You will never have a year of releases that gives you the “ps1 and ps2” era feeling. That was a time in your life that exposed you to game experiences you had never experienced before then. Gaming will never give you that feeling again because you’re getting old. It’s depressing I know but I’m willing to bet, if this was the generation you grew up in and there was no social media like back then, you would have very different views on modern gaming. I’m sure 10 year olds today will have nostalgia for Fortnite and five nights at Freddie’s the same way. Getting old blows.
If I had a nickel for every time someone has typed this exact comment...obviously you haven't watched any of my retrospectives. Half of them are reviews of games I'd never played before, and in the case of Thief 2 and Deus Ex, are now some of my favorite games. Even before I started this channel, Xenogears, the classic Resident Evils, and Metroid Prime are just a few games I played over a decade after their release that I loved. Older games are more innovative, more fun, and best of all, have "SOVL". They don't shove modern politics down your throat, no, not even MGS. Maybe I'll make a video about it someday but MGS2 actually predicted the cancer that is the internet today, and certainly wasn't praising it.

There was some controversy surrounding the creation of Medal of Honour back in the 90s. Some people were skeptical that it would be respectful towards those who had served and died in that war, and it took some demonstrations of the game to persuade them. Flash forward 20+ years and you've got games like CoD: Vanguard.

I remember losing it in Vanguard when they gave the sniper chick "Lady Nightingale" as a nickname. It' was peak Mary-Sue schlock: they named her after a songbird because they probably remembered Skyrim made the same mistake in not knowing what nightingales are but it sounded edgy and badass.
Women in war is a joke. We've known this for literally THOUSANDS of years. Their bodies produce higher cortisol levels and have a higher flight rather fight response when adrenaline kicks in. That's setting aside they don't even meet basic PT standards, have lower marksmanship scores in basic training, and can't carry full weight rucksacks or carry an injured comrade off the battlefield. Vanguard is a joke. And that's setting aside that half the guns in it didn't even exist and weren't even produced until long after ww2. And NO MORE RED DOT SIGHTS. I miss when shooters never took the wheel after the start of a mission. Take the OG Ghost Recon for example: each mission drops you into a (usually) open area with objectives, and leaves you to it until you complete the objectives. The only cutscenes occur at the start and end of the missions. SOCOM and Rainbow Six were like this too.

Persona 5 13. Resident Evil 2 Remake 14. Devil May Cry 5 15. Dreams 16. Resident Evil 7 VR 17. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice 18. Bloodborne 19. Elden Ring 20. It takes two 21. Disco Elysium 22. Divinity: Original Sin II 23. Kingdom Come Deliverance There are more but I have to look into them. Some of them I haven't completed but they are amazing.

Psychonauts 2 is my game of the year too.. it has its issues but for someone like me who generally dislikes 3d platformers it absolutely surprised me and surpassed anything else I played through the year..
it was laughably bad in comparison to Psychonauts 1, but then again, unlike Synthetic man, I ignore Triple A's almost entirely (I give non western Triple A's a chance usually) and play a lot of great indie games. I can see how someone would find its painful mediocrity a relief when they're swimming in a sea of trash.
@@zackie8172 Yh, the environments were varied in terms of looks but the entire game boiled down to a platformer, compare that to Psychonauts 1 where you have level design that actually affects the gameplay - Sasha Nein's brain with the 3D cube - Milla Vodello's brain which was a race track - Lung Fish brain with the whole Godzilla theme - The legendary Milkman level - The Napoleon level where you played chess essentially etc Psychonauts 2 is just platformer level reskinned for the 20th time and the writing took a HUUUUUGE nose dive from the first one Definitely not GOTY i agree

I can’t help it, I still love far cry 6 man. Think it’s a combination of the setting and the combat, which I know has bad AI, but am okay with. He wasn’t wrong with saying people who liked 6 accepting the flaws and not ignoring them. I do agree that Maximas Matanzas was the worst part of the game, but I think he went a little overboard with the critique. Like, trans characters aren’t allowed to exist in games without it being cringe? I didn’t get to El Tigre’s part when I was playing so I neither agree or disagree with that. I don’t think wokeness is a particularly bad thing. It’s good to have equality in media. Again, maximas matanzas did suck and that was pretty heavy handed messaging, but I still love the rest of the game.

