Yup....as a young boy learning guitar this song was one I always put on and played along with. And now that Sandy has passed it's once again come into my mind. RIP Samuel Pearlman!
I feel the same way. The mystical science fictiony lyrics, Eric's urgent vocals, the non-stop urgency of the song. And of course BUCK COULD SHRED! Buck could always shred.
I was fortunate to have seen the Bouchard Bros. play at a barn dance on their parent's farm in upstate NY. This was before they graduated high school and before BOC. I was a young teenager and my family vacationed just down the road from their place. A far cry from BOC and this concert, but I can say I knew them when....
I was at this show. Richie Blackmore canceled and BOC played like a three hour show and pulled out all the stops! We totally got our money's worth. Always a great live band.
I have had the opinion for almost 39 years that the live version of Astronomy on Some Enchanted Evening was the greatest recorded piece of rock music ... this version here comes mighty close to it. That's BOC for you ... Incredible ...
yes in 1978 the best live set they did, it was never the same after that gig, the mine-set of buck was on the road to perfection on his gibson-LP. his LPs sounded way better then the guitars he now uses.
Those Solos make me laugh and cry because they are so good. Buck is a master. Not one sour note and everything is going somewhere. A guitarists guitarist. 👍
Yes , a very close second , I have loved this song forever . I have rock "T" shirts from 1979 , and 1982 I can still wear , it is now 2020 , and I live this , as if it was yesterday .
It says a lot that two of the finest live rock guitar solos ever recorded were not only the same band, but the same song. Amazing. Buck Dharma continues to astonish after all these years.
Anybody out there who (foolishly) thinks that Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser can't wail with the best of 'em on electric guitar needs a listen to this. Great stuff, thanks for the upload.
Hey John, I see you posted this a year ago:).......... I just saw BOC 2 weeks ago and this was the conversation ironically. Now, let me say first that my friends and I are all musicians, some guitarists, NONE I say NONE that can compete with Donald Roeser. Sure we can wail...... but some is a bit of trick or illusion so to speak. There are techniques such as, trills, vibratos, pull offs ect.... that require practice and skill, then you throw in some delay and distortion and you look like a star to some people..... But, Donald is incredibly melodic and clean picking. To do so at that blinding speed is an immense talent. He's also incredibly imaginative, has beautiful phrasing etc. He is simply a phenom and a great human being to boot. Cheers.
I see both of you posted a little while ago but the talent of Buck is top notch. I have played for sometime and his melody is up there with the best (Rhodes, Van Halen, Young etc etc . . .) This is the part I like best someone told Tom Petty your stuff is easy to play. He replied with then you write it. With Buck your stuff is hard to play. He says yes but you try and write it. All sound starts as silence then you give it form. Buck has a sixth sense about melody. This song is great but could use more cow bell. Keep Rocking BOC ! ! !
I am happy to see that the large flock of show cassettes I released into the wild years ago have found new life and spread the Legend of the Cult far and wide. This was a wonderful set to mix......George Geranios
Thanks for the memories. You sure knew when and how to enhance each instrument at the right moment. My first show was 12-31-1974 at The Academy of Music. My first concert ever!...Pelican gave me backstage passes at Cormack arena 1976. He got a Levi jacket with a replica of The Agents cover on the back...ahhh the memories. Used those passes for a few other shows..Are you still front man for anybody anymore?
No sir, thanks for the props. I am retired now and don't really do any live mixing. I love all the killer tools available now to sound people and I play with them in my modest home studio. I consider mysef very fortunate to have worked with the Oysters during that great era of music.
I lived in the Los Angeles for many years. The great host with most Bolle became a good friend. Still till this day. He told me how you passed on some of your soundboards to him..so cool. I would go to his "Museum of The Cult" a couple times a month after work and listen to one of the shows id had seen. You had your pulse directly connected to them musically. Are you the first or one of the first to create "True" stereo sound at a live show? Sounded like it. Thanks for the memories guy. Best of Heath To You!
I'm gonna be 58 in a few days & you just made me laugh for the 1st time in 37 years. It hurt. But thanks anyway. Awesome comment. A year late but you still won the internet that day. Belated congrats.
My father's like that too. I too had sunglasses on most of the time, at least until a girl to a party thought I was blind since I was wearing sunglasses indoor...
Saw them in Dallas, Texas at the Cotton bowl June 9 1979 (Texxas world music festival ;79) along with Heart , Boston, Van Halen, Nazareth, Sammy Hagar, and TKO ( the 70's were a great time to be a teenager!!!! )
I was THERE AS WELL👽🖖💫🌌🎼🎶!!!!! It was F'ng 🔥 in that Cotton Bowl! I was 10yrs young and Aunt D.got me an early Christmas gift(saw lots of TITTIES😅)! Blue Oyster Cult👊
saw BOC many times in the 70's and 80's. one of my favorite bands of all time. saw them at the spectrum in philly many times. saw them a few times in phoenix at the colesium. saw them in tenn a few times. once in a litlle bar in murfreesboro tn. saw them in baltimore civic center, steel town. they were and still one of my favorite live bands.of all time. the only band i have seen more than them is frank zappa. have all of BOC'S albums, cassettes, and cd's. have some on all three. put many miles on my vehicles back in the day riding around listening to them smoking some refer. not hurting anybody, just enjoying life with my best friends and some good rock-n-roll. we had it made in the 60's and 70's.

