Wonderful. It shows that all these guys of FDNY have a good personality. If you live in New York be proud of these firefighters you have there. Everything they do,they do it for you and tp keep their town save. Guys continue you're job you are real heroes.
Greatest video on youtube!!! I watch this all the time hopefully one day I will be there at The Rock training with the greatest fireman in the world!! FDNY you rock the rock!
Hey man, thanks for the video. Been waiting over 2 years for my spot in the academy, and im finally gonna get it come January. Been training my butt off, and when i come home at night, i watch this video to remind me why. Thanks a lot.
Joseph, in answer to your question, its a long process to get the job. The test is typically only given every 3-5 years, and then roughly 30,000 candidates take it. Only the top 5000 scorers will typically have a chance at the job, if they complete a battery of tests including a background investigation, psych test, physical test, and an exhaustive medical exam. Typically candidates will wait AT LEAST a year and a half for the job, even if they are the very top scorers on the written exam.
@24tanman good for your dad, pop-time will get you really far as a fireman. keep it up. have a nice career. if you could even make it through 18 weeks.
@MLopez0311 its great you were in the Marine Corps the best fighting force in the world and now your going to join the best firefighting force in the world. im finally going back to the The Rock again to brush up. good luck in the academy. your not a former Marine once you get past bootcamp your a Marine for life. Oorah. Semper Fi.
wish they would have our department go through that training so I wouldn't be the only fit firefighter who doesnt run out of breath! Guess that's volunteers for ya, kick ass video!
I have a question for the FDNY guys. Is the training any diff for the ladder/truck co. ff's vs the engine co. ff's or is it the same? And what determines your assignment to a truck vs an engine? Don't mean to ask dumb questions but I work at a small dept with only 4 companies, 3 engine and 1 ladder, and we interchange from shift to shift. Our training was the basics of both functions. FDNY firefighters are awesome. Watching vids about FDNY make me proud to be a firefighter even if we are small.
Sorry, the first part of this was cut out. I live in Queens, so living in the 5 boros got me 5 points toward my final total. My boy from Massapequa didn't get that 5 extra. You get extra points for city recidency, military service, and having a family member who was FDNY and died in LOD.
18... they bring in a huge class every 4 years however due to the economy right now their in a hiring freeze.... I'm 99% certain that they put small classes through every year to
that might be helpful once your already on the job but all you need is 15 college credits (or 1 year prior work experience). They will teach you Certified First Responder while in the academy. There is no need to go above that certification unless for side work.
I think they're trying to train them not do drop the nozzle. FDNY uses mostly smooth bore nozzles. When you drop one it can distort the shape of the tip (should be round.) When that happens it can poorly affect the fire stream, which can make it less effective. Not to mention the nozzle then needs to be replaced.
I think the cut/drop rate is 20%. We Started with 314 and graduated 265, but about 25 people resigned in the first few weeks in the field. Yes they do get cut and some people resign or can't take the heat.
The next open competitive firefighter exam is Jan 2011. You can file for this exam at the end of 2010. Once you pass, they put you on an eligible list. You'll be waiting like two or three years before appointment. For questions, call here before 4pm EST: (718) 999-FDNY. Good luck!
THis video rocks!!! Im applying for FDNY in 2011. I been working for two different departments in Kentucky and been on the job for three years now. I love every second of it. I have more certs then I know what to do with. Does anyone from FDNY know whats covered in probie school??? Im just wondering to see if its anything like what we go through, lol. I hate having the knowledge of the job and not being able to use it!!!! I have lost so many skills since I am not using them. Its sad!!! Stay safe
Some do. This job is not for everyone. I knew a guy who resigned after 7 months, just 2 more months left in his probie period. Of course, he is now in med school, so it works out. It happens.
But one of my friends lives in Massapequa, LI and got in the first calss off that list a full 1 1/2 years before I was called (list #331, I think?). So living in NYC only counts toward the DCAS, who run all civil service testin in the city. To get to probie school, score higher, better chances.
So let me get this straight. You take the entrance and exam and it may or may not take them up to 4 years to call you depending on your score, then you go through probie school and if you get through it with high enough scores then you might get assigned to a truck. How long does it normally take to get assigned to a truck.
Actually, it is possible for a 5 year wait. With the dispute over this past test, people from list 2043 (test I took in Dec. 2002) were being called in the first class of '08. Also if this dispute or lawsuit (or whatever the fuck it was people are bitching about the new test) continues they may possibly exhaust list 2043. The class that went in July 1st has I believe a few from 2043 and the top scorers from this new test, and the EMT promotionals. So a list can be active for more than 4 years.
So I'm guessing they don't use foam very much either. Yea I can see the steam part of it though. Our instructor steamed us good the other day in a burn.
i'VE got a question? His that the department that place you in a fire house after your probies class? or you can ask to where you whant to be..ex; manhattan engines 54? or you do know?
What would be my best chances at the FDNY, because I'm planning on majoring Fire Science and then becoming a paramedic would that be a good chance on getting on the job?
I hope you can run...day 1 mile and a half run in under 12 min, 4 pullups, 30 pushups, 30 situps or ur out. thats the easy part....keep your mouth shut and ur eyes and ears open.
Wonderful. It shows that all these guys of FDNY have a good personality. If you live in New York be proud of these firefighters you have there. Everything they do,they do it for you and tp keep their town save. Guys continue you're job you are real heroes.
Can't you people just enjoy the video and show some respect? It's a joy to watch...period. God bless the FDNY.
Greatest video on youtube!!! I watch this all the time hopefully one day I will be there at The Rock training with the greatest fireman in the world!! FDNY you rock the rock!
This is the best video ive seen shot at randalls. Great job!