Children can/should be exposed to say LGBT+ figures in games/tv without bias. People are using the excuse of how they are “pushing” gayness onto children just by existing. I will admit there is some media that is more pro LGBT (which isn’t bad) and some that is anti LGBT. Children should be exposed to this media as long as there is no bias. But like it said people saying stuff like this is based or gay bad or whatever which is very unhelpful. Like people need to stop complaining where there is one gay/trans character. SMH

I will give an honorable mention to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Expectations for that game were quite low after Square Enix's botched Avenger's game, but what we got was actually a very enjoyable experience. It does not really do anything groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it delivers a new take on the Guardians while still managing to retain some of that MCU charm through their dysfunctional teamwork and personalities. The story was really good, to the point where you actually felt like you were watching (and controlling) a superhero TV series or movie. I believe it got best video game story of the year, if I recall correctly. The story did have some cliches, predictable moments, and points where it felt odd, slow, and even hard to follow, but overall I became invested in it more than I do most games. The gameplay is pretty standard and easy to learn to the point where combat can be relatively easy from start to finish, same for the "puzzle" moments. At first I was a bit disappointed when I learned you could only play as Star-Lord, but I think that this is what largely helped Square Enix avoid a repeat of the Avengers game. In the end I think this decision worked wonders. I have mixed feelings on the voice acting at times. If you get annoyed by overexaggerated voice acting, then you might find some of the characters a bit annoying - namely Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, and Gamora. Not a complete turn-away by any means though. Oh, and this game has TONS of dialogue. A lot of it is easily missed especially if you walk forward too far and trigger a new set of dialogue, silencing the one that was already playing. I think that was my biggest pet peeve with the game. The cherry on top, and probably my biggest draw to the game being a huge 80s metalhead, was the soundtrack. Most of them are tracks you have heard in many other games such as GTA, Saints Row, etc. but they work so well here. If nothing else, I'd say that makes it worth it. I am not even a real big Marvel/comic/superhero fan these days, but this game made me care a bit more about the lore, setting, and such. So... yeah. Essay over.
I’ll be honest, i started playing that the other day because it released on gamepass, I don’t personally understand the hype. We’ve watched guardians of the galaxy 10 times already, then we watched the second one. This game doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, sure it’s a solid game, but i think it came out at the wrong time. I didn’t even finish the first mission, it’s just a shoot and smash, walk here, jump, shoot and smash. I found it really dull.
Finished it today. I will attest its super fun but the start is slow. Loved the story tho that's what hooked me and the characters grow on you. Just wished there was more

Sad fact is that now gaming is so mainstream, a large majority of gamers are casuals who think that if a game has good graphics and is advertized on television then it's worth buying. Real gamers, non-casual gamers, know that graphics and fancy CGI trailers don't mean shit because a CGI trailer isn't gameplay footage and good graphics can NOT make a bad game good, but a good game CAN make bad graphics not matter. Anyway fuck AAA games and the people who keep buying them. We used to get good games. Now we mostly just get the gaming equivalent of a Rob Schneider "comedy" 10 times a year. A lowest common denominator pile of garbage designed to wring as much money from casual gamers as possible... and it's usually literally the same identical game as the last one in the franchise but with a couple of new maps/skins.
I'm a casual gamer and graphics isn't all I care about. In fact, story and good gameplay is what I prefer. And I don't watch game trailers either. I prefer playing games with zero expectations and form my own opinions on them. So not all casual gamers are bad my friend. And I say i'm casual because I game once in a while.
This happens to everything once it gains a bit of mainstream acceptance. In the music scene, it's like when a person labeling themselves a "metalhead" says his favorite band is Slipknot, meanwhile he's surrounded by fans of Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Slayer, etc who are all laughing at him.

