Actually you DO want corner slats to look like the way you rejected. It makes for a more custom aesthetic especially after caulking and painting. Professional trim carpenters with an artful eye and experienced decorators know this "dimensional" trick.
Thank you! And I hear you, I think that would have been nice as well! My friends wanted more of a two tone look though so they chose this color for the island 👍
It's all nice and dandy until in 6months you look down and see those little spaces between bars, and realize you have to clean there.... you'll only be able to use a toothbrush and q-tips.😮😢

I think since they don't have kids or anything haha they keep their house pretty clean and also the island overhang helps keep dust away. Either way I understand where you're coming from and appreciate your kind approach! 🙏
Would recommend you run to the home Depot and grab some gray outlets. They won't match your gray paint exactly but will be closer and much better than the white you have.
Yesss I’ve used them before! For this one the slats are so thick that I felt like it’d look weird to extend it that far 😆 up to personal taste maybe though!
Not sure if it’s the lighting or what but in the first part of the video, the cabinets look like a Smokey Grey color and the part where you didn’t do the upgrade on the island, it looks like it’s expresso color and then the cabinets look like they’re a dark blue color from about 1/2 way into the video. I wish my kitchen island was that big, I would have to add about 6” . I would’ve also fixed the drywall, especially how bad it is, regardless that you don’t see it, it still should’ve been done and it wouldn’t have taken that much nor long to fix. I think both ends of the island needs something .
Hmmm I think it reads bluer and less gray in person. Their kitchen cabinets are navy blue so this ties in nicely, and they do have a lot of pops of color in their home so I feel like it works. To each their own tho!
To make it more modern i would have not used the bottom or top trim at all and just made the slats go all the way from the counter to the floor. Or maybe just a 1 inch trim at the bottom to match the 1 inch slats. If the drywall was finished correctly it would have looked fine with just the slats. But to each their own. I like a more modern simple look. The less trim the better imo.
I’m actually totally with you on this! I wasn’t planning on adding the trim back (or at least using something slimmer) but once I saw the effed up drywall I knew that would be a longer fix 😅 I had limited time on this project so I just used the old trim again 👍
What a shame the quality work in most homes is just not there anymore, and you dont know it until you take on a mini project like this. I would be wondering what else was half done.
Unfortunately their cabinet doors are shaker with ogee rails and styles. So this chunky slat look clashes with the cabinets, as in badly. They would have had a better look with a wainscot panel look to match the cabinet doors. Your slats might have worked if they had full overlay cabinet doors that have no ogee. If you have a router with an ogee bit you could have replicated the cabinet doors with thin rectangular door stop moulding, or find door stop moulding with an ogee.
Hmmm I do hear you. However I think home projects aren’t all or nothing. These modern slats are way more my friends vibe, so it doesn’t hurt to tackle that part of the kitchen while maybe tabling an expensive projects like refacing all the cabinets till later!
Looks good BUT imagine having to dust between each of those slats and the dust that would accumulate behind them🤦🏻♀️ Not just dust... greasy kitchen dust!
Actually because of the island overhang it doesn’t catch much dust at all! Plus I’d always rather design based on what I like than what’s easy to dust 😆
Fabulous job. Don't know why people have to be such downers. I use Swiffer sheets to clean areas like that. It's not a big deal. It's a beautiful kitchen and you made it more beautiful.
@@Theuniverseisstrange sure but thinner nails means less durability. For the minimally smaller amount of putty and touchups (it would still be the same number of nail holes), I wouldn't find it worth it personally.
Oh no, I hope you used adhesive on the back of those boards. 18 ga nails are not meant to be structural into drywall. You need a solid plywood backer if relying on only nails. Nails are meant to be used as a temporary hold until the adhesive has a chance to cure.
@@Theuniverseisstrange small 1 inch MDF slats aren't structural though. For something heavier/bigger/something that would actually be carrying weight I'd agree with you but for purely aesthetic purposes this should be fine.
It would have taken a full extra day to fix since I live 45 min from their house and would need to go back and get more of my tools, borrow my friends van to get drywall, buy more supplies, replace, tape, mud, etc - all to fix a shoddy drywall job that literally no one will see and my friends did not care about 😅
