You questioned what it might be like to see Radiohead live, well this is a quote from an interview with the band; Colin Greenwood: There’s one show from that tour that comes to mind. We were in the middle of an encore of “No Surprises” and Thom went into the audience. Thom drifts into the middle of this crowd of 10,000 or so people, and he just starts burrowing into the ground. Like, really tunneling. And as the song goes on he’s getting deeper, and people are following him down there. Eventually, the whole audience had followed him down into that bottomless hole, and we were all alone onstage. Three days later, Thom emerged alone from the tunnel cradling a dove, nobody else with him. Actually, no one from that audience was ever seen again. That was an amazing show.

People didn't expect Kid A after OK Computer, but the clues were there as early as The Bends: that Radiohead was going to transform into something quite different from where they started out. A lot of Radiohead fans freaked out and didn't know what to think when this came out of nowhere in 2000. Most I think have since come around, and embraced the new direction, and now appreciate how much Radiohead evolves with each album they put out. But what it really comes down to is Thom didn't want to be a rock star, and Johnny was never going to _just_ be a guitarist. They're both crazy talented musicians in general (not to discount the very significant contributions from the other three members of the band), and their goal is just to make great music, regardless of the neat little boxes of music genres that labels try to force bands into. I just want to say quick that i have really bad ptsd and for some reason i was super able to empathize with you over this album. I’ve loved it for quite some time but the ptsd kind of cuts off a lot of access to feelings and gets buried in this protective shell. I also make music. Or used to. I was pretty awesome. It literally was almost a therapy-esque breakthrough for me to watch this. I connect with super genuine people and can’t stand anyone who isn’t. It released quite a bit of my heart to see someone feel great music right. As a musician myself… who stopped… you may have recharged me to do it again. Thank you for being so real and vulnerable. This album is heaven.
wow wow wow. this means more to me than I could ever explain. to be able to have inspired you to maybe start up music again is something I never thought I would do! you are so awesome and I am so excited for you to pursue it again. thank YOU for being so real & vulnerable. you've inspired me to keep on exploring the world of music as much as I can!!! so thank You!!!
Thank you for your reaction. I bought this album day one when it came out and your video makes me remember how I felt when I heard Kid A for the first time. It was so emotional too. Thanks again.
Idioteque will forever be one of radioheads most underrated songs and one of the best written songs ever. It's so cold and horrifying, those forever beating drums and the droning feel so urgent. Thoms vocals are horrifying, like he's screaming for help but lost all hope at the same time. This song will forever capture the true horror enormity of an apocalypse. "women and children first." "ice age coming, ice age coming." those lyrics will forever be drilled into my head. This song truly feels like THE Kid A song, and feels like the perfect song to describe this album.
I was 15 when this album dropped. A sophomore metalhead-cybergoth-shoegaze-hardcore punk kid. Very familiar with their previous work. I was fuckin BLOWN AWAY.
It's comforting to witness someone else experiencing music the same way I do. I'm sorry it was difficult for you, but I also get the impression that once you've processed it you won't regret this experience for a second. Thank you for sharing. People think I'm crazy when music affects me so deeply. Maybe... :-)
I love your reaction and I love all the supportive comments you're receiving. I've not seen such an earnest thread on this platform. Keep up the great work!
Whenever I hear motion picture soundtrack being played I think of this cover by a brass band at a young lads funeral. In the breaks of the song all you can hear is sobbing, possibly one of the saddest videos on youtube. Insta waterfalls
I don’t know if you’re gonna want to hear this, but you will probably never get over How To Disappear… doesn’t matter how many times I’ve heard it over how many years - hits me just the same. It destroys.
also you should definitely check out godspeed you! black emperor if you haven't already, they have some lengthy songs but they're oh so worth it 😭💞 I'd start with their album "lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven"
It's easy to forget just how much of a CURVE ball this was at the time given Radiohead were Indie darlings after Ok Computer and the anticipation for Kid A was massive! They could so easily have just gone for an Ok Computer Part 2 and knocked it out of the park but the fact they chose to just completely go in a crazy direction was so surprising but also exciting at the time. It seriously felt like it was way ahead of it's time when it came out. And on a side not - How to Disappear Completely is one of the most haunting and most gorgeous songs ever made.
So, the last two songs have a unique thing to them. Motion Picture Soundtrack is basically a suicide note, and the last lines are "I will see you in the next life." On the original release, there was a long silence after it ends, and "Untitled" was a hidden track on the CD (it didn't have a track, it was part of MPS). It's basically the sound of the narrator from MPS being reborn. If you played the album on a loop, you would then be reincarnated right into Everything in It's Right Place. Streaming services ruined that.