As a 20 year old with a lot of time and a large interest in gaming, I haven't bought a new game since noita, a year and a half ago.. and it was only $20.. if only the bean counters understood how much revenue they're missing out of with people like me. I learned not to buy a game until I've seen it played, and how others enjoyed it.
I understand your choice, but i'll ask you : where is the surprise? You know already the game... You can even get a refund this days, if you didn't like the game. At my local store, i can keep it for a week

The castle section was visually stunning but now after playing this game four times I can say the castle section is the worst map in village as it was linear for the majority of it's runtime and there were only two good puzzles in that section and one of them was optional and it lacked interesting combat sections too.

I'm playing FC6 right now, and I have fun at times. At other times, I feel like I'm playing a game from the mid 2000s that was written by a bunch of zoomer Reddit NPCs. Most of all, UbiSoft NEEDS to change their shit up. The idea of Far Cry 7 makes my eyes glaze over. How many times can they recycle the Dunia engine? Guess we'll find out!

Inscryption is one of my top games. It almost won GOTY but only won "most innovative idea". Crab game is also a great pc game if you just want to have a good time with your friends. Not award winning, but fun as hell
Unfortunately I was dumb enough to buy into far cry 6, had Alot of fun in the beginning of the game not gonna lie. But man did that b.s. "the American dream doesn't come in our color" I couldn't stomach it after that.
Seriously, the main villain was more likeable than our allies, just because of his charisma. I think they were trying to do what they did with far cry 4 and have no good sides, but they didn't write the characters nearly as well this time.

I really do hate MC's that are strong, yet allow naive weaklings to shit talk them. There's most of the time no reason to not put them in their place. Shit's too common in manga and anime too.
I think that works better if it's done in a nuanced way. Arcane (an animated LoL series) does this in a way where every character's ideals and even strength is challenged. Nobody is a Mary Sue, everyone is flawed. That's just good writing

I completely agree with your take on farcry 6 , i used to be the biggest farcry fan ... I loved every 1 even more than the last (even primal) i even achieved the survival of the fittest for it (100% completion - expert difficulty - survivor mode on - permadeath on) But they started losing me was with 5 , i had never preordered a game in my life but with it being my favorite franchise and me loving every 1 i preordered the hope county edition for 180 dollars ....and bought that book that came out kinda telling the story from the perspective of someone that was from hope county ...and since that edition wouldnt arrive until the afternoon of the day 5 released i also bought the 60 dollar base game digitally ...so trust me when i say NOBODY wanted to love 5 more than me lol , i did love the setting and the idea of the cult taking over and while i had several little issues with it i could overlook most of them but what completely ruined it for me was just how ridiculously easy it was ...even on the new "infamous" difficulty and without getting any health upgrades and turning aim assist and enemy tags off and only using boomer with that god awful regenerating health there was not 1 single part from start to all 3 shitty endings that was even remotely challenging !! So with how disappointing 5 was and how retarded new dawn looked nd was the first fc i skipped and did not play , now il admit i did not play 6 either so i am judging it by its cover but i did not like anything i saw from it not having and difficulty settings to the no skill trees and enemy leveling systems an all the quirky crazy dumb shit and all the damn rpg crap ....i like some rpgs but not every game has to be a rpg!! If I had a nickel for every time someone has typed this exact comment...obviously you haven't watched any of my retrospectives. Half of them are reviews of games I'd never played before, and in the case of Thief 2 and Deus Ex, are now some of my favorite games.
Even before I started this channel, Xenogears, the classic Resident Evils, and Metroid Prime are just a few games I played over a decade after their release that I loved. Older games are more innovative, more fun, and best of all, have "SOVL". They don't shove modern politics down your throat, no, not even MGS. Maybe I'll make a video about it someday but MGS2 actually predicted the cancer that is the internet today, and certainly wasn't praising it.

