I think he's just been mired in the swamp too long and has gone from playing cynical characters , to being one. I think he needs a rest, and some fresh perspective. Always sucks when you see someone pulled under like that , he used to be pretty objective.

When Cyberpunk2077 came out the cost of game development had already been covered by pre-orders alone and they actually made a profit. Business people see this and think, "it doesn't matter what we put out, we will still make money just by hyping up the product before it's release".
CDPR proved this by spending millions on marketing and it paid off.

Gaming becoming mainstream is what killed it. When a market such as gaming grows as large as it did it's no surprise that shareholders saw the dollar signs and nothing else. Creativity takes a back seat for the most part in favor of "appealing" to a wider audience. Decisions now are made because of the money and not because of what the player actually wants.

@@Black_Sheep186 Maybe you're an old guy pushing 50 years old for all I know, but I don't think you're entirely correct here.
Millennials and Zoomers were both too young to remember the arcade gaming scene. That was basically a Gen X thing much like MTV was for them that got more popular in the 1980s.
This dude who made the video (Synthetic Man) was practically born in circa 1994 - 1996, based on the videos I've watched of him. So he was definitely too young to remember the 80s and 90s.
My sister who is now in her mid 40s started gaming on the NES console during the mid - late 80s, shortly after Super Mario Bros 1 went on the shelves. There was definitely a culture surrounding gaming. Just look where James Rolfe (Angry Video Game Nerd) came from.
The problem is gaming got too big. That's the point that this comment that we're responding to was trying to make. It's the same thing with Hip Hop. It was getting big in the 1980s and 1990s, but it was still based and highly creative. The same thing applied to gaming back in the 1980s to early - mid 2000s. Rap music was accessible to a lot of different people back in the 1980s, but it definitely wasn't as big as it was 20 - 30 years later.
Back in the 1980s gaming had a more specific audience. That doesn't mean it wasn't booming because it certainly was back then. My sister can attest to that. Some Hollywood movies of the time period had scenes of kids playing at arcades, especially since they made a lot of films focusing on the youth like Lucas (1986).
Gaming has gone downhill in very much the same fashion that Hip Hop went downhill before it. Suits came in and started purging the subculture with diversity crap.

No, the problem is people paying them in advance via pre orders. They're clearly spending less time then they should because people are paying before the game launches, so it doesnt matter if they finish the product or not. Nobody eats a half meal, or takes home a broken car, only the gaming community likes and accepts abuse. The CEO's and executives understand they can abuse this community and lauch unfinished products, profit and move on to the next project, so it's up to the consumer to make the decision to NOT pre order anything. Act Man literally says in his COD World at War video that he liked when games were rated M for mature because you needed an adults level comprehension to enjoy it. Also, why should Act Man play other games when he can talk about and play what her likes and what's important to him? He's not chasing clout or anything.

    • @MintyLime703
      @MintyLime703 2 года назад +79

This is completely anecdotal but my 15 year old cousin brings up Act Man just about every time he talks about Halo or CoD. He pretty much just repeats everything Act Man says, even about games he never played considering he hadn't even been born at the time. Many of his videos are basically just nostalgia pieces and although they're relevant to those of us who did grow up with those games it seems aimed at younger audiences who didn't. Not necessarily a bad thing since it encourages them to go play those games, and I don't hate him or anything, but I'm just saying that seems to be a significant part of his viewership.
The whole M rating thing isn't really evidence of anything. Kids can understand adult rated media. They're much smarter than you think. I mean I was 11 years old when WaW released and I was excited for another WW2 Cod having played the previous ones. I really enjoyed the gritty theme and history was always something I was interested in. CoD isn't the best historical source, and I recognized that, but it was still historically themed and that was good enough.
Being an adult that "passed" history class doesn't really much mean anyway.

The franchise NEEDED to evolve because its old, stale hack'n'slay formula wasn't selling anymore. It would've been the end of GoW if the devs hadn't changed anything about it. But it's a GOTY now and the sequel is the most awaited game for 2021. Rightfully so!
Times change and the audience changes with them, they grow up and develop different tastes and preferences. And the matured fans of GoW are now enjoying a matured, grounded Kratos and his relatable issues and goals way more than a somewhat generic Hulk-like creature raging through somewhat generic narrow levels. GoW is more personal now, from the camera angle to the melee combat and right to the characters and story. And ppl appreciate that approach. Mindless button mashers are dying out on the AAA market, because now games can be and do so much more to bring their message across. It's all about immersion now.
Capcom also learned their lesson and upgraded their RE franchise even on different levels with modernised remakes of their old games and a complete overhaul with RE Biohazard and RE Village, so that everybody can experience and enjoy this awesome franchise. And so far ppl have been loving every single game that was released recently. Imagine what would've become of RE if Capcom still released their games with a fix camera and those horrible clunky gameplay mechanics. This franchise would've been pretty much dead by now.
Evolution and progress is key. You can't expect the same old formula to work forever just because it was successful once. Nothing works like that. Everything changes in this world, so as a game dev and/or publisher you either adapt or you lose.
Therefore there's no reason in condoning those devs who chose the former option, as long as it works out for them well. If you don't like their new approach, let it be. Enjoy their older games and move on to other ones which give you what you want. Simple.

