That Gary Brooker still had this vocal performance in his pocket after ~40 years is, to me at least, stunning. He clearly looked after his voice. He’s silent now, but people will still be hearing his classics for generations. The orchestra & choir definitely adds power here. RIP.

I beleive this song was based on Geoffrey Chaucers A Millers Tale from his Canterbury Tales. This story tells of a miller who is married to a beautiful lady who decides to leave him for another man, He finds out and can't believe he didn't see it coming, "And although my eyes were open they may just as well have been closed" and when he challenges her about her indiscretion this is when she turns a whiter shade of pale.

This song sounded as wonderful in 2006 as it first sounded in 1967 . The late Gary Brooker's voice has aged like fine wine . As this has become such an iconic song over the past 55 years not many people realise that this was Procol Harum's debut single - how do you top a masterpiece like this ? To give you some context this song was voted - The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977 jointly with BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY !

Gary Brooker, lead singer & founder of the British began in '67, he passed away last yr. For anyone interested, see video "Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale | The story behind the song | Top 2000 a gogo” where Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid supposedly talk about the song -- ruclips.net/video/Pf73XwjZIFQ/видео.html; many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. It's also been written that Reid died before he revealed its meaning. Procol Harum is supposed to have been the name of a friend's cat -- the name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning “far beyond these things”), or that it was a corruption of Procellarum, a vast ocean on the Moon. This is the Danish National Concert Orchestra, which fits beautifully for this piece, & filmed by Ledreborg Castle in Denmark .The song has been the most played song in the U.K. for the last 75 yrs. Keith Reid was the lyricist, Gary Brooker responsible for writing the music; it was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's “Sleepers, Wake!” and “Air on the G String” but contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes references to both pieces. It would have been somewhat nicer had you cut back on the interruptions -- also the talking ea. time went on for quite long periods of time. Thank you.

@@kelleewolfe2834 You're very welcome. There was also a court case over this when Matthew Fisher, a founding member and the organist of the group, won a High Court battle over who wrote the song. He played organ on the 1967 recording & argued that he wrote the distinctive organ melody. He had wanted 50%, but in December of 2006, Justice William Blackburne ruled he was entitled to 40% percent of the copyright rather than the 50% he was seeking, saying that singer Gary Brooker’s input was more substantial. Also, he was not granted royalties for the period before 2005. So much goes on "behind the scenes" in the music & film industry that we're not aware of.

The original (with the beautiful organ solo) came out in 1967. This orchestration takes a masterpiece to a completely new level. The layers; strings, then oboe, then band, then choir and finally the brass near the end, all combine to add to the beauty but never takes away from the vocals. After 100 times, I still get chills and tears. It's that beautiful.

It is refreshing to see young people truely enjoying great music. The first time I saw Procol Harum there were three other acts. The Staple Singers, The Cryan' Shames and Rotary Conection with Minnie Riperton. That was in 1968 and it was one hell of a concert. You never see four bands at a concert any more. And you never see such talent at one place, unless it is at a benefit. Thank you.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" has sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies which is a remarkable feat, especially for a song released as a single. Only about 40 songs in history have ever achieved this great feat.
In 2004 the song also made it onto the top 60 of Rolling Stone’s notable ranking of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1998, it was inducted into the highly-distinguished Grammy Hall of Fame. And in 1977 the Brit Awards gave it the distinction of being The Best British Pop Single 1952-1977, an accolade it shared with “Bohemian Rhapsody” (1975) by Queen.
Also in 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed its criteria, allowing singles to be inducted into the institution as opposed to only musicians themselves. And “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was amongst the first songs to be enshrined therein.
The success of this song has led to “a whiter shade of pale” being adopted as a common phrase in the English lexicon.

Yes, I agree with the drug addiction tone. Remember, this was in 1967, so young people mixed booze and drugs, and many were "experimenting" in many reckless ways, and somewhat suddenly losing a friend or acquaintance to a drug overdose... It did happen. There is also a promo video for the song that includes film clips of the Vietnam War, so it was a time when many painfully young people were being lost to horrible things that turned us all pale when we were made aware of them.

Wow, I cannot imagine the lyrics of Conquistador working for a high school pep rally. Maybe it's just me... Maybe listen to the full song? I remember it as a strong condemnation of colonization, an important issue in light of Vietnam and Agent Orange, etc.

Coming Guys, this is an extremely old song and is worldwide famous. He sings it the same way they sang it in the 60's and 70's amazing his voice hasn't changed. Of course with a full-string orchestra, it's even more beautiful.

This beautiful song is about a tragic love story. The lyrics are about a man and woman on a ship, in some kind of stage act, they were dancing.... "We skipped the light fandango🕺💃....turned cartwheels across the floor...I was feelin' kinda of sea sick🤢, but the crowd called out for more"... We ordered another drink "but the waiter brought a tray"....."One of 16 Vestal Virgins" (Vestal Virgins or Vestals were priestesses of Vesta, ie: a virgin goddess👸or a beautiful young woman). "I wandered through my playing cards, and would not let her be". He was in love 💗and persistent and most likely was intimate with one of the 16 beautiful young women on the ship. The young women were most likely in a group traveling together) to the coast.... "16 Vestal Virgins that were leaving for the coast"....." And although my eyes were open they might just as well been closed".....meaning it was plain to see that they could never be together but he was blinded by unobtainable love, passion, and desire...Later on in life, she finds out that he had died (most likely of a broken heart) and never loved another...."And so it was that later as the miller told his tale, that her face, at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale".....She finds out her lover had died of a broken heart💔. So now you know why the music is so sad, and melodic, and melancholy, and just beautiful!!!!!.

I saw PH many times in the 1960's and 70's as a 4 or 5 piece group and, believe it or not, they managed to be just as 'heavy' as they are in this video. Gary Brooker was a great singer and I wonder if he reminded you of Stevie Winwood. Just a thought. Loved your reaction.

This song was first recorded in the 1960s, when Pocal Harem was one of the best progressive rock bands around.

To touch on your comment about Gary Brooker and Eric Clapton, they were close friends and if you watch any of Claptons concerts going back over the last 20 years you would have seen Brooker playing piano on stage in many of them. And yes maam any music that is played well and with love is good if not great music. Thanks for this reaction.