When I played Far Cry 6 I actually cheered for the Dictator guy because of how bad-written and woke the protagonists were.
The only characters that i liked was Dani, Anton and Diego, i bought the bundle (with far cry 3,4,5 and 6) and well far cry 4 is pretty good but i dind't like kyrat (comparing hope County) but i really liked the gameplay

Right after I watched the Vanguard Stalingrad mission, I went and watched CoD:WaW's Stalingrad mission as a palate cleanser.
I remember losing it in Vanguard when they gave the sniper chick "Lady Nightingale" as a nickname. It' was peak Mary-Sue schlock: they named her after a songbird because they probably remembered Skyrim made the same mistake in not knowing what nightingales are but it sounded edgy and badass.
Women in war is a joke. We've known this for literally THOUSANDS of years. Their bodies produce higher cortisol levels and have a higher flight rather fight response when adrenaline kicks in. It's ingrained Evolutionary to survive and continue reproducing to maintain the species. That's setting aside they don't even meet basic PT standards, have lower marksmanship scores in basic training, and can't carry full weight rucksacks or carry an injured comrade off the battlefield.
Vanguard is a joke. And that's setting aside that half the guns in it didn't even exist and weren't even produced until long after ww2. And NO MORE RED DOT SIGHTS. THEY DIDNT EXIST EXCEPT ON AIRPLANES. Not even Vietnam had red dot sights except on some sniper rifles.

I miss when shooters never took the wheel after the start of a mission. Take the OG Ghost Recon for example: each mission drops you into a (usually) open area with objectives, and leaves you to it until you complete the objectives. The only cutscenes occur at the start and end of the missions. SOCOM and Rainbow Six were like this too.

Psychonauts 2 is my game of the year too.. it has its issues but for someone like me who generally dislikes 3d platformers it absolutely surprised me and surpassed anything else I played through the year..
The story was way too bad for me, enough to ruin the whole experience.
it was laughably bad in comparison to Psychonauts 1, but then again, unlike Synthetic man, I ignore Triple A's almost entirely (I give non western Triple A's a chance usually) and play a lot of great indie games. I can see how someone would find its painful mediocrity a relief when they're swimming in a sea of trash.

- The legendary Milkman level
- The Napoleon level where you played chess essentially

I can’t help it, I still love far cry 6 man. Think it’s a combination of the setting and the combat, which I know has bad AI, but am okay with. He wasn’t wrong with saying people who liked 6 accepting the flaws and not ignoring them. I do agree that Maximas Matanzas was the worst part of the game, but I think he went a little overboard with the critique. Like, trans characters aren’t allowed to exist in games without it being cringe? I didn’t get to El Tigre’s part when I was playing so I neither agree or disagree with that. I don’t think wokeness is a particularly bad thing. It’s good to have equality in media. Again, maximas matanzas did suck and that was pretty heavy handed messaging, but I still love the rest of the game.

Children can/should be exposed to say LGBT+ figures in games/tv without bias. People are using the excuse of how they are “pushing” gayness onto children just by existing. I will admit there is some media that is more pro LGBT (which isn’t bad) and some that is anti LGBT. Children should be exposed to this media as long as there is no bias. But like it said people saying stuff like this is based or gay bad or whatever which is very unhelpful. Like people need to stop complaining where there is one gay/trans character. SMH

I will give an honorable mention to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Expectations for that game were quite low after Square Enix's botched Avenger's game, but what we got was actually a very enjoyable experience. It does not really do anything groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it delivers a new take on the Guardians while still managing to retain some of that MCU charm through their dysfunctional teamwork and personalities. The story was really good, to the point where you actually felt like you were watching (and controlling) a superhero TV series or movie. I believe it got best video game story of the year, if I recall correctly. The story did have some cliches, predictable moments, and points where it felt odd, slow, and even hard to follow, but overall I became invested in it more than I do most games. The gameplay is pretty standard and easy to learn to the point where combat can be relatively easy from start to finish, same for the "puzzle" moments. At first I was a bit disappointed when I learned you could only play as Star-Lord, but I think that this is what largely helped Square Enix avoid a repeat of the Avengers game. In the end I think this decision worked wonders. I have mixed feelings on the voice acting at times. If you get annoyed by overexaggerated voice acting, then you might find some of the characters a bit annoying - namely Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, and Gamora. Not a complete turn-away by any means though. Oh, and this game has TONS of dialogue. A lot of it is easily missed especially if you walk forward too far and trigger a new set of dialogue, silencing the one that was already playing. I think that was my biggest pet peeve with the game. The cherry on top, and probably my biggest draw to the game being a huge 80s metalhead, was the soundtrack. Most of them are tracks you have heard in many other games such as GTA, Saints Row, etc. but they work so well here. If nothing else, I'd say that makes it worth it. I am not even a real big Marvel/comic/superhero fan these days, but this game made me care a bit more about the lore, setting, and such.

