@Lurker M The bigger picture is there, but the descent into lunacy the left has become over the course of Obama’s and Trump’s presidencies is undeniable. The fact that I'm fucking reading books now more often than I'm playing some of my favorite video games should tell you exactly where gaming is at rn. I don't even like books that much if I'm being honest, i just need an escape from this shit because gaming as a whole has just become so incredibly tainted by corporations and politically-driven idiots online that even thinking about playing games hardly ever crosses my mind anymore.

People can't respect differences and it's just insane. The same people who preach equality/equity and champions LGBTQI+ and is behind all the major race relations movements are hypocrites when it comes to real opinions, and I mean opinions that aren't in any way offensive. We all used to be more open with each other as people on the internet but with how rhetoric has become more worse on the internet now and how people can just rally around and basically exile you off the internet its no wonder everyone is hostile. Many people are going to dive off of social media entirely when the only people on anymore are seething with hostility over everything and anything that differs from their opinions or belief. Not even regular religious people are that devout to where they would do something like that.
I used to think the gamer-sphere was never going to be this convoluted but after being a long time gamer since childhood(I thought maybe I was just getting older but...) I began to realize that gaming became garbage. I noticed that the generation I am from and maybe even the last half of the millennials working on games are making games with profit in mind and not for the craft. Idk how many Older millennials are in charge but a change in who's in charge drove that motive up for profit. It used to be an industry that was niche and it turned into a cash grab run by people who incompetently put out rushed/copy pasted projects and give you nothing new. Games used to give you more bang for your buck but now you are lucky to even get a fully complete game that just isn't out to make a seasonal cash grab out on you. It's just straight predatory. And all that does is warps the poor younger gamers who are learning early on how to gamble... it's sick. Consumables and loot crates were created in mind to target a younger more impressionable generation because they knew that that demographic would buy in the most.
I think where gaming is now we are running a very slippery slope where if politics became more ingrained and the overall view was that video games were a negative influence than some bit of poor legislation could be passed that actually really makes video gaming either a limited activity or many games are banned/heavily policed against younger kids having access to them. No more parents buying their kids rated M games or anyone or if a kid is discovered playing those games or even game outside of their age bracket than its some kind of punishable offense like paying a large fine as a parent for poor parenting. We could be heading towards a world where you can only play for like 2 hours even as an adult. I could see the many freedoms we take for granted someday being taken away and in place of those freedoms a time sheet of when you can express those freedoms.
We should use the time we have to just enjoy and celebrate some of the games we have had before the multiplayer explosion. Many of the single player games that made fun a priority. I feel bad for todays gamers who don't really play a game for the fun of it. People more often just play these games to win or for the k/d even but I rarely if ever see anyone play for the sake of creating fun. Making their time playing fun. If you were to see these so many people playing multiplayer right now with faces that look pissed or angered or vindictive you'd see that so many gamers are venting. Using games to vent can be good to relieve stress but if thats all you use games for then they eventually become a poor coping mechanism. Also factoring in how you feel when you play with friends if maybe you have more of a good time playing with friends than if you solo than maybe its best to step away from those types of games and only play if friends wanna play and invite. Theres a treasure trove of single player games to play and enjoy I think this channel would help so many of those modern day gamers who have gotten into that "gaming just sucks" rut. All this is just big stretched opinions.

    • @VarthalabauHair
      @VarthalabauHair 10 месяцев назад +5

      1. Low tier competition / Lobbying which lead to the popularisation of DLCs/microtransactions/skins and overall paying for additional content. Also the fact the video game industry is so loosely regulated, basically allowed the big players in the market to do whatever they want. Today you don't basically own a game on Steam, you purchase a digital license to access it that Steam can theoretically revoke or alter whenever they feel like it.
      2. Video games became more mainstream and thus were watered down to cater to normies and since most normies are idiots they are "tricked" into buying the exact same game every 2 years or are milked dry by keeping them hooked to shitty multiplayer games with a thousand microtransactions (I swear to God I have that idiot friend who keeps falling prey to marketing hype every time there's a new AC title or WoW expansion).
      3. Feminism and wokeness penetrated video games around 2015, because of course they couldn't leave a predominantly male hobby alone without ruining it, which companies embraced because a) they received funding and b) virtue signalling is far easier than good writing
I think these are the big three that killed the industry and I don't expect this to change. Companies now are making way more profit producing shit games, than they ever did producing decent ones.

