I guess it’s more like a Kid A/Amnesiac-situation, where they recorded the material for both albums at the same time and then grouped the tracks that would fit together in two piles.
I think its reasonable to assume given the name and how the tracklist features just eyes and mouth, one of the first songs the smile ever workshopped but missed out on 2 albums thus far. not to mention dont get me started and foreign spies feel underdone to me
@@hotlettuce14 The title comes from a lyric in Zero Sum. And Jonny of Thom have since the early Radiohead-days been roadtesting songs that didn't find their place on an album until many albums later.

@@gorskiy1 I agree. I wonder if Anthony was thinking about the cover for Discipline when he said Red instead of the album name itself, being Discipline. There's such a confidence in being the front a center of a song while playing those relentless frenzy of notes. Definitely dug Zero Sum a lot.

Yeah I dont know what Fantano is smoking, Dont Get Me Started is fucking awesome. Specially when the drums come in and the " your voice means nothing" outro
The difference between the live and the studio version is insane. I don't know why but I think they decided to record the drums in this "muffled" way, removing a lot of the low frequenzies , resulting in a loss of the kick effect to the kick lol. Live it's more of a dance song, hearing that big kick in your chest
That comment section. You know most of them weren’t even listening, they were too busy thinking up a clever negative comment…and comparing what they’re hearing to RHCP, the smiths and the stokes (may have been more), 3 VERY different bands, bands that sound nothing like what was playing
I'm loving more the more I listen to it. Its definitely a grower. If I'm having a shower in the morning I go to KOL and Moon SP before any of their other stuff. Soooo good.
I’m happy Fantano and giggens like it. It’s just that chat go along with the way Fantano might be acting towards the track like when he made those national geography jokes, the votes dropped.
@misterbowlerhat he can play the magical pink skin flute for all I care, if your a fan of his opinions you most likely don't have an original opinion of your own 😅
contrary to popular belief, I'm beginning to believe this is Jonny Greenwood's scrap material band and NOT Thom's.. I don't think Jonny is a lyricist (as far as I know) but that is Thom's main contribution. They're all equals in the Smile but I read/hear a lot of "this is Thom's extra stuff" but its actually Jonny's..
It’s pretty even across the board, imo. There are plenty of songs that melodically sound like Thom Yorke compositions. That’s being said, these two are Jonny’s for sure. And it certainly isn’t scrap material by any stretch.
Why isn’t anyone talking about their lyrics? "Don’t Get Me Started" feels like a response to the Israel-Palestine conflict and helped me undertand Yorke more.
@bugsbunnywearingasmoking801 Yes, you're right. The Smile is a garage band. Make an album, go and play it. Radiohead is a production. Make an album, promote, sell, pay outside entities, getting the whole band together. I agree with you. Freedom
The older I get, the less I give a fuck about what people think about the music I love. Music is art and will hit every person differently. The music I don't like, is not bad because I don't like it, it has value for someone. Listening to a pretentious snob give his "opinion" on music is meaningless. One of my favourite sayings about critics - Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it's done, they've seen it done every day, but they're unable to do it themselves.
Thom usually uses hardware synths which can sometimes lag behind their VST counterparts in a few areas. Analog synths in general trade fidelity for a warm and lofi sound. But they're DEFINITELY not cheaper.
Foreign Spies hits you after multiple listens. And then it's crushingly beautiful.
Cutouts isn't a B side album. People confidently jump to conclusions based on almost no information lol

Iean, he looks like that Sonic villain.
Fr, mf said "they're B sides" cuz they're called cutouts, just another way to shit on it.
Solid couple of singles. Zero sum is a sick track.
Zero sum has King Crimson vibes like Read the room. you know, this Robert Fripp'ish buzzing guitar and weird rhythms

Comparing Thom Yorke to tame impala is like comparing Greta van fleet to led zeppelin Fantano is one big walking L
They didn't hear "The Slip" yet?
There's no way to listen to it officially without owning the vinyl. Doubt he cares enough to seek it out.
Zero Sum needs to go on much longer, why did they end it so abruptly? it was worthy of another 2 mins at least