KTG, you are a fucking gift! I really, really enjoy your reactions to Radiohead. You have a damn good vocabulary and I appreciate that. I know you wish you could use more of it but you feel encumbered with the feelings the songs give you ha ha. Is there any way to watch reactions to the entire songs?!?! I’d subscribe to that in a heartbeat. Thank you for being so cool and open and real! Cheers (ps- The National Anthem on SNL is rad and Idioteque live from Glastonbury is as well!)
Would defo recommend "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Absolutely mind bending album where each song is 20 minutes long and messes with your emotions.
It's funny you comment about him singing "sucking a lemon" and it sounding so good I remember seeing them live in 2016 and being nearly in tears during this song at that moment. Getting chills now just thinking about it. It's remarkable.
Motion Picture Soundtrack and How to Disappear Completely are by far my favorites off this album. And on top of that they are some of the best songs I've ever heard 😊
If I could take anyone to a Radiohead concert who’s never been before and whom I’ve never met, it would be you. I’ve seen them live 3 times including the tour for kid a, and it’s magical. And your reactions here tell me you would be transported. Thanks for listening and reacting to this album and sharing with us
Somehow you came up in my algorithm, and I am so glad. Watching your varied reactions and your emotions as you experienced this masterpiece for the first time made me feel so good. Its such a special collection of magical songs. If you are taking suggestions, I would name Jeff Buckley : Grace, or Cursive: The Ugly Organ. Both are incredible.
"I feel like it cant get any worse than what already happened".. Right before motion picture.. Omg.. This song.. Every time.. Hits just as hard as it ever has.. It gets me all sentimental and teary.. This song reminds me of home.. Which is far away.. And all the hardships we as people have gone through, religion and its bad and good.. How we geathered in song... How we harmed in name of god.. And how the song gets heavenly.. Feel like thats acceptence of the final.. Embracing death.. An end to all the hardships.. And joys of companionship.. Just.. Fade..
ok thats it YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO HAPPY MUSIC ONLY STARTING NOW. Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay is a really cool pop album that came out weeks ago, highly recommend for a fun listen!
Don't sleep on Amnesiac, it goes hand in hand with Kid A as they were recorded all in the same sessions. I personally think there are songs on Amnesiac that I like more than everything on Kid A but its not a popular opinion.
Yeah Treefingers is amazing, it's cool to see that acknowledged. And it's made from guitars with effects which is even more impressive. Radiohead went yeah here you go, have an ambient track too and it's one of the best ambient tracks ever. Totally immerses you in the world of this album. That track got me into ambient music and still one of my favorites
i love your reactions 💯.. i had lucky to hear radiohead since pablo honey and see how they evol over the years, kid a was such a mind blowing experience at the time and it keeps feeling the same 24 years later.
I was in a crowd when they played How To Disappear Completely and it was super emotional because they dedicated the song to all the disappeared people during the 70's in Argentina (we were under a dictatorship lead by General Videla) . Not to mention it was the first time they came to Argentina in 2009 the show was mind blowing, best concert I've ever been in my life.
Girl this is exactly how I listen to Kid A (and Radiohead at large) lol. You get me. In my opinion this is their best work, it blows my mind every listen, however The Bends is my favorite from the band because of all the memories I have attached to it. I’ll definitely be checking out that reaction next!
I'm a xennial and Radiohead was central to my life and social group from when I was in junior high through my late 20s. It brings me so much joy to watch gen Z experience Radiohead's music for the first time. If only you could have experienced them live on their Kid A tour. I was changed from that experience.
2:21 & 4:52 & 5:55 it’s so beautiful to see those first moments where someone stops resisting the raw , haunting futuristic emotion of the album and just lets it all go flowing all throughout them
their energy is so good when doing the national anthem live and the brass section really adds something to the performance each time. also jonny mixes in bits of whatever radio broadcast he finds at the time when doing it live so it's always a bit different.
Love your reactions to Radiohead, I appreciate how genuine you are and how you don't even try to hold back what you're feeling. (Or you don't seem to at least) I've been feeling those feelings about them for 20+ years now. One note about something you said during Kid A, I think the "rats and children following" is a reference to the Pied Piper fairy tail. So its not something he just made up for the song. If you enjoy Radiohead's albums you should react to The Smile as well. Radiohead is on a hiatus and The Smile is something some of the members are doing in the meantime. It definitely still feels like Radiohead even if it's not Radiohead in name.