Wow...!!! Amazing how much "different" Buck's solo is on this set versus the one on Some Enchanted Evening, yet both are as if they were meant to be. True genius and talent, yet so underrated...!!!
Vic, check out the latest version of Astronomy from Glasgow 2017 on here. Yet another Buck variation on the riffing up to the ending & still incredible. He actually makes a mess up early on in the song which brings a great reaction from Buck & the crowd. It's still stunning & remarkable given it's 38 years on from this one !!!
Two of the greatest live rock and roll guitar solos ever recorded, and not only is it the same guitarist, it's the same song. Amazing. Blue Oyster Cult-On Tour Forever (as my concert T says).
This is such a classic! Saw them in August 79 with Pat Travers, epic show in Portland Oregon. They toured non stop in the 70's, also saw them in 77 for the Spectres tour, best laser show ever hands down.

I was only about 2 years then... But I have been a fan since I was a teen and rocked these guys in my first car. I have only seen them once in a small free concert by a local radio station in the late 80's. Good stuff, and still never tire of their music. BOC forever!
So fortunate to have seen this band maybe a dozen times over the years. The first time at Magic Mountain in California on the very same stage where Spinal Tap opened for the puppet show. They blew me away then when they all grabbed guitars for "Godzilla" and I've been a fan ever since. This is a great version of a classic. Buck Dharma just goes bananas on this version. How can one little man hold so many riffs?
I saw that show at Magic Mountain. Afterward, I came across the band in the tavern/bar thing they had at Magic Mountain. Eric signed an autograph on one of the pages in.my checkbook. So cool.
My first concert was October 6th, 1979 , Blue Oyster Cult Richfield Coliseum , Mansfield/Cleveland, OH. An early birthday present from my sister. I turned 14 Oct 13th. Btw, I turned 13 on Friday 13th, so this concert would have been a Saturday show.
I saw BOC at the Dane County Coliseum with Be Bop Deluxe in Oct'76. It's kind of strange that the few audio/video clips that I've loaded from that era seem way too slow from what I remember of that concert...I mean...they were like lightning that night...one song after another. They did a medley of Paul Revere's "Kicks" and "Flaming Telepaths" that still brings a smile to my face. I was pretty young and it was one of my first concerts, but I often compared other band's live performances to BOC's. Be Bep Deluxe was also an awesome band. Bill Nelson is still considered a great English guitarist.
The Super 8 film of this song can now be seen on Buck's own channel & it's stunning ... I think The Vigil from the same concert is also on his channel now as well ........
A few months later, I would see them at the Santa Cruz Civic. The last day of the 1970's. I saw a girl there that took my breath away, but I was a little pipsqueak. It took me thirty years, but now she's madly in love with me. Life.
My favorite BOC song. Anyone else feel the same way? I can't explain it...it is just out of this world great. Astronomy!
Dewey Cedarblade BOC has so many great songs!! We are in agreement with this one. Everyone has an opinion...we love this song...
I Agree with you George. Its Wonderfull