To respond to the Act man portion, Act Man is making content on mostly reviewing new games and games that have come out. He doesn't just make videos on call of duty. Now, I would have to disagree with the part on how the consoles ruin the gaming industry. Because as a friend of my had said to me when i made the same argument about this is "That most people don't want to play a complicated game where they have to struggle just to progress in the game. Most of them are people who comeback home after a tough day at work and just want to relax and boot up a game like COD or something like that and just have a good time before they have to go to work the next day." and I honestly I agree with this because a family member of mine work their ass off everyday and comes back home tired like everyone else. and what he does is boot up Call of Duty World War 2 because he likes the game and has fun with it.
Also I know what your gonna say. Why doesn't he or other casuals pick up an old game. Now the thing is that the majority of Casuals don't want to buy old console generations because they have friend who are playing the new multiplayer stuff and they want to have fun with them playing video games. Sure, you can invite some over to your house and playing video game but do you really think that your friends would have the time to do that with you from time to time or better yet do you think your friend would enjoy playing old video games with you?
Finally , one last thing nobody is to blame for the gaming industry being has it is now. Sooner or later game was gonna change like everything else does. It will have trends like everything else does, it will have great game like everything else does, it will have horribly bad games. It just like movies, tv, books, sports and marketing. So, It was inevitable because that just how progression is works.
Games are supposed to be made for everyone casuals, fanboys and fangirls or even gamer like you and me to have fun with and enjoy hell maybe inspire with how the game is played or how the graphics look to be or do something that you would want to do.
Saying that is dying because of them is a fallacy. Because they are what make up the video game community and they are what keep it alive.
Not to say that I don't understand where you coming from I though the same. I would want old game to comeback because they did all feel unique in my eyes. But, the thing is that we can't go back to the what thing where. We can however use them as inspiration for future game devs to remake or mix up maybe have the next generation feel like the ps2 or xbox games but with their own style. But yeah.
Idk if you'll read this but if you do one thank you and your channel is great I like when people talk about old games I make feel like their would one day be a chance that some would bring them back updated but not totally changed.

Mainstream gaming is dying just as hollywood is - same thing really. Gaming as a whole tho... not so much. Darkest dungeon, cuphead, hollow knight, sekiro, monster hunter, shadow warrior, vermintide - these are just a couple of the games I adore and id wager have none (or few) of the regular triple A trappings. There are many outstanding games out there, the problem compared to 2007 for example is just that theres too much to keep track of nowadays. And all the big budget, overhyped stuff is turning out as garbage so take a guess what kinda news are dictating our perception of gaming....

This study falls flat cause they would always reject film concepts they never experienced (and therefore didn't know if they would like) over those they already experienced and were pre-established.
The exact same shit has been happening for the past 20 years with the videogames industry. Only way the AAAs are going to innovate is if they "steal" the concept off an indie game that strikes gold.

I can empathize, I remember like ~10 years ago I started getting jaded by all of the then-modern games (think 2011/2012). That’s when I got into replaying my old childhood favorites from the PS2/Xbox/GC era, as well as PC gaming with emulation.
My advice: ignore the release dates of *_every_* game that you come across and go into it relatively blind with tempered expectations. Just search around for good games, whether they’re genres you’re familiar with or not, and dive into it.
Two games that immediately come to mind as surprisingly good were Age of Empires II and Persona 4… odd combination of games, I know, but that’s kind of what I’m trying to get at here. I’ve been playing 3D Platformers and First Person Shooters since I was a young’n, and as a result of 3D Platformers essentially dying during PS3/360 era, I was railroaded into those modern military shooters, which in turn drove me away from console gaming in general
I guess gaming is more enjoyable if you’re the “Jack-of-all-trades” kind of gamer and are willing to jump into any genre from any generation

