This song has a special place in my heart and especially this performance. I don't know how many times I've seen this video and just had goosebumps again. It reminds me of the time when I got to know this music. Bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, The doors etc. It was the early 90's and man we had a good time. Good friends, experience good music together, drink and smoke a little and were happy and carefree and became one in this music.
Well back in those days the point was prove yourself as a musician. Because there were crazy talent everywhere... all countries were doing amazing music. Black Americans, Brits, but Los Jaivas and so many geniuses. ❤
there’s only one grainy black and white recording of him singing it during the recording that I know of, yeah. Just cling to the studio cut and enjoy lol

Thx for the reaction!! Written during the VietNam War. And you've not been hit Oh, by flying lead You'd better close your eyes Oh Bow your head Wait for the ricochet
This has always been considered an anti-Vietnam War song. Ian Gillan, the singer, wrote the lyrics. Their "In Rock" album was the second album I bought as a teenager. I saw them live three times in 1971, 72 and 73. They were fantastic live. (I still have all my extensive collection of vinyl from the 60s and 70s.)
It's mostly Americans who think it must be about America's War Against Vietnam because everything has to be about them. But Gillan has said repeatedly it was about the Cold War. He said, for example, that “I started singing and the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat which hovered over us at this time which was probably when the ‘cold war’ was at its hottest ... So, we created this song using the Cold War as the theme.” Being British it's not surprising that they (and me) were far more concerned with any Soviet/ Warsaw Pact threat of invasion/nuclear war than the rogue, terrorist USA killing hundreds of thousands in a country half a world away that was never any threat to the them (or any other country) as they were fighting for their independence from France (and eventually US imperialism).
@@psbarrow Well said by an imperialist Brit, but a big fake. Who got involved in the Iraq war; I thought at the time that the UK would become the 51st state, moving away from the reluctance of other European countries. And even before that, with the Fakland War, Britain had rediscovered its old imperialist streak. Wars are mostly diversionary maneuvers by old machos to distract from national problems and to unite their country through nationalism. As the saying goes, everyone should take a good look at their own nose and reconsider their own behavior✌
The U.K. was obsessed with music particularly rock in the 60’s/70’s/80’s, it was much bigger than any other cultural thing (football for example). Now the U.K. is totally football obsessed, and music is an after-thought. Our footballs team will never be as good at competing on the international stage as our music once was though
I Love Nightwish, Epica, Black Sabbath and other Metal Songs but THIS is/was ALWAYS my Number 1 HIT All-times. Since i heard it in 1972, i wast lost for this song. [never heard a better].
Like so many of my generation, I took for granted just how good the music was back then. Looking back, I treasure those memories of seeing so many great bands in concert. Rush, Outlaws, Bob Segar, Molly Hatchet, Pink Floyd and Tom Petty were some of the best to see live.
It was Great Growing up in the 1960's and seventies in the UK Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep purple, Pink Floyd, Dire straits, Yes, etc . I was lucky enough to see most live, but the best concert by far was Pink Floyds pulse at earls court standing under the mirror ball.
Couldn't wait for you to get to this. Many of the songs in those days had something tangible about them, something you could almost touch and feel, they were created by true musicians who sometimes seemed to be more like magicians. One of the best reactions to this masterpiece I've seen. Thank you
You guys can bet these five monsters already knew exatelly how great they were, at the time... Deep Purple was fundamental influence over hundred of musicians and the music...
It was a time of a true double edged sword - the artists really expanded the creative boundary in really all music genres but also the labels really pushed them hard to publish, tour, publish.

@@DibbdroidA lot of dodgy managers, yes, but the labels pushed the musicians to death..... while making millions of $ along with the managers and paying the bands almost nothing.
@@Rassskle the labels don't book four American tours in a year, plus Europe and the UK on top: the managers do. Labels wanted 1 album a year and the managers could have negotiated for time off. The record labels were a fraction of the driving force