Thanks a lot.
As a former usmc service member... I look forward to being trained to save a life rather than to take one... fdny here I come... best job in the world
Woo, what a great video! It helps me to review my job and think about the issues beyond the money. (Fireman in Hong Kong) Thanks again.
I can't wait this video gets me so pumped I'm goin in in January I'm 5th Generation FDNY

Im thinking about joining the FDNY because i like the way the coats and pants are designed, the reflector colors

proud to be a firefighter whether it be professional or volunteer
Oh ok. Thanks for answering my questions.
wish they would have our department go through that training so I wouldn't be the only fit firefighter who doesnt run out of breath! Guess that's volunteers for ya, kick ass video!
amazing video two thumbs up
thanks man! but all ive gotten myself to is the starting line! :) cant wait till im on the job.
Deficiencies in different classes such as ropes, SCBA, and PT...it lets the instructors know that you need a little "extra attention"
awesome video

Well done.
in the fdny you start of in a engine company, after about one year I believe you can transfer to a truck co if you choose too

FDNY is mi goal in the future
3:30 "But look they gave me these nice stickers" lol
@nicyjones
the reason we're taught not to drop the nozzle is because another company will not hesitate to pick it up. then you're shit out of luck.
very nice video :)
good luck and greeting
form the fire brigade in germany

No, US citizenship is necessary for appointment.

its very tough to become an fdny firefighter i know guys that took them at least 5 years before they entered the rock
great class =D
Yeah didn't figure it would matter much. Everything is different in New York
@MegaDemonte yes.
not all the time traditionally with the new york city fire dept the taller guys are put on the trucks and shorter guys on engines.
if your a firefighter. you are professional.
Im hoping one day i will be part of that group of people wanting to be in the FDNY
my future
Some do. This job is not for everyone. I knew a guy who resigned after 7 months, just 2 more months left in his probie period. Of course, he is now in med school, so it works out. It happens.

i'VE got a question? His that the department that place you in a fire house after your probies class? or you can ask to where you whant to be..ex; manhattan engines 54? or you do know?