Your rant(?) has total relevancy and makes complete sense. It reminds me of when we used to play steal the flag back in the 80’s...
We (my neighborhood friends) lived next to this huge field that was complete with a swamp, mountains, forest, rivers...the entire enchilada. And we would play STF with actual BB guns, Co2 cartridge bombs, sling shots, traps, everything...and WE WOULD GET HURT. ON PURPOSE. After a couple years more of the neighborhood kids wanted to get involved and play and sure enough some of the girls wanted in on the fun too. And sure as shit, they soon after started employing all these new rules and “safety” standards that eventually even the parents started regulating. After all the new “rules” and “safety” measures, the game sucked balls. And everyone stopped playing eventually...at first the original members said fuck this and then the assholes who implemented all the damn rules wondered why no one was playing any longer. And that was that...it was over. Lost in time, forever. In 2006 I actually made a remake of the map of that field we played in (it was HUGE, probably 10 sq miles) using the Unreal Engine and unironically the same shit happened there online. After 2yrs of playing it and hosting the servers and “normies” ruining the fun, I stopped playing and eventually shut it all down by 2008. That was more complicated (as to why we stopped playing and hosting servers) but essentially it was the same thing. “Diversity, Inclusion and Equity (ironically DIE)” has ruined and will continue to ruin anything you cherish or love. This couldn't be more relevant today with DnD and tabletop RPGs. Tabletop RPGs used to be like a very niche type of game for nerds who gathered in their mom's basements and played 16hour sessions. Today everyone and their moms have heard of DnD, it has become woke (because an ultra niche game def needed trans characters and gay couples in it) and it has even caused an entire edition (5e) to cater to wokeness.
I was never an original player, in fact I never played DnD until 4 years ago, but I never approached it with the mentality that it had to somehow adapt to me. I was getting into someone else's hobby so I had to adapt to it. Now wokies discovered DnD so, like the entitled snowflakes they are, of course they thought wokeness was fitting in a medieval fantasy setting. Even BG3 had to adhere to woke standards and tropes.
Just play a medieval fantasty game like it's supposed to. If you don't feel represented then DON'T PLAY IT.

To be fair to the whole 'd&d removed racial statistics' thing, it's actually addressing the real problem of how race can sometimes pingeonhole your class choices, especially with the restricted pointboy they decided for the edition. Though, honestly, the problem is actually that the d&d statistics and the way they interact with classes is still built as if assuming a 'rogue-like' nature to a campaign, where you make characters with rolled stats until you get a good one, as the others quickly die, but d&d just hasn't been brutal enough for that for a very long time. Better solutions to the problem would probably involve making every stat matter to the vast majority of characters instead of making most only matter to a few classes, but 5e is a bad system, so they went for the laziest solution that's easiest to plug and play.

