      For anyone looking at this one of his most recent videos does show the growth of the trees after about three years! It's titled "Garden/Land Update, And A Look At My Conservation Area". ruclips.net/video/M7OQhhzBd7Y/видео.html is the section of the video showing the most of the trees, but the whole video is great.

    Well done! As an ex-commercial tree planter I just want to warn you about J-roots when you plant. This happens when the root goes deeper than the hole and bends or snags on the side of the hole and bends (forming a J shape). These can occur pretty easily if you're not paying attention and statistically halves the chance of the trees survival into maturity. Great job overall though!

    • @KrisHarbour
      @KrisHarbour  6 лет назад +93

      Thanks for the advice, my friends dad who is a very experiences gardener told me how to plants them. making sure to plant to the correct depth and get the roots straight down in the hole. thanks for the comment, thats the kind of good information i love to see in the comments.

      You need a hoedad. So much easier and faster than using a shovel. I used to plant 3000+ a day. Planted over 1 million in my career. . (That was mostly Pine tree’s though). yours are a bit harder to plant. Quite a ambitious undertaking. Hope the animals don’t eat too many. In the south USA, the trees are harvested after 30 years for paper. So some of the trees I planted have already been cut. I’m feeling very old. ;-)

    I cleared a lot of pine trees out of my forest and the light/space created has seen some oaks come through naturally. At 42 I'll never see them grow much of course, but I like the idea of my grandchildren admiring them in about 70 odd years.

    • @maxejnar9934

      I have planted small oak trees found along the road side. They where like 20-30 cm when i took them up and planted them here and they are like more then 2 meter now in like 4-5 years. So i actually don't think oak grows as slowly as they say if circumstances are optimal they grow fast in the beginning.

    I was part of a three person team in the northwest to replace trees in logged off areas in the early part of the 1970's and between the three of us we planted a million seedling trees. I have been to a couple of these locations to see if our trees had grown and I was quite happy to see how they had grown. I also was informed that the trees we planted had a survival rate of 98% which was the best of all the teams that had planted the trees. If was not so old I would love to be able to get out and help plant more trees in different logged off areas.

    Great video showing your long term plan.
    At first when I heard 10 year rotation I was thinking of the oak trees I planted at my parents house when i was about 10 or 12 and after 10 years they weren’t what I would consider harvestable but then I thought starting at 10 years you would have big enough trees for firewood to use knowing you have more available next year. Trees don’t need to be 24” across to be cut for firewood.
    You have a great plan. Hopefully you are getting enough help with the planting so the 2500 isn’t a solo job.

    • @christiangeiselmann
      @christiangeiselmann 6 лет назад +1

      Youcef De Cáceres Yes, I know. But still not on a base of "everybody runs his own". Rather with a community based approach: one village, one large wind turbine, and of course solar pannels on every roof. Rather one large bio gas plant for a couple of villages together, as well as a large community forest. There is the issue of efficiency. Also it depends where on the planet you live. I am in central Europe, that's densely populated, a village every 3 kilometres. Other people live in countries where they can drive 50 kms without seeing anybody. So it depends.

    @ Kris Harbour
    Kris you should get yourself a Long Handle Trenching Shovel, the shovel head is about 4 inches wide & about 12 inches long with deep sides, you could put it in on an angle & easily dig up a skinny 90 degree hole where you could easily put the tree in the center then pack dirt back in each side, of course it cuts down the amount of material that you are digging out & would speed up everything.

      I wouldn't say strange at all he just more sensible and conscious then most. Not part of the heard maybe but not strange. I'm a few years older then him and only wish I had made similar decisions to Kris in my younger days Hes an inspiring character I hate to sound arse kissy but that's how I feel.

      I agree with you, perhaps "unusual" would have been a better choice of words.

    Btw you should plant a tree for me, i am a very special person, it should be called the punkloader tree,

    Sensational Kris, you've made an amazing personal contribution to your local wildlife and habitat! Not boring at all and well worth an annual update (at least) to show their progress.
    Oh, and congratulations of 50K subscribers too!

    Great work Kris. Others have mentioned, but Deer are a total menace - certainly here in the South West. Hopefully enough of your trees will get to maturity by sheer weight of numbers. The only other way is serious deer fencing which is intrusive and expensive...

    amazing... your a busy tree planter.
    just a note... a good 20-25-30 distance between trees... they grow anf the natural canopy/circumference of growth is 15-20+ feet. better more space between then so tight you can't get in with equipment... you spoke about apple trees; they get pretty tall & wide/broad.... and what about irrigation???
    but overrall, good for you. hope you'll have alot of help
    live aloha!!!