They actually listened to the fans, and support actually comes with a fix you can make yourself to the hat-glitch in Mafia 2 DE. People used to identify as 1: Religion 2 : Nationality (attached to) 3: Ethnicity
Blowing up the nuclear family was revisioned as "freedom from collectivist oppression", this "freeing" allowed multinational corporations to multiply and sell their products to the fragmented individuals of the family, as the family no longer shares a home, tv, car, phone etc.
In the realm of social engineering and identity, it turned people into blank canvases that corporations could paint onto what they wanted, in this identitarian vacuum, people will consume their identity, ("I'm the Adidas guy, I'm the Fender/Gibson guy, I'm the Nintendo guy, I'm the Marvel guy/Avengers guy")

My own random thoughts on your video and gaming as a whole:
Your video was pretty good, but you did trail off a bit on some parts. Also the constant bashing of “casuals” definitely doesn’t help your stance, as it comes off as “Anyone who doesn’t play games that I think are good is a casual.” I don’t think thats what you meant, but be careful. Everyone enjoys different kinds of games, and may want more of that genre, hence they go and buy more of that genre/franchise. I am a HUGE Metroid fan myself, and I must admit that I have nearly every game in the series. Sure, am I selling out to Nintendo by buying the same formula over and over? Maybe. But its what I enjoy. Its my money and my free time. Others may complain that every Metroid game is basically the same, but thats kind of what I want. I want to play a classic Metroid adventure with some new features. I want to play Metroid goddamnit, and I don’t care what other people have to say. I think thats what many of the CoD, AC, and FarCry fanboys are on to. They want to play CoD goddamnit, and they don’t care if it makes them a casual. Its their free time and thats what they want to play. Its how they have fun. Who am I to tell them that the games they are buying aren’t “true” games? At that point I am just like that asshole screaming into a church that their faith is dumb. Just leave them be, dude. Games are made to be enjoyed, and the kinds of games that people enjoy are up to them. While personally I don’t like a lot of modern games, that certainly gives me no right to claim that they aren’t good games. Goodness is subjective, and always will be.
But why do these “casuals” continue with their savage ways? Why do they refuse to “learn” to enjoy better games? Like I mentioned before, goodness is subjective, but there is something else here that is more important. Its the fun factor. In a world so connected by the internet, its no surprise that games have also become connected. Why experience the fun of a game by yourself, when you can do it with others? I believe that this is why games like CoD, while low effort, have such an appeal. Being able to hang with friends, do hilarious shit, and just in general enjoy a game with friends is sooo much fun. For example, a bunch of my friends and I play Warface, a free to play shooter that is hyper monetized and bad in every sense of the word. But… I love it. I have so many fond memories of hilarious moments with my friends in that game that I can overlook all of its shortcomings. In the end, I had fun with the game despite it being completely shit. This here, is the core of the matter. Games are for fun. When I get home from a long day of work, I want to unwind and relax with some mind numbing fun. Sure, am I not experiencing “true” gaming by playing Apex instead of MGS? Maybe. But in the end, I am having fun. Some of the games that you mentioned that are “better” than other, modern games aren’t that fun to me personally. BoTW has to be one of the worst and least fun games I have played in years. The combat was skin deep, the story was inconsistent and also skin deep, and the whole “breaking” mechanic was so poorly implemented to the point of the game not being fun to play. Sure, to you BoTW may be one of the better games, but I’d rather play CoD than that any day.
At the heart of the matter, my largest criticism is that what you are saying feels…very elitist. Lets do a little reversal here. Someone comes up to you and starts telling you that modern games are “true” games, and that playing outdated, clunky old games is just something for people who are too weak to adapt to modern gaming. That old games are for people who are too dumb to fully understand modern games. Based on this video, your reaction would probably be along the lines of, “Dude, shut the fuck up.” And that, my friend, is my polite advice to you. Everyone enjoys games differently. Just because someone enjoys something differently does not mean that the objects of their enjoyment aren’t worth their time. I am all for pushing developers like EA to actually INNOVATE FOR ONCE instead of ctrl c, ctrl v‘ing their games, but the way you went about it came out as very elitist. While personally I don’t like many modern games, I don’t hold anything against people who do. Gaming is for fun, making it about “elite” and “casual” is pretty immature in my opinion. Everyone should be open to enjoy games the way they want to, whether thats sinking 160 hours into Persona 3 like me, or playing 1000 hours of CoD. Can we all just get along and play?
PS: Random other comment: I went through a phase where I was just like you are now in this video. I had finished Shadow of the Colossus, my all time favorite game. I was moved to tears by the story, and the world and gameplay was unlike any other game I had ever played. The world…so vast, so empty, yet every tree had a purpose. Every crumbling edifice, a history. Nothing was out of place. The world was crafted with love, and it truly felt alive, without having any NPC’s, enemies, or wildlife to populate the landscape. There was no endless side quest checklist, only an open world with sixteen bosses you needed to defeat. The journey to each taking you through the beautiful vistas of the land. Despite only running on the PS2, I still consider it beautiful. Every time I play through, I get lost in the world and end up somewhere I have never been in over 10 years of playing the game. The game wove a more compelling world than any game I had ever seen, and I loved it for that. To me, this game was perfect. It was art. It was fun, beautiful, and meaningful THIS was what gaming truly was.
Yet… when I recommended it to my friends, they would all try it and maybe get through the first Colossus before putting the game down. I was shocked. How come no one was liking it? It was clearly superior to any modern AAA game, so how come no one was enjoying it? I kept trying to explain to my friends what was so great about the game, but they just couldn’t see it. For the longest time I thought that they were “casuals” who couldn’t appreciate true games. But when I asked all my friends why they put the game down, they all said that it simply wasn’t fun. It was then that I realized that my idea of a “good game” didn’t work for everyone. And this is one of my problems with this video. Some people may simply not like some older games. It doesn’t make them “lesser gamers”, it just means that they have different interests. Shadow of the Colossus means a lot to me. It changed my life, and no one can take that away from me. But in turn, I shouldn’t be able to take the meaning of a game away from someone else, even if I think that game is bad.