In my opinion, there were 4 things that ruined gaming.
    1. The internet. Microsoft was probably the first to take advantage of this in a malicious way. Starting all the way back at the launch of the 360, charging players 60$ yearly just to play multiplayer while the original Xbox had it for free.
It also allowed developers to continue to work on their games even after they were released (patches). This was supposed to be a good thing but it just turned into a lazy way for companies to release full priced trash so their consumers can beta test their games. We used to pay beta testers, not the other way around. And of course they quickly got rid of couch co-op as they realized Multiplayer could be monetized in ways single player games never could, probably taking notes from older PC MMOs... the difference being you already paid full price for them. It also kills physical media, once the servers go down, all you have is a beta copy on your bluray disc.
    2. The rise and influence Android/iOS smartphones. I would say around 2009, video game companies were starting to take notice of how mobile gaming developers were doing things. Candy Crush and Clash of Clans were probably huge influences. EA of course charging the lead into bringing that business model onto video game consoles and PC. Giving birth to FIFA Ultimate Team and delivering the utter failure called Dead Space 3. Also killing the SSX franchise and destroying Dragon Age. Activision Blizzard took it a step further with Overwatch by normalizing the lootboxes which were already common on mobile games. Of course the idiotic games industry rewarded that behavior by proclaiming it as GOTY.
    3. The massive influx of non-gamers into the hobby. The 360 for some reason that I'm not aware of (perhaps their marketing?), became a massive hit with normies and redditors. Again, this one on the surface also sounds good, it means we all can share the enjoyment of the hobby right? Nope. They not only helped normalize the shitty practices these companies were doing by constantly shilling and supporting them financially, they also started to demand changes, to the point where every western video game company has to do as Resetera says. One of the things I noticed right away is that they purposefully made characters uglier from that point on. Some other examples include the yearly purchase of sports and generic, watered down AAA games and random dialogue/clothing censorship. The latter got so bad even companies like Sony pretty much cut ties with Japanese developers because the censorship was getting out of hand for them just so they could virtue signal to their consumers in California.
    4. Budgets / lack of creativity. As new hardware tech became available, the budgets had to rise and the risks had to decrease to deliver the experiences the new consoles were capable of. The problem was, AA and other mid to low budget companies were slaughtered in the process (exceptions being THQ Nordic and Focus Home Interactive). This centralized a lot gaming on a few companies, the only alternative could only be found on Steam with indie titles which of course don't do enough to satisfy the needs of many players who were looking for alternatives. This created yet another problem because for some reason, companies like Sony decided to treat this medium as a mini Hollywood, throwing all the budget they had on actors, advertising, animations and graphics. Gameplay be damned. You can still see that influence in other games like Red Dead or the new God of War. Fun goes in the trash bag. Repetitive, generic sequels also became a thing, it keeps the budget in place as the normies rush the stores to consume the new product, hell, even increasing the prices to 70$ didn't stop them.

This could be due to two things. One, as the industry gets bigger, games have become more expensive which results in less risk-taking. Risk only happens if the losses aren't as big, but games today cost as much to make as movies. Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Rockstar, Capcom all know their games are too big to fail so they avoid taking any risk for fear of losing.
This is very similar to what the movie industry is going through today. As movies become bigger and bigger and only superhero comic book movies seem to be making money, why bother for studios to take any risk knowing that if anything other than a superhero movie is made it will bomb. Also, there are no more mid-range budget movies, that were so often made whose budget ranged from $10 to $30 million. Today for a movie to be a success it needs to make $500 million to $1 billion and then there are the indie movies which are the opposite. We don't really have options but rather two ghettos to choose from.
Second, the previous generation had the fortune of having both the Xbox360 and the PS3 competing and producing a bunch of quality games. This was not the case for the Xbox1 which was not even present for this generation. In a sense having a healthy competition is good for consumers and the industry.

Games become more expensive because these companies employee 1000+ people to work on the game.
Why do they need 1000+ people, communication becomes broken at that point.
Every good game that ever existed with a memorable point had under 50 people working on it. Clear direct communication and usually a smaller group means a passionate group since its not like EA where people do a "game development" uni course than just look for the big companies for full time work.
Gaming is an art you need to create on your own passion, not on the back of corporate employment.
Another issue companies need to continually impress shareholders, every year MUST look like growth.
If you have an audience of consumers @6million people in a franchise and it never grows because the type of game is too specific then the only way to increase your profit is to make cuts in development whether it is time or quality (usually work together anyway). So you get these recycled games that are just a skin change every year with maybe 1 or 2 slight changes.
Games are made to impress share holders not gamers, and for some reason people still keep buying the trash. If everyone just said fuck it i won't buy a new title for 1 year, you can only hope the biggest companies will collapse, forcing developers to become their own publishers. Cutting the cancerous corporate management payroll.
Remember over 1/2 of the game sales profit go to people who never even touched it. If the "CEO" isn't also designing the game. They are to big and wasting money.