Many of the lyrics only have meaning in the abstract. It was written using something called the cut up technique where Thom would write lyrics cut them into strips and put them back together in novel ways. This lends to the fractured cold emotional atmosphere of the album. Also on National anthem and other songs they run Thoms voice through a vintage instrument Johnny uses called the ondes Martenot which is played throughout the album. The idea is after OK Computer Thom was very sick of his own voice and wanted to alter it. Honestly I could go on all day about this album but I'll leave it there
What an album!! I got gifted the album at 11 years of age by my neighbour, and I've been listening to it ever since!! Definitely that one album that got me into Radiohead :))
Great reaction video. I saw Radiohead in their home town of Oxford in 2001, and it rained throughout How To Disappear Completely. It was probably one of the best moments of my life. It was spiritual, emotional and ethereal. If you ever get to see them live, please do. Your reactions to Radiohead reflect what practically every Radiohead fan experiences when listening to their material. It's like a punch to the stomach. It's so beautiful, it feels like it's too much and you can't handle it. I fell asleep listening to the Kid A album once, and had the WIERDEST dream while How To Disappear Completely. I was in the REM state of consciousness and I literally felt like I was flying. Seriously, go listen to OK Computer, The Bends, Kid A and A Moon Shaped Pool in a dark room with headphones from beginning to end. It will blow your mind
i think you should listen to amsp last. there’s a possibility that it could be their last album and it’s radiohead at its most mature (also imo their saddest album lol 😭) i recommend listening to hail to the thief and the bends and the king of limbs and amnesiac first and THEN ending it all with amsp
Enjoying your heartfelt reactions and passion for music. A recommendation for listening....R.E.M.'s "Automatic For The People." (Radiohead are big, BIG fans of R.E.M. and they mentored Radiohead, even inviting them to open for them in concert in 1995. The song "How To Disappear Completely" was based on advice R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe gave to Thom Yorke in regards to how to deal with fame.
Story time: There was so much anticipation for this album. The Bends was awesome, and OK Computer was soooo good... my friends and I were huge fans and worried that they would not be able to make lightning strike in the same place again. The day that Kid A came out, I had to drive 500 km with two friends of mine. We got into the car and my friend pulled out the Kid A CD that he had bought earlier in the day, and as we got onto the highway we hit play and the three of us listened to it for the first time. Words cannot describe the feeling I got when those first five notes dropped -- it was perfection. They hit it out of the park.
Kid A hits like a truck, specially during hard times. I have some stories with the album, and let me say this: hearing how to disapear makes you realize, during that moment in life, that you are absolutely not alone in this. It makes everything better in some way

Love your reactions. You are great. Keep 'em coming 🙂
Thanks again.
i went here to see her reaction but ended up vibing with her like it was my first time listening to it💀😭😭
I can't wait till you get to Amnesiac, with Pyramid Song. I swear that song is a portal to an alternative universe
The video enhances it...& that's rare.
@@ph8077 Absolutely! Chilling.
I envy anyone getting to hear Radiohead for the first time. Especially How To Disappear Completely.
I was 15 when this album dropped. A sophomore metalhead-cybergoth-shoegaze-hardcore punk kid. Very familiar with their previous work. I was fuckin BLOWN AWAY.
There’s nothing better than Kid A
OK computer and in rainbows objectively, but personally I love kid a sm.
you should listen to nick drake- pink moon
LISTEN TO THE WHOLE ALBUM
@@swimdog thats what i was going for haha, the album for sure
How To Disappear Completely. Stunning.
It's comforting to witness someone else experiencing music the same way I do. I'm sorry it was difficult for you, but I also get the impression that once you've processed it you won't regret this experience for a second. Thank you for sharing. People think I'm crazy when music affects me so deeply. Maybe... :-)
For Treefingers, I picture myself on an escalator, in a gleaming white empty shopping centre.
"Everything in its Right Place" and "National Anthem" are my favorite tracks. I love the horns and the bari sax on "National Anthem".
It’s bloody lovely to watch someone experience this for the first time - I really remember how instantly emotional it hit
first vid i watched and i already love your energy, i will def have to check your other reactions aswell!
also you should definitely check out godspeed you! black emperor if you haven't already, they have some lengthy songs but they're oh so worth it 😭💞 I'd start with their album "lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven"
Such a genuine and vulnerable reaction, love it!
This is the greatest album of all time. I can't imagine just hearing it for the first time now.
It's funny you comment about him singing "sucking a lemon" and it sounding so good I remember seeing them live in 2016 and being nearly in tears during this song at that moment. Getting chills now just thinking about it. It's remarkable.
"it might not mean anything but I felt what they meant" or whatever you said that nails it on the head.
You gave us everything I always am looking for and forward to in every music reaction. Thank you so much!😊
THE BENDS!!