Totally infatuated with this song the first time I heard it . . . and the spell has never been broken
Some people have all the luck
That is so awesome
I was at this show. Richie Blackmore canceled and BOC played like a three hour show and pulled out all the stops! We totally got our money's worth. Always a great live band.
You should still kick Richie Blackmore’s ass anyways!
To this day I Never miss a
Blue Oyster Cult show
No one sounds like these guys IMO Incredible 🤠
This song transcends merely just music. This just lifts me to some other realm when I listen to it.
Thin Lizzy and Blue Oyster Cult 1979 at Veterns Memorial Columbus Ohio . I was 18 and what a great show by both bands.
Two of my favorite band.
That sounds like the best concert EVER
Sweet double bill.
I have had the opinion for almost 39 years that the live version of Astronomy on Some Enchanted Evening was the greatest recorded piece of rock music ... this version here comes mighty close to it. That's BOC for you ... Incredible ...
Steven Wilkinson i would put Bucks solo on SEE against anything! Best version of the song

Search "ETI live 1977 Super 8" & see just how good BOC were live in their heyday .... incredible.
Not showmen, just a complete band of visionaries. I never thought I would hear a version as good as Some Enchanted Evening but here we are 😎
The Bouchard masterpiece, a timeless classic rock tune
Buck is one of rocks all time greatest guitarist.and I have seen them all. Except Hendrix, .my all time favorite.
Wow! One of the best live bands on the planet at their peak.
One of the best versions I've ever heard. The keyboards finally get the exposure they deserve.
Allen Lanier was badly underrated at his keyboarding skills. RIP

this track is BOC 's heritage to mankind..!
Really good version does the song the justice it really merits. When my Mum died I couldn't stop listening to this.
One of the greatest tracks ever written, this is an exceptional live recording. Thanks for uploading it!
RIP Allen Lanier.....BOCs secret weapon !!!
Multi talented, excellent guitar and keyboard player.! Love his shared live solo with Buck D. on "Last Days of May"!
Finally someone mentioned Allen. He’s great playing guitar and keys. In this.
They said Allen was a perfection and was never satisfied always thought they could do better. All of them were amazing
Just wonderful music ...depth feeling and the guitar 🎸🎸 unreal
a little love for the late great alan lanier, here. what a talented man.
Secret Treaties...top 10 album ...in my opinion!
def my favorite Astronomy of all time...love Buck's recurring whammy bar note push (or whatever you call it) theme throughout the whole song.
Dark, weird, exquisite and brilliant. And one of best songs ever.
More than enough music genius to surround the galaxy. Salute to the Bouchards and Allen.
This is such an AMAZING recording!
All the clips from that time are poorly recorded, but this is straight from the mixer and this is Buck at his very best.
WOW!
Yup right off the board.Aren't we lucky?
Wonderful version and performance. My favorite BÖC song together with “In the presence of another world”
Completely enjoyable! I lived in the Twin Cities area when this aired. I was 9 years old. I wish I had been there. Long live B.O.C.!
I think I would have bawled my head off if I was at that show.