    • @robinjonk
      @robinjonk 3 года назад +16

@@AnOldRUclipsAccount Yes! You're absolutely right. These things are at the root of all the issues AAA gaming is facing today. Investors/shareholders, bad management/software engineering and, to a point, the consumers.
      1. Investors/shareholders obviously want to make as much money as possible so they simply try to mitigate the risk of losses as much as possible.
      2. Management often think they can "make a baby in a month with 9 women", in other words, they think more people working on the game equals shorter development time and a better quality game, which is just not the case. Plus, a bigger dev team might make the project look a lot better to shareholders. This makes them over-promise and under-deliver. Cyberpunk is a great example of how this can go very wrong.
      3. The average consumer just sees a trailer for a game that looks cool, and so they'll buy it. They simply don't to follow every piece of gaming news and just want to play some cool games without thinking about it to much. The average person is just shockingly stupid, or rather, simply don't give these things much thought. Marketing teams make sure to sucker these people in year after year. Oh, and a special mention to the folks on Reddit who'll tie their identity to a game or company to the point that if you have anything negative to say about said game or company, it will feel like a personal insult to them, and so they'll defend a game like Cyberpunk no matter how fucked up the game turns out to be. Free marketing!
So yes, literally the only way all of this will ever truly change is when people start to vote with their wallets, thus making this system collapse, but the pessimist in me feels like we're a loooooong way away from that point still.

We called these "middleware" games to B-games - AA-games. I really want them to come back. There are many "hidden gems" on systems like PS2 and even PS3. I openly admit that modern indie-games don't do it for me. AAA is clearly in the shitter. I mainly play older games now and discover new amazing content all the time. Too bad we can't have nice things with new technologies. The term "middleware" actually means for example Havoc physics. The software that game developers implement so they don't have to reinvent the wheel every time they want to use a wheel in their game.

This is from my perspective (as a developer).
Games are expensive to make even back in time. Even though in NES days or even Atari days games were simple, they were still not something anyone could pull off due to their complexities on interfacing with hardware.
Although nowadays development tools and hardware improved a lot (eliminated a lot of quirky stuff and became more generalized), the fundamental complexity of software engineering never change (you can make NES game using modern tooling faster, of course, but it’s not what we want today). These engineering aspects include how to test your game and make sure every major part is covered (find bugs), or how to plan the development work and estimate the time (release on time). These are common issues on software project management (hard to get right), which can be migrated / delayed, but not eliminated. Games are more interactive and advanced, so requirements on these are even higher.
On the other hand, nowadays game development is more on artworks instead of programming side. Unfortunately this cannot be made to work faster (you cannot fully automate the drawing or modeling process), so you have to add people. But communication cost gets higher for more people (asking 2 people do a job is different from asking 50).
Also different from normal software, it’s also not possible to be fully automated on testing the games. They are too dynamic (you don’t know how to simulate a human player to play them in different ways - that’s literally AI). You can only test some basic part of them using automated tests, then you still need human beings to play test it.
So many problems with 3A are rooted by these - and social stuff on top of them. From this standpoint, we need a productivity / tech breakthrough on these games to be more realistic and wealthy on contents. However it is not easy, so we literally are trying to make time for it.
(And, Indie games are basically a compromise on this - I believe everyone want to make a 3A masterpiece, but they cannot, so fall back to indie and do something creative - with cooperation with your imagination)

    • @Xlfdll
      @Xlfdll 3 года назад +11

For issues with “Gamers”, I don’t blame them.
IMHO this was from a very plain wish - you participate, you have fun, you feel meaningful / good. It’s entertainment.
But the problem is that we push this “make everyone feel they are meaningful” idea a little too far, and technologies simply could not catch up with it (you are literally trying to make a virtual world to “cheat” people and make them feel they did something. This is a type of “simulation”. It’s hard). Hence the crunching, false advertising, and microtransactions (especially in Western you sell games with a price cap on standard editions, making it worse)
Bottom line, this is a hard problem. I don’t blame gamers because this is literally how human society runs (20/80 + chaos rule). Its hard to change that.