Large chunks have nothing at all going for them, outside of a shrine, and could have been removed with nothing of value being lost. This includes those shrines, because most of them have no real substance to them.

Agreed. I have played games since Pong so I have experienced the entire lifetime of video games. I now have so many games to chose from. I get it that the last few years are showing some problems in the industry but there are still many more good games than I could play in many lifetimes. And not all of them are old. The number of people supporting games have allowed an unprecedented number of games being developed from the full spectrum of great to crappy. Older games had just as many issues (bugs not included) mentioned in this video but we were just so damn happy to get anything. Every game I have played I could bitch about something in comparison to something another game does well.
Edit: now that I think about it there were always too many games than I could play. Most of my adult life I have played at least 30 hours a week and I am still picking up things like FF series that I didn’t play when they first came out. Mainly because I haven’t been a console player until the Switch came out and I could play XC2 on the train to work.

I think you are missing the point. All industries are driven by profit and pleasing share holders. The board of directors of every triple-A company will demand that the game they approve will check off all the boxes for maximum profit : "micro transaction, game as a service, seasons, dlc, good graphic, etc..".
If we change the way we consume their products, they will have to adapt. As long as people pre-purchase, drop massive amount of real-life money to gain advantage over other players (battlefront 2 for ex.), buy super legendary edition, etc.... the company will continue to make games with the same mindset.
The prime example is Classic wow/tbc. They released Classic wow with almost no changes & no microtransation and people started buying gold in crazy proportion. Blizzard observed the community and realised most people will spend real money to gain advantages. For tbc they released a "dark portal pass" and almost the majority of people bought it....

That's basic economics dude. A purchase is a vote. If you don't like these games, DON'T BUY THEM!!! It's only when they are hundreds of millions of dollars in debt to their investors because they can't get a return on the investment, because nobody is buying their garbage, that they will start making a better product.
If I own a company that makes canned tuna, and I start packing the cans with dirt and feces and garbage, why should I stop if people keep buying it? I'm making higher profits because I don't have to use real, costly fish. I don't care how much people are complaining, they are still buying it and my company is being rewarded, so why the hell should I stop?

Synthetic Man- All i have to say is WOW! You have literally called all of my favorite games Shit! PS4 exclusive games, Tlou 2, the witcher 3, red dead 2, ghost of tsushima and countless others. Despite me your volatile and irrational hatred of nearly ALL modern games, you instead blame me and everyone else for your crazy yet false hallucination of what you perceive as the downfall of modern gaming. That being said, I thank you for one thing. There are 2 other exclusive PS4 exclusive titles which are among some of the best masterpieces in my entire collection. However I will NOT tell you what they are, therefore preventing you from raping their well earned reputation as phenomenal games. Had you talked about these two games, I would have been extremely mad and triggered.

The problem are the low effort, high priced generic garbage. Like 50-60 for a Lego game vs the same priced big open world with actual effort put Into graphics and textures, voice acting like god of war or horizon. Lego trash is clearly the same value...

