This is a wonderful landscape lesson, David. I've said it before, and it bears repeating -- that your generosity in teaching us is 'V-much' appreciated. Thank you! All the best to you and yours. JV
OMG!!! Your'e my kind of painter:: fingers, paper towels, brush, knifes. You are soft spoken, and have a picture of how to mix paints as well. Glad I found your videos. Thank You. Denice from the MidWest..
That was one of the first videos I’ve watched all the way through. You teach while painting, and this picture is beautiful. So happy I’ve found your site. Can’t wait to see the next one.
I like the casualness of knife painting as it really leans into subjective impressionistic values. A southwest style knife painting would be nice especially that canyon walls seem look as though mother nature took a knife to them.
Wonderful video! I've been landscape painting for about 18 months. Each time I paint a sky, I hear David's voice telling me to add atmosphere and interest. I add mountains to all my paintings. I live close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, so mountains hold a special place in my heart.
Really love your art, I’ve just started my art work journey at the age of 79 years, I’ve not been painting that long, but would really love to try the pallet knife, thank you for you time and effort to really give such wonderful information on how to used the pallet knife. Definitely going to give it a try. Thank you so much.
You described every movement, stroke and 'colour note' very definitively! I had never heard the term 'colour note', I love that! Thanks so much for this, it is on the top of my 'paint with the knife' list.
Very nice painting,David. I like the thickness & movement of your clouds, the atmosphere, fractured trees & trunks & the way your river goes up into the shoreline & around the corner. Haven't completed a painting with a painting knife yet but will try one day. Have a good evening & take good care.
Very exciting watching you create. It seems that the secret to painting is developing sensitivity. Sensitivity to color variations, texture and lights and darks. I have noticed that you use a lot of lavender even in the landscapes. I have started looking at shadows and colors in real life and see more lavenders and color variations. Thank you for your help.
I'm retired and looking into trying to learn to paint. Watching you for the first time and you definetly peaked my interest! I need to get a list for suggested supplies for beginners or recommendations for books that would be helpful for beginners. I so enjoyed your video and will be watching more! Thank you so much!
Thank you for a wonderful hour of learning and watching how to use a painting knife/pallete knife to paint your beautiful landscape. Love your color palette. Happy New Year 2024. Be safe and well. Jeanne
David Sir, I’m painting for fun painted my first painting knife picture in 1958. You great lesson today wants me to get going again. I love the lesson and your painting.
Thanks for taking the time to share this with us! It gave a nice mix of inspiration and techniques. Very helpful for me to continue to move forward and make progress.
I must agree with comments here. This is a beautiful painting. I work a lot with palette & paint knives. They are just so right. But, I like brushes, too! I really like the way you built this piece. Wonderful! You're an amazing teacher as well as artist. Thank you for sharing. I have loved all your work. Your pastel portraits are so amazing!! My first painting was a portrait... Ernest Hemingway, The Old Man and the Sea.
Thank you for your generosity and time to show painting techniques, i am finding your tutorials so informative. Very much appreciated. You are so talented!!!
Watching this video for the second time, so far! Love the results with the knife. I agree with the comment that this method would work well for Southwest painting. I always appreciate all your different ideas and methods of teaching! You are the best ❤️Happiness and good health to you and your family ❤️
David, this is one of my favorite ocean seascapes that you have done! You have done many amazing ones. I think maybe is me as I love the clouds and hill with the trees…the painting knife with your talent gives beautiful results. Thank you as always for sharing your many ideas and talents! ❤ Love your tutorials! God bless!
Awesome painting and love how you share so much information and techniques on exactly how you are painting. I have learned so much from you on painting mountains and reflections in water. Since I have a special love for painting landscapes, I have ordered the landscape set of the Heritage paints, mediums and fusion brushes and can’t wait for them to arrive! Then I will be practicing and practicing. I enjoy painting with a brush with some pallet knife added. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing talent!!! Bless you and your family!
David, you are a very quiet and gentle teacher so why do I often pick up so many "loud and straight" tips and useful information that I happily use after watching. Your instruction is not limited to oil or acrylic paintings. Many are a help with both pastel and watercolor as well. Many thanks..
This is very nice- you have an amazing talent and I am so appreciative of you sharing these techniques- for so long I was stuck on what to do- now I am working on one to do next- you make all of these so interesting and I hope you never get tired of sharing- God bless you and your family- Thank you so much!!
David, thank you so much! I watched this before bed tonight and was so enthralled with it that I'm going to try to watch it again tomorrow and see if I can play a bit this week. I'd love to just paint all day, but tomorrow was already scheduled full. Thank you so much for your explanations.
Your lessons are so important for me right now.. I have been painting impressionistic scrapes for years with mainly the painting knife.. transitioning and blending now to add more technique. Thanks again.. William.
Loved this, learnt a lot, Watching u thicken the paint reminded me to do that more often. Can't wait to get into my next paint using a knife. Thank you.🌻

Oh my goodness. David, this is the first time seeing your work/videos and your style is exactly what I've been looking for over the past couple of years!! I absolutely love your personality, style, teaching methods, results, etc.!! I've subscribed, and signed up for your newsletter and announcements and look forward to watching many more! I've used a painting knife (identical to the one you used in this video) for a couple of years (inconsistently) but can't wait to apply your impressionist techniques to my landscapes, etc. You are a great inspiration to me! Thank you so much!!
David, you helped me see the need to relax, try it, fix it if that try failed but, stay loose enough to try what comes to mind. I am jazzed to try the pallet painting. That hour went by far too fast. Thank You
looking for painting knife videos for a few days now, your technique (and painting skills) are the best so far. super demo, thanks!
I agree with others to say this is an enlightening knife-painting lesson. Thank you Mr. David!!
