spray paints when it is hot or humid outside. Maybe that was the problem.
Hi Jennifer thanks for the review. Do you know if the burners on the stove can be painted? If so what paint would you use that would withstand an open flame. (Is there such a thing??) Tfs🙂🌹⚘
No, I am sorry I have never heard of paint for burners.
Yes, Rustoleum has a High Heat spray paint for grills and stoves and such. I just saw it on tiktok. That’s what’s it’s called Rustoleum High Heat.
I bet, there are oils, possibly dirt, pool chemicals, that maybe didn’t visibly stain the cushions, but effected the way the paint color grabbed the fabric.
Just curious if the fabric was soft?
Well, they were outdoor cushions. I would say they were semi-soft? Do you think that would have made a difference?
Thank you for your review.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Jennifer, thank yo for this video, my gazebo canopy is all faded, its suppose to be black but by now from the raining and hot weather its now a faded grey, is there a way I van revive the color black again?
Very informative and good to know! Tfs!
How much does it cost per can and how many cushions will it cover vs buying new cushions?
Genius. Spray with the cushion propped at an angle to avoid weird croutching and less likelihood of spraying your shoes.
Thanks for the review. Do you think the heat/humidity effected the coverage?
I can't be certain, but maybe!
it really didnt look that bad. im lookin to try this on an entire outdoor sectional. just was lookn for a color that will match my umbrella. good job tho. and was wondering do you think this paint also cone in a can so i could use a brush? 🤔
Go for it!
I would guess the humidity was a big factor
I think you may be right!
I redid my entire patio set with the teal and it came out amazing! I did my coats over a few days (takes time to fully dry and flip cushions). I allowed at least a half hour to dry between coats BUT I made sure to do it on days when the humidity was down. I think this definitely was a factor in your end result. Also they recommend you wash or powerwash your furniture before spraying allowing the itdms to dry completely before applying the spray paint :)
Did you have any issues with the paint fading or coming off on your clothes when you sat on them ?
What about trying on a faded stroller??? 🧐🧐🧐
Jennifer can you suggest what to use to paint sunbrella cushions mine are high back chair cushions so they are not the tight square cushion type a bit soft so they have a lot of give to them they are black with print of them I know I have to paint them dark unless I am suppose to prime them ? So many out there using medium which makes more sense to me. I respect your opinion
Well after using Rustoleum paint, I feel it is best to purchase new cushions. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching, Donna!
Do you think it would look ok to use on top of patio umbrella that gets way faded anyway to prolong its life a bit more? I have navy umbrellas that are so faded on top but underneath isn’t.
Ooh now this is a great idea! I definitely think it would be helpful!
Just found you! I am looking for paint a microfiber/faux leather sectional for outdoor use. Probably crazy expensive with spray paint. Any other suggestions for making fabric waterproof either afyer it's painted with fabric paint or a combo. Thanks I appreciate any ideas.
You could always use Scotchgard to keep it water resistant!
I used it too it did not cover a floral pattern and was not soft. Was pricy BUT they do have a money back promise. so silver lining but had to throw away the piece.
Want to paint a faded blue patio umbrella... any suggestions?
I'm sure the way it looks in person and camera are different but what I am seeing it gave your cushions the appearance of suede or crushed velvet. Just curious on how the texture turned out? Was it soft, or rough? Thank you for the informative video. 😊👩🎨
Oh how interesting! It was a bit stiff- but the fabric is outdoor fabric.
