    But what about an island height? Is it should be like other countertop's height or could be higher?

  • @OPHIUCHUS666
    @OPHIUCHUS666 2 года назад

    You can go for an overhang of 400mm easy in any worktop materials. did it for years and never had any problem. I always aim for 300mm minimum. 250mm is not enough imo. depending on the height of the persons, 250mm might be too shallow and very uncomfortable.

    It's been said that a kitchen island should be one tenth or one fifteenth of the whole kitchen area to look propprtioned.
    My kitchen is 17'x9'5" (161.5 sqft) so, in order to look proportioned, my island should be 16 sqft to 25 sqft. We are a family of 4 and considering 24" per seat, that gives me an 8' wide and I currently have it at 4' depth. (32 sq ft area)
    I still have my clearance around the island at 36". Would this size look proportioned? (8'x4') or should I consider make it a 6'x4' island instead and only keep 3 seats? Please help! Contractor needs an answer and I am having a hard time making the final decision. Thank you!

    Thank you for all this advice and the dimensions needed! Trying to decide if I can swap my current set up, which has a peninsula, for an island instead...so this is really helpful.

    Thanks for the insightful tips Michael.
    I have a quick one for you. How do you plan the kitchen island if the 1 metre depth walkway is tricky to achieve because the wall next to the island is diagonal. Hence there are parts where the island can easily have more than the 1 metre of space but on the other end the space is much less, say 70 cms?

    • @kitchinsider
      @kitchinsider  2 года назад +1

      I'll always aim for around 1m. So if you can shift the island along, or make it slightly smaller i'd look if that's possible. However, if this 70cm section is just at one end and not a long walkway area, or 'in' the kitchen as such then I'm less worried. 70cm is basically a doorway. So if you can step through the 70cm section near your island into a bigger space (hopefully you get what I mean) than I think that's okay. It's mainly for the working area where you have cabinets on both sides. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching/commenting. Good question!

    Great video. Very informative. My kitchen size is 11 ft x 12 ft 6"". My kitchen counters will be standard size on all four walls . Is an island for breakfast with onky 2 seating achievable?? Thank you much in advance.

      Only 2 seating//

    • @shkhamd
      @shkhamd Год назад

      well, given the math, countertops are 2ft deep, and you have them on four walls, thay will take out 4 ft space.
      Clearance between island and counter top is 36 inch std, 30 inch minimum (even might violate code). So you lose minimum of 5 ft for clearance on all four side.
      That leaves you with a space about 2 by 3.5 ft for island.

      Why? People want accuracy, that's why we use metric. Even yanks use metric when selecting a calibre of firearm to go on a shooting spree. "Hmmm I think I'll use a 9mm"
