Where Does Endometriosis Occur?

Endometriosis isn't limited to the uterus, it can occur anywhere in the body.
Some of the places where it might occur include:
• The ovaries
• Fallopian tubes
• Uterus
• Peritoneum
• Uterosacral ligaments
• Pouch of douglas
• Bladder
• Bowels
• Appendix
• Rectovaginal space
• Diaphragm
• Ureters
• Kidneys
• Liver
• Lungs
In the past, experts thought endometriosis only happened around reproductive organs, but this idea has been proven wrong. However, this misconception still exists and can make it difficult to diagnose endometriosis accurately.
Endometriosis has been identified in various organs, including the heart, brain, lungs, liver, and eyes. Research has shown that it can spread to distant organs, indicating its potential for micrometastasis.
While the spleen used to be the only organ where endometriosis had not been observed, researchers discovered the first case of endometriosis in the spleen in 2022.
Bowel endometriosis can occur in up to 12% of cases, most frequently affecting the rectum and sigmoid colon in the large intestine.
Urinary tract endometriosis is less common, found in approximately 1% of cases, with a higher occurrence in the bladder compared to the ureters.
It's noteworthy that endometriosis is more commonly found within the pelvic cavity than outside of it.
