A buddy of mine rented a house from Brad Gillis in California about a decade ago. He told me he's a nice guy along as well as being a talented musician. But most people don't pick up on the subtleties that Ozzy's voice has thrown in there. It's easy to think he's not "doing much", but he's really talented with going to that "edge" without actually going completely over to the point of his voice cracking. One thing is having me wonder: where's Ozzy's preamp EQ's set at and I think I hear a touch of flange or chorus effect along with a really "close" delay and reverb effect. I was wondering: does he have a delay set to repeat by milliseconds after the initial attack? Basically: is it delay (with a fast setting) that gives him that "full" or almost-doubled sound to his voice, or maybe it's compression and I'm way off?.. I know effects and eq's don't add to your sound but actually only embezzle the quality of your voice (I've heard that one many times over the years). I'm mostly a guitar guy and I know very little in adding effects to vocals and possibly vocal effects and eq settings would make an interesting video for a future topic (if you haven't covered that already). Anyway, all I know really about vocals and how they're recorded is a lot of vocal tracks are overly saturated with reverb and delay and you usually can't tell until the vocal tracks are completely isolated from all the rest of the instruments. I'm giving "lead vocalist" a go and instead of just the standard of offering a band a pa system with me on the job, I'm offering my services for any band mates in need of a decent guitar/bass tech or any other luthier services needed.... Now only if I could only get better with my singing and keep on practicing, MAYBE I might land a gig. But if you got pointers for someone with a low voice to sing in a higher registry (only so bands won't need to de-tune for me), I'm all ears for your advice AND if you got tips for sweetening the sound with eq or effects, I'm game too. Sorry about the long read.

Long post lol also I'm not a pro or anything, but I think he uses harmonic singing style cause I've heard acapellas and you still hear the double notes in his voice. It's kinda remarkable to be honest cause he's an average singer, but his tone makes up for it. The studio recordings do have reverb and other effects though, but if you go back to his early performances you definitely hear the harmonics in his voice.

My "what made Ozzy great" moment was in the early 80's, coming home from the record store with Blizzard in tow. After getting home and taking the record out of the sleeve and placing it on the turntable not knowing what to expect. Here he is, his first solo effort after going his separate way from a very successful Black Sabbath. I place the needle on the LP, looking at the album cover. The first song: "I don't know". After the first notes of Randy Rhodes ripping out the opening riff, I was sold. That first listen of Blizzard was one that time stood still. I was overwhelmed with the raw power of Randy Rhodes guitar, tastefully intertwined with his classical creativity. Could Ozzy have done it himself? I'm going with no. Geezer Butler was the lyrist with Sabbath and Bob Daisley was filled the shoes with Ozzy's solo career.
Much kudos to Brad Gillis in his short stint with Ozzy as he was put in an impossible situation. Not because it was Brad, but because he wasn't Randy. No matter who it was filling in would have been in the situation. Ozzy still reeling from the untimely passing of Randy, Brad gets a phone call by Ozzy's manager, Sharon Arden. Ozzy gets on the phone with Brad to fly him out to NY to audition, and gave him the setlist to learn in roughly 24 hours. I will say, he pulled it off. Did he play the songs and solos exactly like Randy? No, but either did Jake E Lee, Zakk Wylde or Gus G. What Brad did do is what Ozzy wanted him to do.
Ozzy made a very successful solo career for himself (with the help on Sharon). My opinion is he should have packed it in years ago. He should have went out flying high (no pun intended) instead of trying to tour with his declining health.

Clap your f”ing hands!! Lol! Ozzy is a madman! His voice is so unique and cuts right to the heart of the songs and music! In tandem with a bevy of shredding guitarists dating back to dawn of Heavy Metal with Uncle Tony, Saint Randy, and Zack attack. There is no one who better exemplifies the metal warrior ethos than the Oz Man!! Woohoo!!!

    Legend and longevity.
    Ozzy in namesake alone rivals
    Elvis.
    Pioneering Heavy Metal vocal
    And never compromising through
    Almost 6 decades 😳
I would say Ozzy and Robert Plant
Are the foundation for every vocal that followed in Rock History.
    Thank you Ken
As always Hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe.

When I was a kid my mom would regularly take a slower route back from the store or just take a couple laps around the block in our town when a song came on the radio and she wanted to hear the whole thing. But the only time my dad ever did this was when Ozzy or Black Sabbath was on the radio. He was always a big fan ❤️

I am pretty sure you're correct Ken. Bob Daisleywrote the lyrics to Crazy Train. That is indeed Rudy Sarzo on bass too. At this point Ozzy had some very off days with his voice. I remember seeing a video of the Randy Rhoads line up and he shakes his head in anger at one point where his voice is cracking on the chorus.

I saw Ozzy Live a couple of years ago, 2018 before COVID and even back then, and I think he was late 60's or even early 70's and although he didn't walk back and forth much, he just stood there, I guess that was after all his med's were prescribed calming him down, but he was still great at that point. It was a festival in Texas, and Stone Sour, was with him. Zakk Wylde played for him, was with him for the No More Tours 2 tour and it was great. He still hit all those high notes, there wasn't much he didn't do. It was such a great show. Only thing is I'm not a fan of Zak's kilt.

I think that alot of people characterize Ozzy as a poor singer because of his many poor live performances that are available on the net. However, if you have ever tried singing one of his songs, particularly Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, you will know how incredibly difficult it can be. The fact that many of his vocals on the first album were completed in one day and one take is amazing. Despite having a less-than-stellar technique, he manages to hit many notes high in the tenor range (like high A's, B's and even a high E on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath).

The name you were looking for is Bob Daisley not Daily. Also there is four instrumentalists in the clip of Crazy Train. You missed Don Airey on keyboards. You can see him to the left when they pan across Tommy Aldridge on the upper level.