I'm getting older and more disappointed with younger generations for falling prey to the trickery of the mainstream. I try to understand that they've got different circumstances to contend with. I grew up before everyone had 24/7 internet access, smartphones and social media. I witnessed the rise of the casual game market, the greedy monitization schemes, the social engeneering, the echo chambers, the political influences etc after I could think for myself. I took a break from gaming all together during my twenties. I got interested in gaming again and bought a PS4 about 3 years ago to play Bloodborne and the all Resident Evil titles. Now I'm catching up on great games I missed and learning what has happened to the industry and it is pretty gross. I've since collected a good backlog of quality games to keep me happy for years. Even filtering out the garbage, there are just too many games now days. I'm not interested in the latest titles, I am looking forward to trying Elden Ring though. Hope it turns out well. Looks promising, and I've never been disapointed with From Software or Capcom.

Most of what the casuals and consoomers are doing to destroy gaming have nothing to do with subjectivity. Bad games coming out is only possible if people are supporting it through various provable means.
Fact: games are currently made ready for purchase before they are finished.
Fact: it is now the norm to be unable to own completed versions of games on physical copies while this was not the case in the Golden Age.
Fact: most mainstream games are charging full price for partial games via cutting parts out for DLC and things like amiibos.
Fact: microtransactions exist and are the new workhorses of the industry by way of numbers.
Fact: Steam Greenlight was a thing.
Fact: publishers are buying development studios and franchises just to disband and discontinue them.
Fact: paying money for these things teaches the sellers that they will be rewarded for doing it and encourages them to push boundaries.

That physical copy will be either a buggy mess** or an unfinished buggy mess, and that doesn't even include the fact that it more than likely is missing the rest of the game that was cut out for "DLC".
** _Just in case_ there is anyone who is tempted to claim that "Games have always had bugs!", I want to proactively condemn this Straw Man. Yes -- for the most part games have always had bugs. But a game having undetected bugs that were only discovered by gamers _after_ release is an _entirely different_ situation than a game having _serious and obvious_ bugs that the developers were fully aware of before release -- and usually a heaping stinkpile of them at that.

I got to be honest that last statement you made about Nerds being outcasts for playing video games brought a tear to my eyes, when I was younger I was the textbook definition of a Loser, I loved video games because I could play these badass characters in a new world that was unavailable to me outside of school or home (I was sheltered because I had ADHD) so many hidden gems that I could barely play because I was poor, but each time I replayed I was always surprised by what I missed games helped me appreciate them as an Art and a blessing. . . And then came Middle/Highschool where the Hype was Call of Duty all over the place, every new game talked about was that Game with different names, I didn't take interest because I couldn't afford it but also because I saw it was the Same Freaking Game, now games are just Fortnite, Call of Duty, and various online rip-offs that cost money each month. Sad to say but Gaming is Done, (except for THQNordic bringing back the classics) I still play games just the Old ones because I was Missing out like damn. I stand with you 100% on this hill. There's no reason for companies to change their trajectory when the consumer keeps buying their products and their profits keep going up! Of course, those who don't give a shit about this wonderful and immersive hobby and only play the same exact competitive shooter or mobile gacha game won't hear this. They will keep playing it because it's their and their buddies' new addiction. They will buy battle passes and the new SUPER battle passes because they must spare no expense when it comes to being the best or showing off their new skins and guns. They will continue to feed the machine. That's why it's important for those of us who want change to become conscious consumers and spend our money wisely. We must practice restraint and be mindful of things like FOMO and hype. We must quite literally vote with our dollar.