Yeah!
👍
I agree
and then Amnesiac, AND THEN HAIL TO THE THIEF AND THEN A MOON SHAPED POOL
Plus the B-Sides, like maquiladora, killer cars, etc
Those opening notes…I was 20 years old and forever changed.
You're my favourite reactor to any music. You're great, Kate.
Had the same feeling listening to How To Disappear the first time. Hauntingly sad but beautiful.
Glad you liked Kid A. What balls to drop OK Computer and then left turn and still succeed with mind blowing results.
Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay is a really cool pop album that came out weeks ago, highly recommend for a fun listen!
never
Yeah! She should listen to Sparklehorse, such a fun name!
Yeah that album is super fun!
That Magdalena Bay album is album of the decade so far imo
The definition of an album that flows. Gotta be listened to beginning to end, in one sitting. Marvellous.
Don't sleep on Amnesiac, it goes hand in hand with Kid A as they were recorded all in the same sessions. I personally think there are songs on Amnesiac that I like more than everything on Kid A but its not a popular opinion.
Amnesiac is the better "songs" album. Kid A the better album. Both great.
After watching your Radiohead reaction vids, the silence throughout How to disappear completely & Motion picture soundtrack spoke volumes! 😂❤
Radiohead's best album IMO
Yeah Treefingers is amazing, it's cool to see that acknowledged. And it's made from guitars with effects which is even more impressive. Radiohead went yeah here you go, have an ambient track too and it's one of the best ambient tracks ever. Totally immerses you in the world of this album. That track got me into ambient music and still one of my favorites
motion picture soundtrack is radiohead's best song, no question
Fun fact about Treefingers: it was made almost entirely using an electric guitar + effects :)
i love your reactions 💯.. i had lucky to hear radiohead since pablo honey and see how they evol over the years, kid a was such a mind blowing experience at the time and it keeps feeling the same 24 years later.
I was in a crowd when they played How To Disappear Completely and it was super emotional because they dedicated the song to all the disappeared people during the 70's in Argentina
(we were under a dictatorship lead by General Videla) . Not to mention it was the first time they came to Argentina in 2009 the show was mind blowing, best concert I've ever been in my life.
That 'oohhh...' at the start of Everything was fkn hilarious. The genuine dread and slight concern lol
17:53 Kate, I feel like it's time for you to look into Aphex Twin. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 and just go!
Yep yep
So true, what a fucking album!!
Selected Ambient Works VOL 2 comes out next month in a 30th year anniversary edition with extra tracks.
There's a live EP from this tour called "I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings" that will break your heart in the best way
Girl this is exactly how I listen to Kid A (and Radiohead at large) lol.
Idioteque can't be real
2:21 & 4:52 & 5:55 it’s so beautiful to see those first moments where someone stops resisting the raw , haunting futuristic emotion of the album and just lets it all go flowing all throughout them
their energy is so good when doing the national anthem live and the brass section really adds something to the performance each time. also jonny mixes in bits of whatever radio broadcast he finds at the time when doing it live so it's always a bit different.
We're seeing Thom in concert about a month from now, in Auckland.
Love your reactions to Radiohead, I appreciate how genuine you are and how you don't even try to hold back what you're feeling. (Or you don't seem to at least)
I've been feeling those feelings about them for 20+ years now.
I love all Radiohead fans. I wish everyone in the world was a fan, so I could love everyone.
"I'm literally entering another universe right, now and I'm sober"
I once listened to Kid A on mushrooms. I WAS in another universe. Lol.
You hit the jackpot Kate!
You might wanna check out the artists/bands that inspired their later works, cos they're great in their own right!
When he opens the filter up on the Prophet 6 at the end of Everything In Its Right Place, it always gets me.
i think you should listen to amsp last.
there’s a possibility that it could be their last album and it’s radiohead at its most mature (also imo their saddest album lol 😭)
i recommend listening to hail to the thief and the bends and the king of limbs and amnesiac first and THEN ending it all with amsp
Enjoying your heartfelt reactions and passion for music. A recommendation for listening....R.E.M.'s "Automatic For The People." (Radiohead are big, BIG fans of R.E.M. and they mentored Radiohead, even inviting them to open for them in concert in 1995. The song "How To Disappear Completely" was based on advice R.E.M.'s lead singer Michael Stipe gave to Thom Yorke in regards to how to deal with fame.
for me, the kid a title track has always felt comforting, like a robot learning to be human
It makes everything better in some way
Oh my god A moon shaped pool is going to change your life !
The collaboration between Brian Eno and Harold Budd, for one. Just throwing seeds.