The jam never ends with BOC, saw them on this tour in Denver. This may be the best live version of Astronomy yet! especially at 5:15

Actually, the founders were Albert and Donald. Joe didn't join until later. But they definitely made the band much better. Don't forget Allen.
Right on! Well said, sir.
Yes, a lot,of talent equally divided among Eric, Albert, Allen, Buck, and Joe.
Allen Lanier. Understated but vital. 😎
Albert and Joe wrote this song BTW

Hendrix often did that too...
"EXCEPTIONAL..."

Buck's solo is pure serotonin shot into my brain
I’ve been a fan for decades
Been a fan since seeing Soft White Underbelly at age 11 in 1968...
Oh man, that must have been so cool! I love their pre-BÖC stuff too. Buddha’s Knee live must have been awesome.

The version from Some Enchanted Evening is my favourite...then buck playing Veteran on Extraterrestrial Live is something else!
What about... "Buck'sBoogie" tho... yepyep.
This is f'ing incredible.
It's Buck Dharma .. we have grown to expect the Incredible .
You're right though the whole band is bang on it here ....
it is amazing that it has been 45 years since this. And since an amazing guitar solo
Absolutely amazing!
Holy mother of
The best version I've heard! Buck's on fire.
I have seen boc 15 times and this performance fucking rocks!
I was at this show!!! Met Center, Minneapolis, MN
I’ve seen BOC 103 times, still pissed I haven’t seen them more. I’ve seen almost every great band except Zep, and i still haven’t seen BOC enough.
I don't understand why these guys aren't selling out huge arenas to this day!!! Still awesome!!!!
Eric Bloom lost his voice. Without that they can't sell out crowds anymore...
@@DowJonesDave respectfully, Bullshit
Actually they do sell out smaller venues

This is the song that inspired me to be one of the greatest keyboards ever this is the legendary over and out
Great version! One of their best songs.
alas, I was in middle earth when BOC was big... never got to see them live...
Their lyrical quality is apparent in this recording, wonderful balance between factors.
very overlooked, great version! janky do thanky
it really is the nexus of the crisis.

beefoneeto Thanks...that's very possible...It was almost 40 years ago..haha
Wow! Would have loved to see the Bop and Blue tour!
Live in the Air Age is a wonderful live album from a fine band ...
doug benjamin a night of bill Nelson and buck Darma is guitar heaven.
Magnifique
Absolutely one of BOC 's best.
Great sound quality nice upload
This is amazing!
couldn't imagine a version to get close to the Some Enchanted Evening one but this one is off the scale
Flawless every time
"Like to whip out an old one for ya" Lol. The song was only 5 years old then. They are still playing it 45 years later !
Absolument fabuleux, génial, un must ce boc, admirable
Buck Dharma is the man.
THIS AWESOME!
muchas gracias por subirlo, suenan demasiado bien
Incredible rendition :D
should have been original inductees to R&R HoF
I'd like to find this show if all the sound is this good.. Great recording and Astronomy is one of my three fav BOC tunes.
The Super 8 film of this song can now be seen on Buck's own channel & it's stunning ... I think The Vigil from the same concert is also on his channel now as well ........
Literally giving me goosebumps again 50 fucking years later!
A few months later, I would see them at the Santa Cruz Civic. The last day of the 1970's. I saw a girl there that took my breath away, but I was a little pipsqueak. It took me thirty years, but now she's madly in love with me. Life.
A real shame there isn't a video of this !!
There is. See Buck's channel. Just search "Astronomy live 1979 8mm" on here. It's amazing & mindblowing.
@@stevenwilkinson1265 Thanks. I’ll check it out. BOC rules !!
Apparently it's gone, does anyone know where I can find it?
1st heard it 2 yrs before i was married 25 years ago and divorced 7 years. it is still good music. PS i was 21
Thanks for the upload!!! Great, completely different alternate version. The crackling is a bit distracting though.
I thought I had already heard their best live performances here on RUclips. I gotta rethink that.
Tyranny and Mutation and the unnamed album with 'Cities on Flame' are and always will be my favorite albums.