From looking at the games coming out over the past decade(s) you can see what year the industry started turning around. Back in 2012 When Mass effect 3 came out it was considered the first packaged game to offer a form of loot box at its launch and it was the first game to have an ending changed by adding a dlc to fix it.. not to mention the game also got pushed to reach more mainstream (IGN character reporter ingame, appeal to homosexuality, etc). Despite that the game had really great moments and great gameplay (especially in multiplayer). 2012 was the year with mixed quality of game, and bigger issues in the gaming industry started coming (and film).
When we get to 2013 games like "gone home" became a thing, which was leading up to the gamergate controversy and politics in games. From that point and today it has become a routine for gaming companies to appeal to these crazy sjw. Basically a lot of game companies have sold their soul to cooperations and we get games pushed in different direction either by money or agenda. just look at Diablo immortal which was made on the mobil/tablet so it could appeal to the chinese market. You could say World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria was the early adoption to reach the chinese player base by making an expansion based on their culture because of a reference point to a Pandaren Brewmaster in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne expansion.
You also start to notice there aren't many new IP that have come out and become a classic icon in modern gamings, If we look at mass effect which was released back in 2007 it was something we had not seen before in a Sci-fi game, because of the setting/concept and how well it was implimented. It could have been the next "Starwars" or "Star trek" but because of what happened with ME3 and andromeda it never reached its full potential.

Holy fucking hell dude you just hit it spot the fuck on with regards to ME3. I remember it like yesterday. I remember the ending was so shit I couldnt believe it and they actually did patch in a new (still shit) ending after all the promises of "wildly different" endings when they all were copy paste with different fucking colors. I HATE online but the online COOP of ME3 was very addicting but they also introduced the fucking microtransaction crates to unlock shit because they knew the grind and knew they could entice the average gamer to pay to get shit quicker. Fuck man Im so glad to see someone else call this shit out with dates perfectly. At the same time blockbuster was still around and I rented a sports game (silly me right. Wanting to try a game before purchase) and it would charge you $10 to play the full experience on top of renting it(online etc) and I took it back and tried to explain to the fucking dipshit employee "what the fuck is this shit" just for them to look at me like Im the retard.

Absolutely top notch video. Can't believe I missed out on your channel for so long.
I say the same things. Gaming is a stagnant hobby but it's not because of the seepage of woke culture. That's only a symptom. Everybody wanted to keep making more and more and more expensive and hi-quality games that they removed imagination and curiosity from the mix. The '90s were the best time in gaming, up to around 2006 or whenever the 7th generation of consoles were taking off (PS3/360). It was an age of curiosity and innovation, stemming from a lot of the timeless classics like Ultima being games developed in garages by ultra-nerds who wanted to take their tabletop experiences to a new medium. I've always believed the audience was the problem. The frustrating part is that the audience is also the solution, and by now there's been too much muddying of the waters and people won't speak concrete language and agree to hard definitions of the problems we're all facing.
They'll also never commit to a boycott. Remember when Left 4 Dead 2 was lambasted and people said they'd never play it? Everyone in the groups dedicated to said boycott were playing it anyway.
Ever since the East Asian gaming modus operandi took hold in the west -- that is, freemium games, with microtransactions and psychological exploitation -- I think that's when gaming started to well and truly decay. Gaming developers and publishers engaged in a self-destructive binge of monetization that's largely drained the soul out of the hobby. Indie developers are NOT innocent, either. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Many indie devs have caused way, WAY MORE damage to this hobby/industry than the AAA names. People like Phil Fish, for example, who pioneered suicide baiting and fake death threats for attention and inadvertently helped bring to light the incestuous relationships between morally and ethically bankrupt "games journalists" colluding in secret that speaks volumes to us about their own irredeemable failings, professionally and personally, which inexorably led to their excoriation by GamerGate.
I owned every PSX and PS2 game, and had a vast library of PS3, Xbox Original, and Gamecube titles back in the day, and the spirit that motivated people back then just isn't present anymore. I've ultimately reduced my gaming time to almost nil, only buying one or two games a year now, and only because they're sequels to things I liked previously. The only game I'm going to buy next year, that I can see so far, is Dying Light 2, and after the whole kerfluffle about Chris Avellone being cancel culture'd during its development, I'm strongly suspecting that it's going to be a mess.