I’ll be honest, i started playing that the other day because it released on gamepass, I don’t personally understand the hype.
We’ve watched guardians of the galaxy 10 times already, then we watched the second one. This game doesn’t do anything groundbreaking, sure it’s a solid game, but i think it came out at the wrong time. I didn’t even finish the first mission, it’s just a shoot and smash, walk here, jump, shoot and smash.
I found it really dull.

Sad fact is that now gaming is so mainstream, a large majority of gamers are casuals who think that if a game has good graphics and is advertized on television then it's worth buying. Real gamers, non-casual gamers, know that graphics and fancy CGI trailers don't mean shit because a CGI trailer isn't gameplay footage and good graphics can NOT make a bad game good, but a good game CAN make bad graphics not matter.
Anyway fuck AAA games and the people who keep buying them. We used to get good games. Now we mostly just get the gaming equivalent of a Rob Schneider "comedy" 10 times a year. A lowest common denominator pile of garbage designed to wring as much money from casual gamers as possible... and it's usually literally the same identical game as the last one in the franchise but with a couple of new maps/skins.
I'm a casual gamer and graphics isn't all I care about. In fact, story and good gameplay is what I prefer. And I don't watch game trailers either. I prefer playing games with zero expectations and form my own opinions on them. So not all casual gamers are bad my friend. And I say i'm casual because I game once in a while.
The thing is, game developers now lives under the assumption that they need to be making 60-70 dollar interactive movies

As a 20 year old with a lot of time and a large interest in gaming, I haven't bought a new game since noita, a year and a half ago.. and it was only $20.. if only the bean counters understood how much revenue they're missing out of with people like me. I learned not to buy a game until I've seen it played, and how others enjoyed it.

The castle section was visually stunning but now after playing this game four times I can say the castle section is the worst map in village as it was linear for the majority of it's runtime and there were only two good puzzles in that section and one of them was optional and it lacked interesting combat sections too.

Halo Infinite, Metroid Dread are my two GOTY. Both games offer the pinnacle of gameplay and joy in just simply playing the game.

Seriously, the main villain was more likeable than our allies, just because of his charisma. I think they were trying to do what they did with far cry 4 and have no good sides, but they didn't write the characters nearly as well this time.

I completely agree with your take on farcry 6 , i used to be the biggest farcry fan ... I loved every 1 even more than the last (even primal) i even achieved the survival of the fittest for it (100% completion - expert difficulty - survivor mode on - permadeath on) But they started losing me was with 5 , i had never preordered a game in my life but with it being my favorite franchise and me loving every 1 i preordered the hope county edition for 180 dollars ....and bought that book that came out kinda telling the story from the perspective of someone that was from hope county ...and since that edition wouldnt arrive until the afternoon of the day 5 released i also bought the 60 dollar base game digitally ...so trust me when i say NOBODY wanted to love 5 more than me lol , i did love the setting and the idea of the cult taking over and while i had several little issues with it i could overlook most of them but what completely ruined it for me was just how ridiculously easy it was ...even on the new "infamous" difficulty and without getting any health upgrades and turning aim assist and enemy tags off and only using boomer with that god awful regenerating health there was not 1 single part from start to all 3 shitty endings that was even remotely challenging !!

100% of the time they are stereotypes. It happens when you have WHITE progressive writers who most likely never met an ACTUAL minority from ANOTHER country in their life, just another hipster.
I don’t think people have problem with diversity itself, I think people dislike it because of how it’s implemented not the people them selves, in my opinion The first saints row did diversity very well, every member of the saints were different races and were likable characters. If you think about it games back then were just as diverse compared to newer ones today, just that the new games push it in your face.