@@leightonrud66 You can't really say gaming is dying when there are such awesome upcoming releases. Also, amazing games that take it to the next level of innovation regarding mechanics are still being made. In the CRPG genre alone, I can mention Pathfinder: Wrath of The Righteous (released last year) and the upcoming Baldurs Gate 3 that honestly has passion project vibes all over. It might not be your cup of tea, but if you see a review or two you will acknowledge they are awesome. For shooters, there's Arma and Hell Let Loose that deviate from corporate fps crap.

    • @LethalByChoice
      @LethalByChoice 2 года назад

@@cassius573 Dude if you don't think gaming is dying you aren't looking at the big picture. AAA studios used to release good games, and now pretty much all of the major franchises are dead because the people in charge don't care. Also, the games you're listing are either old releases or a niche. Arma, for example, came out several years ago, so that doesn't count; and Hell Let Loose, albeit a good game, is a cliche'd WW2 shooter (like we didn't have enough of those...) that was in early access for quite a long time before it just recently came out of it and its basically a Rising Storm clone, made by an Indie company. So I fail to see how that disproves at all that gaming is dying when all you need to do is look at how many beloved franchises are going down in flames.

    • @cassius573
      @cassius573 2 года назад +1

@@LethalByChoice I see your point, but I really don't see like gaming is dying from the business or the quality standpoint. Only if you refuse to let go from titles that used to be good and we're screwed by their respective companies at some point or another. They do it because it makes money. The moment it stops making money, they will adopt another strategy, it's that simple. Like Assassin's Creed for example, I agree the franchise took a dive but there are some honorable mentions like Origins. And honestly, I didn't think Odyssey was that bad because I crave Hellenic setting and it simply isn't a very explored setting in gaming. Also, I applaud their effort for discovery mode. Sure, the games are kind of a copy paste of each other, in different settings...but that is the point of assassin's Creed, I guess?!
Games like the ones from EA Sports for example, I'm sorry but they just make too much money for them to let go of this format. I'm not gonna shoot myself in the head if it's not my favorite games. I do have Fifa that I bought from an 70% discount and I play it with friends or occasionally alone and have some fun. Sure it's nothing that reinvents the wheel, it's just a fucking soccer game. I'm not crazy for this kind of game, but a lot of people are and I can respect it. Same with games like Fortnite and League of Legends, that I never brought myself to play because I think it is shit. For me. But people like it, so good for them. I'm not entitled to think gaming should only cater to ME. There are enough titles that satisfy me, while others downright disappoint me. But such is life. If I had to shoot myself in the head because Cyberpunk is shit and CDRP 'betrayed' gamers...well, I'd just be a very miserable individual. I had some occasions that I felt like a fool, like Avengers game for example, that represents greed and everything wrong with gaming. I fell for the hype and pre ordered that souless piece of shit. But hey man, I learned my lesson and now I just don't get hyped for things I don't test anymore. I'd rather pirate a game to test it than falling for hype again. Every genre has it's audience, big or small. I, for example, never played fucking Halo and I really don't intend too. Just because you consider an audience of said game smaller you can't just write it off as irrelevant. Pathfinder is a very complex RPG adaptation and clearly not made for casuals since you have a lot of learning and reading to do to understand how the game works. BG3 is coming along fine, their audience is supporting the hell out of Larian Studios and they have grown since their last game. I didn't get the feeling they were indie by any stretch of imagination. Good gaming companies tend to grow too so that brings a smile to my face. If they ever 'betray' gamers in the future...well, I hope people just stop buying it.

Hollow knight, the outer wilds, hades, dusk etc. Are some the best games I've played in years. He says to play old games and yet doesn't wanna play old pc rts'. I completely understand the apathy towards modern gaming and it's shortcomings over the past decade, but acting like almost nothing good has come out of it is just plain wrong. The man has got to get outside of his own bubble and try some new stuff. Even if he doesn't want to, we still got psychonaughts 2, fh5, halo had fantastic gameplay, metroid dread, no more heroes 3 and so many more titles from the triple a space. All you need to do to see this is true is look at Madden. People can't even successfully organize a boycott on a legit anti-consumer evil exclusive deal that's been going on for almost 20 years now. People can't even have enough restraint to at least buy used copies if they can't resist the urge. The Madden series despite getting worse every year still has the same dumbasses pre-ordering year in year out and it continues to somehow be a top 5 selling game every year. Once gaming became mainstream and AAA budgets ballooned to monstrous proportions this was inevitable. The big production companies are strictly concerned with their shareholders and there is no love or passion for them its only about the bottom line. Games are now at the point that mainstream movies and music is, so it's only the few hidden gems and indies that will be worth playing.