    • @bricaaron3978
      @bricaaron3978 2 года назад +2

*"...the whole kerfluffle about Chris Avellone being cancel culture'd during its development..."*
You've got to be kidding me. So he didn't write the game? For one, I -- not being a fool -- _never_ expect _anything_ from a AAA game anymore. And I honestly believe that's all that is required: not being a fool. But beside my general expectation of mediocrity (at best) from Dying Light 2, I had already become convinced the gameplay was going to be very flawed, based upon information from the developer.
Without going into detail, I am certain that they seriously messed up the parkour mechanics in the name of making the animations _look_ more realistic from a second/third-person perspective. I.e. during coop/MP. Exactly the opposite of what the focus should be, which is making it _feel_ good from the first-person perspective.

I saw your Cyberpunk video so I subscribed and watched a few more. One recommended by youtube was also that one. Guessing a lot of people did the same so that is why influx of comments. Anyway, everything is hyperproduction now with only money in mind. Games, Music, Movies, everything. Oscars 1994 had Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, Lion King. All watched even now and hailed as some of the best ever. This year had what? Parasite and Joker? Does anybody even remembers those now? Everything became so casual that quality and even originality(every other movie now is either sequel or remake) has been thrown out of window. And yes, part of that problem are normies that keep pumping money into mediocrity and even pure shit. Why should Star Wars movies ever change when they still earned billion dollars? Why shouldnt Disney push Captain Marvel when that movie made money because lots of people cried how they cant watch "Endgame" if they dont watch that movie first even though they are not connected with anything but just post-credit scene that tells you nothing? Same with gaming. With all crying about Cyberpunk, that game sold 13 million copies. With all bad narrative of TLOU2, that game sold 4 million in first week (or overall, cant remember) because Playstation fanboys drool over exclusives and would suck Sony dick for them no matter the quality. Why should we get better product when companies can get away with anything they serve us. Madden is the same every year to the point they just change skins. They even leave some banners of the past so in "Madden 2021" there is a banner for "Madden 2020". That is embarassing. And normies still buy that because "Hey, I wanna play newest one with updated rosters and everything". Today, Troika would still be alive. because I have no doubt that normies would suck overhyped Masquarade like there is no tomorrow. And I like that game but the state they made her and launch was asinine. I couldnt play it in late 2000s without a patch and even then it was broken so you can imagine what released product looked like. Gaming oficially became too big to even be punished for its mistakes. Because no matter what companies do there are people who buy it.

I've been saying for years now I love video games but I hate gamers. Not everyone who plays video games is a gamer in my book. People who play what they want, don't follow what's happening in gaming, don't care about the behind the scenes stuff, who never watched a video on twitch, or livestreamed a game, never uttered the words "git gud" and could give two shits about trends or being a "real gamer" are not gamers. Those who do engage in all that stuff are.
I completely agree with you about games in between AAA games and Indie. I distinctly remember going into a retro video game store about 5 or 6 years ago now and looking at their PS3 games for sale. For $15 I picked up the following because I'd never heard of them, they looked different, and what the back of the case said about them piqued my interest: 3D Dot Game Heroes, Puppeteer, and Folklore. The guy behind the counter looked at them and in a snobbish, dismissive tone looked me right in the eye and said "Really? Of all the games we have for sale you're buying those three?" Those 3 are some of the best games I've ever played and have more heart and charm than any indie or AAA title game in the last 5 years. It's like when someone asks me what some of my favorite gaming series are and I say Bomberman and Bubble Bobble because I like puzzle games with some action thrown in. Thankfully I don't listen or care what others think because, and I don't care if I sound like a dick, I don't respect their opinion and can't take it seriously. They're the ones who have made the hobby the poor shadow of what it used to be.

In the 90s and 2000s, there were a lot of games that were never on a budget to be considered AAA, but not low budget enough to be indie or shovelware. There were so many games that came out under the radar, it's unbelievable. Almost monthly, there were two or three new games that never got fanfare, and merely spawned on GameStop shelves. We don't have that anymore. It's either a AAA budget game or indie.