I saw Deep Purple in 1973 during the MACHINEHEAD TOUR, possibly the most impactful concert I have been to. In a light rain at an outdoor dragstrip, it was magical. I was also tripping balls, which may have had something to do with the intensity of the experience.
Great song! This is one of the few hard rock groups I enjoyed in the 60's-70's. Some of my favorites are their covers of Joe South's "Hush" & Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman", "Lazy", "Fireball", "Speed King", "Highway Star", "My Woman From Tokyo", "Space Truckin'" etc.
I was really fortunate to see this same lineup live. I love music but I agree, music was much different then compared to now. There are talented people but this was a special time. Wonderful reaction guys!❤
OH, MY - the passion in this song is AMAZING!!! His mournful vocals are just so MOVING and ENCOMPASSING!!! So hard to find words....just SO impactful!! And, still true, today, when speaking of war. The musicianship in this one is TOP-LEVEL and the vocals, as ALWAYS, with Ian Gillan, are STUNNING...and, in this case: heart-wrenching!!! I'm so glad all this music was available to me, as I grew up: a time when musicians could SO APTLY convey their thoughts and stances to the masses, whom many agreed with. Not the case, with a few exceptions, these days. LOVE YOUR REACTIONS! HUGS....from an old lady!! ❤❤❤❤❤

Hi my favourite couple! 💖❤💖❤Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath is probably the inspiration for most of the hard rock and metal bands of the 70s, 80s and 90s. They are considered one of the founders of Hard Rock. One of my personal favourites from the 70s. When Deep Purple reunited with this setting in 1985 and they came to Sweden, I had my jaw in my lap when Ian Gillan reached those notes still. A memory I will never forget.
Its true what you say , Deep Purple were formed in 1969 same time as Led Zepplin they were all true musicians not fake like today enjoy watching your take on different music and yes its true the best music and Bands were back then i wouldnt cross the road to watch any bands today
My favorite Deep Purple song... your reactions are priceless!!! I've watched so many Child in Time reactions but you guys are my favorite!!! I never get sick listening to this song!!! Speaking of "smoke..." their song "Smoke on the Water" is probably their most famous song (but most people will say it's overly played) Keep 'em coming!!! ❤
The fact of the matter is that in the later 60s and early 70s, the performers WERE IN CHARGE. The executives didn't know what the audience wanted, they signed everybody, and see which ones sold tickets and records.
I live in a small town in Czech Republic with only 7,000 inhabitants. But we still had in my town some concerts - Jethro Tull, Deep Purple and Sting (and Blackmoore's Night - Ritchie Blackmore, ex lead guitarist Deep Purple plus his wife Candice Night, they play renaisance music in modern folk rock arangement). The Deep Purple concert (2013) was my greatest musical experience I saw live.
So many Seppos always take this to be about America's War Against Vietnam when Gillan has said repeatedly it was about the Cold War. He said, for example, that “I started singing and the words came easily because we were all aware of the nuclear threat which hovered over us at this time which was probably when the ‘cold war’ was at its hottest ... This was my teenage years, and it was a time where each band was expanding their experience and direction into all types of music influence shifting scales, keys and time signatures each band unique and each track on an album different a time of wonder and discovery. Deep Purple, Led Zeplin, Black Sabath, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Tangerine Dream, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, The Who, The Stones, Super Tramp, Queen and many more.
Mi sento fortunato perché la mia generazione ha vissuto questi artisti . Pink Floyd , Led Zeppelin , Deep Purple , Black Sabbath , Rolling Stones , Genesis.
I love your guys reactions, and I've been a Deep Purple fan since I was a kid. You guys are right: Child in Time is just an overwhelming masterpiece by five unbelievable musicians each playing amazingly but somehow coming together.

When Deep Purple reunited with this setting in 1985 and they came to Sweden, I had my jaw in my lap when Ian Gillan reached those notes still. A memory I will never forget.
The " looks" on Domenica's face got me ! 😂😂
Its true what you say , Deep Purple were formed in 1969 same time as Led Zepplin they were all true musicians not fake like today enjoy watching your take on different music and yes its true the best music and Bands were back then i wouldnt cross the road to watch any bands today
No sir - 1968 ...same with Zep.
Great insight, your absolutely correct, people were expected to bring something to the table back then 🇬🇧👍
You are absolutely correct! The 60's and 70's music was.made for the love of doing it! Now, who knows why?
I agree with your insights on this music I grew up on. Warms my soul to see you appreciate it.
One of my all time favorite rock bands!
I love to watch people's reactions to this song. It blows everyone away the first time they hear it, and you guys were no exception.
Incredible isn't it, what a band 🤘

You need to see Deep Purple Made in Japan live. Take a look at Free All Right Now live. Both were fantastic musicians.
So, we created this song using the Cold War as the theme.”
Being British it's not surprising that they (and me) were far more concerned with any Soviet/ Warsaw Pact threat of invasion/nuclear war than the rogue US nation killing hundreds of thousands in a country half a world away that was never any threat to the them (or any other country) as they were fighting for their independence from France (and eventually US imperialism).
